Ten Years After tour kicks off this month

When one thinks of the original Woodstock Festival, classic performances of such bands as the Who, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Cocker, and Santana immediately come to mind. But one group that handed in one of the festival’s show-stopping (and certainly, one of the most rocking) performances was Ten Years After, who subsequently built a sizeable fanbase of people starved for classic blues rock. Now, 40 years after the group’s original formation, Ten Years After - Joe Gooch (vocals, lead guitar), Chick Churchill (keyboards), Leo Lyons (bass guitar), and Ric Lee (drums, no relation to Alvin) - is rocking the tour trail once more.
During the group’s first go-round (from 1967 to 1974), the focal point of Ten Years After was guitar hero/singer Alvin Lee. It was the Lee-fronted line-up that rocked Woodstock, and also scored several hits (tops on the list being “I’d Love to Change the World” and “I’m Going Home”) as well as the hit albums ‘Sssh’ (1969), ‘Cricklewood Creek’ (1970), and ‘A Space in Time’ (1971), before splitting up. The group reunited briefly in the late ‘80s, before going their separate ways once more. Come the early 21st century, Ric Lee had unearthed a gem from the vaults, ‘Live at the Fillmore East’ (from 1970), which got the band members considering another go ‘round. With Alvin Lee the only member not willing to move forward, Gooch stepped in, and the group has been a lean, mean, rockin’ machine ever since.
“It's better - has more of a band feel than before” explains Ric Lee about the Gooch-fronted Ten Years After. “The energy level is frightening from three old bastards and a young dude who is able to play the signature licks, and yet impart his own original stamp on everything.”
Lyons adds that the move to replace Alvin was out of necessity to keep the band alive, but has worked out for the best. “Alvin Lee did not have the enthusiasm to tour. Joe joining Ten Years After has been a very positive thing and has given the band a renewed energy. I think the band is now playing like it did when the fire was first lit way back in 1967. We have more fun on stage than we've ever had and it shows in our music.”
And although it’s been 40 years since Ten Years After first took shape, the upcoming Anniversary Tour will show the quartet is still firing on all cylinders.
“We're determined to give them as good a time as we have playing for them,” says Lyons. “It's a real pleasure to be back on tour. We'll play a selection of the most requested songs from our earlier records plus new material from ‘Now’ (2004) and ‘Roadworks’ (2005). We'll also be slipping in some as-yet-unrecorded material. After the show we'll come out to meet our fans and sign any albums or CD's they bring along.”
And if the upcoming tour wasn’t enough to satisfy longtime fans, Lee unveiled that the group is also currently hard at work on an all-new studio set.
“Writing is going on as we speak, and a new album should surface in early 2008. The music will no doubt still have a blues base but will move forward from where ‘Now’ and ‘Roadworks’ left off.”After the 40th Anniversary Tour winds down, Ten Years After plans on finishing off the forthcoming album, before…hitting the road again, says Lyons. “The 40th Anniversary tour runs until May 2008 and travels all over the world. It's a heavy commitment. We plan to release at least one DVD and one studio CD. After that I guess we'll start the 41st Anniversary tour. We all enjoy playing.”
In addition to U.S. dates, Ten Years After also plans on performing this year in such exotic locales as the Far East, South America, Australia, and New Zealand. According to Lee, expect to be rocked. “A powerful, ass-kicking Ten Years After - playing old and new like the fans have not seen or heard before.”

Gallows' debut out July 10

I'm excited about this new effort by Gallows and will be interviewing them soon to preview their upcoming appearances at the Glass House (June 28) and Warped Tour (June 29) in Pomona. If you like hardcore, this is a "must-hear"! ~M

GALLOWS TO UNLEASH AN ORCHESTRA OF WOLVES ON JULY 10TH

"This furious hardcore debut will punch you in the ears." - «««« (Kerrang!)

"Like filing down your own teeth, this is mean, self-aware, viciously lethal musicthat ought to be mandatory listening." - «««« (Playmusic Magazine)

England's vicious hardcore act Gallows will release their debut album, Orchestra of Wolves, in North America on July 10th through Epitaph Records. Originally released in the UK in 2006, the record will feature three brutal new tracks including a cover of Black Flag's classic "Nervous Breakdown."
Critically acclaimed by British press, Gallows have been described as "the best British punk band since The Clash" (Kerrang!) as well as having "one of the finest displays of sneering, snotty attitude since The Sex Pistols." (Total Guitar).
While the media's statements are audacious, they aren't without proof. The group makes an undeniably ferocious debut with ire-filled vocals entrenched in a labyrinth of frantically hostile riffs and anarchistic staccato. From vocalist Frank Carter's cathartically shocking tales of date rape, violence and wrecked families, to the sonic fury of guitarists Laurent Barnard and Steph Carter's blistering dexterity, to the bowel shaking beats from drummer Lee Barratt and Stu Gili Ross' quick tempered bass, Orchestra of Wolves proves without a shadow of doubt that the critics were right - punk is back!
Orchestra of Wolves rips hard and fast. The musical mêlée begins with "Kill the Rhythm," a chaotic nod to the group's notorious live shows. The album briskly progresses to the punk anthem "Abandon Ship," a metaphoric song of loss in which Carter exclaims "This is the captain of your ship / I'm sorry we depart this way / You left me broken hearted / But I never loved you anyway!" Gallows' relentless blasts of irritability continue with "In the Belly of a Shark," and segue to the emotionally raging cries of "Six Years."
Stark as the topics sometimes are, Gallows never back down. On the group's title track, Carter caustically lashes out at date rape exclaiming "the hardest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return."
A non-stop excursion of pain and carnage injected with hyper riffs and throbbing rhythm, Orchestra of Wolves erupts with genius as one of the best punk albums of the past two decades.

Track Listing:
1. Kill The Rhythm
2. Come Friendly Bombs
3. Abandon Ship
4. In The Belly Of A Shark
5. Six Years
6. Rolling With The Punches
7. Last Fight For The Living Dead

Til We Die adds tour dates

Although Till We Die’s full length debut, ‘Pressing On,’ will not be officially released until June 26th (via the Locomotive Records/Screaming Ferret label), the group - singer Matt Ingham and guitarist Joe Demarco, the duo soon enlisted the rhythm section of bassist Mike Laroche and drummer Dave Stewart – will be previewing tracks on countless just-announced dates.
From the middle of May through June, Till We Die will be touring with A New Revolution, and on Monday, May 14th, the group will be performing at Rock 101 WGIR Presents ‘3 Days Grace and Puddle of Mudd Official Pre-party’ at Mark's Showplace in Bedford, NH. The show is 18+ and is open to the public, while the bands will be signing autographs and hanging out with their fans from 7-9pm.
Just a few days later, Till We Die will also perform on Sunday, May 27th, as part of Rock 101 WGIR’s 16th Annual Radio Show 'The Sky Show'. The WGIR concert is an all-ages and free show, and usually attracts between 20-30,000 attendees – as past rockers to perform have included Shinedown, Lacuna Coil, and Godsmack, among others.
Once ‘Pressing On’ is issued, Till We Die’s tour schedule will get only more jam-packed. First up will be a CD release party on June 23rd at the Avalon Ballroom. Presented by WAAF 107.3, the band will perform, and again, will be an all-ages show (additionally, a free CD will be distributed to ticket holders).
From mid-July through August, Till We Die will be touring with former Roadrunner Records artist Faktion (www.myspace.com/faktiondallas ), before appearing Sunday, September 8th on the main stage of WAAF’s Locobazooka at the Tweeter Center in Mansfield, Mass. And from September through October, dates with Powerman 5000 have been firmed up.
Ever the road warriors, Till We Die vocalist Matt Ingham will be performing these shows wearing a cast, due to a broken leg.
“I haven’t seen a young band draw crowds like they do at their shows since the early days of Godsmack back at the Brewhouse in Haverhill, MA, ten years ago before they were signed,” says head of Screaming Ferret Wreckords, Tim Koukos. “These guys command the same kind of energy and presence as Godsmack did back then.”

Benefit auction for Little Kids Rock

Six-String Masterpieces is a charitable art exhibit that pays tribute to heavy-metal’s most influential guitarist Darrell Abbott, and supports music education in public schools. The exhibit features over 60 electric guitars; hand-painted, illustrated and sculpted by leading artists, musicians and tattooists.

The list of participants reads like a who’s who in the rock and art worlds: Mark Ryden, Alex Grey, Daniel Martin Diaz, Billy Gibbons, James Hetfield, Ace Frehley, Ozzy Osbourne, Tommy Lee, Dave Grohl, Kirk Hammett, David Stoupakis, Marilyn Manson, Jerry Cantrell, Sas Christian, Rob Zombie, Paul Booth and Mark Mothersbaugh to name a few. The exhibit is curated by Curse Mackey; an artist, musician and creative director of the Action Arts Agency. Guitars in the exhibit are the Dean ML model, which Darrell Abbott played throughout his career.

Darrell Abbott was best known as the lead guitarist for Pantera. The multi-platinum, Grammy nominated band dominated the heavy metal world in the 90’s. The musician was shot and killed on December 8, 2004, while performing onstage with Damageplan. He was 38 years old.

Six-String Masterpieces was created by Curse Mackey, creative director of the Action Arts Agency, to honor Abbot’s memory. Last year, the guitar exhibit was on tour displayed all over the world including SxSW, Ozzfest, Family Values Tour, MTV Studios, London and Tokyo. Los Angeles will be the last stop for the exhibit. La Luz De Jesus will preview the entire collection from May 4th through May 16th. On May 17, the collection moves to House of Blues, Sunset Strip.

“This is a comprehensive collection. Some of these instruments of art will be amongst the most valuable guitars ever introduced.” said Mackey.

The guitars will be auctioned off at the Six-String Masterpieces event at House of Blues on May 17 followed by an all-star benefit concert with proceeds from both the auction and the concert earmarked to support Little Kids Rock, an innovative non-profit music education program that puts music education back into public schools by providing free instruments and lessons to students.

Confirmed performers include: Dave Navarro, Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, Vinnie Paul (Pantera, Damageplan) and a rare acoustic performance by Alice in Chains.

Auction Bidding will take place at both La Luz De Jesus Gallery and online. Those who are unable to attend the auction but would like to participate can view the full catalog online and leave absentee bids beginning April 24 at the official bid site http://www.liveauctioneers.com/browse/seller/sixstringmasterpieces. Live online bidding for those registered will commence at 6pm PDT on May 17 during the House of Blues Auction event.

The Live Auction will be directed by Robert Berman of Santa Monica Auctions. Online Bidding Services are provided by www.LiveAuctioneers.com. Both of these organizations have donated their vital services to this project.

LA LUZ DE JESUS is located in the Soap Plant/WACKO building, in East Hollywood at 4633 Hollywood Blvd, 90027. The gallery hours are Monday – Wednesday: 11 am – 7 pm, Thursday - Saturday 11 am – 9 pm and Sunday 12 – 6 pm.

Otis Redding, the Mamas & the Papas and Al Kooper to be inducted into RockWall on May 11

OTIS REDDING, THE MAMAS & THE PAPAS, AND AL KOOPER TO BE INDUCTED INTO HOLLYWOOD’S ROCKWALK
40th Anniversary of Monterey Pop Saluted With Induction of Three of the Festivals Performers

WHO: The leading vocal group of the ’60s, the Mamas & the Papas epitomized the ‘60s pop culture of live free, play free and love free. Their folk foundation and extraordinary harmonies along with the easygoing southern California lifestyle they endorsed brought them legions of loyal fans.
Formed in 1965 by John Phillips, Michelle Phillips, Denny Doherty and Cass Elliott, the group headed to California where they auditioned for Lou Adler at Dunhill Records who signed them on the spot. Their debut single “California Dreamin’” shot up the charts and was followed by their album If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears. In addition to the album’s two hit singles “California Dreamin’” and “Monday, Monday,” other memorable songs on the album included “Go Where You Wanna Go,” and “Got A Feeling.” They released two albums over the next two years spawning the hit songs “I Saw Her Again,” “Words of Love,” “Dedicated to the One I Love,” “Creeque Alley,” and “Twelve-Thirty.”
In the late spring of 1967, John Phillips’ influence on popular culture reached an all time high when he and Lou Adler organized the Monterey International Pop Festival. Celebrating its 40th Anniversary this year, the Monterey International Pop Festival was the first and most renowned of all the rock festivals of the 1960s. The festival helped to launch the careers of dozens of acts including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who, Otis Redding and Al Kooper. Their fourth album, a collection of their greatest hits, The Papas & the Mamas was released in 1968 followed by their final album, People Like Us, which was released in 1971 following a year apart due to the band disbanding.

Born into a Baptist minister’s family in southern Georgia, Otis Redding began his career as a singer and musician at an early age in the choir of the Vineville Baptist Church. After years of hard work performing in churches and at talent shows, Redding’s sacrifices paid off with the release of “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.”
His concert tours were amongst the biggest box office successes of his time and in June of 1967, Otis Redding performed for 200,000 at the Monterey International Pop Festival. His energy, showmanship and his relationship with the crowd made Redding a performer who had a rare gift of being able to reach both white and black audiences at the time. 1968 was set to be his greatest year of success; nominated for three GRAMMY awards his hit “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of The Bay went on to win both R&B Vocal Performance and R&B Song. He had appearances slated at New York’s Philharmonic and Washington’s Constitution Hall, along with television appearances set for The Ed Sullivan Show, The Smothers Brothers Show and his own television special; but Redding’s life was tragically cut short when his twin engine Beechcraft crashed on December 10, 1967.

A professional musician since his early teens, Al Kooper joined the Royal Teens in 1958, just after their #1 hit "Short Shorts." Kooper then went on to become a session-player guitarist and songwriter. After co-writing the #1 hit "This Diamond Ring for Gary Lewis, a friendship with producer Tom Wilson led to Kooper playing the signature organ riff on Dylan’s “Like A Rolling Stone,” as well as on the rest of the Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde albums. Kooper later joined the Blues Project whose urban blues sound graced three critically acclaimed records.
After three years with the Blues Project Kooper left to form the trend-setting Blood Sweat & Tears. After recording just one album with the band, Kooper took a job in the Columbia Records A&R department. Here, he began recording solo albums as well as continuing to do session work for the likes of The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and The Who.
In 1972, Kooper moved to Atlanta where he discovered Lynyrd Skynyrd. He formed his own label and produced their first three albums, which included the hits “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Saturday Night Special,” and “Free Bird.” Kooper went on to continue playing on sessions such as George Harrison’s#1 hit "All Those Years Ago" as well as touring with the likes of Dylan and Joe Walsh.
His 2005 solo release Black Coffee came out to rave reviews and Kooper has continued to produce, play and tour both as a solo artist and with some of music’s most legendary musicians. His catalogue work has been sampled by the likes of Jay-Z, The Beastie Boys and Pharcyde. In 2008 he will celebrate his 50th anniversary in the music business.

WHAT: Otis Redding will be posthumously inducted and The Mamas & the Papas and Al Kooper will be inducted into HOLLYWOOD’S ROCKWALK, the only sidewalk gallery dedicated to honoring those artists who have made a significant impact and lasting contribution to the growth and evolution of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Redding, The Mamas & the Papas and Al Kooper will join other equally accomplished musicians and innovators who have been inducted into RockWalk such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Johnny Cash, Van Halen, Bonnie Raitt, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, The Ramones, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, John Lee Hooker and Earth Wind & Fire.

WHERE: Hollywood’s RockWalk,

Hear Bjork's online concert May 5

I love Bjork. She does her own thing, not caring what anyone thinks and she's talented and innovated as well. And what about that swan dress?? I'd wear it, but she did it first. Don't miss this cool concert! ~M
