Starting today, NPR Music gets into the groove with an advance stream of songs from pop-music icon Madonna’s new greatest-hits collection, Celebration, one week ahead of its official release. NPR hosts, reporters and bloggers selected nearly a dozen tracks personally and also offer commentary on why they cherish each one. Their (sometimes surprising) picks are available for free, on-demand listening now through September 29 at NPR.org/music.
The album preview features first listens to remastered versions of classic Madonna songs and two brand-new collaborations: the title track “Celebration,” co-produced by Madonna and Paul Oakenfold, and "Revolver,” featuring Lil' Wayne. Each song is accompanied by anecdotes and reflections from NPR's resident Madonna fans, including Monitor Mix blogger Carrie Brownstein, All Songs Considered producer Robin Hilton, weekend All Things Considered host Guy Raz and justice correspondent Ari Shapiro.
Billed as the ultimate Madonna compilation, Celebration covers the expanse of Madonna’s almost three-decades-long career. All 36 songs on the album – from “Everybody” to “Express Yourself,” and from “Vogue” to “4 Minutes” – were chosen by Madonna and her fans, and present newly remastered versions of many of her Top 10 hits. Celebration is a true retrospective of the Grammy-winning singer, writer and producer's legacy to date, showcasing the talent that has earned her seven No. 1 albums, more than 12 No. 1 singles and a record-breaking 39 No. 1 singles on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Songs Chart.
