Rattle magazine will gather a selection of performers from around the world for a series of poetry readings beginning Sunday, August 5th, and continuing every first Sunday through the fall. The events celebrate the Summer 2012 issue.
Releasing in June, 2012, issue #37 features a tribute to poets working in Law Enforcement, including contributions from fourteen police officers, detectives, and federal agents who split their time fighting crime and penning lines. One might not expect any similarity between policing and poetry, but with reams of paperwork, plenty of drama, and a need for attention to fine detail, poets and cops actually have much in common. These cops tell tales from the beat—with a beat.
In the inaugural reading, Drug Enforcement Agent Jesse Fourmy (Los Angeles, CA) shares the stage with Alejandro Escudé (Los Angeles, CA) and Josh Rathkamp (Mesa, AZ). Future readers this fall will include Police Officers Barbara Ann Carle (Friendswood, TX), Sarah Cortez (Houston, TX), Betty Davis (Norfolk, VA), and Suzanne Kessler (Bellevue, NE), 2010 Rattle Poetry Prize Winner Lynne Knight (San Francisco, CA), and Janice Soderling (Boxholm, Sweden).
WHO: Founded in 1994 by Alan Fox, Rattle magazine operates under the simple premise that it doesn’t take a scholar to be moved by the written word—poetry is for everyone. That principal has guided Rattle through 37 issues, publishing the poetry of lawyers, landscapers, doctors and prisoners right alongside the stars of modern literature. The result is one of the most enjoyable and eclectic literary journals in the country, and one of the most-read. Operating outside of poetry’s mainstream, Rattle often seeks out work by groups of poets that the academics have yet to embrace—genres like visual and slam poetry that don’t conform to traditional boundaries. Other issues gather together poets of similar racial or vocational backgrounds, to give their experiences a collective and interactive voice, and to provide a social context for individual works of art.
