End o' week musings

Today I'm unveiling the first installment of my comic. It originally ran in Factor X magazine about 10 years ago-- much to my surprise! I wrote a column called Mickie's Zoo where I interviewed people behind the scenes in entertainment, as well as artists and anyone else I found interesting. At the time I was also fronting the hard rock, heavy metal band Morpheus. One day I opened the magazine to discover the comic strip, Naughty Mickie, next to my column. My friend, Byron Spearman, had decided to join the magazine's staff and offer a strip with me (sort of) as the main character. It's not all true, but it's fun and worth sharing. Byron has also promised to ink some more comics so you can enjoy a new one every week. I'd love to hear your thoughts and if you have any storyline suggestions I'll be happy to share your ideas with Byron.

I've had a busy week! Lots of dancing and a little yoga and not quite enough music. Last weekend was a wash because I ended up fighting a cold. I went to yoga class, then the grocery store and then home and made myself a veggie stew in my crock pot. I also took a nice nap. By Sunday evening I was feeling much better.

On Monday I went to the Huntington Library, Art Galleries and Botanical Gardens in San Marino to learn about their upcoming exhibit, "Pressed in Time: American Prints 1905-1950." It's going to be something you can visit with your entire family or just enjoy a nice afternoon alone. The images and work are amazing!

Tuesday I interview Tom Batiuk, the artist who creates the Funky Winkbean and Crankshaft comics. If you follow Funky, then you know that the character Lisa is going to die soon from her cancer. I asked him about his decision to cover such heady topics, how he began drawing and more.

Last night (Thursday), I was in a parade and belly danced on stage at the Los Angeles County Fair. The parade was fun - so many smiling faces - and they must like us because we were in front of, not behind, the donkeys! Our 30-minute show on the big stage went well. The majority of the audience stayed for the entire show-- which is tough when there are so many things going on at the Fair. They got the humor, oooed and ahhhed at the sword work and applauded quite often. After we finished several people came up to ask us where we will be next and had lots of compliments. They had a good time and so did we!

Tonight I'm heading out to see Joe Walla Band perform at The Hub in Colton-- it's bike night, yay! Sunday is full with yoga, an Esoteric Crime Bus Tour, The Subs at Dockside Grill in West Covina and finally Aluminum Marshmallow at Rude Dog's in Covina. Would you believe that I have nothing planned for Sunday??!? Next week more exciting interviews and dance practice for our Halloween show.

Enjoy the fun photos, including one of me in the Spider Pavilion at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County taken by James Carbone during our press day visit.

In rotation this week: Tribe of Gypsies, Wicked Tinkers, Nirvana, Dengue Fever, Cradle of Filth, The Wildhearts, Tiger Army and an assortment of other bits and pieces.

This week I'm looking to fire up my creativity, so I encourage you to do the same. This doesn't mean you have to write or play music or even dance, you can be creative in many ways, including sports, computers and housework. Just find something that gets you sparked and puts extra life into whatever you do. Make the best of every moment!

Keep on rockin'

StubHub offers parents ticket tips for Hannah Montana

StubHub, the world's largest ticket marketplace, has recognized the unparalleled demand for teen idol Hannah Montana’s upcoming nationwide tour, and in light of immediate sell-outs, is offering parents useful tips on finding tickets to her shows. Many fans have been recently disappointed when, despite logging online the minute an on-sale begins, no tickets were available for purchase. It’s an unfortunate reality of the primary distribution of tickets today, with Internet access inviting more buyers than ever before and limited numbers of tickets being made available to the general public.

Despite quick sell-outs, good news remains, as plenty of seats are being offered on StubHub’s ticket marketplace by those who were able to buy, some for as low as $65. The national average selling price for a Hannah Montana ticket on StubHub is an astounding $214. Her tour is currently the hottest selling tour of 2007 based on the dollar volume of tickets transacted through StubHub, outselling the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Justin Timberlake and Van Halen to date.

StubHub’s Tips for Parents
Remain patient, check StubHub daily for more reasonably priced tickets and wait for the market to adjust.
§ Sometimes waiting until a week before a show will yield the very best bargains and maybe a surprise for the little one who thought the show was sold out.

Set a price point that’s comfortable and within your budget. As the show approaches, keep your eyes peeled for price and location. If it appears, grab it before it’s gone. Sellers adjust prices daily on StubHub.
§ Consider attending shows in surrounding areas or on different dates. Ex. On StubHub, the average selling ticket price at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY to date is just $109, but the average price for the show at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY on 12/27 is $406. In some cases, it may be worth the drive for parents to save cash.

Other markets currently with more affordable price offers include:
Minneapolis, MN
Columbus, OH
Anaheim, CA
Los Angeles, CA
San Diego, CA
Tampa, FL
Sunrise, FL
Charlotte, NC

Only use reputable sites like StubHub which has a FanProtect™ Guarantee, doesn’t share your credit card information with sellers and is recommended by the Better Business Bureau.
Hannah Montana Tickets also make great holiday presents for kids since she has a slew of concert dates in late December and January.

“The market driven prices for Hannah Montana’s wildly popular tour may are skewing high currently, not unlike a company whose stock price soars after a positive earnings announcement. Although some people are purchasing, sellers will eventually have to adjust their prices to attract buyers,” said StubHub spokesperson, Sean Pate. “Thankfully there are hundreds of tickets available for her shows across the country so the access and choice remains for fans.”

StubHub manages an online ticket marketplace for the fans, but doesn’t purchase or own any tickets for resale itself. Tickets listed on StubHub are being priced by the general public and asking prices vary from the reasonable to occasionally the insane.

Hannah Montana Resale Pricing Trends
StubHub has reviewed the top ten Hannah Montana shows with the highest average selling price and found that nine of these shows will go on sale to the general public this Saturday. Sellers who have early access to tickets will typically list higher prices early on but as more tickets are listed onto the site after a general on sale, supply increases and asking prices decrease.

Dropkick Murphys album charts at #20

The DROPKICK MURPHYS have entered the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart at #20 by selling 28,168 copies of their highly anticipated THE MEANEST OF TIMES album in one week. The disc was also the #2 top-selling CD in Boston. THE MEANEST OF TIMES--their sixth full-length--marks the group's HIGHEST CHART DEBUT EVER and the first on their own Born & Bred Records in association with Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group.

THE MEANEST OF TIMES--which follows their breakthrough CD The Warriors Code, which debuted at #48 with 19,667 copies sold--is already garnering major critical praise, as evidenced below:

"Despite gaining mainstream exposure on last year's soundtrack to The Departed, Dropkick Murphys haven't softened their rough edges: The band's sixth album is a massive blast of exhalted noise via shouted, sore-throat choruses and brain crushing beats (along with a hint of bagpipes). But The Meanest of Times moves beyond just connecting the dots between working-class punk and ancient Celtic ditties, with surprisingly thoughtful songs that explore lives shaped by drunken violence and Catholicism--the brute fury of 'Shattered' alone provides reason enough to listen up."--Jon Young, SPIN, October 2007 (four-star review)

"Fiddles, mandolins, tin whistles and bagpipes continue to fight side-by-side with frenzied electric guitar, breathless bass lines, and hard hitting drums in the battle for punk domination. Whiskey, women, and wistfulness remain on the lyrical menu as does the band's familiar theme of family. In that regard, the devastating 'The State of Massachusetts' perfectly encapsulates the demons of parents whose children are placed in state care. Angry, joyous, danceable, gritty and Hub-specific, Meanest is everything you want in a Murphys record and a great inauguration for the band's newly minted indie label, Born & Bred Records." --Sarah Rodman, BOSTON GLOBE, September 25, 2007

"These seven Massachusetts guys know how to make even dire moments sound like a hot party. On their sixth album, fiddle, mandolin and other Gaelic accouterments adorn rave-ups like 'The State of Massachusetts,' reminding you they're a punk band with a Celtic twist. They're also songwriters--and good ones, too, preserving their party-boy reputation while turning out giant, soulful choruses on songs both manicured and memorable: Dig tunefully sotted jams like 'Tomorrow's Industry'..."--Christian Hoard, ROLLING STONE, September 20, 2007

"Nobody does Celtic punk better than the Dropkicks. And the Dropkicks have never done it better. Always competent at composing gutter poetry, hardcore jigs and smart, simple political tirades, this sixth full-length go-around ups both the folkie-Irish banjo picking and the breakneck singalongs. From the 'If I Should Fall From Grace With God'-inspired opener 'Famous For Nothing' to the bagpipe-fired 'Never Forget' there's nary a filler tune."--Jed Gottleib, BOSTON HERALD, September 18, 2007 (A- CD review)

"Dropkick Murphys play gruff punk with some rowdy Irish roots and offer no mercy for posers or phonies." --Jon Pareles, NEW YORK TIMES, September 14, 2007

"On The Meanest of Times they're in fine fettle and fighting trim...For the recording of 'Flanningan's Ball' a hard-charging many versed litany of drinking and dancing and donnybrooks, the band traveled to Ireland to record with the Pogues' Spider Stacey (whose voice is gravelly) and The Dubliners' legendary Ronnie Drew (whose voice sounds like gravel being pureed in a blender). The song is a stunner, which Casey and Barr trading verses with these two titans of Irish music, three generations demolishing Dorchester's Florian Hall from across the broad Atlantic."--Mike Millard, BOSTON PHOENIX, September 7, 2007 (cover story)

"Given that nothing seems to be broken--hell Martin Scorsese, who used their 'I'm Shipping Up To Boston' in his Oscar-winning The Departed, now name checks them in interviews--the Dropkick Murphys don't fuck with a good thing on The Meanest of Times. Famous for blending East Coast hardcore with whiskey-scorched Celtic folk, Beantown's favorite sons predictably make sure both are well represented... Proving the Murphys haven't forgotten their roots, the Gang Green-strength blast of hardcore that is 'Shattered' gives old-schoolers a reason to risk what's left of their teeth in the mosh pit. If anything has changed this time out, it's that the Murphys' Celtic songs sound more traditional than ever. The banjo-and-bagpipes-powered 'Fairmount Hill' practically bleeds unpasteurized Guinness, while the reeling '(F)lannigan's Ball' sounds like Saturday night in Dublin's suds-soaked Temple Bar district. It's all potent enough to make you reconsider your list of things to do before you die. If catching the Murphys in Boston for one of their infamous St. Patrick's Day shows isn't already a Top 10 mission, The Meanest of Times will convince you it's time to reprioritize." --Mike Usinger, ALTERNATIVE PRESS, October 2007 (4 out of 5 stars)

"These Boston punk-folk-sters owe a large musical debt to Irish punk-folksters the Pogues (payable, probably in Guinness). But if that's not a problem for Pogues singer Spider Stacy, who guests on '(F)lannigan's Ball,' then it's fine by us, given the gloriously raucous, hook-heavy nature of that track. Indeed, the bulk of the album consists of frenetic toe-tappers, such as the opener, 'Famous for Nothing,' which also showcases bagpiper Scruffy Wallace. And how can you dislike a band that has a bagpiper named Scruffy?" --Clark Collis, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, September 21, 2007.

"Beantown's favorite Celtic-punk rockers are back with their sixth studio album, "The Meanest of Times," celebrating family, loyalty and remembering where you came from. The band's in fine form, continuing its decade-old tradition of telling plain-speaking stories that don't need interpretation in rousing song. --Maxine Shen, NEW YORK POST, September 18, 2007

In a stunning collision of energy, empowerment and celebration, Chester Bennington, lead vocalist of Grammy-winning, multi-platinum rock band Linkin Park, joined Camp Freddy onstage last night for an unforgettable performance of Alice Cooper’s “I’m Eighteen.” Marking the high point of Declare Yourself’s “Hollywood Celebrates 18” event held in Los Angeles, the live track can only be heard exclusively on the Declare Yourself website (
Founded by Norman Lear, Declare Yourself is the national nonpartisan, nonprofit youth voter initiative aimed at empowering and encouraging America’s 18-year-olds to register and vote in the 2008 primaries and general election. “Hollywood Celebrates 18” was co-hosted by Lear with popular television star Hayden Panettiere (“Heroes”). The historic event also drew some of today’s most influential celebrities including Justin Timberlake, Kristin Bell, Chris Chaney, Sasha Cohen, Nick Cannon, Lauren Conrad, Nick D’Agosto, Julianne Hough, Dave Lieberman, Seth MacFarlane, Heidi Montag, Billy Morrison, Dave Navarro, Adrian Pasdar, Stephen Perkins, Plain White T’s, Zachary Quinto, Romeo, and Rumer Willis.
“I'm Eighteen” was originally recorded by Cooper in 1970 and became an instant classic. The crowd in attendance shouted the chorus as Camp Freddy members re-imagined the song as a rousing anthem with Bennington of Linkin Park on lead vocals, Chris Chaney of Jane’s Addiction on bass, Dave Navarro of Jane’s Addiction on guitar, Stephen Perkins of Jane’s Addiction on drums and Billy Morrison of The Cult on guitar.
"Nothing speaks louder to today’s young people more than music, and no song is more perfect for our campaign than “I’m Eighteen,” said Marc Morgenstern, executive director of Declare Yourself. “Research shows that if someone registers and votes when they first become eligible at 18, they become a life-long voter.”
In addition to the exclusive “I’m 18” performance, includes an on-line registration form and information covering voting in every state. Major Declare Yourself partners include Cricket Communications, Inc. (Presenting Sponsor), Yahoo! (Premier Online Information Partner), MySpace (Premier Social Networking Partner), Google, Evite, GOOD, Clear Channel, Comedy Central, American Eagle Outfitters and Starbucks. .

She has recorded and shared stages with The Indigo Girls and Bonnie Raitt in venues such as San Antonio’s Majestic Theater, Denver’s Red Rocks, and Berkeley’s Greek Theater. “Anyone who’s ever heard the sultry, bluesy voice of Caroline Aiken knows she’s the real deal. She infuses each song with true grit and years of performing experience, sanding down the rough edges just a little with her soft Southern drawl.”
-Mare Wakefield, DIY Salute, Performing Songwriter Magazine, 2005

"Caroline Aiken, often sighted as one of the cornerstones of the Decatur folk movement, has long been at the forefront of modern folk and acoustic expression… Her soothing, fine wood-grain voice purrs with a youthful innocence one minute, then growls like a wise old blue singer the next, marking each song with her trademark, time-honed stamp of quality."
- Georgia Music Magazine, July 2005

"…. Your performance was absolutely stellar. You made a bunch of new fans if the reactions I heard from the people was any indication. I can speak for one avid new fan who is very definitely going to be following anything you do---and that's me. Your stage presence and musicianship was fully as good or better than anything I have ever seen, and I've been a concert goer for most of my 50 something years. I will remember your version of "Madman Across the Water" as long as I have a memory…"

“If you play this record backwards, you'll still hear voices telling you to break shit, get arrested, and drink Jägermeister. They just might suggest you read a history book, too.” – VILLAGE VOICE

“the deeper you go into the record, the more reassured you become that these musicians know what they’re great at.” – NEW YORK TIMES

“if there were a list of heavy metal commandments, number 666 would read: “Thou shalt devote thyself to the worship of High On Fire”. Every riff Matt Pike unleashes is beyond colossal...Pay your respects.” – KERRANG!

“Already regarded as one of modern metal's most face-meltingly fantastic bands, High on Fire further solidifies its reputation with Death is This Communion, the Oakland trio's fourth, most commanding album.” – SAN FRANCISCO WEEKLY

“No longer the best stoner-metal band in the land, High on Fire is now clearly, simply one of the country's best metal bands, period.” – DALLAS OBSERVER

“shirtless metal somewhere between Motorhead's biker thunder and Slayer's muscular riffology. Still far and away one of the best metal acts going.” – AUSTIN AMERICAN STATESMAN

“the trio will steamroll your senses -- a year of nonstop touring behind 2005's Blessed Black Wings has made the already tight HoF an unstoppable metal monster” – NEW TIMES
"the apocalypse's doomy, amp-destroying fifth horseman... galloping mammoth metal" - SPIN

"unbelievably heavy...massive crunching riffs and drums that slam like vault doors" - REVOLVER

"HIGH ON FIRE build a temple to The Riff and preach its word as loudly as humanly possible" - AUSTIN CHRONICLE

"For a band getting as much crossover attention as they do, locals High on Fire have remained staunchly, unapologetically metal over the years. Celtic Frost-meets-the Melvins riffage, topped off with vocals so hoarse they make Lemmy sound like a choirboy." - SAN FRANCISCO BAY GUARDIAN

"the sound of the planet getting broadsided by a shower of asteroids, and the crushing terror of 20-story stone beasts methodically obliterating everything in their path with each malevolent stomp. And you won't want it to end." - PHOENIX NEW TIMES

The Real Tuesday Weld offers new effort

Vintage English songster, Stephen Coates a.k.a. The Real Tuesday Weld, shines on WNYC’s Soundcheck, YouTube takes notice and features the inventive Elliot Kew directed “Cloud Cuckooland” video.

“The London Book of The Dead gives yesterday's music its due, and in the process brings an elegance and refinement to the sounds of today.” – Miami New Times

“The London Book of The Dead reverberates with echoes of everything from Tin Pan Alley to Tom Waits.” – Metromix

The Real Tuesday Weld a.k.a. Stephen Coates recently appeared on WNYC’s Soundcheck with John Schaefer . Coates discussed his album The London Book of The Dead, his inspirations, and life growing up in England. Schaefer described The Real Tuesday Weld as “Serge Gainsbourg and Cole Porter on Absinthe creating an old-fashioned radio play.” YouTube has also taken notice of Coates and is currently featuring The Real Tuesday Weld’s new video for the The London Book of The Dead track “Cloud Cuckooland.”

The first thing that strikes you about any album by The Real Tuesday Weld is the fact that every element in Coates’ compositions seems to be drawn from sources many decades old. The second thing that strikes you is that his music sounds completely new.

For Coates, the breakthrough in his professional journey came in the form of a pair of surreal dreams in which he was visited by the legendary English music hall singer Al Bowlly and the late actress Tuesday Weld. These experiences convinced him to focus on a career in music and eventually led to the recording of The Valentine EP, which would be followed shortly by the full-length When Cupid Meets Psyche.

His sophomore album and debut on Six Degrees is a deeply complex and lovely full-length CD titled I, Lucifer. The album is a conceived soundtrack to Glen Duncan’s (Coates’ friend and former flatmate) book of the same name about the Devil’s take on humanity.

Coates’s follow-up release on Six Degrees, The Return of The Clerkenwell Kid, continued to develop what Coates has come to call his “antique beat” sound, putting modern technology to the task of creating new music out of a kaleidoscopic array of old sound sources. The sound of The Return of The Clerkenwell Kid was somewhat different from that of its predecessor, but the modus operandi remained basically the same and no one would ever mistake it for anything other than an album by The Real Tuesday Weld.

This brings us back to his latest, and anxiously awaited, album for the Six Degrees label. The London Book of The Dead may sound at first like a startlingly morose title, but in fact it’s more whimsically humorous than morbid. It refers to the Bardo Thodol (or “Tibetan Book of The Dead”), which describes the passage of the soul from the end of one life to the beginning of another.

“I thought it would be funny if there were a book like that for the English,” says Coates. “The album felt like that to me – a way of moving from one state to another, and all set against the backdrop of this city.”

Amongst the whimsy and humor are lyrical concerns drifting between such weighty topics as death, religious faith, honesty, drugs, and disease. The songs are informed in part by Coates’s own recent passage through several significant events: “Last year I became a father, and then two weeks later my own father died,” he says. “So I was in this kind of psychic spin between birth and death, and this album came out of that in some way.”

“The Real Tuesday Weld is a pop magician breathing new life into a world of vintage, dust-scratched music, inspired by old-time heroes like Cole Porter and raunchy baroque popster Serge Gainsbourg. Waving his wand over everything from dusty country and western to doo-wop, Coates gives this ancient warehouse of sounds a twenty-first century makeover, resplendent with the finest beats, breaks and samples.” – Time Out London

“By mixing flapper jazz with oddball computer instrumentation, Coates has… headed into uncharted territory... Where most down-tempo electronic music aims lazily at dinner parties or weed-addled folk lazing on sofas, The Real Tuesday Weld conjures an era when the chaise lounge was king and the smoking jacket mandatory.” – The London Telegraph

“The superbly arranged, wickedly clever textures and beats will set your toes to tapping, but its bittersweet melodies will linger for days and weeks.” – LA Weekly

“Imagine an English-speaking Serge Gainsbourg rolling around Tin Pan Alley with synthesizer in hand.” – The New Yorker

“Pairing Portishead’s dark theatrics with Serge Gainsbourg’s dirty-old-man mirth, Coates’ melancholic take on love is devilishly good!” – Wired

Neko Case to re-release effort with bonus material

Respected and beloved singer/songwriter Neko Case will see the re-release of her acclaimed 2006 album Fox Confessor Brings The Flood with the addition of a five-song bonus disc from Anti- on November 6th, 2007. The label will also serve-up straight reissues of 2000’s Furnace Room Lullaby - - which was recorded as Neko Case and Her Boyfriends - - and 2002’s Blacklisted on the same date.

Bonus material for the updated version of Fox Confessor will boast a previously unreleased demo version of the song “Behind The House,” plus a four-song sampler that includes full-length versions of Blacklisted excerpts “Deep Red Bells” and “I Wish I Was The Moon,” plus the title track from Furnace Room Lullaby and the album’s first cut “Set Out Running.”

Originally issued on March 7th, 2006, Fox Confessor Brings The Flood topped a myriad of the year’s “Best of” lists and has been unanimously praised. Entertainment Weekly called it “Her finest album” while Spin raved, “Her majestically outsize voice is one of pop music’s best.” Newsweek wrote, “With a big soaring voice belting out songs full of eerie, enigmatic poetry, Case sounds like the brooding sister of Patsy Cline or Loretta Lynn” and The Washington Post added, “Her out of this world voice brings instant chills.”

In a four-and-a-half star review of 2002’s Blacklisted was listed as “highly recommended” by All Music Guide, and described as “a personal exploration of the heart and soul that proves sad and beautiful can often walk hand in hand.”

As for Furnace Room Lullaby, Interview dubbed it a “deceptively effortless shot at high art, each tune alternately smoky and barbed-wire taut with more than a taste of rainforest melancholy.”

2007 has been a tremendously busy year for Neko. Currently on tour with the indie rock band The New Pornographers in support of their new album Challengers, Case recently wrapped a successful tour with Rufus Wainwright.

System of a Down's John Dolmayan lauches Torpedo Comics

With multi-Platinum rock band System of a Down currently on hiatus and his Scars on Broadway project with SOAD's Daron Malakian in the early stages, drummer John Dolmayan will fulfill his other passion of comic books and collectibles by launching Torpedo Comics ( ), an exclusively Internet-based retail store.
Torpedo Comics goes live on November 1, 2007, and will boast some 15-million items - comic books, toys, graphic novels, trade paperbacks, superhero action figures and other comic book-related memorabilia, ranging in price from 99-cents to six-figures.
Dolmayan, who has been collecting comic books since he was 12, houses Torpedo Comics' inventory in a just-completed 30,000-square foot warehouse in Las Vegas, NV where he now lives. He employs a staff of 25 who catalogue and care for rare items like Sensation Comics issue #1 (the first solo series featuring Wonder Woman), just about every key issue of Marvel and DC comics including Marvel Comics' issue #1, multiple copies of Giant Size X-Men #1, plus superhero action figures from Marvel, X-Men, Superman, and Batman titles.
Torpedo Comics will also offer original comic art, created between the 1940s and the present, by some 150 different artists, including Jim Lee, Art Adams, Bernie Wrightson, and Alejandro Gaza.
Dolmayan incorporated his love for comic books into the drum kit that he played during System of a Down's 2006 tour. Dolmayan contacted 22 of his favorite comic book artists, including Jim Lee, Simon Bisley, Kevin Eastman, Neal Adams and Bill Sienkiewicz, were each sent various pieces of the drum kit onto which they drew original illustrations.
As for Dolmayan and Malakian's Scars on Broadway venture, the two have been writing and rehearsing new material and plan to begin recording their debut album today, September 27, intended for a Summer 2008 release.
As drummer for System of a Down, Dolmayan shared in the band's global success of some 20-million albums sold, headlining sold-out arenas, having three consecutive #1 albums on the Billboard charts, four Grammy nominations and one win for Best Hard Rock Performance, all the while maintaining a high musical integrity, its core fan base, and its position as one of the most unique band in rock.

Galactic on Conan

GALACTIC will embark on an extensive, six-week North American trek next month in support of the quintet’s recently-released and widely-heralded Anti- debut From The Corner To The Block. The New Orleans-based frontrunners of futuristic funk will launch the tour in Flagstaff, Arizona on October 11th and wrap the far-reaching initiative with a coveted performance on NBC’s “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” on November 19th.

Joined by The Coup’s Boots Riley and special guests Lifesavas on all dates, Jurassic 5’s Chali 2na will also be featured with GALACTIC through to October 27th. Mr. Lif will then jump on the tour as special guest along with Riley and Lifesavas October 31 - November 18. Counting these esteemed artists and more, From The Corner To The Block merges GALACTIC’s renowned funk fusion with an array of today’s most innovative hip-hop MC’s including Lyrics Born, Gift of Gab of Blackalicious, Lateef the Truthspeaker, Digable Planets’ Ladybug Mecca and multi-platinum rapper Juvenile.

Weighty praise has been abundant, with The New York Daily News calling From The Corner To The Block “the most exciting hip-hop album of the year. It’s the hottest rock-rap fusion since peak Beastie Boys.” Elsewhere, The Fader, The Village Voice, Relix, Playboy, CMJ, Vibe,, Harp, Daily Variety and Rolling Stone have all championed the disc.

Esquire hit the nail on the head, insisting, “On what seems like the first true post-post Katrina record, home grown instrumental funkateers GALACTIC have found a way to celebrate New Orleans by forging forward without looking back at the disaster”.

Meanwhile, acclaim from Filter was equally apropos: “GALACTIC is too hot for New Orleans. This digitized voodoo funk makes the Meters look like the goddamned glee club, and y’all know the Neville Brothers ain’t never gotten Juvenille and Chali 2na to collaborate on the same record. Shit, these electric bayou grooves got the pain peelin’ off the walls a’ my kitchen, and my woman done lost her shirt and gone shakin’ in the streets. You best bring in the fire squad – Louisiana’s burning.”

The respected MC’s that contributed to From The Corner To The Block were asked to approach their lyrics with one uniform concept: Corners. Stemming from the idea that GALACTIC’s hometown is full of evocative street names inspired by history, mythology and multiple ethnicities, guest artists were asked to think of an intersection that was important to them.
Just as every corner is an intersection of two paths – for instance New Orleans’ own “Law and Desire” or “Martin Luther King and Oretha Castle Haley” – the disc is a meeting of two different styles of music.

After sharing stages with giant M.C.s like The Roots, Talib Kweli, and Jurassic 5, said collaborations seeded the uplifting, thought-stirring and undisputedly natural merger of GALACTIC’s electrified funk and hip-hop’s insightful lyricism on From The Corner To The Block. Resetting expectations of what GALACTIC can be, bassist Robert Mercurio, guitarist Jeff Raines, keyboardist Richard Vogel, drummer Stanton Moore and saxophonist and project co-producer Ben Ellman, married two types of New Orleans street music with remarkable finesse.

Old school Brass Band second line grooves meet bounce style inspired hip-hop on the title track for which GALACTIC enlisted native superstar Juvenile – with whom the band previously performed on Jimmy Kimmel Live – and the up and coming Soul Rebels Brass Band. On the track “Second & Dryadres” the band called on Mardi Gras Indian Big Chief Monk Boudreaux whose chants blend seamlessly with the bands electro funk sound thanks to Ben Ellman’s innovative production.

Gibson releases Dave Grohl model guitar

Gibson Guitar, the world's premier musical instrument manufacturer and leader in music technology, announced the release of the new Dave Grohl model guitar, the DG-335, that will be available to Foo Fighters fans and guitarists, alike, on Thursday, October 4th, 2007. This new guitar is inspired by Grohl's much loved Trini Lopez signature model. The new model, created by the artisans at the Gibson Custom Shop with the input of Grohl himself, will provide rock fans a chance to channel the Foo Fighters' renowned lead singer.

Grohl has always been a long-time fan of the Trini Lopez signature model guitar that Gibson built from 1964-1971. The Trini Lopez model was a striking take on Gibson's classic ES-335 semi-hollow body guitar which is a hybrid between a solidbody and a hollowbody. Grohl has a particular love for the Trini Lopez in a rare Pelham Blue color that was used by the Gibson Custom Shop in producing this limited model.

Grohl's Inspired By DG-335 has the classic Firebird-style headstock with six-on-a-side tuners set into an ES-335 style semi-hollow body. The body of the guitar has stylish diamond f-holes and a double cutaway design. The inlays on the rosewood fretboard are acrylic split diamond which is a unique feature that remains from the original Trini Lopez model. Grohl's taste is even expressed through the pickups which are Burstbucker 1 in the neck and Burstbucker 2 in the bridge. These pickups are within the original Patent Applied For humbucking spec, known for their ability to create clean and articulate distortion and responsible for helping to deliver the amazing tones that Grohl has become famous for while fronting the ever popular Foo Fighters.

The guitar is offered in Grohl's favorite Pelham Blue. An Ebony version is also available. The MSRP is $4,468 for the blue and $3,880 for the ebony. Each guitar includes a Custom Shop case and special certificate of authenticity signed by Grohl, himself.

Jon McLaughlin's tour continues

American heartland singer-songwriter and pianist Jon McLaughlin’s non-stop touring in support of INDIANA, his first album for Island Records, will receive maximum exposure when he opens for Kelly Clarkson on her much-anticipated 24-city North American tour, starting with three nights at the Beacon Theatre in New York, October 14-16th. (Please see tour dates below.)

Jon’s summertime tour schedule included a month-long 17-city trip with northern California singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles. Those dates wrap up this Saturday and immediately segue into two weeks with Scottish singer-songwriter Paolo Nutini (starting Sunday, September 30th). The itinerary climaxes with a solo headlining homecoming concert on October 13th at Anderson University, Jon’s hometown alma mater in Indiana. The very next night, he returns to the road on the Kelly Clarkson tour (postponed from the summer).

Named one of “The 10 Hot Guys of Summer” by US Weekly magazine, Jon was seen performing on the CBS-TV daytime drama The Bold & The Beautiful last month. This was a busy season for Jon, who was featured in June on the NPR (National Public Radio) program “Weekend Edition,” which resulted in INDIANA rocketing up the Amazon charts.

Also in June, Jon performed “Beautiful Disaster” live on NBC’s The Today Show. USA Today highlighted the song, noting: “The title’s first word is how he sees her. The second word is how she sees herself. The sad thing is he’s right.” The video for “Beautiful Disaster,” the current single, reached 13 on the VH1 Top 20 Countdown. On Tuesday night, August 7th, Jon made his premiere appearance on NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

INDIANA’s title tune pays tribute to Jon’s hometown of Anderson. He has written songs for the album with the Matrix, Jamie Houston, Grammy-nominated Marcus Hummons, Matthew Gerard, and Kevin Griffin (of Better Than Ezra). The album was produced by Jamie Houston (credits: Santana, Jessica Simpson, Macy Gray, The Calling) and Greg Wells (Natasha Bedingfield, Veronicas, OTEP, Rufus Wainwright); and was mixed by Chris Lord Alge.

Jon will make his own big screen debut in Enchanted, the new Disney animated-and-live comedy starring Susan Sarandon, Idina Menzel, Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams scheduled to open this fall. Jon will be singing (onscreen) “So Close”, a song written for the movie soundtrack by Stephen Schwartz.

People magazine praised Jon’s “charm and chops, as evident on tunes like the title cut, on which this boy earnestly confesses that he’s not so ready to meet the big bad world.” Since its launch in May, nearly 800,000 Hoosiers and others have been attracted to Jon’s myspace website ( More than 2.2 million plays have been logged on the site, which features four songs from the album: “Beautiful Disaster,” “Indiana,” “Industry,” and “Human.” Jon can also be reached via

Affordable wedding music

Mark Magnuson , a guitarist and arranger from Colorado Springs, CO, has recently released his second album "Acoustic Wedding". The CD contains 20 wedding ceremony classics, played in beautifully simple acoustic guitar arrangements. "Even the guests were barefoot", said Shanna Taylor of her beachfront wedding.
"We loved the music, and it fit our wedding perfectly. Some weddings call for orchestras, trumpets, or pipe organs. Some do not. The elegance and simplicity of an instrumental acoustic guitar created a perfect ambiance. This was opulence on a budget!"
To help stressed-out brides who need music in a hurry, Mark also provides the music tracks in a low cost, instant delivery download for less than a dollar per song at
Guitar sheet music is also offered for immediate download on the website, as well as wedding music planning tips.
New bride Tara adds, "I put the money I saved on more expensive music into my honeymoon instead. I didn't have to hire musicians or make sure the song length was perfect timing for my walk down the aisle. The CD included emotional, touching versions of recognizable wedding ceremony classics."
Acoustic Wedding tracks include Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring (Bach), Minuet (Bach), Rondeau (Mouret), Spring (Four Seasons) (Vivaldi), Air on the G String (Bach), Hornpipe (Handel), Ave Maria (Schubert), Sheep May Safely Graze (Bach), Air (Water Music) (Handel), Ode to Joy (Beethoven), Alla Luce Del Dio (Magnuson), Canon in D (Pachelbel), Trumpet Tune (Purcell), Trumpet Voluntary (Clarke), Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow (Bourgeois), All Creatures of Our God and King (von Brachel), Now Thank We All Our God (Cruger), The Bridal Chorus (Wagner), The Wedding March (Mendelssohn).
"A primary goal for me is to produce honest genuine music that resonates in people's soul," Mark explains. "Great art is preserved throughout the centuries because it means something to people. It moves them; to dancing, to tears, to motivation, to laughter, to healing. Music is emotional; it is spiritual, foundational, personal."

Take a Halloween Horrors Crime Bus tour

On Sunday, October 28, Esotouric offers its most disturbing Crime Bus tour yet, Halloween Horrors with Crimebo the Clown. This four-hour jaunt spans downtown, Hollywood, Echo Park and the Eastern San FernandoValley while offering a grimly hilarious look at more than two dozen peculiar and long-forgotten crimes, including several with a Halloween theme. Vintage crime scene photos are featured, with passengers urged to BYOBB (bring your own barf bag), always a smart idea when Crimebo the Crime Clown is in attendance.
Ghost Hosts Kim Cooper and Nathan Marsak have dug into the archives to uncover such terrible tales as the lady dope dealer left with her eyes gouged out on Echo Park's Lovers' Lane, the one-time silent screen star who died alone and was gnawed on by her doggy, the trick or treat murder of the handsome hairstylist, an astrologer and a palm reader who didn't foresee being killed by the women they loved, Silver Lake's exploding gun shop, the poignant death of the bravest dog in Hollywood, plus visits to Bela Lugosi's home, Crimebo's tales of Halloween celebrations gone terribly wrong and history of holiday pranks in Los Angeles, plus light-hearted oddities like the mysterious midnight disappearance of thousands of cucumbers from a Hollywood farm.
The tour is dedicated to the memory of a brave little San Fernando Valley girl Deborah Lohr, who in 1962, accompanied by a friend dressed as a beatnik, stood too near a jack-o-lantern and had her hula costume go up in flames. Deborah's terrible death led to many changes in how Halloween was celebrated in Los Angeles, from fireproof costumes, battery-powered lights in pumpkins, masks offering better visibility when crossing streets and greater parental supervision.
Passengers on this eye-opening, funny (yet horrifying) and informative tour will leave with a new understanding of Halloween in old Los Angeles, and the promise of nightmares. It is highly recommended for natives and newcomers, crime and history buffs and anyone who likes to seek out the unexpected.

Killswitch Engage and Lamb of God unite for tour

Grab your earplugs and prepare for some of the most earth shattering, blazingly deafening metal you will hear this holiday season! Genre defining metal titans Killswitch Engage and Lamb of God have announced that they will be teaming up for a late fall co-headlining tour. Almost four years after their first run together on MTV2’s Headbangers Ball Tour, the two powerhouses have reunited to bring holiday mayhem throughout the US. The tour will begin on November 28th in Lowell, Massachusetts and end on December 17th in Albuquerque, New Mexico with Lamb of God and Killswitch Engage alternating headlining slots each night. Directly supporting these metal juggernauts will be DevilDriver, with Swedish metallers Soilwork kicking off the show each evening.

After a successful premier run on Warped Tour 2007, Killswitch Engage recently released As Daylight Dies Special Edition, a CD/DVD combo featuring the MySpace video favorite and current Active Rock hit "Holy Diver." The special edition also features previous unreleased studio tracks and full music videos for “My Curse,” “The Arms of Sorrow” and of course “Holy Diver.” Poised to conquer, this tour will bring the band full circle – honoring the metal fans that have been with them from the start and have helped them gain such notable success.

Lamb of God will be wrapping up the Sacrament album cycle with this tour. After 18 months of touring with Slayer, Megadeth, Ozzfest, Heaven and Hell, and headlining runs in the US, Japan, Australia, UK and Europe, Lamb of God will take 2008 off to prepare for a new CD. Fans will get a new dose of Lamb of God in 2008 with a full length DVD, set for release in the spring. The DVD will document the entire Sacrament experience, beginning with rehearsals for the albums recording straight through this headline run.

Roadrunner artist, DevilDriver, will be offering direct support for the tour in support of their latest release, The Last Kind Words, which has been received with high critical and fan acclaim. Offering a melting pot of metallic influences, DevilDriver deliver a binding mix of jarring drums, grinding guitars, and unmistakably brutal vocals by front man Dez Fafara. Also joining the tour will be Swedish melodic metal masters, Soilwork, who will be releasing their new album Sworn to a Great Divide on October 19th via Nuclear Blast Records.

Take a break from the holiday melee to witness the sheer metal madness of Lamb of God and Killswitch Engage united. “Yes the rumors are true, Killswitch and Lamb of God are back together again” Killswitch vocalist Howard Jones affirms. “We had our honeymoon four years ago and now it’s time to renew our metal vows. This is your official invitation - the only one you will ever need.” Chris Adler from Lamb of God adds "Touring the Sacrament album has been some of the most exciting times we have ever experienced. It has taken us around the world several times over, playing the biggest shows of our career with some of the best bands in the business and in front of the greatest fans in the world. We are tighter, stronger and smarter than we have ever been and before we put the machine that is Lamb of God to bed for a little while and call an end to the touring cycle, we want to bring it to the next level. So together with our true friends in Killswitch, DevilDriver and Soilwork we plan to bring you something that won't be forgotten. Thanks to everyone who has supported us and we are looking forward to one more brutal evening with all of you!!!"

Presale tickets will go on sale on October 3 through and Tickets go on sale to the public on October 12 and 13 – check your local listings for details.

Sex Pistols to play L.A.

“There has never been a band like the Sex Pistols, and there very likely never will be another band like the Sex Pistols…the Pistols are one of those rare groups that signify much more than can be conveyed in history books and myth-debunking documentaries, or even the music itself.” Ben Wener of the Orange County Register wrote those words after seeing the band give a devastating performance at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles in September 2003, and he concluded by proclaiming: “there still is no greater punk band.”
To kick start their “holiday in the sun,” the SEX PISTOLS---who were last NOT seen at their Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction in 2006--again descend on Los Angeles, this time when they play a special private club show for fans Thursday, October 25 at The Roxy. This gig by original members John Lydon, Steve Jones, Paul Cook and Glen Matlock is made possible by Indie 103.1, Guitar Hero® III: Legends Of Rock and Helio and marks the group’s first-ever appearance at the historic rock club--in fact, it’s their first-ever club show in Los Angeles--and comes in advance of three shows at The Brixton Academy in London (November 8, 9 and 10) which sold out in an amazing 15 minutes. Another show at The Brixton Academy on the 12th of November and one in Manchester at the MEN Arena November 17 have been added due to overwhelming demand. Listeners can win tickets to the Roxy show by tuning in to Indie 103.1 or going to
The Roxy and upcoming U.K. shows coincide with celebration of the 30th anniversary of the 1977 release of Never Mind The Bollocks…Here’s The Sex Pistols. To accompany the celebrations, Never Mind The Bollocks…Here’s The Sex Pistols and its blistering singles “Anarchy In The UK,” “God Save The Queen,” “Pretty Vacant” and “Holidays In The Sun” will be re-issued on vinyl in their exact original format throughout October for the album’s 30th anniversary. The NME are also campaigning to push “God Save The Queen” to its rightful place at the number one spot in the singles chart, not that the band have ever cared about chart positions, especially after what happened back in 1977. It missed out on the top originally after radio, TV and even some record shops banned it amid rumors that the charts were rigged to prevent it from reaching #1.
“The Sex Pistols are legendary for defining the punk movement. Activision is proud to partner with them to once again make music history by re-recording their hit ‘Anarchy in the U.K.’ for our upcoming Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock game, and sponsoring this historic event,” said Kai Huang, president and co-founder of RedOctane.
"The Sex Pistols are iconic and will forever be known as the innovators who initiated a movement that connected people through music," said Kieran Hannon, EVP of Marketing at Helio. "We're proud to be a part of this performance as we're also about connecting people, for us with the best and most innovative mobile experience there is."
