In early 2007, neo-psychedelic pop band The Apples in Stereo returned to the studio after a five-year hiatus to record New Magnetic Wonder. The band first emerged in the early 1990s as part of the Elephant 6 Collective; the collective has since disbanded, making The Apples in Stereo’s return to the music scene even more surprising. NPR newsmagazine Day to Day reviewed the release in February 2007: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=7217587

Brooklyn indie group Bishop Allen released its second full-length album The Broken String in the summer of 2007. The band also has 12 EPs to its name – they recorded and released one a month in 2006. Bishop Allen opens for producer and songwriter John Vanderslice; NPR’s Bob Boilen describes Vanderslice’s music as “delicate and dark songs carefully crafted with creaking keyboards, buzzing guitars and plenty of assorted drums.”

Rilo Kiley’s debut, 2004’s More Adventurous, received critical acclaim for its “rock storytelling” and the smart, sweet vocals of lead singer (and former child actress) Jenny Lewis. The L.A.-based quartet is touring around their sophomore release Under the Blacklight. It’s usually a surprise who’ll turn up on stage with Animal Collective, a group of experimental musicians from Baltimore whose members include Avey Tare (David Portner); Panda Bear (Noah Lennox); Deakin (Josh Dibb); and Geologist (Brian Weitz). NPR’s Bob Boilen describes the group as having an “infectious spirit,” as evident on their new album Strawberry Jam.

Austin-based band Okkervil River formed in the late 1990s and takes its name from, of all places, a short story by Leo Tolstoy’s great grand-niece. Singer and songwriter Will Sheff says the group’s new release The Stage Names was produced to “give the listener a kind of listening pleasure.” Hear Sheff in an interview with NPR’s Debbie Elliot on All Things Considered: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=14084600

NPR Music’s hit audio webcasts, produced by the popular music program All Songs Considered, launched in January 2005 and have featured more than 120 live events to date. The concerts have showcased an eclectic group of performers, including Björk, The Decemberists, The Arcade Fire, Nellie McKay, The White Stripes, The Black Keys, Ray Lamontagne, James Brown, Iggy Pop and the Stooges and Lucinda Williams, among many others.
