When your business model is taking natives (and a few savvy tourists) deep inside the dark and secret history of their own city, the stakes are especially high come Halloween. For Esotouric's first two Octobers, the bus adventure company took to the road with Crimebo the Clown on a grisly tour of Hollywood crime scenes. But with Crimebo playing San Francisco this year, Esotouric's fans demanded fresh Halloween entertainment.

On Saturday, October 31, a select crew of urban explorers will join Esotouric and their friend Maja D'Aoust, the White Witch of Los Angeles, for MAJA'S MYSTERIES, a metaphysical journey into history, faith and all kinds of magic in the Southland, with in-depth visits to some of the city's most compelling and seldom-seen spiritual sites.

Departing from Downtown's landmark Clifton's Cafeteria, a fanciful 1930s dining environment that looks like a redwood forest, the tour includes guided tours of three fascinating spiritual sites of similar vintage. At each site, Maja will introduce her passengers to members of the faith, lead a tour of the location, and put the group's history and beliefs into context in the histories of religion and Los Angeles.

Stop #1 is the Star Sapphire Lodge in La Crescenta, the local center of the Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O), the esoteric fraternal organization and religion that, under the leadership of Aleister Crowley in the early 20th Century, was rededicated to the Law of Thelema, with its twin directives "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law" and "Love is the law, love under will." Discover the fascinating connections between the O.T.O. and manned spaceflight and how English ideas bloomed in the California sun.

Stop #2 is The Gnostic Society of Glendale (established 1928), where for more than 40 years our host Dr. Stephan A. Hoeller, the Bishop of the Ecclesia Gnostica and senior holder of the English Gnostic Transmission in America, has given Friday evening lectures exploring Gnosticism (the secret knowledge of the pre- and early-Christian world) as living religious practice.

Stop #3 is Downtown L.A.'s landmark 1927 Theosophy Hall, which is simultaneously an exquisite architectural time capsule and a thriving center for spiritual study, where all are welcome to explore the wisdom of the ages in leaderless gatherings for which no payment is ever asked.

The tour then returns to Clifton's, where passengers can mingle, snack on retro dessert selections or an early supper, and discuss their experiences on the outskirts of faith.

Tour host Maja D'Aoust says, "The mystery of magic in all its forms lives and breathes in us from the depths of our blood to the tips of our souls. From the Shamans of old to the modern day quantum physicists, the effect of our sheer will on the material world makes up a large part of what defines us as a species. Impacting reality with our consciousness, and conversely, reality's impact upon our consciousness lies at the base of every kind of magic from sympathetic voodoo to thaumaturgy. Making things happen with your mind, whether bringing the rain, healing a disease, invoking a God or prestidigitating an illusion, the art of conscious change is the very heart of the magical mystery of living."

Join us on the MAJA'S MYSTERIES tour for a one-of-a-kind Halloween adventure through the looking glass, and beyond. And get a free, sneak peek at Maja's tour at 5:30pm on October 8, when as part of the Downtown L.A. Art Walk's official Salon series, she leads a discussion of Prestidigitation (stage magic, which has surprising connections to spiritual magic) upstairs at Clifton's Cafeteria.
