FuseTar Lucifer, new 16-string instrument, created

FuseTar "Lucifer" is a triple-necked, 16-stringed, extraordinary new hand-made music instrument, created by Iranian multi-instrumentalist Shahab Tolouie (http://www.Shahab-Tolouie.com ) around an ambitiously broad concept that in enabling connections between world musicalities, encompasses both aural and cultural traditions.

Approximately two years ago, Shahab Tolouie began the realization of his long-term idea to gather the diverse strands of Persian, jazz and flamenco together in a manner that incorporates modern technologies in one instrument to attain the precise timbres that are optimal for live
performance of his original style - Persian-flamenco fusion.

The name is derived from "fuse" - English for "fusion" and "tar" - Farsi for "strings," hence "fusion of strings." The nickname Lucifer is that of the mythological morning star, the bearer of light.

It took a year and half for two luthiers, Mehr & Owrang (Crimson Oath), to build the FuseTar. It is made of thirteen different types of wood and weighs 2.1 kg. With an acoustic chamber approximately 2cm larger than that on a regular guitar, the FuseTar possesses three necks. The uppermost is a fretless neck, which makes possible to play the quarter-tones peculiar to eastern music. The middle neck is the "guitar neck," a combination flamenco/jazz guitar configured with the "true temperament" fretting technology, which produces more accurate intonations and longer sustain than a normal guitar and is used, for example, by John McLaughlin and Steve Vai. The third neck is a Persian "setar neck" with four strings fretted for quarter-tones, a traditional instrument whose roots stretch back 2,000 years. This is the first time a traditional Persian instrument has been modernized with the fixed, "true temperament" fretting system.

At the same time FuseTar is a unique work of art - carefully decorated by elements from three of the most significant historical periods of the Persian Empire (Achaemenid: the Lion-griffin - a protector from evil; Parthian & Sassanid: Derafsh Kaviani - symbol of independence and freedom; Lion and Sun - which have always been associated with Persian royalty) ... and Faravahar - the best-known symbol of Zoroastrianism.

'The Stars of Beatlemania!' in North Hollywood opens June 30

Billed as 'the #1 National Touring Show in America Celebrating the Music of the Beatles,' the theatrical production of 'The Stars of Beatlemania! ' will be presented at North Hollywood's historic El Portal Theatre for a one-week only limited engagement starting June 30.

The musical revival, starring members of the original Broadway production, is the story of the Beatlemania phenomenon as told through the music that influenced generations of music lovers and musicians.

"''The Stars of Beatlemania!' chronicles the musical history of the Beatles through live recreations of their electrifying stage shows,”relates Alan LeBouf, one of the original cast members who plays Paul McCartney in the revival tour.

"From their explosive debut on the Ed Sullivan Show and their meteoric ascent to the 'Top of the Pops' through the colorful Sergeant Pepper era and beyond - this is the dramatic story of how The Beatles transcended their own myth and crafted a musical legacy that continues to inspire and captivate the world's imagination," LeBouf says.

Theatrical presentations of Beatles shows shows have existed since 1969, but few have equaled the success of the 'Beatlemania!' Broadway musical. Originally conceived and produced by Steve Leber and David Krebs, 'Beatlemania' began previews on May 26, 1977 in Boston.

'Beatlemania!' premiered on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theatre on May 31, 1977, (after previewing from May 26) and ran until October 17, 1979, for a total of 1006 performances. During its New York run, the show moved to the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre and finally the Palace Theatre. The production was nominated for the 1978 Tony Award for Best Lighting Design by designer Jules Fisher.

"For this tour, we've updated the show and made it more appealing and relevant to today's modern audiences," reveals David Leon, who starred in the Broadway and motion picture production of 'Beatlemania' as John Lennon, "Through authentic costume changes and live musical performance and singing, plus powerful multimedia technology, we catapult the audience back into time to faithfully recapture the music and magic of the world's most influential pop music icons."

Leon, who has also starred in "Rain," has played keyboards for major acts Hermann's Hermits, Mitch Ryder, Badfinger, Dion, and Three Dog Night, is excited about the El Portal Theatre limited engagement.

"We're looking forward to returning to the Los Angeles market, where the Beatles once made their home, and played their legendary Hollywood Bowl concerts, " LeBouf says, "Theatre audiences there are very appreciative of Beatles music, and this presentation is top-notch."

The Henry Clay People to tour in support of upcoming album

With an enthralling live show that has won over countless fans and critics, Los Angeles quartet The Henry Clay People are thrilled to hit the road this summer in support of their upcoming album Twenty-Five for the Rest of Our Lives.

The five-week tour beginning June 14th will see the band share the stage with Motion City Soundtrack, These United States and Futurebirds, along with their own headlining dates.

Set for a June 26th release on TBD Records, Twenty-Five for the Rest of Our Lives is a thrilling and sweaty thirty minutes of teenage restlessness. Evident in new songs "Hide" and "Friends Are Forgiving" - two of the twelve songs that make Twenty-Five for the Rest of Our Lives the bands most urgent, bratty, and melancholic record to date.

Spin Magazine raves "The Henry Clay People specialize in raggedy power chords and desperately boyish vocals - what Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers would sound like if they'd taken temp work and listened obsessively to Crazy Horse."

They Might Be Giants' 'No' to be re-issued

The career of Brooklyn’s beloved They Might Be Giants has been a series of unexpected turns, but the release of their first family album No! in 2002 might have been the most celebrated turn of all. Not only did it set in motion what would become hugely successful second career for the band, the band would become role models for other acts, ushering in a new creative era in kid’s music.

To celebrate the album’s 10 year anniversary, Idlewild Recordings is creating a special re-issue of the album with seven bonus tracks. New tracks include a new studio version of Alphabet of Nations and a mind-bending live version of Robot Parade. Check out the MP3 for “Clap Your Hands” where it premiered with AV Club.

Following the critical and audience raves for No!, They Might Be Giants joined forces with Disney Sound for their “Here Comes” CD and DVD series. 2005’s Here Come The ABCs was named “the year's best children's album” by Amazon.com, while the accompanying DVD was certified gold. Both sequels received GRAMMY nominations, with 2008’s Here Come The 123s earning the band their second GRAMMY award, for “Best Children’s Album.” With four home-run kid’s releases under their belt, They Might Be Giants special, and inevitably sold out, family shows have become extraordinary happenings; truly redefining the all-ages rock show at the most unlikely venues including The Museum of Natural History, the Hall of Science, The Kennedy Center and Royce Hall.

Be sure to grab the special No! re-issue, and stay tuned for more from TMBG coming soon!

Brendan Rivera to release album

On June 12 New York native and singer-songwriter BRENDAN RIVERA will release his latest LP No Ocean In Ireland via CT-based Veggie Co. Records.

The Brooklyn-based Rivera penned and recorded his first full album, The Musician with his longtime friend turned producer Mike Kalajian in 2008. The collective, Looking Glass Wars was formed, and they began playing The Musician at clubs throughout NYC. Looking Glass Wars would go on to play east coast shows and tours with the likes of Anthony Green, Silverstein, The Starting Line and more. The band collectively wrote and released an EP titled a Place in a Parlor before disbanding shortly after.

Not being able, or willing to slow his creative process, Rivera immediately continued writing songs for what would become his Veggie Co. Records debut, Body of Land. The album resonated with friend and vocalist Shane Told of Silverstein, and was released in Canada on Shane’s personal label, Verona Records. BRENDAN RIVERA armed with only his acoustic guitar embarked on a 2009 Fall Tour with Silverstein and A Day to Remember headlining the shows. Rivera was honored in 2008 with Looking Glass Wars and again in 2009 for Body of Land, as one of the artists featured on Absolutepunk.net’s “Absolute 100” list of up and coming artists.

In late 2010, BRENDAN RIVERA entered the studio yet again with producers Mike Kalajian and Gregory Dunn of Moving Mountains to record No Ocean in Ireland. The album features 11 songs that Rivera describes as “Irish-Americana Indie Rock.” The album showcases Rivera’s ability to pull from all of his varied influences and still create a cohesive album that is steeped in originality.

No Ocean In Ireland kicks off in high gear with fast paced rock songs such as the title track and “Hole in the Curtain”. BRENDAN RIVERA slows things down a few times throughout the record with songs like “Strangers” and “New Tattoo” which highlight Rivera’s keen ability to tell a story using just his voice and acoustic guitar.

The LP truly reaches its pinnacle with the final two songs, “Kingdom” and “Sands of Ours” respectively. The latter closes the album and features piano parts from The Starting Line’s Brian Schmutz. You can hear the resolve in Rivera’s voice as he sings, “I’m not giving up, or giving in, because I’ve been waiting too long.”

No Ocean in Ireland will be released June 12, 2012 on Veggie Co. Records. The record will be available on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and other digital retailers as well as for sale on vinyl format from the Brendan Rivera webstore.

Tune in to The Discovery Channel’s new hit motorcycle club series, ‘The Devil’s Ride’, next week for ATTIKA 7’s world premiere of select tracks appearing on the band’s upcoming full-length album, Blood Of My Enemies. The episode, featuring a previously recorded live performance with exclusive, never-before-heard tracks, will air on June 5, 2012 at 10pm ET/PT. The series often features ATTIKA 7 guitarist Rusty Coones and will include music from the band’s new album throughout the rest of the season.

ATTIKA 7 and Loudwire.com recently revealed the brand new track, ‘Devil’s Daughter’. Fans can head to www.Loudwire.com to listen to the track now at this location.

ATTIKA 7’s new album, Blood Of My Enemies, is set for a July 31, 2012 release and features ex-Biohazard vocalist Evan Seinfeld, lead guitarist, notable songwriter and famed (Sons of Anarchy) motorcycle builder Rusty Coones, and bassist Tony Campos, founding member of Static X, who also currently performs in Soulfly, Prong, Possessed, Asesino and Ministry. Emmanuelle De Hericourt to release new album

Emmanuelle De Héricourt to release latest album as EDH June 12th; North American dates upcoming.

“Ice” is the first single and video from the new EDH album Yaviz

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9ggWv_DaPU

Paris-based musician Emmanuelle De Héricourt, also known as the artist EDH will release her latest album Yaviz on June 12th via the French label Lentonia Records, distributed in America by Nail Distribution.

De Héricourt’s music is demanding and scholarly, synthetic and human, mechanic and sensual and all the while it is still accessible and catchy. Check out the evidence on “Ice”, the first single from Yaviz streaming now.

Writer David McKenna of The Quietus.com recently noted that the previous EDH album The Correct Use Of Pets (a collaboration with French artist Hypo) “has probably been one of my most replayed albums of the last decade.”

McKenna went on to say that “Its bricolage pop was undoubtedly post-modern but not merely as a smirking anti-statement; assembled from uncanny samples and analogue keyboards, it is re-imagined 80’s new wave electronic pop, lounge music and all manner of dance music styles.”

Yaviz will be released on June 12th to be followed by several EDH performances in North America with other Lentonia Records artists including Video Love and Phoebe Jean and The Air Force. See below for dates.

The vinyl edition of Yaviz will be accompanied by a CD of remixes by Subtitle, UNISON, Stereovoid, Nicolas Jorio, Elmapi, Ricky Hollywood, Hypo and more.

The Toxic Avenger releases album

French DJ and producer Simon Delacroix, better known as The Toxic Avenger, produces music that speaks to the darkest depths of the imagination, fusing a chilling mix of pulsing electronic music and crime scene noir. Following the release of two buzzed-about singles last year, The Toxic Avenger has unleashed his first full-length album, ANGST, today via Little Owl Recordings. Bursting with the sinister, genre-bending sound for which Delacroix is known, ANGST is now available on iTunes and all other digital retailers.

Album track “3,2,1” is a thumping, ghostly track that offers a glimpse into Toxic’s dark world with a shimmering ethereal breakdown.

ANGST opens with “Nu 1553,” an energetic track that takes listeners on a jolting ride with punctuating bursts of synth and an erratic beat. “Angst One” picks up right where the opening track leaves off before slowing into an eerie, unsettling swirl of strings that shriek with a sense of urgency and forewarning. “Alien Summer” is an electro-pop gem with airy guest vocals by Annie floating above a pulsating dance beat. Vocal melodies shine on “Never Stop,” with its infectious, anthem-like chorus hovering above layers of synth that cut through the silence like a knife. The North American version of ANGST also features special remixes of “3,2,1” by Beat Torrent and Equateur.

In addition to sharing stages with artists like Diplo, MSTRKRFT, Bloody Beetroots and Crystal Castles, The Toxic Avenger has made a name for himself remixing tracks by Ladytron, Benny Benasi, Chromeo and others. Stay tuned for more exciting news from The Toxic Avenger as he spreads his reign of terror across the US!

Ed Romanoff to release new album

Multi award winning Americana artist Ed Romanoff will release his self titled debut CD on June 26th. The accomplished and evocative album, already receiving much praise from press and industry insiders, was produced by Crit Harmon, esteemed for his work with Martin Sexton, Lori McKenna, and Mary Gauthier, and features vocals from Josh Ritter, Tift Merritt, Meg Hutchinson, and Mary Gauthier. The new record is being hailed as a gritty masterwork of atmospheric Americana.

The eleven-track debut cuts a wide emotional swath, from the good-natured sorry-I-messed-up sentimentality of "I Must Have Done Something Right" to the brave vulnerability of "St. Vincent De Paul." Ed wrote the latter after a personal pilgrimage with Gauthier to the orphanage where she had been left on the day she was born. The two became close friends, connecting over the clouds of their pasts.

Ed has also been selected as a finalist in the 2012 Telluride Troubadour competition, which brings together songwriters from around the world at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival (June 21-24) each summer solstice weekend in Telluride, CO. He will also be performing at the festival.

This skillful debut has a moony ambience with elegiac lap steel, saloon violins, and a gentle hum of Wurlitzer organs. Its smoky haze and rustic production are delicately grounded by the grit and earthiness of Ed's voice - gentle yet haunting - while his guitar playing is economic and steeped in all stripes of Americana, from boozy blues to brothel jazz.

"It took two generations and two years to write the record," Ed says. It was worth the wait.

Lucy Michelle & the Velvet Lapelles release new album

Minneapolis sextet Lucy Michelle And The Velvet Lapelles are pleased to release their newest full length album, HEAT, today. HEAT is the band's fourth full-length release and their first since 2010's Good of That. The album was recorded at Vacation Island Recording Studios in Brooklyn with acclaimed producer/engineer Matt Boynton (MGMT, Beirut, Bat for Lashes). HEAT spotlights the band's eclectic musical style, creating a brilliant wash of organic psych-folk from a blend of interweaving ukeleles, accordion, electric guitar, upright bass, cello, drums and (of course) Lucy Michelle's uniquely recognizable vocals. For complete track listing, please see below.

The band is also excited to announce that their recently released music video for HEAT's first single "Just A Kid" will have its MTV premiere on June 11 on their Freshman 5 program. The video was created by Picture Machine Productions, the same team who produced last year's music video for Bon Iver's "Calgary."

The Dig releases new album

New York's The Dig released their album Midnight Flowers on May 29th via Buffalo Jump Records. To celebrate, they made an inspiring YouTube Playlist. In July they will move to Los Angeles by popular demand and return for a residency at Silverlake Lounge after playing their successful shows with Ben Kweller last month. (see all dates below). The band is proud to lend their single to Turn the Tide: Songs for "Last Call at the Oasis" a companion chartity album to the new film Last Call at the Oasis in support of the global water crisis alongside 20 unreleased exclusive tracks from artists including Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds, Alabama Shakes, My Morning Jacket and more.

The Dig's sound has been developing ever since the band's two singers Emile Mosseri and David Baldwin started making music together when they were eleven years old. After meeting California native Erick Eiser, the three songwriters have been writing tunes and playing in different bands since they were 16 years old. Anchored by sharp guitars, a woozy synth backdrop and airtight vocal harmonies, the new album Midnight Flowers which is produced by Bryce Goggin (Pavement, The Apples In Stereo, Swans, Antony & The Johnsons) will come out on 5/29 on Buffalo Jump Records. It recalls styles ranging from T. Rex to Brian Eno to The Everly Brothers.

Leading up to the release of Midnight Flowers, The Dig have pressed a limited number of cassette tapes containing the album's first two singles, "Red Rose In The Cold Winter Ground" and "I Already Forgot Everything You Said." "Even though it takes us about 15 minutes to make each individual cassette, which is done using an old boom box in the back of our van between shows, we like the idea of having the songs that we recorded using analog tape machines available on cassette. For any of our fans that have moved on from 1995, each cassette comes with a digital download."

Following their acclaimed 2010 debut, Electric Toys, The Dig amassed a passionate national following with magnetic live performances touring with the likes of Portugal. The Man, The Antlers, and The Walkmen. The band began writing new songs on the road and back home in New York between tours. The new songs reflect a rich sense of lyricism in "Red Rose in the Cold Winter Ground" and "Glass Horse" while thrumming with a charged pop sensibility in "All Tied Up" and "Break the Silence." When we were writing "I Already Forgot Everything You Said," guitarist and vocalist David Baldwin recalls, "We had just gotten off the road with The Antlers and we were listening to a lot of Bob Dylan's Time Out of Mind. I think those influences found their way into that song particularly. But really the songs on this album are personal."

The Dig are:
David Baldwin (Guitar/Vocals)
Emile Mosseri (Bass/Vocals)
Erick Eiser (Keyboards/Guitar)
Mark Demiglio (Drums)

The Dig live:
5/31: Chicago, IL @ Schubas (TICKETS - include free copy of album)

Lisa Marie Presley to tour in support of new album

Lisa Marie Presley will launch her first tour in more than five years on June 14 at Gramercy Theatre in New York City, NY. The headline outing will include performances at Chicago's Bottom Lounge (6/20) and The Roxy in West Hollywood, CA (6/26).

Presley celebrated the album's release with a CD signing at Sun Studios in her hometown of Memphis, TN, a special evening at the GRAMMY® Museum in Los Angeles and numerous television appearances. You can check out Presley performing the album's lead single, "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet," on "American Idol" here.

"Storm and Grace is the album she was born to make," said Rolling Stone. "Lisa Marie Presley gets back to bluesy-country basics in 'Storm & Grace' and breaks free from outside expectations," observed the Los Angeles Times. USA Today praised its mix of "rootsy riffs and confessional lyrics" and NPR Music declared: "In her new album, Storm and Grace, she has found her voice."

Spinner.com observed: "Presley has made the strongest album of her career...It's a moody masterpiece, exploring the demons and angels of her life" while Memphis' Commercial Appeal called Storm and Grace "a homecoming: a sumptuous album of country-soul, blues, and roots oriented songs that confirm her Southern lineage."Entertainment Weekly praised the "smoky, spooky" single "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet." The accompanying video, directed by Dean Karr, is equally atmospheric and can be seen here.

Produced by 12-time GRAMMY® winner T Bone Burnett, Storm and Grace is Presley's Universal Republic/XIX Recordings debut and follows 2003's Gold-certified To Whom It May Concern and 2005's Now What, which both debuted in the Top 10 on The Billboard's 200.

The Bottlecap Boys in Altadena June 7

The Bottlecap Boys
a four piece folk band from Portland, OR
will be performing at
The Coffee Gallery Backstage
on Thursday, June 7.

The Bottlecap Boys American West Summer Tour 2012

Tour Dates:
May 25 - July 8

Artist site: http://www.thebottlecapboys.com

Tour video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZRVqyy7L8c

The Bottlecap Boys’ music has been described as infectious,
boot-stompin’ folk. Their tagline says it all: challenge your face to
push the borders of its smile. Their performances are magnetic,
barrelling forwards with freight train vocal harmonies, cheeky lyrics
about ex- (and future!) lovers and rambunctious bouts of soloing by each
of the four musicians.

Building on their jazz and classical backgrounds and influenced by the
Americana sounds of The Avett Brothers and Old Crow Medicine Show, the
Bottlecap Boys typical lineup features songwriter Lukas Borsten on
guitar, Ross Becker on mandolin (the two carry most of the singing),
Adam Willumsen on violin and Mike Raley on bass. When the four meet,
their music captures all the timeless elements of great bluegrass
--heart, harmony-- and stir in their own brand of carefree exuberance
and joyful camaraderie.

Their summer tour started with a May 25 performance at Seattle’s NW
Folklife Festival on the Indie Roots Stage, and passes through
Washington, Oregon, California, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, Utah,
Wyoming, Montana and Idaho before wrapping up in early July with
performances in Seattle.

“The band members bill themselves as ‘pure, insatiable energy
guaranteed to lift your spirits,’ and they delivered.”
Conrad Wharton, The Puget Sound Trail (11/18/11)

Shows:
Wed. June 06 - Basement Tavern at the Victorian - Santa Monica, CA
Thurs. June 07 - The Coffee Gallery Backstage - Altadena, CA

'Spaceland' opens at Bermudez Projects gallery in LA June 2

Bermudez Projects Celebrates 1-Year Anniversary with Six-Artist Group Show: “SPACELAND – Los Angeles Vast, Light, Modern”

It's probably safe to say that no start-up gallery in downtown LA has ever had a first year to match Bermudez Projects, which included not only packed openings and sold-out shows, but earned recognition from the Getty Foundation … all accomplished by someone the establishment would consider an outsider.

Bermudez Projects, celebrating its first birthday this month at 117 West 9th Street, in a blazing white, light-filled space up on the 8th floor, is owned and operated by Julian Bermudez. A new gallerist should keep his expectations manageable. But, “Wow,” Bermudez says, pausing with a hammer and level in his hands as he hangs pieces for yet another show, “It's been a tremendous year,” from the belly-to-belly crowd at the gallery's first show, photos by KPCC radio host John Rabe; to two sold-out shows by the Empress of Collage, Amanda Beckmann; to the weirdness of Gordon Henderson and the abstractions of Enrique Castrejon.

But the biggest feather in the brand new gallerist's cap was when the Bermudez Projects exhibit of works by LA printmaker David Weidman, “Modern Master: Prints, 1967-1974,” was accepted as a Pacific Standard Time exhibit in January. “For years,” Bermudez says, “David was categorized as a pop culture illustrator. Now, all of a sudden, he was rightly recognized as an artist who contributed to an era – Southern California's landmark post-War period. It was wonderful for David, and also reaffirmed what I’m trying to do at the gallery.”

Bermudez’s goal is simple. He says, “I want to find the next great American artist. I’m looking for art that I haven’t seen before. That’s all. Some galleries specialize in particular genres or won’t take artists who don’t have an MFA. I don’t care about their bona fides. I care about their art. If it makes me laugh or cry, it’s something I want in my gallery.”

Julian Bermudez wants to spread art. Good art. Art that stirs emotions. Art that's affordable. And he wants to provide a space for artists who share that vision.

Come to a Bermudez Projects opening and you never know what you'll find. Kids and adults were fighting to buy art at Beckmann's exhibits, “Failure is an Option” and “Hasten Slowly.” George Takei was posing for photos with shirtless waiters at Castrejon's “Waifs & Strays,” an examination of queer subculture. The LA Times’ Steve Lopez and photographer Gary Leonard were rubbing elbows at Rabe’s “Vast Wasteland,” a collection of Hipstamatic photos of discarded TV sets. “That's my business model,” Bermudez says. “Bring in exciting artists, bring in exciting, engaged people, and let the creative sparks fly!”

Thinking back over the year, Bermudez beams when he talks about his artists. “Enrique can measure anything, and I’m always amazed by the time he invests in each piece. Collectors always ask me, ‘Is he crazy?’” Gordon Henderson “could do ‘pretty’ if he wanted to. But he chooses to be very Outsider. His works draw me in, and when I’m in them, I feel odd.” Amanda Beckmann, he says, “Is one f---ing badass artist, with no official training in art!”

Bermudez earned a BA in art history from UCLA and worked at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Craft and Folk Art Museum, and Pacific Asia Museum. At the latter, in 2009, he co-curated one of the most popular exhibits in PAM’s history, “The Samurai Re-Imagined,” a groundbreaking examination of the parallels between ancient Japanese art and modern manga and anime. It was a show that drew multi-generational audiences and was emblematic of Bermudez’s passion.

Bermudez Projects is celebrating its first year with “SPACELAND,” a group show by all the artists who participated in his first year, plus new artists who will have full shows in coming months. “I wanted them to capture LA, so I simply gave them three key words that sum up LA for me: Vast, Light, and Modern.” Rabe and Henderson are supplying new works, Castrejon and Beckmann are constructing site-specific installations, and Johnny Taylor and Carlos Ulloa are showing large-scale paintings on vellum and mixed-media collages, respectively.

Before he went back to laying out the new show, Bermudez paused at his 8th floor window and looked out over the bustling Fashion District.

“Downtown LA is the perfect place for me. I have to hand it to visionaries like (architect) Wade Killefer who saw the potential here, and then worked to make it viable for people to live here and open businesses here.”

The public opening is Saturday, June 2 from 7-10PM. To attend, please contact Julian Bermudez at julianbermudez@hotmail.com

Bermudez Projects is at 117 W. 9th Street, Space 810, Los Angeles, California 90015. By appointment only. For more information visit www.julian-bermudez.com

The mission of Julian Bermudez is to discover and cultivate emerging artists, inspire creativity and imagination, and promote the appreciation of art by presenting art outside museums and galleries.

PK release album and to tour

High-energy, scrappy indie-pop quintet, PK, have released their sophomore project, The Lost Boy Sessions, today. Sonically described as "The Killers meet Vampire Weekend," PK has been compared to such acts as The Cure, U2 and The Gaslight Anthem. After the band's debut full-length, Into The Roaring, garnered attention from Rolling Stone, Nylon Guys, Alternative Press and Pac Sun Music, PK's highly anticipated second release, The Lost Boy Sessions is destined to be at the top of everyone's summer playlist. The band is currently touring the West coast in support of the EP's release. Purchase The Lost Boy Sessions on iTunes.

Hailing from San Luis Obispo, California, PK is made up of Travis Hawley (Vocals), Matt DePauw (Guitar), Mikel Van Kranenburg (Bass), Nick Fotinakes (Guitar) and Rico Rodriguez (Drums). While the members initially met in high school, vocalist Hawley was born in the United Arab Emirates and lived in England for five years before moving to the U.S. His brief stint in the UK deeply affected his vocal style and he has often been compared with emotive British artists such as Robert Smith, Bono, and Danny Elfman.

After releasing their first full length Into the Roaring, PK was immediately hand selected and published by Rolling Stone Magazine as 1 of 16 top unsigned artists in the United States. In the past year, the band has opened for such acts as Angels and Airwaves, Twin Atlantic, Aerosmith, Shiny Toy Guns and Youngblood Hawk. PK recorded their new EP 'The Lost Boys Sessions' at the famed Red Bull Studio in Los Angeles. Check out PK's cover of the Magnetic Fields' "I Think I Need A New Heart" on Relix.com. Watch the official music video for "Berelain" on AltPress.com.

PK has released The Lost Boy Sessions on May 29th. For more information, catch up with PK here:

End o' week musings

What a week it was!

Last weekend was the end of the Renaissance Pleasure Faire and I danced my tushie off. It's only today that I finally feel fully recovered, although I still am looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow (so take the hint and don't call, text or bug me in anyway til afternoon!). It was a lot of fun doing Faire and I really enjoy the company of my group, but it's a long commitment and gets tiring after so many "lost weekends." Plus you should see the pile of clothes in my dirty laundry basket and the dust on my TV! Yes, I've got a lot of chores waiting for me...

I had some good interviews this week, including talking with Joanna Santos, curator of "Hollow Thoughts: A Skull Exhibit" that is opening at Gallery Nucleus in Alhambra in June. Check it out and make plans http://www.gallerynucleus.com/. It's on of my favorite art venues, plus it has a store with cool t-shirts, books and other finds.

My other neat chat was with Robert Bell of Kool & the Gang. He was cool-- and nice and interesting. The band is on tour with Van Halen and will be in Los Angeles and Anaheim over the next two weeks. In case you didn't hear, VH has canceled all its dates after the end of June. I'm not very surprised, but I feel bad for Kool & the Gang because they had to make time in their schedule for the shows. Kool has been doing its thing for four decades and is still touring globally to the delight of its still-growing fan base.

Wednesday night I went to the Key Club in Hollywood to see Sabaton ( http://www.sabaton.com/ ). Wow! I liked their albums and enjoyed my interview with lead vocalist Joakim (visit http://www.sgvn.com/ and search the archive to find my story online), but live they were amazing. Those boyz from Sweden know how to rock and love what they do, plus they're easy on the eyes. The crowd was totally into the show and kept chanting "Sabaton" in between each song. They also sang along with every tune, even the new ones. And this was the record release party!

I took my friend John with me and he's now a fan. He told me he has watched Sabaton's videos and has added their albums to his collection. I wonder if his band will cover some of the material?

Well, it's a three-day weekend for me, but I haven't filled it up with stuff to do because I really need to be a bit of a slug... ooo and that nasty housework needs doing... ugh! But I am thinking of going to see Civet at House of Blues in Hollywood tonight and I have plans to go to the Scottish Festival on Sunday. Maybe I'll get invited to a barbecue Monday... or I'll have a nice afternoon nap!

In rotation this week: Sabaton (too obvious?!), Black Sabbath, Terrible Things, Kirk Whalum, Kool & the Gang and Tom Petty.

Photos we got 'em: A couple of cute pet pix and photos of me and fellow blogger Gary ( http://2o3lines.blogspot.com/ ) from our visit at the Hard Rock in San Diego the other week.

Thought o' the week: Put it aside. I'll be honest, I'm not happy. In fact I'm on a FTW bent (for those of you who don't know what FTW means, it's not very nice). Things in my life are not going the way I expected and I'm beyond frustrated. I'm hurt and angry and more because I have invested a lot of time and passion into something that doesn't seem to be working out.

This morning I woke up with a different attitude. Instead of feeling down or mad, I have reached the "don't care" point. This is very rare for me. Today I have no patience for anything or anyone who doesn't meet my agenda and I just want to do what makes me feel good no matter how it affects said anything or anyone. Yeah, no more Ms. Nice Grrrl today...

But then, I remembered I have a day off on Monday and it's Memorial Day, a day to remember our military. My heart softened. I am not important right now. What I want or need is not important right now. What is important is showing our support and caring for the people who are willing to give or have given their lives for us. To keep me safe and maintain my freedom.

I plan to take some time on Monday to think about and appreciate our military. I hope I can find a way to show how much they mean to me. I will be pushing my agenda aside for the greater good. The way it should be. I encourage you to also put it aside, whatever it is, and honor our military with me.

Keep on rockin'

Pasadena Chalk Festival June 16 and 17

Over 600 dedicated chalk artists will converge on Paseo Colorado’s interconnected mix of retail, entertainment, and garden promenades as the annual Pasadena Chalk Festival continues the legacy of bringing this unique art form to Southern California. The festival offers visitors an opportunity to shop, dine or see a movie as they see the artworks created by the artists come to life before their very eyes during the two day festival. The Pasadena Chalk Festival returns to Paseo Colorado Father’s Day Weekend, June 16 - 17, 2012 from 10am – 7pm and is FREE and open to the public.

Now celebrating its 20th year, the Pasadena Chalk Festival places over 25,000 sticks of pastel chalks in the hands of hundreds of “Madonnari” (Italian for street painter) who come from all areas of Southern California and beyond to spend two days on their hands and knees creating spectacular murals on concrete areas throughout the shopping center. In every style imaginable, from classical to contemporary, whimsical and fantastic, to socially relevant, the murals are designed and created by independent artists as well as teams representing art schools, museums and cultural centers. The artists are an incredibly diverse group, representing many ethnicities and age ranges. Prestigious cultural festivals in Europe, North America and South America celebrate this traditional art form and are popular attractions for artists, art lovers and people from all walks of life.

In addition to the extraordinary opportunity to watch artists at work, guests can enjoy live music throughout the weekend and children can get creative in the KID’S CHALKLAND, a designated area just for children. There will also be a Pasadena Police Classic Car Show on Sunday from 11am to 4pm featuring classic and fun cars and the Pasadena Police Helicopter.

One of the highlights of the Pasadena Chalk Festival is “Animation Alley,” a specifically designed area spotlighting some of the top and upcoming animators and graphic designers from Southern California. The feature has proven to be a success as talented artists created masterful chalk renderings of their signature work, including classic characters, renowned personalities from film and television and the artist’s own original murals. “Animation Alley” is located in Lower Theatre Court at Paseo Colorado.

In 2010, the Pasadena Chalk Festival introduced a new addition for the artists. On Upper Theatre Court, the new “Chalk of Fame” sponsored by ArcLight Pasadena is designated for artists who will create chalk murals of famous movie posters with a special prize provided by ArcLight Pasadena awarded to the winning mural in this category.

Always a highlight of the Pasadena Chalk Festival is the Artist Gallery where people can bid on affordable, small painted canvases created by the participating artists and a variety of Festival merchandise that will be available for purchase with proceeds benefiting Light Bringer Project.

At the conclusion of the festival, participating artists will select the outstanding murals of the festival from amongst their peers. Awards include 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place Best of Show, Best Technique, Best Use of Color, Best Artist Original Design and more. Festival visitors will also have the opportunity to vote for their favorite mural, the “Paseo Colorado People’s Choice” award. Ballots will be available in the Shopping Center’s participating retail stores.

The Pasadena Chalk Festival benefits the community arts programs of the Light Bringer Project, a Pasadena-based, non-profit arts organization founded by local residents who were interested in the role the arts, architecture and design played in the growth and development of their community. For more information on Light Bringer Project programs and partnerships, visit www.lightbringerproject.com.

Paseo Colorado is located at 280 East Colorado Boulevard (between Marengo and Los Robles Avenues) in the heart of Pasadena’s historic downtown Civic Center. Plenty of convenient parking is available. For festival information call (626) 795-8891 or visit www.pasadenachalkfestival.com.

The dA Center for the Arts is proud to present Exhibit Love: For Land…Form…and Humanity and Robert Stillwell: Recent Works on display June 9th through July 28, 2012. On display in the main gallery, Exhibit Love: For Land…Form…and Humanity collects the works of Rick Caughman, Joella Jean Mahoney, and John Edward Svenson. Robert Stillwell: Recent Works exhibits the artist’s recent venture into abstract paintings. The dA will be hosting a collector’s reception on June 09, 2012 from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm, and an opening reception for the general public on June 09, 2012 from 6:30 pm – 10:00 pm. Additionally, the dA will be hosting a Second Saturday viewing in conjunction with the Pomona Arts Colony Second Saturday Art Walk on July 14, 2012 from 3:00 pm – 10:00 pm.

Exhibit Love: For Land…Form…and Humanity brings Rick Caughman, Joella Jean Mahoney, and John Edward Svenson together in one exhibition. Drawing from each artist’s extensive body of work, curator Rick Caughman selected pieces that examine the loss of loved ones and the inspiration that they continue to provide. This exhibition includes work representative of each artist’s prolific career, including landscapes, sculptural forms, and installations, all of which present a profound exploration of the influence of love on art, and art on love.

This exhibition coincides with Robert Stillwell: Recent Works, on display in the dA’s Joan Weldon Gallery. Stillwell has spent most of his eighty years as an artist establishing himself through his commercial work, while devoting his personal art to landscape paintings. In this exhibition he deviates from both forms and explores more abstract forms.

About Rick Caughman: Rick Caughman is best known for his illustrations, but has accumulated a diverse body of work during his career. He has accumulated thirty years of experience in advertising illustration and graphic design, which includes founding an advertising agency L.R. Caughman and Caughman, Inc with his brother. Additionally, he has twenty-five years of teaching experience from various higher education institutions including Chaffey College, Loma Linda University, and the University of California, Riverside. He received his Bachelors in Fine Arts in Advertising Illustration from the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena. This is his fourth exhibition at the dA Center for the Arts.

About Joella Jean Mahoney: Joella Jean Mahoney is best known for her dramatic large scale oil landscapes which bridge the gap between realisms and abstraction. Her love of the Arizona landscape is apparent in her body of work which frequently portrays its flowers, lakes and canyon walls. She received her Bachelors in Arts from Northern Arizona University and a Masters in Fine Arts in Painting from Claremont Graduate University. Mahoney has displaying twenty and thirty retrospective exhibitions at the Claremont Graduate University Art Department Gallery, the Northern Arizona University Art Museum, the University of La Verne, Harris Art Museum, and the West Valley Art Museum in Phoenix Arizona; as well as 50 year retrospectives exhibitions at the Kolb Museum, South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, the Northern Arizona Museum, Flagstaff, Arizona. She is a professor emeritus at the University of La Verne where she began developing the art department in 1964.

About John Edward Svenson: John Edward Svenson is known for his architectural sculptures which range from small intimate wood carvings to publicly commissioned large scale installations located in numerous parks, hospitals, malls, hotels, airports, schools, museums, and churches. His work has shown in museums and galleries around the world including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, National Academy of Art, New York, and Pasadena Art Museum (now the Norton Simon). Svenson has received two American Institute of Architecture Awards for Excellence in Sculptures.

About Robert Stillwell: Robert Stillwell has spent most of his career working as a commercial artist including holding past positions of Art Director of Hallmark Cards in Kansas City and Director of Buzza-Cardozo Greeting Card Co. in Anaheim. In his personal artist endeavors he is know for his acrylic landscapes paintings, and more recently his venture into abstract paintings. Stillwell attended the University of Missouri, Kansas City and the Kansas City Art Institute. Additionally he studied at the Corcoran Art School in Washington DC, and the New York City Sculpture Center. He has been painting for eighty years.

About The dA Center for the Arts: The dA Center for the Arts is a non-profit arts organization operating in the Pomona Arts Colony since 1984. Dedicated to the community, the center serves to provide opportunities to experience, appreciate and support the arts through community art classes, events and exhibits.

Heidi Happy to tour in support of new album

Heidi Happy is coming stateside in early June in support of her full length, Hiding With The Wolves, coming out on 6/5/12. Already know as one of the most influential female voices in her home country of Switzerland, Heidi Happy has also perfected a stage show that is not to be missed. Don’t skip this rare opportunity to see her in the states.

MAY 31 - VANCOUVER - THE MAIN

JUNE 1 - VANCOUVER - FALCONETTI'S (with Timothy Jaromir)

JUNE 5 - PORTLAND - MOTHER FOUCAULT'S BOOKSHOP (7 p.m.)

JUNE 6 - PORTLAND - ALBERTA ROSE THEATRE (with Good Night Billygoat)

JUNE 8 - OAKLAND - THE UPTOWN (with Poor Bailey, Whiskerman)

June 10 - SAN FRANCISCO - AMNESIA

JUNE 12 - LOS ANGELES - THE HOTEL CAFE (with Boys School)

JUNE 13 - SAN DIEGO - 98 BOTTLES

JUNE 14 - VENICE - MOMAI

Heidi Happy is a singer songwriter from Luzern, Switzerland. The three albums she has released since 2007 have established her as one of the country's greatest and most influential female voices. Her albums have progressed from the playful pop songs of "Back Together" (2007) to the more orchestrated sounds of "Flowers, Birds And Home" (2008) to the lush, emotional mini-symphonies of "Hiding With The Wolves" (which debuted at number 10 in her native Switzerland). Tonequake Records is proud to be able present "Hiding With The Wolves" to her fans in North America.

From her Swiss label : Retreating to the frozen Lake of Constance, Heidi Happy locked herself in her house and let go of an array of emotions that she had, as of yet, kept her songs protected from. Not unlike a youthful, female Ennio Morricone or an emotional early-sixties Frank Sinatra, she wrote, composed and arranged an album of sensual innocence, of immense purity, of sophisticated abandon.

Along with the stellar songwriting and that ever so beautiful voice, what makes this record so endearing is the understated use of the orchestra. Heidi Happy uses the classical instruments as they were meant to be, an elegant accompaniment of velvet strings and muffled brass, never overshadowing the band, always complementing the song.

From a house on the frozen shores of a small Swiss lake to a gigantic classical studio to the Los Angeles mixing desk of Andrew Scheps to the mastering rooms of Bernie Grundman, Heidi Happy has stayed true to the purity of her vision and has created a timeless album. Her songs of love, loss, ports and horse rides are as haunting as the nature that surrounded their birth, as precious and innocent as the voice that gave them life and as beautifully soothing as the spring that will see them released at last.
