Last chance to see Dave Lovejoy's "Bouble Vision"

The weekend of the upcoming ArtNight Pasadena, October 9-11, will be the last opportunity to see Dave Lovejoy's "Bouble Vision" art installation in the courtyard at 88 N. Fair Oaks.

Consisting of 1000 magnifying glasses suspended by over a mile of galvanized steel wire, the work has been hanging from the arbor in front of Majestical Roof since ArtNight 2008, when it was installed as part of Lovejoy's exhibition, "Circular Logic", made possible in part by a generous grant from the City Of Pasadena Department of Cultural Affairs.

Pearl Aday to release new album

Things to look forward to in January 2010: Pearl Aday, who is quickly making a name for herself in the music world, will release her US debut collection, “Little Immaculate White Fox.”

With a rock lineage that declares her, “To the manor born,” Pearl has created a collection of songs that takes you on a rock and roll journey. She was named after the infamous Janis Joplin, God Daughter to Maria Muldaur, daughter of Meat Loaf and wife to Scott Ian of Anthrax. In addition, she has toured as a back-up singer with Motley Crue and she and her band have opened for Velvet Revolver.

In a synchronistic tale told to her startled pregnant mom before she was born, a psychic said, “Your daughter will sing and will resemble a Little Immaculate White Fox.” Pearl, all grown now with a mane of platinum curls, a long, lithe figure and innocent look on her face with the slyness and intelligence of a fox, has been injected with the passion for rock and roll and is cutting a path across the music world.

Her new cd, with the help of husband and band member Scott Ian of Anthrax, is a cross between raw rock and roll and a sweetness that comes from Pearl’s soul. The band has created a sound that combines influences from all genres of rock: from blues to heavy Metal. Pearl adds , “I just want to bring it all back to the real rock and roll, the soul, the emotion. I strip it all down and it comes from a raw and naked place inside me.”

Other friends appear on the CD including Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains) and Ted Nugent on separate tracks. The album was produced by Joe Barresi (Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Bad Religion.) and features original songs with the exception of a soulful and rocking cover of Tina Turner’s “Nutbush City Limits” produced by Pearl (the band) and mixed by Warren Riker. In addition, the newest original track Broken White was produced and mixed by Jay Ruston (The Donnas, Steel Panther)."

PEARL is: Pearl Aday (vocals) Marcus Blake (bass) Nalle Colt (guitar) Jim Wilson (guitar) Scott Ian (guitar) and Eric Andrews (drums).

Laminated Cat releases new album

Apples leader, Robert Schneider, calls Athens, GA band, Laminated Cat, “the best young psychedelic band in years.”

The second release for Schneider and family’s new Garden Gate label features cover art by Hart and Doss of Olivia Tremor Control.

[MP3] Laminated Cat - “Aquamarine”:
http://tinyurl.com/laminatedcat-aquamarine

Umbrella Weather: Ornate psychedelia pours from the loudspeakers, ranging from delicate to druggy. Acoustic guitars give way to flourishes of orchestrated static. Fuzz pedals filter exotic riffs. A ghostly voice conjures dreams in pop song format. One experimental composer, one multi-instrumentalist, and two identical twins add up to layers of epic, psychedelic bliss.

While we are engaged in numerology, let us note that no member was over 21 as of the recording of the album. Singer/guitarist Tanner Smith graduated with a degree in experimental composition. Smith’s younger brothers, twins Camden and Cooper, play drums and bass like a steam-powered ocean liner. Singer/multi-instrumentalist AJ Griffin’s songs lean more toward Americana than Smith’s—plaintive, yearning, soaked in layers of soulful psychedelia.

Umbrella Weather is the second release on Garden Gate, the psychedelic label operated by brother-sister team Craig Morris and Marci Schneider, wife of Robert Schneider, with input from the Apples (in stereo) leader. The album features cover art by W. Cullen Hart and Bill Doss (Olivia Tremor Control) and was engineered by Craig Morris in the Garden Gate studio, where much of the gear is hand-built by Morris himself.

Polysics release new album digitally today

Polysics, the forward-thinking, avant garde, electronic band from Japan is releasing its eight effort today in digital format. Entitled Absolute Polysics, the band is firing on all cylinders daring any listener to remain still during the record’s frantic and chaotic 14 tracks.

Influenced by the new wave stylings of Devo, Polysics founding member Hiroyuki Hayashi, aka Hiro, knew he had to form his own band after listening to the Akron, Ohio band.

“I was shocked by it,” Hiro says of his first experience with Devo. “I thought it was so much more punk than just acting like a gang by greasing one’s hair. I was so impressed, and I thought, ‘I want to do new wave punk dressed in a jumpsuit like Devo!’”

Formed over ten years ago, Polysics (Hiro on vocals, guitar, programming; Kayo, synthesizer, vocals; Fumi, bass; Yano, drums) has released eight full-length releases in their native Japan. The band, now signed to MySpace Records, released the definitive Polysics compilation POLYSICS OR DIE!!!! VISTA in 2007 which went on to become their best selling U.S. release.

Previously Polysics wowed boys and girls across America in support of Hellogoodbye, and Say Anything on the first-ever MySpace Music Tour. Last year, the band headlined North America in support of their We Ate The Machine.

It’s been a whirlwind decade for Polysics, and there’s still so much to do. The quartet is bringing new wave back, breaking down musical barriers, and reviving dance-filled rock shows across the U.S. Sure, they may be speaking another language altogether, but with their undeniable energy and immense sound, nothing gets lost in translation.

Marianne Keith readying for tour with Glenn Tilbrook

Marianne Keith's fans may have to wait till early 2010 for the release of her new album Cathartic, but they can catch her pouring her heart out and sharing some of its emotionally compelling songs long before then as she embarks on a ten city solo acoustic tour October 12 with Glenn Tilbrook, lead singer of the famed UK rock band Squeeze, that hits cities on both coasts.

The Redlands, California born and raised performer (www.mariannekeith.com), who launched her career playing clubs and coffeehouses in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange Counties, will join Tilbrook for shows in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, L.A., Tucson, Austin, Houston, Dallas, New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia.

Capping a busy fall, on November 19, Marianne will find out if "Kiss Me In The Rain," one of the most popular and infectious tracks from her 2007 critically acclaimed Unison Music Group debut Beautiful Distraction, wins the Hollywood Music in Media Award (HMMA) it was recently nominated for. The HMMA, which takes place at the Highlands Nightclub, located in the Hollywood & Highland/Kodak Theater complex, honors the music of visual mediums, the talented individuals responsible for selecting it, and the music of artists, both mainstream and independent, from around the globe.

Since releasing her first album, the singer who likes to describe her vibe as "folk/pop/rock" has shown her wide ranging appeal on tours with established and upcoming artists in a wide range of genres, including blues/rocker Joe Bonamassa, alt-rockers Better Than Ezra, singer/songwriters Ari Hest and Julian Velard and folk/pop artist Brett Dennen.

She also toured with Noah Sugarman, another artist on Unison. The label, which is part of a full scale organization that includes a management and production company, was launched by industry veterans Bruce Witkin and Ryan Dorn, who have produced both of Marianne's albums. Unison's eclectic roster also includes British singer/songwriter Stephen Jones, a onetime member of the 90s band Baby Bird whose recordings will be released in the U.K,, and a jazz influenced, New York based singer/songwriter Bobby Syvarth.

While Beautiful Distraction established Marianne's credentials as a strong, emotionally raw and honest songwriter, Cathartic challenges her generally sunny point of view as she digs deep into the pain and heartache of a life changing, faith shaking relationship. The intense life experience she draws from transforms her from doe-eyed teen into a young adult woman who, emerging from her loss of innocence, truly comes of age as a composer.

"I went from thinking that people are generally good," she says, "that people have good hearts and come from a good place to realizing that's not necessarily true. I saw an ugly side of the world. I don't know if that crisis measures up to some of the ones that others have been through, but I'll never be quite the same. People think the title song is a metaphor about tearing out and burning a page from my diary, but I actually did that. It was a chapter I really wanted to forget. Heartbreak can affect your whole worldview. Where you might once have been carefree, now there's this sense of looking over your shoulder. If younger listeners don't know what the word cathartic means, they will after they listen to that song and the whole album."

True to her nature as a creative and career risk taker, Marianne defies some unspoken rules of album making with the new project. The album has 15 songs which, instead of being tracked strategically to mix up, down and mid-tempo songs, combine to tell her story in chronological order, cataloging this time in her life. Listeners are invited experience the entire cycle of emotions through her poetic, intelligent, yet accessible lyrics. Another unique element of Cathartic's development was the fact that the super-prolific songwriter actually wrote close to 100 songs for the project; Witkin and Dorn whittled them down to a final list to choose from by picking the ones whose lyrics would best tell the story.

"It's hard to pick a single aspect of my career that I love the most," Marianne says. "I really enjoy the recording process, developing a simple idea I started with in my bedroom into a full production. It's also so great to be out there performing, so much so that when I'm home for too long, I get restless. It's cool when people look at me and wonder how I can have such a big voice for such a little girl. I just tell them that this is what I'm made to do, and I'm grateful to have the opportunity to sing for them."

The Very Best coming to the Echoplex in support of new album

The Very Best’s—European production duo Radioclit and Malawian singer Esau Mwamwaya—debut full-length Warm Heart of Africa will be released October 6 on Green Owl. The much-anticipated album is already receiving critical acclaim here and in the U.K. GQ, SPIN, Rolling Stone, MOJO, The Guardian, among many others, have hailed The Very Best’s debut effort.

The band will return to the U.S. this fall for a national tour, including dates in New York City at Le Poisson Rouge on October 21 and Los Angeles at Echoplex on October 24 (please see below for complete confirmed dates). Autographed CD-and-ticket bundles will be available for purchase in advance of select shows.

Warm Heart of Africa follows the surprising global success of Esau Mwamwaya & Radioclit Are The Very Best, a free mixtape made available online late last year. Without promotional assistance or financial support, the collection of well-known pop, dance, afro and indie tracks remixed by Radioclit featuring Mwamwaya’s singing in Chichewa, Swahili, Portuguese and English charted more than 200,000 downloads and was hailed by tastemakers including Pitchfork, FADER, and Gorilla vs. Bear, among many others.

The Very Best is receiving critical acclaim for its high-energy live performances and forthcoming album in the wake of its first U.S. tour. In a “Best New Music” track review of the first single “Warm Heart of Africa,” which features Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig, Pitchfork describes Mwamwaya as “one of the most effortlessly lovable voices around.”

Rolling Stone jokes, in its four-star review of the song, which contains an ELO reference in one lyric, “Somewhere Jeff Lynne is confused but happy.” LA Weekly calls the band “one of the best antidotes for LA traffic frustration.” San Francisco Bay Guardian warns, “Brace yourself for hazardous dance floor anthems well-fed on the homegrown African sounds of high-life and marabi, as well as bass-laden pop grooves from, well, all over the globe.” And, following the band’s New York City concert, GQ.com says, “We’re curious to see if the folks who swoon for Vampire Weekend’s Graceland-y rock and M.I.A’s revolution party beats will be ready to follow the music to its logical next step. We are.” The Very Best embodies a without-borders approach to music-making that could only happen in the 21st century.

Green Owl is a New York City-based record label started by artists for artists with the idea that great music can be sustainable—both economically and environmentally. Green Owl is committed to respecting this planet through sustainable technology, news and information. Please visit www.greenowl.com for more information.

Chris Smither on tour in support of new album

Four decades of music mastery and songwriting craft come together on Chris Smither's latest collection, Time Stands Still - a gripping mix of originals and potent covers. The new collection comes out September 29th on Signature Sounds/Mighty Albert.

Time Stands Still puts the exclamation point on a legendary career that shows no signs of slowing down. On the contrary, this blues and folk superstar continues to build creative momentum. His latest effort features a slew of tunes stripped down to their essence, shining the spotlight on Smither's understated power as a songwriter-one who taps into emotions at their most elemental and powerful core. It's a reminder why artists as diverse as Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris and Diana Krall have mined Smither's catalog in the past.

He's teamed with producer and guitarist David "Goody" Goodrich and drummer Zak Trojano to create a simple, yet emotionally powerful musical landscape upon which to paint his blues and folk-fueled narratives. As always, Smither's signature finger-picking style mixes with his whiskey-meets-honey vocals to deliver intensely honest meditations on life, love and loss.

Smither's latest studio album was recorded in just three days and captures the vibrant urgency and immediacy of his live shows. It features eight original compositions as well as covers from Bob Dylan, Mark Knopfler, and 1920s country-blues songster Frank Hutchison.

Equal parts existential inquisitor and day-to-day chronicler, Smither has an innate ability to imbibe songs dealing with contemporary issues with a timeless quality. Whether playfully dealing with parenthood on "I Don't Know" or acting the seducer on "Don't Call Me Stranger," the brokenness of the blues is never far away. Every song is seeped in emotion, burnished with wisdom of hard-fought knowledge. Like the master craftsman he is, Smither always marries the right melody with thought-provoking, heart-and-soul rending lyrics. Nowhere is that more evident than on the soulful title track. Building on a toe-tapping beat, Smither's voice plaintively sings "I kissed her twice at the speed of light and time stood still," perfectly capturing and immortalizing one of the small moments that gives so much meaning in life.

Like all great blues and folk masters, Smither doesn't wallow in the darkness. Rather he illuminates it, and the songs on Time Stands Still shine a light on the intricacies of the human condition. His insights and creativity are also finding new outlets. He recently contributed a short story for the new book, Amplified (Melville House), a collection of 16 stories by some of today's most compelling performing songwriter. His story, "Leroy Purcell" kicks off the collection.

Burgeoning literary powerhouse, distinctive guitarist, captivating storyteller and song poet-there's no end to Chris Smither's creative talents. He's got so much going on, don't be surprised if his latest collection of music makes Time Stands Still.

Here We Go Magic Sign With Secretly Canadian
Look Out For Sophomore Record Spring 2010

It's been a big year for Here We Go Magic following the release of their much celebrated self-titled debut (Western Vinyl), and now they have their sights firmly set on 2010 with a new album, a new record label, and an ever expanding sound. Having just signed to Secretly Canadian, the band is targeting Spring of 2010 to release their highly anticipated follow-up to 2009's breakthrough record.

The band have spent much of the year on the road touring with indie giants including Grizzly Bear and are currently supporting The Walkmen before playing Austin City Limits.

Here We Go Magic are also hard at work recording the self-produced sophomore album in a house they've commandeered in upstate New York, and while the first record was the result of Luke Temple getting creative in his bedroom, this release is a fully fledged team effort.

With an eye towards 2010 the band is looking forward to expanding their audience as their unique sound continues to permeate throughout the indie world.

"This is a diverse and super funky mix of tropicalia, electro, acid jazz and bubblegum pop with a surprise at every turn. From the vocodered disco-rock of Let's Boogie to the sun-drenched acoustica of Mireia there isn't a moment here that doesn't ooze laid-back Mediterranean cool." - Clash Magazine

Spanning multiple genres and featuring collaborations from some of the most inspiring artists in the world, Variety Lab’s sophomore album Team Up! is set up to be the most wonderful musical surprise of 2009. From the original blueprints through to the execution it’s a grand slam. Collaborations with folk legend Donovan, David Bartholomé, Lisa Kekaula, Yael Naim and Lily Frost creates a broad musical spectrum while French comic artists Dupuy & Berberian bring Variety Lab’s vision to life.

Variety Lab is the alias of one Thierry Bellia. His first CD – 2003’s Providence – gained notoriety for its lead single “London In The Rain,” which was, at the time, included in every single lounge compilation. As in the past Bellia, alone, put Team Up! together, but he did not forget to emphasize his friends’ assistance in the process. Let’s just name his henchmen from the French band Orwell (Jérôme Didelot and Alexandre Longo, aka Cascadeur and winner of the 2008 Inrockuptibles CQFD prize). Making use of his friends, instruments, machines and other weird objects (for instance the Optigan, a toy devised back in the 70’s), Thierry has worked non-stop on this project.

As for the biggest collaboration, after months of swapping tapes across the channel with Bellia, folk legend Donovan himself flew across to Paris to offer his voice and his experience to the spacious and bouncy opening track, “Is This The Last Time.” "I was delighted to be asked to join Variety Lab on their project. I flew into Paris to record. I helped to re-work the song and had great fun with the band. It's a cool track and I am pleased to present this first single with Variety Lab. It's a funny lyric and I brought out the humor with one of my quirky accents that I use when I take on the character in a song. It's a perfect new pop record to dance and meet a new friend or lover," Donovan says.

On three other tracks, “We Should Be Dancing” (the video has now been viewed over 125,000 time on YouTube), “Mireia” and the very rocky “Not Enough,” it is David Bartholomé, the lead-singer with the excellent Belgian band Sharko, who grabs the mike. And then the fantastic and frantic Bellrays’ vocalist, Lisa Kekaula, with her husky and roaring voice who sings on “Let’s Boogie,” a groovy and vocodered track that oozes sheer rock and soul energy from Detroit.

The youngster Vincent Mougel from Kidsaredead comes in next to blow some sugary foam on the sweet candy that is “Soda Pop Confusion,” while Thierry’s fellow Nancy-born Mona Soyoc naturally joins the project as a next-door neighbor, and adds some sensuality to the very eighties “Money,” a cover version of the track by late 70s-early 80s English band The Flying Lizards, who had themselves borrowed it from the soul crooner Barrett Strong.

Next, Canadian songstress Lily Frost croons over the lush, crackly ballad “This Parade” before 2008 pop sensation Yael Naim closes the album with her version of “Love Is A Bird;” originally a Variety Lab demo that has gradually evolved, first in the expert hands of Cascadeur, then by David Bartholomé on a Sharko album. “Love Is A Bird”, a simple, and beautiful idea, that leads us strolling from one end of Team up! to the other, filled with a feeling that can be summed up as the more, the stronger, the prettier and the merrier.

Team up! is more than a mere album - Much more. It is like awaking from a soft dream.

John Mayer to release new album

John Mayer's Battle Studies will be released on November 17th, 2009 on Columbia Records. The seven-time Grammy Award winner's fourth studio album was co-produced by John Mayer and Steve Jordan and debuts three years after his critically acclaimed 2006 album, Continuum.

Incorporating the warmth, melodies and simplicity of 70's and 80's California rock/pop, Battle Studies is a confessional, relaxed and liberated album recorded in a private home in California where Mayer lived and worked over the course of six months before wrapping at the famed Capitol Studios in Los Angeles.

The album's first single, "Who Says" challenges conventional standards of what one can accomplish or undertake - despite society's constraints. Battle Studies also showcases universal themes on "Heartbreak Warfare," "Assassin," and "War of My Life," while flexing guitar chops on "Rock Song," and a reinterpretation of "Crossroads." The famously collaborative guitar player also invited one of music's brightest new talents, Taylor Swift, to appear on "Half of My Heart."

"I approach music like a director doing a period piece," says Mayer. "Where Continuum was R&B and Soul, Battle Studies was written with the timelessness of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac and Neil Young in mind. The melodies and message are concise and from-the-gut with the efficiency of simplicity."

A John Mayer North American tour is currently being planned and will follow the release of Battle Studies in early 2010, details to be announced soon. In the meantime, two rare performances by John Mayer Trio (John Mayer, Steve Jordan, Pino Palladino) have been announced for December – December 29th in San Diego at the Copley Symphony Hall and a New Year’s Eve show on December 31st in Las Vegas at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

In place of Mayer’s annual Holiday Revue, these concert events will raise money for two veteran’s charities – Military Outreach Ministry Camp Pendleton (MOM) and NCIRE – the Veterans Health Research Institute. MOM is a nonprofit organization that supports young military families of all faiths and NCIRE is the largest non-profit research institute affiliated with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Among other investigations, NCIRE researches the causes and best treatment for post- traumatic stress disorder and other combat-related injuries.

ABOUT JOHN MAYER - The consistency with which John Mayer combines wordcraft and melody has earned him rarefied status in popular culture as a genuine and respected songwriter and musician. Since his acclaimed debut in 2001 with Room For Squares, each release has earned John Mayer additional accolades. Through 2003's Heavier Things, his work with John Mayer Trio in 2005, CONTINUUM's 2006 release and now, Battle Studies, John Mayer has established himself as a musician and collaborator who exceeds genre boundaries.

The guitarist, vocalist and songwriter has earned seven Grammy Awards and sold nearly 12.5 million albums worldwide. In May 2007, Time Magazine placed John Mayer on their Time 100 list of the most influential contemporary thinkers, leaders, artists and entertainers. For two consecutive years, Rolling Stone Magazine featured John Mayer on the cover of their annual "Guitar" issue - first with the May 2008 "Living Guitar Legends" issue and then as part of February 2007's "Guitar Heroes" round-ups featuring Mayer with peers and icons alike.

Pairings with a range of artists are a defining trait of the musician whose collaborative streak is well-known. From rock to blues, hip-hop to jazz to country, Mayer has performed and/or recorded with Eric Clapton, BB King, Buddy Guy, T-Bone Burnett, Herbie Hancock, Dixie Chicks, Jay Z, Alicia Keys and Taylor Swift. In 2005, Mayer famously toured and recorded with power players Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan as John Mayer Trio, whose live album TRY! featured searing blues and rock. As on Continuum, John Mayer again took the helm as the co-producer of Battle Studies, his fourth studio album, which will be released November, 17, 2009.

Richy Petrello is back to music and helping others

This isn’t a PR stunt or a reality show, this is as real as it gets - this is human truth. It’s one hell of a story.

Born and raised on Long Island, Richy Petrello has seen his career come full circle; complete with a meteoric upswing and a tumbling downfall, only to rise from the ashes like a Phoenix. If you knew Richy back in the day, he was a fierce Sax cat - the man was a Rock and roll terrorist, terrorizing his own body with alcohol and drugs, waking up in his own vomit.

Richy lived this cliché of sex, drugs and rock and roll for many years; getting caught up in the ebbs and flows and eventually succumbing to the temptations and the perks that came with living the rock star life. Then, as if by some divine intervention, like a flash of light coming down from heaven, he meets and falls in love with Cathe, like an angel she transformed him into a Rock And Roll Humanitarian.

For a short period of time afterwards, he turned away from his music; believing that the entertainment business and everything associated with it was to blame for his rapid descent into drugs and depression. But after some reflection on this, he realized his music was not the key to his downfall, but instead was the thing that would ultimately save him. Since that fateful moment of clarity, he has successfully used music to reach out to others, helping them to not fall into the same trap he fell into, and at the same time to bring joy to people across the globe.

Today this former rock star is on top of the world in many ways; first and foremost as a proud father who has instilled music and generosity into his three young daughters, who now make up the current buzz band, Petrel. Ages 17-23, the girls offer a pop sound that is refreshing and unique. These young Pop Humanitarians bring their uplifting brand of music to the far reaches of the world with the hope of touching those who have been under served and ignored; and they don't need a song with pseudo-controversy like Katy Perry’s I kissed a girl; they have actually kissed AIDS babies!

With this ethos in mind, the family, Richy and Cathe Petrello with their daughters Jessica, Rebekah and Destiny (Petrel) has spent the past several years travelling to remote villages in Haiti, Jamaica, Cuba and Mexico, to the Mayan Jungle, to orphanages in India, China, Belize, Guatemala and to places such as the Metro Church Children’s Outreach' in Bushwick, Brooklyn - reaching out to these diverse communities by preparing food, playing with the kids, and teaching them songs. He's not like some Bono writing a check to save the rain forest. This guy brings his horn to the mud and blood of Haiti, into the Mayan Jungle and to other god forsaken places.

Conductor Ennio Morricone to debut new piece at Hollywood Bowl

When Ennio Morricone makes his Hollywood Bowl debut entitled Once Upon a Time in Hollywood on Sunday October 25, 2009 conducting the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the world-renowned composer will also debut a new piece he commissioned specifically to commemorate the event.

Andrea Morricone (http://www.andreamorricone.it), son of Ennio Morricone has composed “Adesso For Strings”, a six-minute piece that will be among many scores from the elder Morricone’s performance at the Hollywood Bowl. This rare live event is the first live familial musical collaboration between the Morricones. Their professional career began in 1988 when both their music appeared in the classic film Cinema Paradiso. Andrea Morricone wrote “Love Theme” for Cinema Paradiso for which he won England’s BAFTA award while Ennio Morricone scored the film.

“For anyone to have the opportunity to score a piece of music commissioned by Ennio Morricone is obviously an honor and unique pleasure,” said Composer Andrea Morricone. “What makes this special for me is that my father has never conducted in Los Angeles, the home of American film, and it is truly an honor just being a part of this historic event. We first were able to collaborate together on the film Cinema Paradiso more than twenty years ago. It will be a thrill for both of us to hear my music conducted by my father for the very first time next month.”

Andrea Morricone is one of Italy’s most prominent composers and has become an established global presence in film and concert music. His film soundtracks include the Oscar-nominated and 2003 Sundance Festival winning documentary Capturing The Friedman’s, Barry Levinson’s Liberty Heights, as well as Here on Earth, Due Amici, Raul, Funny Money, The Inquiry, and the documentaries Brando and Huxley on Huxley.

Andrea Morricone began his musical studies under the guidance of his father, the composer Ennio Morricone, who won an Honorary Academy Awarded in 2007. Â Andrea received a Baccalaureate and Master's degrees in composition from Rome’s Accademia di Santa Cecilia. He was awarded a diploma in conducting as a student of Bruno Aprea; Orchestras he has conducted include the Orchestra Roma Sinfonietta, Milan’s Guido Cantelli Orchestra, Bulgaria’s Symphony Orchestra of Sofia, Hungary’s Budapest Opera Orchestra and Chorus, Spain’s Bilbao Symphony and Orchestra, and The Czech National Symphony Orchestra (CNSO) Rep. Ceca, Youth Symphonic Orchestra Simon Boliva (Venezuela). Exceptional moments in Andrea's career include: conducting Yo-Yo Ma and the USC Thornton Chamber Orchestra, winning the Globo D'Oro in 2005 awarded by the Association of International Press and having contemporary pop artist Sting record one of his songs.

While still working part-time in Rome, Andrea Morricone and his wife, actress Alessia Albani, moved to Los Angeles, California in 2003. He has moved into a production suite at the world famous Village Recorder in West Los Angeles where he composes music.

Guitarist Omar Rodriguez Lopez to release new album

Renown guitarist and musical mastermind Omar Rodriguez Lopez is set to release perhaps his most melodic and revealing album to date worldwide on November 10th, 2009 via his own Rodriguez Lopez Productions, with European release on September 28th. The disc, titled Xenophanes is the first to feature lead vocals from the Grammy-winning guitar legend -- and we don't use the word "legend" lightly, Rolling Stone hails him among their "Greatest Guitarists of All Time", placing him on that issue's cover. Check out the first MP3, "Mundo De Ciegos"

Wikipedia tells us that Xenophanes was a Greek philosopher, poet, and social and religious critic of the 5th century BC. His pantheistic conception of the Universe supposed that everything in existence has always existed. He rejected his contemporaries' notions of an anthropomorphic "god" (or hierarchy of gods) in favor of a concept not the least bit irrelevant to our 21st century mindset, that of a singular (and hence, all-encompassing) global consciousness.

His unorthodox concepts were not widely acknowledged until many hundreds of years after his death, and suffice to say, their material concerns are primarily those which humans wage war over two-and-a-half millennia later. Little surprise, then, that this iconoclastic anomaly of a man should lend his name to a new concept album by The Mars Volta's hyper-prolific mastermind, Omar Rodriguez Lopez.

The inaugural recording from Rodriguez Lopez's low-profile compound in Zapopan, Mexico, Xenophanes is the first album which finds him at the helm vocally and lyrically, as well as musically. Sung entirely in Spanish, Xenophanes showcases a side of Omar rarely seen before, allowing for a much more gestural experience of the man rather than simply the musician, and truly distinguishing this album from its myriad predecessors.

Equal parts Volta bombast, El Grupo Nuevo... technicality, and a textural richness unequaled on prior solo releases, Xenophanes is a triumph of imagination and an inspired, concise statement. A conceptual journey through life, death, and re-birth, the album tells the story of a selfish and judgmental female caseworker who falls in love with a male client, only for him to die soon thereafter. Over the course of eleven subsequent lifetimes, the woman experiences life from every conceivable vantage point as her soul evolves, thereby allowing the maturity and eventual letting-go of her ego which in turn enables the realization that the man was, and always has been, her father spirit.

Suggesting the fractal and holographic nature of both consciousness and physical reality, the concepts embraced on Xenophanes will appear at least vaguely familiar to anyone with experience in the psychedelic and/or shamanic realms; concepts which Xenophanes himself was likely the first to express within the confines of Western philosophy.

In order to execute the unpredictable, emotionally-charged compositions on Xenophanes, Rodriguez Lopez once again enlists his veteran co-conspirators: bassist Juan Alderete de la Peña, drummer Thomas Pridgen and keyboardist/percussionist Marcel Rodriguez Lopez. Additionally, the album includes contributions from Mark Aanderud (additional keyboards), as well as the notable voice of Ximena Sariñana, doubling and backing Rodriguez Lopez's vocals.

As Sariñana's presence on Omar's recordings and during live performances has already been a cause for much speculation, it should be made clear that Xenophanes does not feature the accomplished and versatile singer's own vocal compostions.

Subsequent releases (the forthcoming Los Suenos De Un Hidago and Ciencia De Los Inutiles albums, for instance) will fully showcase Sariñana's penchant for infectious melody and engaging lyrics.

ABLAYE CISSOKO & VOLKER GOETZE
live!!
Today’s cross-cultural fusions often transcend both geography and genre, and whether it was fate or design that brought together Ablaye Cissoko and Volker Goetze, it is the listener who ultimately benefits. Despite any cultural barriers that separated them, Cissoko, the Senegalese griot singer and traditional West African 21-stringed kora player, and Goetze, the German-born, New York-based trumpeter discovered they had much in common, both musically and personally. Their commonalitiescan be heard on Sira, which is an album that reaffirms the maxim that music is the universal language. They appear tonight as part of their first USA tour together.

#2 Album, CMJ World Music Chart
"5 stars! Their serene dialogue, inspired by tradition and inventing a new vocabulary at the same time, is both thrilling and soothing." Mondomix France

"Cross-cultural fusion at its most sublime; Cissoko's keening vocals and cascading kora underpin much of the album, with Goetze weaving delicate yet sturdy lines (on trumpet) when inspiration strikes and Cissoko responding in kind...Delightful, mysterious, and indeed, ground breaking." - Jazzwise UK

About Women Rock For The Cure
WRFTC was founded in 2007 by four friends with ties to the music industry: Jensen Sussman, Liz Lee Schullo, Rebekah Lee Beard and Tara Austin who all met through the Society of Leaders in Development (SOLID), an organization for young music business professionals. With the support of SOLID, the girls set out to organize an all-female, writer-in-the round benefit concert – later called Women Rock For The Cure – to help raise awareness and funds for SOLID’s Race For The Cure team. Since then, WRFTC has worked to support the Greater Nashville affiliate of Susan G. Komen For The Cure®, raising money and increasing breast cancer awareness locally. After two amazing years of standing-room-only concerts, the founders decided to make WRFTC a non-profit organization. With the group’s new status, WRFTC is pinker than ever and always rockin’ to reach the organization’s vision; WRFTC is committed to fighting breast cancer by utilizing the passion, creativity and strength of the entertainment industry to find inspiring ways to raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Greater Nashville, as well as creating awareness programs for men and women of all ages. For more information, visit www.womenrockforthecure.org.

Dierks Bentley and CMT offering free song download to benefit Children's Miracle Network

In celebration of his partnership with CMT ONE COUNTRY, multi-platinum recording singer/songwriter Dierks Bentley is offering a free download of the inspirational “Beautiful World” featuring Patty Griffin on CMT.com beginning today. Bentley is offering this free download to fans to raise awareness about his nationwide “Miles & Music For Kids” fundraiser, which is sponsored by CMT ONE COUNTRY and benefits local hospitals in the Children’s Miracle Network.

”This is definitely one of my favorite songs, not just from the last album, but probably that I’ve ever written and recorded,” explains Bentley. “The whole premise is that if you watch the news or read the headlines, there is a lot of really negative stuff happening out there that can pull you down, but if you choose to follow the good and believe in something better, then it is a ‘Beautiful World.’”

The free download of Bentley’s “Beautiful World” is available here:
http://www.cmt.com/one_country/partners/childrens-miracle-network/miles-and-music.jhtml

Bentley’s “Miles & Music For Kids” fundraiser is expanding to six markets, with events taking place in Nashville, Tenn.; Bentley’s hometown of Phoenix, Ariz.; Seattle, Wa.; Atlanta, Ga.; Dallas, Texas and Chicago, Ill. in 2009 and 2010; all proceeds from these events will benefit Children’s Miracle Network hospitals in those areas.

This year’s kick off event will be held at Nashville’s Riverfront Park on Sunday, October 11 and will feature performances by Bentley and Capitol Nashville label-mates Darius Rucker and Eric Church along with Wynonna, Heidi Newfield and Michelle Branch. The Nashville event will once again benefit the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, a Children's Miracle Network hospital.

Paramore's new tunes now on MTV Unplugged site

Paramore fans eagerly awaiting the release of their 3rd album, “Brand New Eyes,” coming out tomorrow, can check out a raw, stripped-down musical performance from the power-pop-punk fivesome as they make their MTV Unplugged debut today.

Fans can tune-in to the MTV Unplugged site (unplugged.mtv.com) to catch exclusive performances off the new album (listed below), watch interviews and check out behind-the-scenes photos of the session. Clips of the performance will also be featured on-air in MTV’s AMTV music block all week.

Unplugged, which made its digital comeback this summer featuring songstress Adele, indie rockers Silversun Pickups and Baltimore pop-punk band All Time Low, will feature an upcoming performance later this fall by Katie Perry.

Mark Stuart and the Bastard Sons to tour in support of new album

Mark Stuart and The Bastard Sons are kicking it into gear for the fall, with the release this week of the band's brand new CD Bend In The Road, and a tour that begins with a free performance on Friday October 2 for the troops, personnel and visitors to the Air Show at Miramar Marine Corps base in San Diego.

The annual event draws more than half a million spectators over three days. The band performs at the Legends Sports Bar (on a special outdoor stage) at 7 pm. The show is open to the public.

Mark Stuart, the voice and vision of acclaimed alt-country/roots rock outfit Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash is leading the way with his new group Mark Stuart and The Bastard Sons. The Lincoln Journal Star called Bend In The Road "...the best country record...this year," while national music magazine Blurt, said, "Stuart exhibits the grit and the spit to keep the act convincing, and with rousing, rollicking barnburners like "Restless Ramblin' Man," "When Love Comes A Callin'" and "Gone Like a Raven" providing the fodder, their unflinching blue collar credo gets full venting."

Fans can expect no less from the live show, a toe-tapping, boot-scootin' affair that burns up the road with a high-octane groove in the spirit of Country Outlaws Willie, Waylon, Merle, and the Man in Black. A recent live review in the Santa Barbara News Press commented: "Bands like [Mark Stuart and The Bastard Sons] are the reason country music is still vital...The group takes a classic sound, writes great original songs and plays the hell out of them."

Deastro to tour in support of new album

Deastro Plays LOS ANGELES At The Echo on 11.24 With Max Tundra
Release "Tone Adventure #3" Single And
"Greens, Grays And Nordics (I Am Robot And Proud Remix)"
"Moondagger" Out NOW On Ghostly International

The title of Deastro's "Tone Adventure #3" may evoke a "working title"-like looseness--why name a song when you can simply number it?--but the track itself is one of Moondagger's tightest. "Tone Adventure #3" is an archetypal Deastro song, as Randolph Chabot sprints through catchy, melodic passages with maniacal conviction, howling about feet being "strapped to cannon balls" from behind a wall of computer-generated atmosphere.

In keeping with its title, "Tone Adventure #3" is more psychedelic than much of Moondagger, warping its instruments into unrecognizable, mutant sound-entities. Glockenspiels, spy-movie guitars, orchestral stabs, and alien ray guns all make appearances--as they should in any good adventure.

On "Tone Adventure #3"'s B-side, Toronto electro producer I Am Robot And Proud remixes Moondagger's "Greens, Grays, and Nordics" into a joyous, MIDI-fueled daydream. The song's previously sinister tone gets the lo-fi electronics treatment from the Robot's gleeful presets--the re-harmonized final chorus alone is worth the price of admission.

Randolph Chabot has been making albums since he was 12 years old -- now, at 22, the Detroit-based musician known as Deastro is ready for his close-up. "Vermillion Plaza" the second single from Deastro's upcoming full-length debut Moondagger, miniaturizes the album's best assets and shoots them out of a cannon. Plucky synth arpeggios, end-of-the-world choruses, joyously careening melody lines--it's all there, squashed into a life-affirming three minutes and 50 seconds. When Chabot pleads for contact, singing, "Would you be my son / 'cause all of mine have died?," it's less a cry of self-pity than an exhilarating salute to the power of human connection.

Recently, Chicago-based photographer/videographer James P. Morse--a longtime friend and collaborator of Ghostly's--followed Chabot around Detroit for a day and edited the footage into "Ghostly Presents: Deastro," a video profile whose warm, colorful aesthetic matches Chabot's energy and positivity to a T. Chabot putters around his Detroit home, visits his favorite bookstore, gushes about Isaac Asimov and Simone de Beauvoir, and plays a sweaty, packed show with his band. It's a loving portrait of an artist who stays true to his beliefs, staying passionate, engaged, and creative in all of his endeavors.Deastro's full-band debut, Moondagger, arrived on June 23rd, on Ghostly International.
