It's Memorial Day weekend, so Cinespia is screening two films to help kick off the unofficial start of summer. Cinespia's 10th season features the best films shown in the last 10 years, including Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958), screening Saturday, May 28; and in a Cinespia debut, Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein (1974) screens Sunday, May 29. Cinespia also continues to bring world-class DJs to spin before and after the films. Saturday night, it's DJ David Holmes, with DJ Howie Pyro manning the decks on Sunday night. Bring blankets, drinks, and picnic dinners for this special Memorial Day program under the stars.
May 28: Vertigo (1958)
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, the psychological suspense drama Vertigo stars Jimmy Stewart as John "Scottie" Ferguson, a retired police detective who's hired to follow a mysterious woman played by the quintessential icy blonde, Kim Novak. His fear of heights, coupled with a mounting attraction for his subject, leads to the main character's own form of vertigo, visually represented through the sharp bluffs, sweeping vistas, and precipitous bridges of the San Francisco Bay area. In The Cinema According to Alfred Hitchcock by François Truffaut (1967), Hitchcock cited Vertigo as one of his favorite films. Vertigo also recently earned the number-one spot in the American Film Institute's 10 Top 10 in Mystery.

May 29: Young Frankenstein (1974)
Comic genius Gene Wilder plays the descendant of the fabled Dr. Victor Frankenstein in Mel Brooks' critically acclaimed tribute to the horror film genre, Young Frankenstein. Shot in black and white, the film parodies early adaptations of Mary Shelley's eponymous 1818 novel, and features many of the props that appeared in Universal Pictures' pre-code production from 1931. The supporting cast includes a number of Mel Brooks regulars such as Marty Feldman, Madeline Kahn, and Cloris Leachman. Written by Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder, the film's screenplay was nominated for an Academy Award. Young Frankenstein is also number 13 on AFI's 100 Funniest American Movies of All Time.
