CINCO DE MAYO CELEBRATION with
JEREMY SOLE (KCRW) doing a VERY special Mexican Independence Day Celebration 5+ hour set with live guests!!!

Chicago-born Jeremy Sole has been making beats since the MPC60, deejaying since rotary crossfaders were the standard, and playing clubs since he was too young to (legally) get in. As a teenager, Sole's loft parties were a culture clash during the birth of Hip Hop and House music. He matured as a turntablist in Jazz, Dub and experimental hybrid bands. Jeremy's upbringing was seeped in the rich Chicago history of Blues, Jazz, Disco and Funk - and he reveled in that sacred space where they all blend together. As a kid he spent many nights in the alleys behind blues clubs listening through the air vents, before heading downtown to mix at deep Disco loft parties. Meanwhile his obsession grew to include music from every corner of the world. In 2001 Sole moved to Los Angeles, and with his broad musical palette he felt right at home in the spiciest melting pot in the country.

As Co-Founder and resident deejay of "AFRO FUNKÉ", They draw a loyal crowd every week for the past 7 years. This is his arena for Afrobeat, Latin, Brazilian and other authentic and remixed world rhythms. Hundreds of international guests havejoined them, from deejays Rich Medina and Cut Chemist to impromptu jam sessions with Zap Mama and Stevie Wonder.

Jeremy Sole's latest creative collaboration with Jamie Strong (Stones Throw / Do Over) fills an aesthetic hole in the Los Angeles nightlife culture. "THE REVIVAL SESSIONS" is a monthly Rhythm & Blues review held in a prohibition-era beachfront speakeasy. In another partnership with Eric "Wiseacre" Tucker, Sole returns to his underground roots with "theLIFT" - monthly, all-night warehouse events with heavyweights like King Britt and Danny Krivit gracing their stages. What started at his small downtown loft, grew to well over 1,000 people as LA came together to celebrate their one-year anniversary.Since then theLIFT has happened in Miami, NYC and Palm Springs, and now takes place monthly in bothSan Francisco and LA.

Jeremy has had the honor of sharing the stage and studio with hundreds of his creative inspirations, including Roy Ayers, Ben Harper, Tony Allen, DJ Shadow, Stevie Wonder, The Meters, Chaka Khan, Seu Jorge, Antibalas, Fat Freddy's Drop, Parliament, Lee Scratch Perry, Buck 65, Quantic and Joe Bataan. He was the last DJ to open for Ray Charles, deejayed for Sly Stone's birthday party, and had the distinct honor of mixing at the California Democratic Party's Election Night Celebration - playing Stevie Wonder's "Sir Duke" for over 10,000 people at the exact moment when Barack Obama officially became the 44th President.

In April 2006, Sole spent 6 months in the studio producing with Ms. Lauryn Hill. After hearing him mix, she asked ifhe had ever considered getting into radio, "because this is the music the people need to hear". A few months later KCRW called to ask him that exact same question, and since then you can tune into Sole every Wednesday at midnight on 89.9 KCRW (archived at www.kcrw.com/jeremysole).

JEREMY SOLE'S MUSAICS, a 9-piece live ensemble, includes members of The Lions, Quantic Soul Orchestra, MayerHawthorne and Build an Ark. Miguel Atwood-Ferguson is on violin. Todd Simon leads the horn section on trumpet. Jeremy is on turntables, guitar and MPC - sampling ethnic percussion and sounds from vintage records, writing livearrangements, and juxtaposing it all as musical mosaics, or "Musaics". It's an experimental-yet-steady sound thathybridizes elements of Afrobeat, Cumbia, Spiritual Jazz and dubbed-out dancefloor beats. Sole has also produced officialremixes for FEMI KUTI, NATURAL SELF, THIEVERY CORPORATION and QUANTIC. In June 2011, Sole's remix of DAVID BOWIE'S "Golden Years" will be released on CD and vinyl, which features Ticklah and the Daptone family for an all-analog reworking of the 1976 classic.

Marshall Tucker Band to play for military in Iran

With Sunday's late-breaking news of the assassination of Osama bin Laden, millions around the world continue to celebrate in approval of served justice. This week, U.S. troops stationed in Iraq and Kuwait will get the chance to let off some steam and celebrate as the Stars for Stripes organization brings southern rock’s legendary multi-platinum selling Marshall Tucker Band to the region.

“In light of recent events, I can't even tell you how honored we are to perform for our men and women in uniform,” says Marshall Tucker lead singer, founding member and Vietnam veteran Doug Gray. “We are so excited to be able to bring a smile and a taste of home to these fine folks. This will be a very special time for us.”

With four stops in Iraq and one in Kuwait, The Marshall Tucker Band will depart tomorrow, Tuesday, May 3 and return May 11. Troops can expect Marshall Tucker classics including “Can’t You See,” “Heard It In A Love Song,” “Fire On The Mountain” and “24 Hours At A Time.”

2011 marks the band’s 40th year since forming in 1971. In celebration of the milestone, The Marshall Tucker Band: Greatest Hits was released in April 2011, in addition to Doug Gray’s 30-year-old lost solo recordings, Soul Of The South.

Dream Theater names Mike Mangini new drummer

A little more than a month after drummer Mike Portnoy’s sudden departure from Dream Theater, the band held three days of auditions in New York City. Over an incredibly productive three-day period, the band played, jammed and spoke candidly and at length with seven of the world’s greatest drummers. The remaining members of the band got to know the candidates musically, personally and professionally and thus assessed the fit of each drummer’s incredible chops with the band’s trademark prog-rock sound.

After intense consideration, the band has unanimously chosen drummer Mike Mangini (Extreme, Steve Vai, Annihilator) to fill the seat behind the kit which was left vacant by Portnoy’s departure late last summer.

Dream Theater began telling their intense tale on April 21st when the band took to its Facebook Page to give fans a glimpse into the audition process. A video tool that was powered by new technology prompted fans to ‘like’ the page in order to unlock exclusive content. Much to the joy of fans, a trailer for the 3-part documentary series on the audition process was then revealed. Those that ‘liked’ the page then received updates on when and where the actual documentary would be airing.

The series, which is featured on Roadrunner Records’ YouTube Channel, has received an overwhelmingly positive response from fans and critics alike and amassed over 1.5 million views in one week's time.

Additionally, both Dream Theater and Mike Mangini were trending topics on Twitter this past Friday, behind only Royal Wedding-related topics.

Keyboardist Jordan Rudess reflected on Mangini’s audition saying, “From the first countoff to the very last note of the final song, every beat Mike played was not only in perfect time, but also executed with an undeniable sense of virtuosity and musicality.”

The band has always been extremely sensitive to the fact that this is not only a monumental decision in their own lives, but also a critical moment in the lives of fans around the world, and has treated their announcement of their new rhythm section anchor with incredible respect to the band’s legacy.

“The departure of our lifelong bandmate and friend was an unexpected and truly heartbreaking blow,” said guitarist John Petrucci. “The fact that as a result of that event we’d be introduced to seven infinitely capable and uniquely talented drummers was heartening. But when we played with the infectiously positive powerhouse of a drummer that is Mike Mangini, we knew we had found a silver lining to what has been, by far, the most challenging episode in our musical lives.”

Bassist John Myung explained that “Mike Mangini is inspiring to us on many levels. His attitude and outlook are entirely positive. His total immersion into performing with us is undeniable, and during the audition, we all felt his strong musical and personal presence. At the same time, we also felt a real unity. He will open up our creative potential. It was destiny at work for us to have found the right person at the right time.”

Going into the auditions, singer James LaBrie had a strong vibe for Mangini’s potential. “I had the privilege of working with Mike on three of my solo albums, so I knew he would be a huge contender. He is without a doubt one of the most intelligent, intuitive, interpretive and virtuosic musicians I have ever played with.”

Mangini is completely cognizant of the demanding rhythmic and artistic responsibilities he’ll be expected to take on as the band’s new timemaster, as well as how deeply the band’s history and relationship runs with DT’s passionate and dedicated followers. “I went to work diligently on the audition material far beyond just learning the songs,” explained Mangini, who, upon taking up the mantle for DT, gives up a coveted faculty position at the Berklee College of Music. “I imagined myself onstage with them, giving the fans what I know Mike Portnoy – who is obviously a legend – always worked so hard to provide. For his sake, as well as for the fans and the band’s, I fought hard to earn the privilege of carrying on the spirit of Dream Theater. At the same time, I wanted to honor Mike’s incredible drumming and musical interpretations. This band has a phenomenal past. DT’s fans are so passionate about DT’s music. They deserve to hear the songs they know played as they love them. I’m responsible for that now.”

With the addition of Mangini to the band’s lineup, Dream Theater moved forward into the studio to begin recording their third release for Roadrunner Records. Guitarist John Petrucci reprises his role as producer, and Paul Northfield (Rush, Queensryche, Porcupine Tree) assumes the same engineering position that he has had on Dream Theater’s previous two Roadrunner releases. The band will kick off a world tour in July 2011.

Mangini, for one, cannot wait to get on the road and show the Dream Theater fan base why he was the chosen one. “I am just busting at the seams on being the new drummer for Dream Theater,” he said. “Digesting the incredibly challenging catalog, exploding with creative ideas, and anticipating what James, John, John and Jordan will come up with collectively and individually for new music and a fresh stage show is going to be really exciting and fun for me. I consider this opportunity the absolute pinnacle of my career. I can’t even imagine what untapped and future musical genius is inside of these guys; I can’t wait until we get into the studio together. Playing with these guys…it’s the mountaintop. This is where I want to be.”

About DREAM THEATER:

Progressive metal band Dream Theater formed in 1985 under the name Majesty by John Petrucci, John Myung and Mike Portnoy. Though a number of lineup changes followed, the three original members remained together along with James LaBrie and Jordan Rudess until September 8, 2010, when Mike Portnoy left the band. In October 2010, the band held auditions for a new drummer, and added Mike Mangini to its roster.

Dream Theater’s tenth studio album, Black Clouds & Silver Linings (Roadrunner Records), was released on June 23, 2009. It entered the U.S. Billboard 200 at #6 and Eurochart Hot 100 at #1, marking their highest entry on either chart. Black Clouds & Silver Linings - a highlight of their 25-year career - was praised by Mojo magazine’s Paul Elliott: “…their lofty ideals remain intact. By modern criteria, Black Clouds & Silver Linings is as highbrow as The Mars Volta, as grandiose as Muse and as heavy as Metallica.”

The legendary progressive metal masters have sold in excess of 10,000,000 records and DVDs worldwide. The release of their eleventh studio album is expected in September 2011; Dream Theater will kick off a world tour in July, 2011.

Robert Pollard to release album

Robert Pollard Announces New LP
Lord Of The Birdhouse Out June 7
On Guided By Voices, Inc.

2011 is turning out to be quite a year for Robert Pollard. The hugely successful Guided By Voices reunion tour is doing victory laps at Pitchfork, Northside, Hopscotch and Sasquatch Festivals, a tribute album is coming out for Record Store Day (including Pollard covers by Flaming Lips, Lou Barlow, David Kilgour, James Husband, Blitzen Trapper, Thurston Moore), and, believe it not, new White House Spokesman Jay Carney declared in a press conference that he's obsessed with Guided By Voices January, February and March saw three remarkable albums by Pollard projects (as well as a live Guided By Voices triple-LP) and watch out, here comes another one, with a new twist.

On Lord Of The Birdcage, out June 7, Pollard reverses his songwriting process, transforming a dozen previously written poems into songs. He's previously never written in this fashion, and his whimsical, surrealist lyrics take center stage.

Lord Of The Birdcage is a subtle record, of mostly steady, relaxed tempos, power pop, glam chugs, gorgeous ballads and a notable number of 3/4 waltz-time meters, including the haunting acoustic "In A Circle", the frenetic rocker "You Sold Me Quickly" and the lush string-driven "Silence Before Violence." Lord Of The Birdcage is a rather cohesive flowing work, and Pollard's sublime songs reveal their treasures through repeat listening. His albums are consistently rewarding.

Get ready for an “afternoon to honor you” at 50/50 Leadership’s annual Love Yourself: A Woman’s Day Out expo. Love Yourself will be held on Sunday, May 22 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Sproul Reception Center (13000 Clarkdale Avenue, Norwalk, CA 90650). Hosted by 50/50 Leadership, the event will feature live entertainment, useful information and professional vendors offering attendees female-interest goods and services for an afternoon of educational indulgence.

One common thread among the vendors will be safety and participants will hear from such esteemed presenters like self-defense guru Ellen Snortland.

“I am on a life-long mission to educate women and girls on physical self-defense as a physical literacy issue, a domestic anti-terrorist measure, and a human right — a necessary ingredient in the quest for women’s liberation,” Love Yourself presenter Ellen Snortland wrote.

Admission to the expo is $10 at the door and giveaways will be provided to the first 50 registrants. Interested parties can register on-line and in advance of the event at www.5050leadership.org. Attendees will have an opportunity visit industry professionals that offer a plethora of products and services of a feminine nature. (formerly the Safety Girls), music, crafts, jewelry and various vendors sponsoring holistic wellness information such as nutrition and massages. If you'd like more information about this event, the organization, or to become a Love Yourself vendor, please call Pauline Field at 818-694-0588 or email Pauline at pfield@5050Leadership.org.

“Yet another reason God created Eve. It appears though, that Eve can get along just fine on her own,” Love Yourself presenter Lilli Cloud.
Thoughtful indie-folk singer-songwriter Denison Witmer will be performing at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood on May 25 to promote his newly released album, “The Ones Who Wait” on Mono Vs. Stereo label.

Entertainment Weekly praises, “We are smitten with these sweet drowsy ditties… (Witmer’s) modest reach and pensive melodies could easily get lost in the white noise of contemporary culture, it would be a shame, though, to miss tiny gems like these…”

Created amidst a period of great personal change for Witmer—a period that included two moves to different cities, the death of his father, and a new business venture (Brooklyn recording studio The Honey Jar)—“The Ones Who Wait” is at once deeply personal and beautifully universal.

The wedding means so much to millions of people all over the world – we had to capture every note and every nuance perfectly and have the recording ready within minutes of the end of the ceremony.”

Dickon Stainer, President of Decca Records said: “This will be the first Official Royal Wedding Album ever to enter the worldwide digital charts. It will capture a piece of history for a new generation”.

David Joseph, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music UK, said, “The Official Album for The Royal Wedding will complement everyone’s personal memories of the event. Thanks to digital technology we will be able to deliver it worldwide almost instantly – it will be the fastest we have ever released an album of this stature.”
