In August (and again in October), Esotouric, the eclectic bus
adventure company whose tours reveal L.A.'s secret history, offers a bus
tour dedicated to the city's greatest detective novelist, Raymond Chandler,
from the downtown streets he roamed as a young oil executive to his uniquely
poisonous portrayal of the city's hustlers, heavies and suckers. The tour
reveals the secret historic city that still breathes under our modern
streets, and offers unexpected insight into the life and work of a beloved
writer and his immortal white knight detective hero Philip Marlowe.

And just to show that Chandler scholarship continues to evolve 52 years
after his death, Esotouric's Raymond Chandler tour features a startling new
theory developed through Esotouric's original research. Get on the bus to
learn all about the idealistic Los Angeles policeman whose one-man crusade
against the evils of his own department is among the most convincing cases
for a real life prototype of the Philip Marlowe character ever proposed. And
you won't hear about him in any of the Chandler biographies, but only on the
Esotouric bus.

For more original Raymond Chandler research uncovered by Esotouric, see the
blog post "Raymond Chandler and the Creamery" about the criminal happenings
the young writer might have witnessed at his first job in Los Angeles, at
the link below.
http://www.esotouric.com/chandlerandthecreamery

And in 2011, Esotouric principals Richard Schave and Kim Cooper took a road
trip to San Diego to attend the moving Valentine's Day ceremony in which the
ashes of Raymond Chandler's wife Cissy (died 1954) were finally placed in
his (died 1959) grave, as both had intended. In keeping with their pledge to
share interesting Los Angeles lore on their tour bus and online, video and
photos from the ceremony have been posted at the Esotouric blog:
http://www.esotouric.com/chandlergrave

ABOUT THE TOUR:

RAYMOND CHANDLER'S LOS ANGELES: IN A LONELY PLACE delves deep into a lost
city that exists in shadowy parallels to contemporary LA. Bungalows. Crime.
Hollywood. Blondes. Vets. Smog. Death. This was Raymond Chandler¹s city,
which resonated from deft and melancholy fits of his writer¹s bow. Join
Esotouric on an exploration of the city that shaped Chandler's fiction, and
that in turn shaped his hard-boiled times, in a four hour tour of downtown,
Hollywood and surrounding environs: Musso & Frank, Union Station, the Hotel
Van Nuys, Paramount Studio¹s gates, and beyond. Through published work,
private correspondence, screenplays and film adaptations, the tour traces
Chandler¹s search for meaning and his anti-hero Philip Marlowe¹s struggle to
not be pigeonholed or give anything less than all he has, which lead them
both down the rabbit hole of isolation, depression, and drink.

Get on the bus for a revealing time travel journey into the literary history
of Los Angeles, and discover the places and people who inspired Raymond
Chandler's timeless novels, screenplays and stories. And as a special treat,
the tour's complementary snack break features a selection of noir-themed
gelato flavors from the creative kitchen of Tai Kim's Scoops, the most
interesting and acclaimed ice cream shop in Los Angeles. Scoops doesn't
announce the featured flavors in advance, but Chandleresque offerings on
past tours have have included Coffee/Jack Daniels, Bacon/Caramel,
Guinness/Chocolate and even Nicotine (made with Nicorette gum)!

Concerts for Kids at the Getty in August

The Getty’s Garden Concerts for Kids series returns this August with a line-up of some of the nation’s most popular children’s musical artists. Families can delight in the imaginative and whimsical tunes of award-winning musicians as they perform on the lawn of the Getty Center’s Central Garden. Best of all, Garden Concerts are free!

“Children’s music is much more than the classic standards parents have grown up with,” explains Laurel Kishi, public programs manager at the J. Paul Getty Museum. “These musicians are driven to create innovative approaches to children’s education and entertainment that the whole family can appreciate.”

On August 4 and 5, see Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players in his only Los Angeles appearance this year. Named the #2 children’s musician by Time Out New York Kids, Roberts returns to the Getty with tunes from his latest Grammy Award-nominated album, Jungle Gym. Giant pounding drums, vintage electric guitars, fanciful time changes, soaring vocals, and elegant French horns conquer the heights of Jungle Gym. NPR raves, "Roberts continues to craft masterpieces in miniature, equivalent to A. A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh or Kevin Henkes's stories for children. Like those books, Roberts's songs are likely to reach across and through generations." Our advice: grab your parents, grandparents, and real and imaginary friends for a perfect summertime playdate.

On August 11 and 12, Randy Kaplan fingerpicks and strums his way through American roots and Delta blues with the ease of an inner tube floating down a lazy river. Randy’s newest CD, Mr. Diddie Wah Diddie, is chock-full of country, blues, and ragtime numbers from the early 20th century, including songs by the likes of Robert Johnson, Blind Boy Fuller, Blind Blake, Muddy Waters, Bessie Smith, Mississippi John Hurt, and many more. Talented singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist David Tobocman and his band join Randy onstage to share some "Very Helpful Songs" to make a feel-good family music jam.

On August 18 and 19, two-time Grammy Award winner and "troubadour extraordinaire" Bill Harley concludes the summer series. Harley is a prolific author and recording artist, using song and story to paint a vibrant and hilarious picture of growing up, school, and family life. Bill's work spans the generation gap with collections such as Monsters in the Bathroom, 50 Ways to Fool Your Mother, and Dad Threw the TV Out the Window, to name a few. Heartfelt and witty, Bill's tales engage kids like no other and send adults on a trip down their own past. Are these stories true? Harley says, "The more I tell them, the truer they get."

Goddess of Pomona

August 11 though September 29, 2012

Opening Reception: August 11, 2012, 3:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Second Saturday Viewing: September 8, 2012, 3:00 pm – 10:00 pm

The dA Center for the Arts Announces Goddess of Pomona Group Exhibition in Collaboration with the Goddess of Pomona Festival

The dA Center for the Arts is proud to present Goddess of Pomona, a group exhibition on display from August 11 through September 29, 2012. In collaboration with the Goddess of Pomona Festival, the public has been invited to submit art pieces that explore the theme of Pomona, the Roman goddess of fruit. The dA will be hosting an opening reception on August 11 from 3:00 to 10:00 p.m. in conjunction with the Pomona Arts Colony Second Saturday Art Walk.

Hosted by the Downtown Pomona Owners' Association (DPOA) and the Pomona Arts Colony Association (PACA), the Goddess of Pomona Festival invites local galleries and businesses to honor the city's namesake by displaying art related to the theme.

As the dA's third open show of the year, Goddess of Pomona explores the community's interpretations of the goddess and part of the city's history. In mythology, Pomona was responsible for the flourishing of fruit trees. The decision to name the city was influenced by the agricultural booms of the late 1800s, as much of Pomona's early economic growth was derived from the success of its citrus and olive industries.

About The dA Center for the Arts: The dA Center for the Arts is a non-profit arts organization operating in the Pomona Arts Colony since 1984. Dedicated to the community, the center serves to provide opportunities to experience, appreciate, and support the art through community art classes, events and exhibits.

City Rain to release album

Like many musical backstories, the story of Philadelphia’s CITY RAIN is one of defeat and ultimate redemption. The big difference here though is that City Rain’s redemption is ongoing… and this time, the band is wielding their most impressive weapon yet: the MONTAGE EP (Stompf Tavern Records / release date: August 28, 2012).

“It was a story of wanting to be noticed and respected for who I was and the gifts I have to offer,” says vocalist/keyboardist/programmer Ben Runyan. “It was and is also about making amends for people I feel like I have wronged or hurt.”

With the release of the Montage EP, however, his primal scream therapy results in this EP of pop/electro/EDM perfection.

Though the music is electronic, the center of City Rain is very human… one filled with emotions, pain and ultimate triumph. The title track of the EP, “Montage,” is born from mortality and growth. A dance pop gem that hearkens the mid-90s Madchester shuffle beat, the song is accented twinkling keyboards intertwined with Jarrett Zerrer’s signature surf guitar.

“I had been sitting on the chorus lyrics since 2009,” Ben explains. “I had come off depression meds a good year earlier. As more and more things started to happen for City Rain, I could also feel my brain healing, my cognition sharpening, my feelings becoming broader. I was developing back into a human. Around the same time, I was visiting my ailing grandfather in Colorado. And as I felt I was ‘coming into my own’ as the lyrics say, my grandfather was dying. I felt like I had become a man he could be proud of. He died within a month after I left back for Philly.”

"Montage" video on Altpress.com
Link: http://goo.gl/rru7N

The heart-rending video which intercuts shots of the band with nostalgic photos and videos from both Ben and Jarrett's childhoods, was exclusively premiered on Altpress.com and can be viewed here:
http://www.altpress.com/aptv/video/video_premiere_city_rain_montage.

Similar epiphanies birth songwriting binges for Ben. The expansive intro of “Big Boys Do Cry” crashes into a cathartic crescendo at midpoint, only to reveal an epic and bombastic pop song at its center, which seems to echo the central story of overcoming despair.

“I was thinking about ending it all,” Ben recalls. “It was essentially a suicide song. There is no way around that and this was my last message.”

Fortunately, he rerouted his emotions and wrote this song instead.

“When I finished the song, it was such a huge relief and a very emotional undertaking. I had taken something supremely negative and ended the song with this really positive and uplifting ‘moving on’ type of feeling.”

From the propulsive anthem “Hearts on Fire” to the lifting Caribbean rhythms of “No Problems” to the soaring playfulness of “I Remember.”

“This EP heads into a poppy direction with a bit of traditional songwriting but still mixed with the electro soul that I have inside of me. I think over the last three years it has been a matter of slowly and surely becoming a better songwriter.”

Making their first national splash with 2011’s I'm Gone EP that combined the emotional yet danceable impact of The Postal Service, New Order and Cults, with a surprising surf guitar twist adding a fascinatingly fresh dimension. Blending surf, New Wave, funk and electro, City Rain was hailed by Deli Magazine as "Band of the Month" and has received adulation and spins on Philly's influential AAA station WXPN 88.5FM. The title track "I'm Gone," an immediately catchy pop song that coasting on a hazy synthpop beat with dreamy surf guitar resonating throughout, spawned a viral video that caught the eye of AOL Spinner who crowned it “Video of the Day.”

Named after the "cleansing and cathartic electric smell after it rains in the city," City Rain is ready to undergo a similar rebirth - from one of Philadelphia's best kept secrets to a formidable national electronic band. Having supported such buzz-heavy and diverse bands as The Dears, School Of Seven Bells, Telefon Tel Aviv, East Hundred, Wilco, Counting Crows, The Lumineers, The War On Drugs, among many others, their buzz is beginning to resonate quite loudly outside of their hometown.

“This record is telling a broad story of where I have been and where I am going. I am venturing out on my own again, and it's scary,” Ben concludes. “Scary awesome."

The Jealous Sound to tour

Seminal LA indie band The Jealous Sound has announced a fall tour with Long Island, NY’s Daytrader. The dates kick off on September 13 in Fullerton, CA and run through October 20.

The band’s latest LP, A Gentle Reminder, was released back in January to widespread acclaim and was their first set of new material since 2003’s Kill Them with Kindness. Made in the Foo Fighters' Studio 606 with John Lousteau producing, A Gentle Reminder features founding member Blair Shehan (who Entertainment Weekly described as an “emo genius” on their “Must-List” earlier this year) working alongside the Foos' Nate Mendel and new drummer Bob Penn.

“We were pleasantly surprised to have the most successful and enjoyable tour of our career this last Spring,” offers Shehan. “Looking forward to playing the old favorites, a couple from A Gentle Reminder that didn’t make the set last tour and a brand new song that we’re very excited about…”

In conjunction with the tour, Rise Records will release a limited edition, split 7” featuring tracks by The Jealous Sound and Daytrader.

"Rise Records is very excited to release this limited edition tour press 7". I'm a huge fan of The Jealous Sound (and of course Daytrader) and I'm honored to release music with them. I personally can't wait until the Portland, OR tour date," says Rise founder Craig Ericson.

"Oh Caitlin" is the first video from Xander Smith's debut solo record Hey San Pedro. Directed by Emmy award winning actor/director Michael A. Goorjian, this video looks the way the record sounds - lo-fi, gentle, and homespun - shot in just two hours outside Smith's apartment under his favorite tree.

The video release coincides with upcoming European tour dates, which take Smith from Los Angeles all the way to Siberia.

Fans and "Kickstarter" supporters from halfway around the world have helped Smith to coordinate these shows and street-team for Hey San Pedro. Montreal's Men Without Hats will soon be taking their timeless performance back on the road in support of their new album Love In The Age of War (out now on Cobraside Records). During 2011's “Dance If You Want” tour, Men Without Hats opened every show with their single “This War.” Today, they are sharing the single, which just premiered on AOL's Spinner, in honor of their upcoming tour dates. The track is an uplifting blend of the band's distinguished synthpop sound, accentuated by Ivan's distinctive baritone croon.

Love In The Age of War marked the band's their first album release in albums 10 years and features 10 original songs written by Ivan Doroschuk. Produced by Dave “Rave” Ogilvie (Skinny Puppy, Marilyn Manson), Love In The Age of War features charismatic front man Ivan (voice & electronics), his brother Colin Doroschuk (vocals), as well as Lou Dawson (vocals & live keyboards), and James Love (guitars). In 2011, Men Without Hats soared back into the scene with their breakout performance at SXSW, followed by an extensive, well-received North American tour.

Since forming in the late 70's, the band released six studio albums – having songs featured on hit TV series such as Glee, The Simpsons, Futurama and Family Guy. Their 1980's hit “The Safety Dance” reached Top 10 in the US, the UK and 25 other countries around the world. Their 1987 hit “Pop Goes The World” reached the top 20 in the US and Canada. In 1983, they picked up a Grammy nomination for Best group.

Joshua Radin to release album and tour

Songwriter/performer Joshua Radin, who has sold more than 1.5 million singles, half a million albums and has over 50 songs placements in film and TV, will release his fourth album UNDERWATER, tomorrow on Mom + Pop Music. On the Today Show last week, Joshua performed "Tomorrow’s Gonna Be Better" from the new album, which co-host Hoda Kotb predicted would be a song "people are going to fall in love with." Tickets go on sale this week for Joshua’s fall tour with A Fine Frenzy. The tour kicks off October 11 in Santa Rosa, and plays in over 26 major markets including October 29 at Best Buy in NYC and November 16 at the Wiltern in Los Angeles. (See dates below.)

Radin wrote or co-wrote all 12 tracks on the album, which was produced by Kevin Augunas (Cold War Kids, The Vandals, and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros) and features guest performances from legendary players such as Benmont Tench (Tom Petty), Jim Keltner (George Harrison, John Lennon, Herbie Hancock), Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Fiona Apple, Beck), string arranger Jimmy Haskell and more. The album was recorded at the storied Studio City studios, the once-ramshackle space that hosted Nirvana’s Nevermind sessions. They captured single takes on analog tape, to give the work a more organic feel.

Radin’s childhood history of ear problems prevented him from ever swimming underwater. He was penning Underwater at his home in Los Angeles in near seclusion when one day, he awoke to the realization that there was inspiration in the Pacific. So he bought state-of-the-art earplugs and took the plunge. "I never realized the silence that could occur when you go underwater," he says. "That was pretty amazing."

He essentially wrote the title track while submerged, capturing the sensation of freedom. That hope continues to trickle through the album in tracks such as the loving "Tomorrow’s Gonna Be Better," the sweeping "Anywhere Your Love Goes" and the gently ambling "Let It Go" (about that time he jumped in his friend’s convertible and high-tailed it up the Coast).

Ballyhoo! on tour and at Shoreline Jam in Long Beach Sept. 1

The reggae/rock band Ballyhoo! will be heading out on a national US tour with California reggae outfit, Tribal Seeds. The tour will officially kick-off on August 31st in Indio, California. Proving themselves yet again as tireless road-warriors, the band will gear up for the Tribal Seeds tour by playing shows along the East Coast beginning August 20th - just two weeks after finishing off their first full run of Van's Warped Tour! Ballyhoo! has also been invited to play Shoreline Jam Festival on September 1st in Long Beach, California with The Wailers and Charm City Music Festival on September 15th in Baltimore, Maryland with headliners Weezer, Flogging Molly and Stephen Marley.

Ballyhoo! kicked-off the summer with a bang, performing on 311's Five-Day Caribbean Cruise and at Bamboozle Festival, with headliners the Foo Fighters and Bon Jovi. The band has been gaining momentum since signing with LAW Records for their Fall 2011 album, Daydreams, which debuted at #1 on the iTunes Reggae Charts and #4 on Amazon. MTV.com predicted that Ballyhoo! would be a band to watch this year, and this foursome has certainly been living up to the hype.

Ballyhoo! has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in rock and reggae including 311, Slightly Stoopid, The Dirty Heads, Pepper, Authority Zero, Toots & The Maytals and Matisyahu.

Lead singer/guitarist Howi Spangler has a reputation for mixing slick lyrics with his smooth but powerful voice and drummer Donald "Big D" Spangler lays out the hard-hitting beats, which are underlined by JR Gregory's funky and witty bass lines. Scott Vandrey (aka DJ Blaze) rounds it out on the turntables and keys.

Ballyhoo!'s relaxed sound mixed with the band's energetic performance style has been gaining a reputation on the national rock radio scene as well. Highlights of Ballyhoo!'s summer radio play include 100+ spins per week on Radio 104.5 in Philadelphia, Star 101.9 in Honolulu and on syndicated rock giant, Sirius Faction.

Jason Cruz & Howl releases debut EP

Americana/Folk/Alt-Country quartet JASON CRUZ AND HOWL is releasing its debut EP LoungeCore on Friday July 27, 2012 via Echotone Records. “I released this on my own label because I’ve been doing this long enough to understand the business,” comments the Strung Out frontman Jason Cruz about his decision to go DIY for his first solo outing. “This is 2012 and ANYTHING is possible in this sometimes upside down business. The young naĂŻve musician has to grow up and go away. Why not take control and do things your own way? If you use your imagination and be patient and hard working, there are no limits.”

A departure from the punk sensibilities that his other band Strung Out embraces, LoungeCore thrusts Cruz into a more organic and Americana-based unit. “Why start another band that sounds the same as what you’re already doing,” he explains. “Strung Out has fulfilled a big part of me, but at the same time left a big creative void. With this project both bands will now be stronger. Anyone that knows anything about me knows I’m always going to push for the path less traveled and that to me is what makes both bands unique.”

Filled with songs that harken dusty spaghetti westerns (“Blue Jesus”), outlaw punk ("When They Finally Get Me”) and driving Americana (“The Lonesome Grave of Celia Browne”), LoungeCore is a whole different side of Cruz. “This record is going to trip people out because it doesn’t sound like anything people would expect from me, so in a way it’s kind of an outlaw record”, laughs Cruz. “When I say that Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, or George Jones fueled the last Strung Out album, this all makes sense. Expanding your musical scope can only strengthen the integrity of your foundation and keep you original.”

Recognizing the strength and honesty of this EP, American Songwriter premiered the opening track “Blue Jesus”, which can be heard here: http://www.americansongwriter.com/2012/07/song-premiere-jason-cruz-and-the-howl-blue-jesus/.

In celebration of release day, RCRD_LBL is featuring the song about Charles Manson’s trippy hangout spot “Spahn Ranch” as a free download which can be downloaded here: http://rcrdlbl.com/2012/07/27/download_jason_cruz_and_the_howl_spahn_ranch.

“Along with myself, everyone in the band has come from a punk background,” says Cruz about his backing band Howl. “We all have very artistic sensibilities and believe in pushing boundaries. Jason Cruz And Howl features lead vocalist Jason Cruz of Strung Out (guitar, vocals), Buddy Darling of The Darlings (guitar, vocals), Chris Stein of Saccharine Trust (bass), and Nick DiBiasi of Neo Geo (drums). The band is currently planning a Fall tour.

Each week following the winners will be paired head-to-head with another winning cocktail until, on September 27th, the four finalists will be matched in a live tasting at Paseo Colorado to determine Pasadena’s favorite cocktail. Voting in the cocktail bracket challenge goes live on Wednesday, August 15th.

The Julia Child Pasadena Cocktail Party on August 15th will take place in restaurants all over Pasadena, culminating in a citywide happy birthday toast at 7:00pm. Patrons will be encouraged to dress for a 1950s, 1960s or 1970s era cocktail party. Come out and celebrate the pioneer of Pasadena’s culinary claim to fame. Toro Sushi Bar Lounge and 300 Pasadena will host Julia Child costume contests with winners receiving delicious and fun prizes.

Agent Ribbons to release new album

Agent Ribbons isn't just a band--it's a tree house club of post-feminist dreamers trying to find their place in the scheme of things, like a hand-sewn and lovingly-crafted garment in a modern, disposable world. Listening to everything from Eartha Kitt to the Velvet Underground and taking notes from bands like the Shaggs, the Boswell Sisters and the Zombies, they miraculously reconcile seemingly-unrelated genres, sounding something like Girls in the Garage doing the Three Penny Opera. Waxing sentimental over the eerie beauty of all things lost to time, the emphasis is undoubtedly in the lyrics, which favor clever turns of phrase and occasional humor, but never at the expense of the melodic integrity of their catchy, memorable songs.

Originally hailing from the shanty-Victorian streets of downtown Sacramento, Agent Ribbons moved to Austin, TX in 2010, their new home base when they aren't traveling the world and jamming econo. After a brief expansion to a 3 piece for the recording of their second album that year, the band quickly returned to their original two-piece lineup of Natalie Ribbons: Guitar & Vocals and Lauren Ribbons: Drums & Vocals. All the better to catch crowds off-guard with their live rawness, with the band bringing both an honest minimalism and unapologetic theatricality to their live shows.

Since 2007 and the self-release of their first album, On Time Travel and Romance, the band has toured the U.S. more times than they can remember. Some of those tours were with big national acts like Camera Obscura, Cake, Detroit Cobras and Girl in a Coma, and the rest were done vigilante-style in a Chevy Astro. And despite having been banned in the UK in 2008, they have an ever-increasing presence in Europe with numerous tours and releases via Spain's Acuarela Discos label under their belts.

The release of their second full length, Chateau Crone via Oakland's Antenna Farm records in late 2010 was a breakthrough for Agent Ribbons. Baroque string arrangements ran up against a garage pop sensibility for a cleverly melodic and unique sound that was praised by Vice for it's "impeccable taste" and by NPR as "Feel-good garage rock." Bust magazine gushed that "Agent Ribbons is the band of your dreams...a truckload of genius harmonies and a lead singer with a voice that could call down the ghost of Johnny Ray." 2011 saw numerous high-profile TV and movie placements for songs from the album, including the shows Vampire Diaries, Revenge, and Cougartown.

Flash forward to 2012, and the band has a new EP, Let Them Talk, as a teaser to a third full-length LP, coming in 2013. Let Them Talk is a return to the band's rawer early recordings, with classic Spector-esque stacked girl-group harmonies balancing on top of a raucous rock foundation. Standout track Family Haircut rides a complex and dark minor key melody before riding out on a triumphant harmony line, while the nonchalant opening line of Let Them Talk ("I wanted to keep your baby but I couldn't look away from the thing that held my gaze") shows the band hasn't lost their taste for black humor.

Let Them Talk releases on September 11th 2012 via Antenna Farm Records as a 5 song digital EP and limited run 3 song 7" featuring a bonus cut not on the digital version. Cassette fans can also find the songs via Portland's Cassingle And Loving It, who are releasing the EP under the title Family Haircut in an instantly collectable run of 300 cassettes.

Reel Big Fish to release album and on tour

On July 31st, 2012 Reel Big Fish release their 7th studio album, Candy Coated Fury (Rock Ridge Music), an inspired and infectiously catchy return to the hyperkinetic ska and biting wit of the band’s beloved early albums. “This album is a lot like our first two albums. It's got a lot of the same intensity, frantic energy in the music, and the same sarcastic sense of humor. I think these are the fastest songs we've done since those albums,” Aaron Barrett, founding vocalist, guitarist, and principal songwriter says. “We're finally just doing what Reel Big Fish does best, and that's what we did on those first two albums.”

The Huntington Beach, California ska band first gained mainstream recognition in 1997 with the high-velocity hooks and barbed humor of the hit "Sell Out.” That song became a staple of 1990s modern rock radio and a MTV favorite, propelling RBF’s sophomore album, Turn the Radio Off (Mojo Records, 1996), up the Top 100 and onto gold sales status. RBF also garnered widespread exposure appearing as the halftime band in the 1998 David Zucker comedy BASEketball. Alongside contemporaries like No Doubt, Sublime, Goldfinger, and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, RBF was at the vanguard of the third wave of ska, reinvigorating the genre by incorporating spastic live shows, playfully puerile humor, ironic covers, and metallic shards into the mix.

“Candy coated fury pretty much describes what Reel Big Fish does,” Barrett says of the significance of the new album’s title. “It’s hateful, mean, sarcastic, and, sometimes sad lyrics, over happy, wacky, silly, joyous, fast music that makes you want to dance. This album is mostly love songs, but bitter, angry, hateful love songs. Just about everybody knows what it's like to be in a bad relationship. These songs could be sung by a 15 year old about his first love-gone-wrong, or by a 55 year old about a bitter divorce after 30 years. They’re bad-relationship songs that everybody can relate to.”

Candy Coated Fury is Reel Big Fish’s first album of newly recorded original material in five years. Overall, it’s the seventh in the band’s twenty year history, and it feels as vital and vitriolic as RBF’s foundational releases. The record opens with the huge sing-along vocal, balmy horns, and hyperactive ska groove of “Everyone Else Is An Asshole.” The track is an exceptional distillation of Reel Big Fish’s classic euphorically-juvenile ska punk. The stately arena riffs in “I Dare You To Break My Heart” reference cock rock, new wave, and soul without sacrificing one iota of RBF’s signature simmering skank.

“I listen to the Darkness a lot; it was only a matter of time till I wrote a song like this! I can't really sing as high as that guy so this song sounds more like Kiss, if Kiss was a Motown band that played ska,” Barrett says, detailing the song’s diverse stylistic touchstones.

The anthemic “I Know You Too Well To Like You Anymore” features some of Barrett’s finest cutely cruel lyrics. “I think that is an amazing bad-relationship song,” he laughs. “I really captured the hateful love of two people who were once madly in love, but have been together so long, they can't stand the sight of each other anymore but still say ‘they drive me crazy, and I hate this and this about them, but I love them.’" No RBF album would be complete without playfully irreverent 1980s covers. The band rounds things out ska-ifying the Wonderstuff’s “Don’t Let Me Down Gently” and When In Rome’s “The Promise.”

In 1995 Reel Big Fish recorded and self-released its debut album, Everything Sucks. The record became a word-of-mouth hit in ska, punk, and college circles, which gave the band enough leverage to sign with the indie label Mojo Records. The label’s president, Jay Rifkin, and former Oingo Boingo bassist, John Avila, produced RBF’s sophomore career-making album Turn the Radio Off. The band hit the road and, over the years, have built a rabid cult-like fanbase through touring and releasing modern underground classics like Why Do They Rock So Hard (Mojo 1998), the gloriously tongue-in-cheek covers album Fame, Fortune and Fornication(Rock Ridge Music 2009), and SKAcoustic (Rock Ridge Music 2011), a 22-song collection of re-recorded hits and classic fan favorites done acoustically.

Reel Big Fish continues to tour non-stop, playing over 250 shows a year to thousands of loyal fans all over the world, gaining more and more underground popularity as the ska scene continues to flourish. “There are thousands of ska bands and ska fans all over the world. Everywhere we go we meet so many people that are just getting into ska and starting bands. It’s very flattering to hear that we are one of the bands that have inspired them. As a ska band that has been around for 20 years, it's amazing to see that we're still packing concert venues all over the world. We feel very lucky to still be able to be doing what we're doing after all this time.”

Flights & Sounds Summer Festival in Irvive kicks off Aug. 2

The Orange County Great Park, in association with Irvine Barclay Theatre, launches the fifth annual Flights & Sounds Summer Festival on Thursday, August 2 with an unforgettable up-tempo Latin Music Weekend featuring east LA rock, a Salsa dance party and Grammy Award-winning Latin jazz. The Latin Music Weekend kicks off the five-week Flights & Sounds Summer Festival, which offers music lovers of all ages a musical tour around the world, set in three unique venues at the Great Park.

Visitors can get an early start to this exciting weekend on Thursday, August 2 when Chicano-folk rock meets pan-Latin rhythms with La Santa Cecilia performing in the Palm Court Arts Complex. La Santa Cecilia is a Los Angeles-based six-member band that creatively combines up-tempo South American rhythms like Cumbia and Bossa Nova with the nostalgic Bolero and passionate Tango, blending in Afro-Cuban percussion, rock and jazz to bring about a mix that defies any particular musical genre.

On Friday, August 3, swing your hips at a sensational salsa dance party featuring La Sirena y Orquesta Mar de Ashe on the Dance Concourse. This 12-piece orchestra led by vocalist La Sirena and trombone virtuoso Mike Daigeau, presents a delicious, eclectic variety of danceable Salsa, Latin Jazz, Son, Cumbia, Cha Cha, Bachata, Merengue and Bolero. Come early at 7:45 p.m. to get salsa dance instruction from Atomic Ballroom.

The Latin Music Weekend culminates on the evening of Saturday, August 4 on the Runway Stage with headliner and Grammy Award-winning Latin jazz bandleader Poncho Sanchez and his Latin Jazz Band, stirring up a fiery stew of jazz, gritty soul music and infectious melodies and rhythms from a variety of Latin American and South American sources for more than three decades. Poncho Sanchez will be joined on stage by trumpeter Christian Scott and together they will perform Cubano Be Cubano Bop, a program celebrating the Latin jazz collaboration of Bebop legend Dizzy Gillespie and Cubanconguero Chano Pozo.

"The annual Flights & Sounds Summer Festival is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to enjoy world-class music under the stars," said Beth Krom, Chair, Orange County Great Park Corporation. "This will be our most exciting summer yet, with five world-themed weekends that will take visitors on a musical tour around the globe with dancers and musicians from North America, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and the British Isles."

Unforgettable Experience in Unique Venues

Beyond the varied and rich musical line up, the Great Park Flights & Sounds Summer Festival provides a unique setting that adds to the visitor experience. The musical performances take place in three specially-designed iconic venues at the Great Park.

New this year, the Palm Court Arts Complex venue will feature a place to mix and mingle under 54 illuminated Canary Island Palm Trees delivering an outdoor club-like setting unequaled in Orange County.

The Runway Stage venue will showcase the Festival headliners and offers concert seating and spacious lawns for those bringing their blankets and chairs.

LA Jewish Symphony anniversary concert Aug. 26

The Los Angeles Jewish Symphony (LAJS) is celebrating its 18th, or Chai, Anniversary with a special performance on Sunday, August 26 at 7:30pm at the Ford Amphitheatre with a program entitled “CHAIlights– Celebrating 18 years of Jewish Music”.

The eclectic program features three longtime orchestra members and soloists—Concertmaster Mark Kashper, Principal Cellist Barry Gold, and Principal Clarinetist and arranger Zinovy Goro—in music that reflects the two main streams of Jewish culture and heritage, Ashkenazic and Sephardic. Other highlights will include the U.S. premiere of "Klezmopolitan Suite,” written by Niki Reiser, a former member of the European klezmer group “Kol Simcha”; popular Jewish artist Sam Glaser will join with the newly formed Jewish Community Children's Choir, under the direction of Dr. Michelle Willner; and surprise guest artists representing LAJS’ 18-year history. Each of the pieces to be performed in the show were written by composers who were inspired by the yiddishkayt music of the Hassidic, Klezmer, and Cantorial traditions.

A Chai anniversary has its roots in the Hebrew word for “life,” which is Chai, with its Hebrew letters adding up to the number 18. For this reason, the number 18 is a spiritual number in Judaism and represents a time to reflect, remember, and celebrate.

End o' week musings

Some weeks seem longer than others and after a little thought (and a cup of coffee and half a bar of chocolate) I've decided that this week is one of the longest ever. Not because I was anxious over some grand adventure, but rather because almost every day was overstuffed with, well, stuff.

Friday I went to the Troubadour in West Hollywood to see Flytraps, The Muffs and The Zeros- two classic punk bands and one newbie. It was a good show, read my review
http://www.dailynews.com/lalife/ci_21158563/troubadour-show-proves-timeliness-zeros-reunion for more.

On Saturday I went to the Hawaiian Festival in Lawndale with my friend Linda. We wore our flowered dresses and sunhats and toted our lawnchairs. It was in a very open park with little shade, so we stayed as long as we could bear the heat. We nibbled on shaved ices as we watched dance performances to mostly live music and wandered through the vendor booths.

One of the dance groups was amazing-- it consisted of young men and women doing warrior choreographies complete with chanting. They looked great and moved very well. I wanted to join them!

Early afternoon Linda and I had enough sun and heat, so we left to have lunch at King's Hawaiian in Torrance. I had macadamia nut crusted chicken, while Linda had Imperial chicken and we shared a plate of spam sushi. We both had plenty of food to take home for another meal, as the portions were ample and the prices were decent. The food was plated beautifully and was quite yummy! I'll go there again for sure.

Sunday I went to the Pacific Asia Museum http://www.pacificasiamuseum.org/ to hear "Little Red Guard" author Wenguang Huang speak. He is an American journalist, who covered China and his book is about his life and family when he was growing up in China. Huang was funny and engaging, as well as enlightening. I particularly liked his story about going back to visit his father's grave.

Huang was going to just leave a copy of "Little Red Guard" on his father's grave, but his sister said he had to burn it so that dad could read it (it didn't matter that the book is in English and dad only knew Chinese). Huang borrowed a lighter from someone and tried and tried to light the book on fire. Finally a gust of wind blew and helped him. After the book turned to ashes, a bird landed in a nearby tree and began to sing. Huang stated that he is not superstitious, but he felt it was a sign of his father's approval. ... What a beautiful story!

I had several interviews this week, with two focused on the upcoming Doo Dah exhibit at the Pasadena Museum of History http://www.pasadenahistory.org/ It opens in less than three weeks!! I can't wait, as I'll be among those honored with a place in Pasadena history, along with the Royal Pup Atticus.

Last night my newspaper group had a huge event at the Rose Bowl. Employees were invited for a State of LANG talk, along with refreshments. When we arrived, we noticed lots of tables set out and it was pretty elegant for a football stadium. The evening included a meeting with talks by different upper management people and special guest Luc Robitaille of the L.A. Kings, a buffet dinner and a raffle. I won a wine tasting at Azo Vino in Covina. It was a nice event and very good for company morale. I hope everyone had a good time.

Lots more writing and interviews on tap for next week, but I'm not sure what other adventures will find me....

In rotation this week: Joan Baez, Rob Zombie, Sleaze Freaks, Beat Union and Dio.

Photos we got 'em: A cute pet pic off the web and photos of my friend Joanne's dog Colonel tired but determined to do his agility class and me and Atticus on our big Doo Dah Parade day, both by Marlyn Woo.

Thought o' the week: Today marks one year since Atticus' passing. For those unacquainted, Atticus was my Jack Russell terrier and "a little dog in search of big adventure." We did a lot together- camping, hiking, boogie boarding and he sat by my side when I reigned over the 31st Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade. Today, rather than feeling sad, I plan to toast the little guy and feel joyous and thankful for the short time he was in my life (is it ever long enough?).

I ask you to also take a few minutes today to remember someone - human or animal - in your life who made it better just by being there. Think of that most special moment, whether it was their support or just sharing a good laugh, that always comes to mind when you hear their name or see their photo. Do it for yourself, do it for Atticus.

I so miss my little guy... I'd like to think that somewhere Atticus is looking down on me and wagging his tail.

Keep on rockin'
