Youth Brigade music and book set available

Although adults tend to pair up "punk music" with the "When are you going to grow up" question, parents and kids alike are going to get schooled, DIY-style, this holiday season.

Celebrating its 25th year making punk music not only relevant but consistently exciting as well, seminal Southern California punk label BYO Records (Better Youth Organization) unleashes LET THEM KNOW: THE STORY OF YOUTH BRIGADE AND BYO RECORDS to retail today (September 22, 2009). The comprehensive box set includes a 31-track double LP (on red vinyl), a 90 minute hilarious yet intelligent documentary on the history and importance of the ground-breaking band Youth Brigade and the BYO label, and a full-color, hardcover bound book containing photos and essays from voices within the SoCal punk community. (The set is also available as a CD/DVD package with booklet, and the music available at digital retailers as well).

Among the many iconic punk bands asked to cover their favorite song from the extensive BYO Records catalog include Leatherface, Matt Skiba, The Briefs, 7 Seconds, Subhumans, NOFX, Bouncing Souls, Dropkick Murphys, Pennywise, and Anti-Flag.

In celebration of the release of Let Them Know, Youth Brigade will tour extensively through the Fall and into 2010, performing with old friends and labelmates, including a run of dates with The Bouncing Souls beginning September 23rd. In addition, the documentary will be screened in numerous cities across the country, sometimes coinciding with Youth Brigade shows, creating the perfect opportunity to learn about the label and then see the band live who created it all. (tour dates below)

Formed in 1982 by Mark and Shawn Stern of the band Youth Brigade, BYO started out as an outgrowth of their legendary LA club Godzilla's and quickly evolved into not only a DIY record label but a tightly-knit community for many in the SoCal punk scene. BYO's debut release, Someone Got Their Head Kicked In, captured the energy coming out of the creative and dynamic minds in that world and included early songs from Bad Religion, Social Distortion, SNFU and Adolescents.

Like many things they’ve accomplished, the release of Let Them Know marks something that has seemingly come natural for them, but has never been done before. Youth Brigade have again managed to gather friends, partners, and peers from the last three decades to create this project as a community as only BYO and Youth Brigade can.

Participants range from band members of some of the greatest punk bands on the planet to booking agents, label owners, fans, writers and others intimately familiar with what actually happened throughout the years. It’s through their voices that the documentary movie recalls the band and label’s over 25 years of trailblazing the southern California punk rock landscape.

Written submissions and rare never-before-seen photos were compiled to narrate the story within a book and finally, a return to the roots of what started their record label back in ’82, a classic punk rock compilation record showcasing the effect and inspiration that BYO has helped foster for all these years!
