Multi-platinum Island Records group Fall Out Boy took home their third consecutive Moonman at this week’s annual MTV VMAs at the Palms in Las Vegas, winning the coveted Best Group award, and doing double duty as house band at their VMA Fantasy Suite.
Fall Out Boy’s “Friends and Enemies” VMA suite was THE place to be during the two-hour bash, as they interspersed their televised live performances (ranging from “Sugar, We’re Going Down,” “Thnks fr th Mmrs,” “The Carpal Tunnel Of Love,” and “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race,” featuring Lil Wayne, to covers of Michael Jackson’s “Beat It,” “Top Gun Theme,” and Akon’s “Don’t Matter”), with a guest appearance by fellow Island Def Jam artist and two-time VMA winner Rihanna (backing her on her single, “Shut Up and Drive”), plus drop-ins from NE-YO, Panic! At the Disco, Cobra Starship, and Gym Class Heroes – who join FOB on their upcoming “The Young Wild Things Tour,” opening October 18th in Columbus, Ohio (please see tour dates below).
As Fall Out Boy’s RIAA platinum new album INFINITY ON HIGH moves into its 31st week on the Billboard 200 album chart (after debuting at #1), the fourth single is getting off to a fast start: “I’m Like a Lawyer with the Way I’m Always Trying To Get You Off (Me & You)” was one of the most added songs at the Top 40 radio format when it impacted this past week. “I’m Like a Lawyer…(Me & You)” follows up “The Take Over, The Breaks Over,” “Thnks fr th Mmrs,” and “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race” – all three of which went to #1 on MTV’s TRL video countdown.
Fall Out Boy traveled to Africa for the first time in July, to film the video in Uganda for “I’m Like a Lawyer…(Me & You)” with director Allen Ferguson, in partnership with the non-profit organization Invisible Children. The organization is dedicated to curbing the problem of children forced to flee their homes at night, to find shelter miles away in hospitals or bus parks, in order to escape being abducted and pressed into service as child soldiers in the rebel LRA (Lord’s Resistance Army).
The video for “I’m Like a Lawyer…(Me & You)” will make its exclusive premiere on AOL this Thursday, September 13th, and will then be available to all outlets beginning the next day. Also on Thursday, the band will stop by MTV’s TRL studio on Times Square to discuss their VMA win and the making of the new video. The following day has been officially named “Fall Out Boy Friday” by the FUSE network; topped off by the band’s performance of “I’m Like a Lawyer…(Me & You)” on FUSE’s one-hour show “The Sauce,” which will be entirely devoted to FOB. In addition, Fall Out Boy will make their very first appearance Wednesday, September 12th, on ABC’s Live with Regis & Kelly, where they will perform the song live and discuss the new video.
While in Africa, Fall Out Boy traveled to South Africa for a sold-out-in-advance performance to over 18,000 fans at the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg. They became the first U.S. band to perform on the popular young adult show “The Wildroom,” and wrapped up the trip with a visit to Sun City for a safari that was filmed as well. Prior to the African journey they headlined the 42-city Honda Civic Tour of North America from April through June, drew the NBC’s Today Show’s biggest outdoor audience ever for their live performance outside on the Plaza, and then appeared at Al Gore’s prestigious Live Earth Festival at Giants Stadium in New Jersey on July 7th, alongside Bon Jovi, Kanye West, Madonna, and other top acts.
INFINITY ON HIGH is the follow-up to From Under The Cork Tree, Fall Out Boy’s Island debut of May 2005, which spent 72 weeks on the Billboard 200 albums chart and has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide. Chicago’s Fall Out Boy – Patrick Stump (vocals/guitar), Pete Wentz (bass), Joe Trohman (guitar), and Andy Hurley (drums) – won the coveted MTV2 Award in 2005 (for their first Island single, “Sugar, We’re Going Down”), then won a second consecutive Moonman when “Dance, Dance” took 2006’s MTV VMA Viewers Choice Award. Since their first major market headlining North American arena tour in spring 2006, they have appeared on the covers of Rolling Stone, Spin, Blender, and Alternative Press and have performed on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and Late Night with Conan O’Brien, CBS’s The Late Show with David Letterman, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, and more.
