End o' Week Musings

I know it's been a true 7-day week, but somehow it feels shorter this morning. Maybe because I'm actually a little bit ahead with my work for next week already... shhh! Don't jinx me!

Last Friday I met Carin and Tom at Maggie's Pub in Santa Fe Springs for dinner. I had a nice big bowl of clam chowder and we split a big plate of assorted English goodies. I ended up coming home with a nice banger and some shepard's pie. Carin and Tom also brought me a goose egg from their goose Gloria.

Goose eggs are absolutely wonderful! They're two times or more larger than chicken eggs and taste richer. But it is a little weird for me. I like knowing where the egg came from, as I know Gloria gets lots of good things to eat and is cared for with lots of TLC, but it is kinda strange because, well, I know Gloria... personally. I've fed her lettuce and petted her. Still, her eggs are the best!

Saturday and Sunday were the last two days of the Renaissance Faire. I made sure to make my final rounds for any shopping I might want to do and visit friends and just have a great time.

On Saturday night I went to T. Boyle's Tavern in Pasadena to see Dramarama. It was fun to check out the venue-- they have a huge selection of beer, a couple of shuffleboard games upstairs and decent sound.

Sunday I was a mix of emotions at Faire. I was happy because I had had so much fun and was looking forward to my first weekend, heck, day off since March. I was also sad because I won't be seeing my group regularly and some of the people I probably won't see until next year and that's only if my life allows me to do Faire again.

The rest of my week was interviews and writing. I spoke with comedian Bill Word and Trever of Face to Face about their new album and tour. I remember punkers Face to Face quite well from back in the days when I fronted the hard rock/heavy metal band Morpheus. We often gigged the same venues on the same nights and they were always very nice- polite during band changeovers and good to chat with over a beer. I'm happy to report that Trever is still a great guy and doing well. It's cool that some of the groups from back then are making a living with their music still today.

Today I will be chatting with Peter from Runner Runner. They're on tour with Good Charlotte and Yellowcard and will be hitting SoCal in a couple of weeks.

Tomorrow my huge plan is to go to Joann Fabrics for the sale and see what goodies I can find and then take my mom to the grocery store. In the afternoon I hope to nap. Woo hoo! I don't have anything else planned, although I'm hoping to get some time with my special guy and find some kind of adventure. Maybe I'll whip him at minigolf again or perhaps we'll find a nice place to take a walk and chat...

I won't be blogging again until Wednesday. I'm sorry, but I will be away from my computer except for any work that needs to be done for my e-zine I need a break badly, so I hope you'll understand.

In rotation this week: David Serby, Peppino D'Agostino, The Offspring and Orange Sky.

Photos we got 'em: Just some cute pet pics from the Web.

Thought o' the week: It's Memorial Day Weekend. Time to pull out the red checkered tablecloths and warm up the barbecue. Time for pool parties and white jeans. Time for running through the sprinklers and playing Frisbee. It's also a time to be thankful.

We need to remember the reason for the holiday-- the men and women who have given their lives to keep our freedom. Without the sacrifices of these courageous and selfless people, we might not be enjoying our picnics and sunshine.

Freedom is not something to be taken for granted, if you think so, look around the world or just listen to the news. The other day, a Saudi Arabian woman made the news for landing in jail after driving a car. Was she in an accident? Was she drunk? Texting? No! She was just driving, something illegal for women to do in that country. Here, I can drive whenever and wherever I like, unaccompanied and even listen to whatever music I wish at the same time! It's not as small a thing as you might think.

So sure, celebrate, have fun, enjoy a wonderful day off from work. And don't feel guilty for feeling good, just take some time to remember the reason we have this holiday.

Thank you to all the brave men and women who have given their lives so I can live in freedom. And thank you to all the veterans and active troops for all you have done and continue to do to make America great.

Keep on rockin'

Brendan Perry in LA June 13

Brendan Perry’s second solo album Ark is now available in North American on The End Records. It is Perry's first studio album in eleven years. As one half of Dead Can Dance for nearly three decades, Brendan’s music remains highly regarded and influential on a global scale helping to redefine new musical genres.

Brendan Perry will kick off a North American co-headline tour with Robin Guthrie on May 30th in Washington, DC. In addition to performing select tracks from his catalogue and Ark, Perry will also be debuting brand new material on this tour.

Recorded in his studio in Ireland, Ark is a solo album in the truest sense, with Brendan playing every instrument, writing all the lyrics and being the sole creative force across the eight tracks. Most of the instrumentation on Ark is derived from samples and synthesisers, and is predicated on a theory of creating ambient, almost soundtrack based accompaniment to the lyricism of the songs. In its range of influences, the album also encompasses music from all four corners of the globe to create a global soundtrack for global themes.

While Ark is not a concept album, it does combine themes which run throughout. The lyrics of opener ‘Babylon’ focus on the current conflicts within the Middle East. ‘The Bogus Man’ and ‘This Boy’ put a human face on those charged with waging war on behalf of self serving political interests. While such dystopian themes could be seen to make for a very bleak experience, Ark is shot through with an emotional warmth and a belief in the redemptive power of humanity from which the album title is derived.

Ark is not just a refuge from a world on the brink of self destruction, but also a journey towards a better society and a more altruistic way of life.

Grimes in LA Tuesday

Grimes is weird pop influenced by styles such as R&B, Industrial, goth, hip hop and Western medieval organum. She is noted for simple but strong percussion, vocal virtuosity, and addictive melodies. Despite having little acquaintance with music before the age of 18, Grimes (born 1988) has overcome this barrier and used it to her advantage, exploding onto the music scene with a sound that is that is far different from that of her peers, and extremely broad in it’s references (Mariah Carey, Salem, Cocteau Twins, Gang Gang Dance, The Smiths, Prince). And yet, while all Grimes songs are different and genre-bending, there is a strong sound that is fully her own, characterized primarily by her chameleonlike voice. She cannot read music and has no understanding of theory or notation, so her attempts to imitate often fail. Rather, the result is particularly unique, strangely beautiful, sometimes scary, frequently melancholic and catchy as hell.

Idiot Glee to release album

Idiot Glee
Paddywhack LP Out June 7th On Moshi Moshi, Also Available On Vinyl Through Hop Hop On June 14th

Click Here To Pre-Order Vinyl On Insound

After the idyllic charm of last year’s debut single “All Packed Up / Don’t Drink The Water” Idiot Glee returns with his first album Paddywhack to be released on June 7th on Moshi Moshi.
23-year-old James Friley trades in spectral transmissions: multi-layered vocal concoctions that sound like they are emitted from a radio in the past, or coming over an unknown satellite frequency from the future, telling stories about a more idyllic time.

Mining an emotional territory between nostalgia and powerful sense of childlike wonder, his rustic arrangements belie a sophisticated sense of melody surrounded by palpable magic and mystery. Hypnotic looped vocal samples come into full bloom around beautifully cathartic, slow-burning choral interpretations, all the while retaining a graceful fragility.

Having trained as a classical pianist from age 7, a teenage Friley found the designated hours of practice quickly gave way to writing and improvising his own solo piano compositions. Having more of a pop sensibility the songs didn’t fit the repertoire of budding rock band ‘Bedtime’ and hence Idiot Glee began to take shape. The discovery on cassette of Pet Sounds in a flea market in 2008 proved a pivotal point. “I listened to it probably 100 times over the span of a year” he says and it became the catalyst in making Idiot Glee a full time hobby.

James Lee Stanely and Cliff Eberhardt to release Doors album

All Wood and Doors
Released May 28, 2011 on Beachwood Records.

"james lee stanley and cliff eberhardt are excellent pickers and what they did to our songs is unique and refreshing. it was a pleasure to be part of the project." John Densmore, The Doors.

All Wood and Doors, is an album like no other -- 12 Classic Doors songs sung and played by Cliff Eberhardt and James Lee Stanley; accompanied by: Peter Tork (monkees), Timothy B Schmit (eagles), Laurence Juber (paul mccartney & wings), Paul Barrere (little feat), Scott Breadman (rippingtons, lindsay buckingham), Chad Watson (david arkenstone, janis ian), and very special guests John Densmore and Robby Krieger.

Fans of The Doors, as well as Crosby Stills & Nash, Buffalo Springfield, Rubber Soul, the Eagles, or classic Beach Boys harmonies are in for a real treat.

Can you imagine what The Doors songs would have sounded like if they had been created with acoustic guitars? Would Light My Fire, Riders On the Storm or Touch Me been as powerful played on acoustic guitars and filled with vocal harmonies?

So were James Lee Stanley and Cliff Eberhardt, purveyors of acoustic rock music for decades. They took 12 Doors classics and turned them into something totally unthought of.

All Wood and Doors — a unique sounding album of classic Doors songs.

Robert Pollard to release album

2011 is turning out to be quite a year for Robert Pollard. The hugely successful Guided By Voices reunion tour is doing victory laps at Pitchfork, Northside, Hopscotch and Sasquatch Festivals, a tribute album is coming out for Record Store Day (including Pollard covers by Flaming Lips, Lou Barlow, David Kilgour, James Husband, Blitzen Trapper, Thurston Moore), and, believe it not, new White House Spokesman Jay Carney declared in a press conference that he's obsessed with Guided By Voices January, February and March saw three remarkable albums by Pollard projects (as well as a live Guided By Voices triple-LP) and watch out, here comes another one, with a new twist.

On Lord Of The Birdcage, out May 31st, Pollard reverses his usual songwriting process, transforming a dozen previously written poems into songs. His whimsical, surrealist lyrics take center stage.

Lord Of The Birdcage is a subtle record, of mostly steady, relaxed tempos, power pop, glam chugs, gorgeous ballads and a notable number of 3/4 waltz-time meters, including the haunting acoustic "In A Circle", the frenetic rocker "You Sold Me Quickly" and the lush string-driven "Silence Before Violence." Lord Of The Birdcage is a rather cohesive flowing work, and Pollard's sublime songs reveal their treasures through repeat listening. His albums are consistently rewarding.

H2O to pay homage to influence on new album

H2O has been a mainstay in hardcore and punk since their inception back in 1995 and have had many influences along the way. The band is thrilled to pay homage to those influential artists by covering their songs on the forthcoming album, Don’t Forget Your Roots. H2O will tip their hats to bands like The Ramones, Dag Nasty, Madball, Rancid, Circle Jerks, Descendents, Cro-Mags, Bad Brains, The Clash, Government Issue, Verbal Assault, Gorilla Biscuits, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, 7 Seconds, Embrace, Social Distortion, Sick of It All and Warzone on this release.

H2O vocalist Toby Morse commented, “This album is extremely important to us. These are bands that inspired us to start a band and who have inspired our personal lives. Also with so many young kids getting into hardcore every day, it’s good to always keep exposing them to the ROOTS of this music and getting them into some of the originators of hardcore/punk. We have all gotten to see this bands play live when we were young so covering their songs that made us happy and inspired as kids feels amazing and we feel honored.”

H2O comes from humble roots themselves, and have worked their way to help define the term “melodic hardcore”. The band formed back in the mid-90’s and have released five full-length albums with over 300,000 copies sold collectively. They’ve toured the world with the likes of AFI, the Misfits, toured the Warped Tour circuit and more, and they’ve established themselves as a household name and inspired countless others in their wake. H2O is happy to give back to those that have helped shape them on Don’t Forget Your Roots, coming this Fall from Bridge Nine Records. Full track list to be announced soon!

Opeth to release new album

Sweden’s most revered and respected progressive metal mavens Opeth will release Heritage, their third album for Roadrunner, on September 20th. The first single and video will be the song “The Devil’s Orchard.” Heritage follows up 2008’s Watershed and 2005’s Ghost Reveries, each of which garnered the forward-thinking, genre-bending band some of the best reviews of their career.

Opeth frontman and guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt weighed in on Heritage, saying, "It will be our 10th album/observation. I dig it; we all do. In fact, it feels like I've been building up to write for and participate on an album like this since I was 19."

Åkerfeldt went a little deeper and described the music contained within Heritage, saying, "It's quite intense at times in some 'old' murky way, and quite beautiful and stark at times, if I may say so myself. It's obvious I'm going to say nice things about it since I wrote basically the whole piece, but I guess it will raise a few eyebrows and it certainly is an acquired taste. I think you'll need a slightly deeper understanding of our music as a whole to be able to appreciate this record. I've realized my influences for this album are so diverse that I can't really say what it sounds like. If I can compare it to any other band, it would have to be Opeth, but it's different from the stuff we've done before. I've listened a lot to Alice Cooper for the last year, yet I can't say it sounds like 'No More Mr. Nice Guy.' I hope you'll like it once you hear it."

The album was produced by Åkerfeldt and mixed along with Porcupine Tree frontman/guitarist Steven Wilson, who is a labelmate of Opeth. Longtime collaborator Travis Smith also worked with Åkerfeldt to create, design and execute the album’s artwork.

The track listing for Heritage is as follows:

"The Devil's Orchard"
"I Feel the Dark"
"The Lines in My Hand"
"Marrow of the Earth"

Heritage will be released in several configurations that will certainly incite the interest of Opeth’s legion of fans, known for their passion for collecting and collectibles. The album will be released as a standard version; as a special edition loaded with extras; as a box set exclusive to the Roadrunner and the bands own official Omerch webstore; and as a double LP. There is something for every Opeth fan, thanks to this expansive variety of options.

Opeth will also embark on a seven-week, headline tour of the US. Dates will be announced imminently.

Pioneering musician/producer/composer/DJ Simon Posford storms the U.S. this summer with a massive run of Shpongle “Hybrid” DJ dates, debuting the highly anticipated “Shpongle presents The Shpongletron Experience.” For this tour, Posford reveals his brand-new "Decks, FX & 101" show made up of an arsenal of turntables, synths, and effects units. The tour coincides with the release of Younger Brother’s studio release, Vaccine. Vaccine is the third release for which Posford teams with longtime collaborators Benji Vaughan and Ruu Campbell.

The Shpongletron Experience's extended trek across the U.S.A. began April 12 and will run into July, including performances at such festivals as the Coachella Music and Art Festival, Electric Forest, Wakarusa and others. For the tour, the brand new Shpongle Hybrid DJ show finds Posford on turntables with his vintage analog Roland SH 101 and live synth effects. The complete list of tour dates is included below. The elaborately staged multi-media presentation, which Posford describes as a "maelstrom of beauty and surprise," can be expected to raise the bar on Shpongle's longstanding reputation for providing mind-bending, fully immersive multi-dimensional, multi-sensory experiences. T

he shows will incorporate The Shpongletron, a pyramid-like 18-foot structure (designed by Coast II Coast Entertainment and VJ Zebbler specifically for this tour) which will blast audiences with four levels of psychedelic mayhem, along with dancers, multiple video screens and a live DJ set by Posford. Posford will also showcase tracks off the recently released Shpongle EP The God Particle. Random Rab will open the shows.

The Shpongletron Experience tour coincides with the versatile Londoner's other current project: the release of Younger Brother's scintillating new album Vaccine. Vaccine (April 26, 2011/SCI Fidelity Records) is the third album by Younger Brother, in which Posford teams with longtime collaborators Benji Vaughan and Ruu Campbell. The album, which features Marc Brownstein (Disco Biscuits) on bass, Tom Hamilton (Brothers Past) on guitar and Joe Russo (who also plays in the Grateful Dead spin-off act Furthur) on drums, marks a notable evolution from the band's electronic origins, embracing melodic song structures and organic instrumental sounds.

A “U.K.” lineup of Younger Brother toured select U.S. cities this April - with Posford (synth/guitar), Vaughan (Ableton / synth) and Campbell (vocals) joined by Matt White on guitar, Chris Borud on bass and Nikolaj Bjerre on drums.

Ipalpiti Orchestral Ensemble in LA July 23

One of the rare musical events this summer in Los Angeles will be the finale performance by a group of musicians known as "The United Nations of Classical Music" or "Musical Peace Corps." Officially the ipalpiti Orchestral Ensemble, this rare convergence of talented young professional musicians drawn from twenty countries transcends philosophical and political conflict as they gather under the musical direction of one of L.A.'s finest classical music assets, maestro Eduard Schmieder, to perform for two weeks at various venues culminating with their grand finale performance at Disney Hall on July 23rd at 8pm.

In an effort to bring greater awareness to this unique classical music opportunity for Southern California, we would greatly appreciate any shout outs or placements in your summer calendar of musical events. Of course, if you are interested in pursuing a story on this timely collaboration of musicians from culturally disparate corners of the globe, LaunchPad PR can arrange for a conversation with Eduard Schmieder or his wife and ipalpiti director Laura Schmieder --- both founders of ipalpiti. A love for classical music as a powerful common bond for humanity and the energies of Eduard Schmeider has made this event possible along with his distinguished advisory board that includes artists such as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Yefim Bronfman, Ida Haendal, Gary Karr, Gidon Kremer, Wynton Marsalis and the late Yehudi Menuhin.

Tidelands to release album

“Holy Grail” is the first single and video from If… by Tidelands

See Tidelands live in San Francisco at a record release show for If… at Café du Nord on July 26th!

Tidelands is the duo of San Francisco’s Gabriel Montana Leis (Guitar, Flugelhorn, Vocals) and Mie Araki (Drums, Keyboards, Vocals). On the duo’s upcoming debut album If..., Leis and Araki have teamed up with Magik*Magik Orchestra conductor Minna Choi and Deerhoof engineer Ian Pellicci to create an album of sharp, poetic lyrics uniquely arranged with looped guitars, Moog bass and beautiful harmonies.

“I found myself writing melodies that I knew were meant for a horn,” Leis says of the Tidelands material that began to take shape in 2009. “Never having played a horn before, I purchased a beautiful vintage Benge flugelhorn and began at the beginning,” Leis says of the decision to learn the horn from scratch on his own. Leis soon recruited Araki, a classically trained percussionist, who then added a Moog to her ensemble of instruments, essentially learning to play the drums and synth at the same time.

Further exploring his earlier experiences in other bands writing for cello, violin and trumpet, Leis began using a looping device to write guitar parts that he could later pair with orchestral instruments. Araki would then transcribe these ideas to standard musical notation and via a connection with musician John Vanderslice, Tidelands was introduced to Choi and her ensemble, the Magik*Magik Orchestra.

“We gave her the framework of the songs and the charts and the freedom to create around what we had already written,” Leis explains. Recording engineer Pellicci was the final collaborator added to the project, and less than six short but studious months into becoming a flugelhorn player, Leis, Araki, Choi and Pellicci convened at San Francisco’s Tiny Telephone studios to create If...

If... will be released on July 26th, 2011. Tidelands will perform a hometown show in San Francisco at Café du Nord that same evening.

Consistently one of the highest rated programs on PBS over the past decade, the NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT will be broadcast before an audience of hundreds of thousands, as well as to troops serving around the world on the American Forces Network.

The NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT will be co-hosted for the sixth year by Emmy® Award-winner Gary Sinise (CSI: NEW YORK) and Tony® Award-winner Joe Mantegna (CRIMINAL MINDS), two acclaimed actors who have dedicated themselves to veteran’s causes and to supporting our troops in active service. Judas Priest on 'Idol" and to tour

No, your eyes did not deceive you – the one and only Judas Priest just debuted their new guitarist, Richie Faulkner, tonight on 'American Idol'! Ripping through a medley that included kick ass renditions of two 'British Steel' classics ("Living After Midnight" and "Breakin' the Law") with major Priest fan – and this season 'American Idol' hopeful – James Durbin joining in on vocals.

This is the second time that Durbin has professed his admiration for Priest on the show, as he wowed judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler a while back with a rendition of "You've Got Another Thing Comin'." Although Durbin was recently voted off the show, he undoubtedly has a bright rocking future ahead, as evidenced by his multi-octave vocal range.

Judas Priest recently announced plans to launch their farewell Epitaph Tour, which will take them around the world, including a just-announced U.S. tour of arenas from October through December, which will also feature opening acts Black Label Society and Thin Lizzy.

Speaking on Wednesday to the Rolling Stone website, Priest singer Rob Halford had the following to say about what fans can expect on the group's forthcoming trek.

"We're pulling out all the stops. We've built a brand new stage set, we've got all the effects that people love us for – the lasers, the fire, the bombs, the smoke, new costumes, and the bike. It's just a full-on metal extravaganza."

Few heavy metal bands have managed to scale the heights that Judas Priest has during their nearly 40 year career. Responsible for not only issuing some of metal's all-time classic albums ('British Steel,' 'Screaming for Vengeance,' and 'Painkiller') and anthems (the aforementioned "Breaking the Law" and "Living After Midnight," and "You've Got Another Thing Coming"), the group has been one of the leading arena rock acts for decades, and single-handedly introduced the "leather look" to heavy metal. And now Judas Priest are set to blast their way round the world one final time.

New Wizard of Oz album to be released

The 2011 London Palladium cast recording of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stunning new production of The Wizard Of Oz is currently available digitally and will be in stores June 28th through Decca Broadway in America. This 24 track set includes all the much-loved songs from the Oscar-winning movie score by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg, plus new songs by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

The production features multiple award-winning performer Michael Crawford as the Wizard and Danielle Hope – winner of the 2010 British television talent competition Over the Rainbow – as Dorothy. Other performers in the cast include Edward Baker-Duly (Tin Man), David Ganly (Cowardly Lion), Paul Keating (Scarecrow), Emily Tierney (Glinda) and Hannah Waddingham (Wicked Witch Of The West).

The Wizard of Oz is Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's first production together in the West End in over three decades. To create the new musical, Lloyd Webber adapted the 1939 film's screenplay with director Jeremy Sams, and added several new songs to the film's score with Rice. In July 2010, Lloyd Webber told the Daily Mail, "The fact is that The Wizard of Oz has never really worked in the theatre. The film has one or two holes where in the theatre you need a song. For example, there's nothing for either of the two witches to sing. Tim and I are doing quite a specific thing, because we know what's missing."

The production opened in England to excellent reviews and record-breaking business, and promises to inspire a new generation of fans by offering a new perspective on a timeless classic.

ZZ Top to release 'Live in Germany 1980'

For the first time on CD, on May 31, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release ZZ Top Live in Germany 1980. This 16-song Texas manifesto features guitarist Billy F Gibbons, drummer Frank Beard and bassist Dusty Hill, in an onstage explosion of barrelhouse jump blues and boogie. [MSRP $13.98]

The Grugahalle in Essen was rockin’ on that night in 1980. ZZ Top, touring in support of 1979’s Deguello, is totally energized on nine of Deguello’s tracks, complemented by fan favorites from Tres Hombres (1973) and Fandango (1975), as well as righteous roots-reverent covers of Elmore James and Elvis Presley. (The concert was filmed for German television’s popular Rockpalast program and released on DVD as Double Down Live in 2009.)

Rock’n’Roll Hall Of Famers ZZ Top have never had a personnel change over the course of their 40-year career. These instantly-recognizable musicians are larger-than-life, their image clearly defined in American pop culture. They’re known as much for their dedication to the blues as they are for their self-designed custom-made guitars. Whether kicking off the MTV generation in 1983 with their groundbreaking videos or continuing to put on world class shows today, ZZ Top are as pioneering now as they ever were, yet still mindful of all who came before them in the glorious longtime tradition of this great music.

Tracy Woody releases EP

Sometimes an artist comes along who makes everyone in the musical world sit up and take notice. Tracy Woody could well be one of those artists.

A multi-talented performer, singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur, Woody is set to burst onto the scene with the incendiary dance floor filler that is ‘Sweat Beat of Love.’ This powerful, emotional, vibrant four-track EP is the announcement of an artist who has big, big things ahead of her.

Beginning her musical journey performing religiously and for friends at weddings over a decade ago, Woody has come a long way, yet still retained that unique, fresh outlook on how to sing, how to perform.
‘Sweat Beat of Love’ marries the almost religious style that informed Woody’s early musical education to electric dance floor beats and a hugely powerful pop vocal. It is a single that will wow dance floors as much as the home listener and will see Woody storm the charts in double quick time. Backed with the equally infectious ‘Your Love’ and two remixes, this EP is tight, life-enhancing and essential music.

Woody says her musical ambition is to inspire people. These songs are the very definition of inspirational. They translate the music religiously into the universal language of the dance floor. They use electronic influences without distilling the beauty of what is a unique voice.

Woody has already garnered praise far and wide – from her home in North Carolina to as far flung lands as Switzerland, people have been drawn to her music. She has been scooping awards and winning radio airplay time for some time.

The buzz around Tracy Woody is already there for all to see. With the release of this EP, that buzz is only going to grow and grow.
