Tour dates for this summer's match made in Heaven...or Hell...are announced today. Marilyn Manson and Slayer's 25-city co-headline North American tour will kick off on July 25 in West Palm Beach, FL, pillaging its way cross-country to wrap up in San Antonio, TX on September 1. Confirmed dates are below.
For this two-pronged-threat double bill, Slayer and Manson will each play full sets with Bleeding Through and one other support band, yet to be determined, opening all shows.
Marilyn Manson just wrapped up work on his upcoming June release to be titled "EAT ME, DRINK ME," which Rolling Stone magazine anticipates as "epic." Voted "Best Band in the World" by Kerrang! magazine, the army of noise behind Manson's bitterness is at once raw and massive when witnessing him live - "rousing the crowd with focused ardor," states the New York Times.
Celebrating its 26th year together, the always-uncompromising Slayer was recently named "Best Live Band" in SPIN's 2006 Readers Poll, and picked up their first Grammy Award in February for "Best Metal Performance." Their latest album, "Christ Illusion" - which debuted at #5 on Billboard's Albums Chart - takes on the U.S. Government about the War in Iraq, prompting one newspaper to speculate, "If Thomas Jefferson were alive today, he undoubtedly would be listening to Slayer."
Confirmed tour dates for the Slayer/Marilyn Manson co-headline summer tour are as follows:

Got kids? Check out the My Little Baldwin Club
Baldwin Piano, America's favorite piano and part of the Gibson family of brands, announced the launch of the My Little Baldwin Club. The online piano lesson plan targeted to preschool-aged children offers an opportunity for fun, interactive lessons that have proven, through research, to increase a child's aptitude in math and reading. The thorough step-by-step lessons are designed to guide the child from the basics of playing single musical notes and building rhythm to playing full songs on their own. Offered on the Baldwin Piano website, the My Little Baldwin Club is a safe, nurturing online community where parents can interact and learn with their children while welcoming the joy of music into their home. Other features of the site include a Parent's Resource Center with access to links to sites that offer research, current topics and additional activities. An exclusive photo gallery is also available for parents who would like to showcase their children experiencing the piano lessons.
All members of the My Little Baldwin Club will receive a Level One interactive, printable piano lesson, printable certificates of completion to reward the children's progress, an exclusive My Little Baldwin Club sticker, color-coded stickers for piano keys to make learning fun and easy, membership to a supportive parent forum, sessions with piano teachers, a quarterly membership newsletter and special offers.
Baldwin Piano plans to introduce a keyboard line in conjunction with the program later in the year. The unlimited piano lesson experience and opportunity to engage parents and children together in learning music is a remarkable opportunity offered by Baldwin Piano to members all over the world. End o' week musings

Scary as it sounds, I've had a pretty quiet week. I went to a nice barbecue Saturday where the band Fisheye performed. And on Sunday I went to the Pasadena Community College Concert Band performance- it was soothing sitting there in the dark, cool hall with pleasant strains of classical music wafting through the air.
Monday I interviewed Chico's Bail Bonds. They're a local blues band which has quite a following and if you pick up their CD, "Bustin' Out The Blues," you'll know why. Check them out at www.chicosbailbondsblues.com
Otherwise I had dance practice and Valerie and I are upping the ante from a few new choreographies to a new costume as well. We went through our fabric and trim collections and have made plans to shop for a few more things on Sunday. It will be fun to do a new project even though it's a lot of hard work.
I'm going to the Avalon tonight to catch MxPx- I really like them. They're funny and perky and were a wonderful interview several years ago.
If you'd like to see me and some video from my adventure at Circus Vargas, visit www.sgvn.com select any paper then scroll down to the audio/video/slideshows box and pick Return to the Circus. You'll get a nice peek at the show, including what I did opening night. The circus will still be open in Westfield Shoppingtown West Covina through Sunday. For the facts, visit www.circusvargas.org
Lastly, I want to send a shout out to Mike Davis, bassist for Dramarama and Halford~ Congrats on being included on Halford's brand new collection ready for European release, but more importantly, go Ducks! For the unfamiliar, Mike is a big Kings hockey fan and we have a little rivalry going. He was teasing me yesterday that the Canucks would stampede right over my Duckies, keeping them from the opportunity to win the whole shebang. Give it up, Mike, they're gonna win big this year. Perhaps your Kings will get themselves together over the coming months and figure out a way to go for the gold next year!
In rotation this week: Lacuna Coil, Chico's Bail Bonds, Requisite, Bluebeard, Acute, Gallows, Ozma, MxPx, Jaded 52, Joe Walla Band, Morpheus (my former band) and most of my Dio collection.
Do something good for yourself this week if you deserve it, if you don't buy your best friend an ice cream cone and, as always,
Keep on rockin'

Acute has expanded tour
ACUTE have announced they’re expanding the upcoming U.S. tour, adding an extra two week’s worth of shows on their cross-country North American tour. The six-week trek with singer-songwriter Jesse Malin will include a key Los Angeles show at The Troubadour on June 20. The Los Angeles-based group—earning acclaim for their mix of gorgeous pop melodies with finely etched landscapes of sound--just released their debut album ARMS AROUND A STRANGER via Help Records this week (May 1).
In other news, this week, ACUTE is a featured artists on the front of the MySpace music page: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=music.
The video for ACUTE’s first single “Follow You Home” has already been added to Much Music’s indie rock show “The Wedge” in Canada, reaching 30 million viewers and MTV Latin America’s “120 Minutes” with over 35 million viewers. Check out the video--shot in “motion control” technique--for “Follow You Home” now at: http://www.imanddmedia.com/Acute/acute_follow.mov. Also, look out for “The City,” which will be featured on Paste magazine’s upcoming June CD compilation.
ACUTE is vocalist/guitarist ISAAC LEKACH (formerly of Poulain), drummer PATRICK EDWARDS (ex-Ozma), and keyboardist/backing vocalist JASON "The Professor" BORGER (a multi-instrumentalist who plays strings on the upcoming Earlimart album) are joined by touring bassist Matt Herman.
ARMS AROUND A STRANGER--produced by Dave Trumfio (Wilco, My Morning Jacket)--is continuing to garner critical praise:
“Isaac Lekach's ministrations as a melody fiend were on full display in his old band, Poulain, a project that never scored any hits except those that found the sweet spot of a few Los Angeles pop fans. Now his fixation has become Acute--the name of Lekach's new four-piece founded with ex-Ozma drummer Patrick Edwards. The songs [on Arms Around a Stranger, Acute's debut] boast lavish orchestration-strings, horns, backing vocals (including a cameo by the Like's Z Berg), pedal steel and Wurlitzer-that gives the record a cinematic quality.”

“Armed with fuzzy guitars and sharp as Ginsu-songcraft, these veterans of underrated never-weres Poulain and Ozma are the latest gold medalists in Los Angeles’ continuing power pop Olympics.”
--Jennifer Edmondson, SPIN, May 2007
“Produced by Dave Trumfio, who worked wonders for My Morning Jacket and Wilco, this debut full-length is a solid step forward. Building on the eclectic songwriting Acute displayed on its 2006 EP, the act continues to craft catchy pop hooks that hit home like a late-afternoon caffeine buzz.”
--Brandon Daviet, WESTWORD (Denver), April 5, 2007
“…Acute goes about penning memorable alt-pop the good old fashioned way-- that lasts the full duration of an entire album. With the majority of up-and-coming rock bands seeming concerned primarily with getting their look just right for photo shoots rather than penning an album's worth of memorable songs, ‘Arms Around A Stranger' shows that Acute is one of the few exceptions.”
--Greg Prato, ALL MUSIC GUIDE
“…a blend of catchy pop hooks, ingenious songwriting, and indie rock’s inventiveness makes Acute a band you’ll want to hear more from.”

June Carter Cash bio is very revealing & CD is filled with big name artists
LIFE OF JUNE CARTER CASH CELEBRATED IN FIRST-EVER BIOGRAPHY
Intimate Story Reveals Details About Her Marriage to Johnny Cash, Relationships with Her Children and Own Personal Struggles
The life of the late country music legend JUNE CARTER CASH will be celebrated in June with the release of an intimate memoir/biography written by her son John Carter Cash, and an all-star tribute album which the multi-Grammy winning Carter Cash conceived and produced. "Anchored In Love" - the CD (Dualtone Music Group) - will be in stores June 5, while "Anchored In Love" - the book (Thomas Nelson) - will hit retail on June 19.
The "Anchored In Love" CD features 12 songs written by or associated with the beloved singer and performed by an eclectic collection of family and friends that include Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Willie Nelson, Ralph Stanley, Brad Paisley, Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris, Billy Joe Shaver, The Peasal Sisters and Billy Bob Thornton, Rosanne Cash, Carlene Carter and Ronnie Dunn, Grey DeLisle, Patty Loveless and Kris Kristofferson. The tracks were recorded throughout 2006, primarily at the fabled Cash Cabin Studio on the Cash property in Hendersonville, TN.
For millions of fans around the world, June Carter Cash was the endearing mountain-born pioneer of country music who basked in the stage spotlight for over fifty years and was associated with such timeless standards as "Ring of Fire" and "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" To her loved ones and friends, she was an "angel of Appalachia," a radiant light and a driving force that unified her family through thick and thin - her favorite phrase was "press on." She enjoyed a creative, fruitful partnership with husband Johnny Cash and was an invaluable, talented member of the Carter Family, but the late performing and songwriting legend has surprisingly never been the subject of her own full-length biography...until now.
"Anchored In Love: An Intimate Portrait of June Carter Cash" is an inside, personal look at the accomplished life of June Carter Cash, as seen through the eyes of her only child with Johnny Cash - John Carter Cash. With skillful prose, Cash covers the peaks of her career - from her early fame with the Carter family to her two-time Grammy Award-winning album "Wildwood Flower" in 2003. He offers a personal, rich retelling of her private life as well - chronicling her childhood in Appalachia, her failed marriages, her romance with Johnny Cash, and the many other ups and downs that followed, including the never-before-told story of her own drug addiction in the last years of her life. Throughout, the book paints a dramatic portrait of struggle and success, and how the power of true love can overcome all obstacles. Cash also reveals brand-new information about his mother from his own tender memories and heartwarming stories, as well as anecdotes from celebrity friends and other family members, including previously untold details about June and Johnny's final days before their deaths in 2003.
"I hope through these pages, people may come to know m mother in some of the ways I have known her, that though they may read of her pain, they will see her strength and beauty, most of all," says John Carter Cash.
The Cash family may have seemed like the country equivalent of Camelot, but as this memoir reveals, drugs were an underlying force. In addition to Johnny's storied dalliances with prescription drugs from the 1960s to the end of his life, which would lead to heated fights and friction between he and June - all of June's own children - Rosey, Carlene, and John Carter - developed problems with drugs and/or alcohol, and June was supportive as they battled their worst demons. Yet, most shockingly, the book reveals that June, too, battled with her own addiction to pain killers, starting in 1993 and lasting right up to her death. Her son talks about how she braved chronic pain in her legs and suffered a back injury earlier in life, which may have contributed to her strong dependence on pills. Lastly, he talks about the impact of his dad's addictions on their lives through new, choice anecdotes.
He describes one particular incident in the 1980s when he shared a hotel room with his dad and noticed his uneven breathing during his sleep. John Carter was afraid that his father had died, and he and his mom had to drag Johnny into the shower to revive him.
Dealing with her family's addictions, June was a source of stability, guidance and spirituality. It was she who initiated Johnny's first intervention in 1983 and would help encourage him to clean up by reading him psalms from the Bible.
Says John Carter in the story, "Mom was loving and generous, thoughtful and caring, and she could always find a reason to look up, to believe that the best in a person would eventually come out...It was as if she could see through the veil of misery. Although the spirit of disease might torment her loved ones, sometimes making us hard and vicious, she saw beyond that ugliness into the heart of her child and husband, finding the beauty within us."

Monster in the Machine new effort out in July & August
Monster In The Machine’s BUTTERFLY PINNED is more than just music--it’s an active aural experience. The debut album by the California band--Shannon Crawford (vocals/keyboards/guitars), Doug Ardito (bass) and Josh Freese (drums)--is due out July 10 (online) and August 21 (retail). It’s one of two releases on Emotional Syphon Recordings (ADA Distribution), the independent label owned by Koßn guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer.Artistic freedom remains paramount to Emotional Syphon Recordings.
“When Koßn was on Sony,” explains Shaffer, “we were so lucky the label never came in and said we couldn’t say things on our records. We were able to have 100 percent creative freedom. One of my main goals is to maintain that. I’m never going to tell artists on my label what they can and can’t say. I want them to push the envelope.”
Shannon Crawford—the mastermind behind Monster In The Machine—does just that with BUTTERFLY PINNED. He’s crafted a record that entrances the listener with swirling acoustic melodies and haunting, hypnotic electronics. From the infectiously incendiary chorus of “Under Your Shadow” to the sonic dreamscape of “Helicopter,” the music remains memorable. Pristine melodies soar over brooding beats, and tracks like “Savior” convey a message of disenchantment and call for change. Underneath the beauty of the music lies an honest mirror reflecting social ills. Yet, hope for a solution exists. Issues faced include the death of our environment, religion’s contradictions and the perilous existence of an artist under the thumb of a corporation. These are some of the darker themes that Crawford delves into on BUTTERFLY PINNED.
The album is not Crawford’s first foray into the recording world. In 1997, his band Cellophane was signed to Virgin Records.
“Cellophane had a good record that fell through the cracks,” Crawford says. “For a long time it was really heartbreaking to have had that and lose it. I was 23-years-old, and I couldn’t deal with personalities of the music business. I quit, because no one at the label was doing anything anyway. They just put us out on the road, and that was it.”
Disillusioned with the music industry, Crawford pursued another passion, painting. His work has been acquired by celebrities from Lindsay Lohan to author Jerry Stahl. He also created the cover for Norma Jean’s highly successful REDEEMER album. In the midst of painting, he never lost sight of his musical ambitions. Then inspiration struck in 2006.
“A lot of it has to do with maturity. Being a full-time single father to my daughter helped me.” He continues, “Last year, I just began writing all of these really good songs because I wasn’t trying to push it or force it. I just let it go and all of these great things came to me and through me.”Once finished, Crawford played the demos for longtime friend Shaffer.
“James has been my biggest cheerleader for years. He’d been on the fence about starting a label, and when I played him my first songs, he said, ‘That’s it. I’m starting it.’”
Shaffer loved the music so much that he lent his guitar talents to the tense album closer “Don’t.” Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle) stepped in to handle drum duties for the entire record while Imani Coppola plays violin on “Shut the Door.” The recording line-up was then rounded out by ex-Cellophane/current Puddle of Mudd bassist Doug Arditio.
Crawford produced the album himself and it was mixed and recorded at Henson Studios (formerly A&M Studios) in Los Angeles, CA.Ultimately, the album traverses an entire emotional spectrum.
“The major label mindset is that you don’t want to be too diverse, and you don’t want to confuse people. I think the public is smart enough to handle a diverse record. BUTTERFLY PINNED is eclectic and honest, but at the same time, it’s ethereal. It takes you to another dimension. Art is an escape, and people want to escape.”
The title of the record sums up the concept perfectly.
“It’s about the death for vanity, and the butterfly pinned is a perfect example of that because it’s usually overlooked. For example, we are killing everyday for our vanity by the cars we drive,” exclaims Crawford. “I’ve got to practice what I preach by driving a Prius and a vegetable oil car, and I’m trying. People just need to try.”
Next up for Emotional Syphon Recordings will be the debut album by Droid, which is also due out July 10 (online) and August 21 (retail). Droid combines the bludgeoning precision of bands like Lamb of God and Meshuggah with a down and dirty hardcore vocal delivery. Their songs slay with a calculated groove and violent, percussive riffs. Deftones frontman Chino Moreno guests on one of the forthcoming debut’s standout tracks, “Vengeance is Mine.”Shaffer is excited about the prospect of releasing albums by two very different bands on Emotional Syphon Recordings.
As he explains, “I wanted to establish right away that it’s going to be a diverse record label and get both spectrums of the rock world. In a couple of years, I’d like to have 10 really strong bands. My main goal is to just get them on the road and making a living at playing music. If one of the records is a hit record, great, but I’m still going to keep everything on the independent level—a small company with a small staff. That’s the vision I have for it.”
That vision separates Emotional Syphon Recordings from so many other labels that remain focused on statistics rather than quality art.Having an artist front the label allows for serious exploration and boundary pushing. Shaffer aims to help young bands create what comes naturally.
“I’ve been very lucky to make music and to make a living at it. It’s been a gift for me. There are so many people who are talented, and I want to help some other people make a living at what they love to do. It’s kind of my way to repay what I’ve been given.”
Emotional Syphon Recordings is completely a passion project, with Shaffer hoping to eventually release his own music as well as music videos and DVDs.

Michael Franti to visit San Quentin
Outspoken Anti- recording artist and award-winning documentary filmmaker Michael Franti will perform an extremely rare San Quentin Prison concert on Saturday, May 19th at 11 a.m. With a theme of tolerance and co-existence, the first gig inside the prison in five years – since Metallica’s 2002 appearance – will be held before roughly 2,000 inmates.
And Franti doesn’t just want to just deliver his message of “Power to The Peaceful on the Inside” to concert attendees in the yard. He is currently in talks to allow the event – organized by Guerrilla Management and the non-profit organization Bread & Roses – to be broadcast to San Quentin’s death row inmates via closed circuit television.
Preceding the performance, Franti will be interviewed live on Al Jazeera TV’s “Riz Khan” show next Thursday, May 10th, at 12 Noon PST. Al Jazeera English is the world’s first English language news channel to be headquartered in the Middle East. It has more than 86 million global viewers and can be viewed for free via www.relavista.tv.
Franti – who won the Best International Documentary Award in the prestigious Harlem International Film Festival for his heralded 2005 film about the Iraq war, I Know I’m Not Alone – took time out from his busy touring schedule with Spearhead to visit with and perform for injured soldiers at Washington’s Walter Reed Army Medical Center this past March. Earlier that month, the performer’s efforts for peace earned him the honor of “Michael Franti Day” from Austin, Texas’ Mayor Will Wynn.
I Know I’m Not Alone – shot during his travels to the war zones of Iraq, Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories in 2005 – has been called “an antidote to despair” by anti-war activist Medea Benjamin of Global Exchange.
Inspiring last year’s acclaimed Anti- disc Yell Fire!, which The San Francisco Examiner dubbed it “a call for hope.” Michael Franti and Spearhead fuse hip-hop, rock ’n’ roll, reggae and folk sounds with a distinctly candid political voice. Heralded as “the most important artist recording and touring today who has yet to reach the masses,” by Island Records’ founder Chris Blackwell, Franti has also been confirmed to appear at the 2007 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee the weekend of June 14th – 17th.

MxPx readies new release and on tour- in L.A. Friday
I'm going to be at the Avalon Friday checking out my old friends... will you be there too?? You should be! ~M
MXPX have returned to Tooth & Nail records for their eighth studio album, SECRET WEAPON.
Set for release July 17, the album is full of the highly-charged, infectious anthems that have made the punk/pop trio scene favorites and boasts a smattering of adventurous, classic pop-inspired winners that take MXPX into new territory. Look for MXPX to give fans a taste of the new songs as they headline the Tooth & Nail tour--now in its third year—which began May 1 in Seattle and criss-crosses America before wrapping June 11 in Salt Lake City.
The new album reunites MXPX--MIKE HERRERA (bass/vocals), TOM WISNIEWSKI (guitars) and YURI RULEY (drums)--with Aaron Sprinkle, who produced the band's first album (Pokinatcha) and went on to work with artists such as Pedro The Lion, Anberlin, Eisley, Emery and The Almost.
The incendiary, attention-grabbing first single and album opener “Secret Weapon” features a guitar solo from Bad Religion’s Brian Baker and also finds MxPx wielding its infamous, optimistic tack.
“We’ve always been a band that’s tried to focus on the positive side of life,” acknowledges HERRERA. “But we try to do it in a way that’s real to people and not cheesy. We kind of embrace the dismal and the uplifting at the same time. And ‘Secret Weapon,’ the song and the album, sums up where MXPX is right now.”
MXPX finds the perfect balance of dichotomy and consistency on SECRET WEAPON from “Shut It Down”--a blistering homage to The Clash replete with soaring choruses, thundering drums and a vocal cameo from Sugarcult’s Tim Pagnotta--to the riotous, 90-second circle-pit anthem of “Contention,” as well as the stellar harmonies that elevate the lush, Beach Boys-inspired “Sad Sad Song” with guest John Davis, formerly of Superdrag on piano and backing vocals.
After a decade and a half in operation, MXPX has now sold over 2.4 million records worldwide. Founded in July 1992 by HERRERA and RULEY, the Bremerton, Washington-bred band’s line-up has remained constant since WISNIEWSKI joined in 1995. The band has amassed a series of alternative radio and video favorites like “Punk Rawk Show,” “Chick Magnet,” “Move To Bremerton,” “I’m Okay, You’re Okay” and “Running Out Of Time” over seven extremely popular studio albums, an array of EPs, plus a live disc and a DVD. Returning to Tooth & Nail--a label now running circles around the conglomerates when it comes to getting rock albums on the charts by the likes of Underoath, Anberlin and The Almost--made perfect sense for its glimmering but tenacious eighth album.
“It’s no secret that years ago we had a pretty well-publicized falling out with them but it’s been a long time and things have healed,” TOM says. “We sort of picked up where we left off.”
Fresh off the completion of an amicable deal with respected indie SideOneDummy, MXPX began seriously considering label founder Brandon Ebel’s offer to rejoin the label.
From the explosive closer “Tightly Wound,” which boasts a guest contribution by Benji Madden of Good Charlotte, to the upbeat punch of “Here’s To The Life,” the men in MXPX--who were handed the Keys To The City of Bremerton last year--have delivered the strongest record of its career.
