Getty family events start in June

The whole family can enjoy an artistic summer at the Getty, with stepped-up schedules of free family-focused activities from June to September at both the Getty Center and the Getty Villa. Families can attend a variety of concerts, a festival, tours and hands-on workshops. Best of all, admission to both sites and all the activities is free.



Getty Center

At the Getty Center, families can kick-off summertime with a Family Festival on Saturday, June 9 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Delve into the world of celebrity, image, photography, and Los Angeles at this free, daylong family festival inspired by the exhibitions Herb Ritts: L.A. Style and Portraits of Renown: Photography and the Cult of Celebrity. Kids can design a magazine cover with a photo of themselves as the featured celebrity and learn how to strike a pose by dancing to the sounds of Los Angeles.

Throughout the summer, the Center will offer its Family Art Lab, with two fun themes—Fabulous Festivities, where families can capture the energy and excitement of celebrations, and Sculpted Surfaces, where one sculptor’s nine-foot tall vase teeming with bugs, snails, feathers and more can become an inspiration for creating a decorative sculptural scene. Fabulous Festivities will take place on weekends from June 16–July 22 and Sculpted Surfaces will also be on weekends from July 28–September 2, both from 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.

Families can also join Family Art Stops and get up-close and personal with a single work of art in a half-hour gallery experience offered on weekends June 23–September 2, at 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Art Adventures for Families is a one-hour, fun- and activity-filled gallery experience offered Tuesday–Friday from June 19–August 31, at 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

In August, the Getty Center’s Central Garden fills with music on weekends from 4:00–5:30 p.m. with Garden Concerts for Kids, free performances by some of the best children’s music performers around. Musicians this year include Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players, Randy Kaplan with David Tobocman, and Bill Harley.

Finally, don’t miss the Family Room, open all day long for drop-in, hands-on activities highlighting the Getty Center’s collection, GettyGuide® family audio tours on iPod Touches, and Family Art Detective Cards.



Getty Villa

At the Getty Villa, embark on an Art Odyssey for Families, Wednesdays–Fridays, June 13–August 31, 2012 at 12:00p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. This 45-minute journey through the galleries is a fun, activity-filled experience for children and adults to enjoy together. Additionally, Artquest! offers “Mummy Magic” Saturdays and Sundays, June 16–September 2 and Monday, September 3, 11:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Families can see a demonstration of how mummies were made in ancient Egypt, meet the Getty’s real mummy, Herakleides, and make a mummy model of their own.

The Villa also offers the GettyGuide® Family Audio Tour on iPod Touches, self-guided Family Art Detective Cards and Be a Getty Villa Voyager. The Family Forum is open all day for drop-in, hands-on play and engagement for young and old.

Visiting the Getty Center

The Getty Center is open Tuesday through Friday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. It is closed Monday and major holidays. Admission to the Getty Center is always free. Parking is $15 per car, but reduced to $10 after 5 p.m. on Saturdays and for evening events throughout the week. No reservation is required for parking or general admission. Reservations are required for event seating and groups of 15 or more. Visiting the Getty Villa

The Getty Villa is open Wednesday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is closed Tuesday and major holidays. Admission to the Getty Villa is always free. A ticket is required for admission.
