Entries being accepted for Folk Tree art show in Pasadena

From June 4 – July 2, 2011, The Folk Tree presents the juried exhibition Pasadena: A Cultural Mosaic. This show is being held in conjunction with Happy Birthday Pasadena – Celebrating 125 Years, the City’s official anniversary celebration to be hosted by Pasadena Museum of History on June 11, 2011. The opening reception for The Folk Tree show is on Saturday, June 4, from 2 – 6 P.M. In 1886, Pasadena became the first independent incorporated city in Los Angeles County. However, the cultural history of the area extends back much farther. It was once occupied by the Hahamogna Tribe of Native Americans, and today the San Gabriel Valley is considered one of the most diverse regions of the country, reflected in the richness of its traditions and the contributions made by its various ethnic communities. The Folk Tree invites artists to submit work in a variety of media reflecting or inspired by the many cultures that have contributed to Pasadena’s history and clearly relating to some aspect of the city. The goal of this show is to recognize the influence all these groups have had on the area, both historically and in contemporary society (for example, through images related to festivals and rituals, landmarks, people, the landscape, architecture). The Selection Committee consists of: Rocky Behr, Owner,The Folk Tree; Michelle Mills, Staff Writer, San Gabriel Valley Newspaper Group, and 31st Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade Queen; Gail Mishkin, Gallery Director, The Folk Tree; Amanda Parsons, Anthropologist, Author, Photographer, Arts/Museum Consultant; and, Ardis Willwerth, Director of Exhibitions and Programming, Pasadena Museum of History. The Folk Tree, a store/gallery near historic Old Town Pasadena, is the outgrowth of owner Rocky Behr’s fascination with travel and the art and culture of indigenous people, particularly of Mexico and Latin America. Since opening in 1986, The Folk Tree has specialized in folk art of the Americas. A separate gallery within the retail space hosts changing exhibitions featuring local artists throughout the year. Pasadena: A Cultural Mosaic will be on view in The Folk Tree gallery. The Folk Tree is located at 217 South Fair Oaks Avenue, minutes walking distance from the Gold Line’s Del Mar station, and just south of Old Pasadena. Hours are: M-W, 11-6; Th-Sat, 10-6; Sun, 12-5. For more information contact Gail Mishkin at mishkinftc@aol.com or call (626) 793-4828. Entry forms are available on The Folk Tree website at http://www.folktree.com/pasadena11entry.html.

Thrillist shares Check My Ride

Check My Ride An easier way to stalk your ex...carsIn many ways cars are better than girlfriends -- you can get in whenever you want, they don't complain when you take their tops off, and spare tires are actually a plus. To follow up on old flames that could be covered in them, hit up Check My Ride. A recently launched social network affiliated with a major auto data company, Check My Ride lets you build and share a comprehensive personal vehicle history and check up on old whips using their “Where in the World is My Car?” tool, not to be confused with the Dude Where’s My Car? tool, as no one cares where Stifler is (spoiler alert: it's rehab). Start by building a detailed history of your vehicles (age when purchased, year/make/model/color, year sold, etc.), including awesome road trips you took, how many miles you put on, and “why [it] was memorable”; once complete, it’ll calculate the total mileage you’ve accrued since you started driving and generate a bar graph timeline of your life in terms of car ownership, which will be low if you're wont to take "bar graph" literally. Next, enter a VIN into the car-finder widget (powered by AutoCheck) to see deets on an old whip's current whereabouts, including a GMap with connected pins showing the places it's been registered since you ditched it, unless you literally ditched it, in which case, um...it's in a ditch. You can also connect with fellow users to comment on their cars, and, once membership levels are a bit more robust, possibly even track down your old ride's current driver, who hopefully isn't referring to your ex-girlfriend when he starts talking about burning rubbers. Plot the memories and see where that Cutlass Supreme ended up at CheckMyRide.com http://links.thrillist.com/2ucn.a0oq/TZKCtO5tl_OhiP7GBd504

Julie Feeney to release new album

Dramatic and stylish singer / composer/ orchestrator Julie Feeney, winner of the Choice Music Prize for 'Irish Album of the Year' (Ireland’s equivalent of the Mercury Music Prize), will release her album ‘pages’ on May 31 via her own label, mittens. Combining her “mesmerizing stage presence and eccentric pop genius” (Hot Press), Feeney takes an avant-garde approach to her innovative, one-of-a-kind sound, which, while rooted in classical music, straddles both the pop and theatrical worlds. With noted influences ranging from Philip Glass and June Tabor to Bob Dylan and Beethoven, Feeney has constructed a subtly complex masterpiece in ‘pages.’ After composing the record entirely on her own, Feeney then got to work recording the album by conducting an orchestra of clarinets, flutes, oboes, bassoons, trombones, French horns, trumpets, strings, sticks, harp and percussion from the Irish Chamber Orchestra, and then singing over what she just conducted – all in one six-hour session. A true perfectionist in the vein of Bobby McFerrin, Feeney’s supreme talent in composition and arrangement is matched only by her gorgeous, soaring voice. Hailed by The Washington Post as "The Emerald Isle's Original," Feeney is a genuine star in Ireland, with her music widely broadcast on TV and radio and her recent sold-out performance at Ireland's National Concert Hall receiving a 10-minute standing ovation. The Sunday Tribune (UK) gushed that Feeney's last album, '13 songs,' was "a remarkable achievement," adding "Feeney towers over her contemporaries." The NY Times has called her music “charming, urbane and dreamy” and The Guardian (UK) simply said "the world will listen." Feeney is currently in the midst of her debut U.S. tour, which spans from New York to California and is part of Culture Ireland’s ‘Imagine Ireland: A Year of Irish Arts in America.’ Julie Feeney On The Web: http://www.juliefeeney.com http://www.facebook.com/pages/Julie-Feeney-page/283249963860 http://twitter.com/julie_feeney

Kate Voegele to release new album

On May 17, ATO Records will release ‘Gravity Happens,’ the strongest album yet from the acclaimed and multi-talented singer-songwriter and actress Kate Voegele. A critical favorite since her 2007 debut ‘Don’t Look Away,’ Voegele has refined her stellar songwriting skills to craft an album that shines with uncompromising honesty. That same day, the Ohio native will premiere her new song “Heart in Chains,” as performed by her character Mia, for the season finale of the hit television series One Tree Hill. ‘Gravity Happens’ bursts with songs that marry Voegele’s heartland roots with her youthful, modern attitude. It reflects an impressive level of maturity for the 24-year-old singer whose lyrics often elevate the personal to the universal. “I want my music to be your favorite pair of blue jeans,” she explains. Though writing, touring and acting at a quicksilver pace has kept her busy, Voegele’s feet have remained firmly planted on the ground where her small town, all-American roots have been a constant source of inspiration ever since she first picked up the guitar at the age of 15. Since then, Voegele has shared stages with the likes of Neil Young, Natasha Bedingfield, Grace Potter and Patty Griffin. She has also received a bounty of praise for her powerhouse vocals and “serious charisma” (Entertainment Weekly). That same voice and charisma landed her a role on the television series One Tree Hill in 2007. Creator Mark Schwahn tapped the budding songstress for the show after hearing her debut album. Voegele continues to perform her original songs on the show as the enchanting vocal artist Mia Catalano, a character whose storyline is dictated by Voegele’s music. The soulful, raw songs on ‘Gravity Happens’ are not only a testament to Voegele’s evolution as an artist, but as a person coming into her own. “As you get older you realize that the world can be more cruel and scary than you ever imagined…I just hope these songs can take a tiny bit of weight off .” The album embodies a year of transition and growth for Kate, and a number of eye-opening experiences, that have both informed and strengthened her work.

"Grey's Anatomy" gets musical tonight

How to Save a Life," the song that brought an audience to from its placement in ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," will be treated to a group sing-along in the show's musical episode airing March 31. With a Tony Award winner in the cast, Sara Ramirez, it's no surprise she receives the bulk of the solos on the drama's first musical episode. As Dr. Callie Torres, she sings lead on Kate Havnevik's "Grace" and "The Story" and shares lead duties with Jessica Capshaw on KT Tunstall's "Universe & U." The show will feature nine songs closely associated with the show. Chandra Wilson, who starred in "Caroline, or Change" on Broadway, sings lead on Get Set Go's "Wait." Only one of the songs, Gomez's "How We Operate," will feature a lead male voice, that of Kevin McKidd who portrays Dr. Owen Hunt. The ensemble of Ramirez, McKidd, Daniel Sunjata, Scott Foley, Justin Chambers, Chandra Bailey, Kim Raver and Jessica Capshaw gets two numbers: "How to Save a Life" and Jesus Jackson's "Running On Sunshine." A video of Ramirez, who won her acting Tony for the musical "Spamalot," McKidd and Bailey singing "Chasing Cars" is featured in a promo for the drama. The show returns to original episodes March 24. The show's creator Shonda Rhimes and director Tony Phelan had the songs selected and written into a script in November when Chris Horvath was brought in a music director. He spent about two months on arrangements and rehearsing musicians; the vocals were recorded over four days. "When we started I knew we had four people who had serious vocal talent, some had a little bit of experience and some had barely sung in the shower," Horvath tells Billboard. "There was some pushback from some of the cast … but I was impressed by how everybody responded." Jessica Capshaw, for example, worked with a vocal coach and came up "with some really cool qualities" in her voice, Horvath said. He was also impressed with Chyler Leigh, another non-singer. Horvath, a composer, producer and arranger, is putting the finishing touches on the soundtrack, which will be digitally available on March 31.

Younger Brother and Shpongle to release albums

This spring, pioneering musician/producer/composer/DJ Simon Posford offers up the release of Younger Brother's scintillating new album Vaccine. Vaccine (April 26, 2011/SCI Fidelity Records) is the third album by Younger Brother, in which Posford teams with longtime collaborators Benji Vaughan and Ruu Campbell. Look for select Younger Brother U.S. tour dates in April; the complete list of dates is included below. Vaccine is Younger Brother’s boldest release to date, and marks a notable evolution from the band's electronic origins by embracing melodic song structures and organic instrumental sounds. Vaccine sounds like no other record ever made, marrying top-quality, stadium-size songcraft to the pulsing beats and sound palette of full-tilt electronic music. Featuring Marc Brownstein (Disco Biscuits) on bass, Tom Hamilton (Brothers Past) on guitar and Joe Russo (who also plays in the Grateful Dead spin-off act Furthur) on drums, the nine-song collection offers expansive, anthemic songs, each molded with Younger Brother’s unique digital process. The result: songs that warrant radio airplay just as much as dance floor action. The U.S. release of Vaccine coincides with Posford’s other current project: the highly anticipated “Shpongle presents The Shpongletron Experience.” For this massive run of Shpongle “Hybrid” DJ dates, Posford reveals his brand-new "Decks, FX & 101" show made up of an arsenal of turntables, synths, and effects units. The elaborately staged multi-media presentation, which Posford describes as a "maelstrom of beauty and surprise," will raise the bar on Shpongle's longstanding reputation for providing mind-bending, fully immersive multi-dimensional, multi-sensory experiences. Younger Brother tour dates - with Posford (synth/guitar), Vaughan (Ableton / synth) and Campbell (vocals) joined by Matt White on guitar, Chris Borud on bass and Nikolaj Bjerre on drums - are as follows: Apr 6 - Bourbon St. Baltimore, MD w/ Jesters of Kindness, Elemental Apr 7 - Highline Ballroom - New York, NY w/ guests TBA Apr 8 - TLA Philadelphia, PA w/ Conspirator Apr 9 - Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom Denver, CO w/ Prometheus, Inspired Flight, and Human Agency Shpongle presents The Shpongletron Experience tour dates are as follows: April 12 - Knitting Factory - Reno, NV w/ Random Rab, Psilogod April 13 - McDonald Theatre - Eugene, OR w/ Random Rab April 14 - Arcata Theater - Arcata, CA w/ Random Rab April 16 - Coachella - Indio, CA April 20 - Bluebird Theater - Denver, CO w/ Random Rab April 21 - Belly Up Aspen - Aspen, CO (DJ Set) w/ Random Rab April 22 - Spring Back to Vail - Vail, CO April 23 - Boulder Theater - Boulder, CO w/ Random Rab, Hallucinogen April 25 – The Granada - Lawrence, KS w/ Random Rab April 26 - Majestic Theatre - Madison, WI w/ Random Rab April 28 – Club Zoo - Pittsburgh, PA w/ Random Rab April 29 - Westcott Theater - Syracuse, NY w/ Random Rab, Pax Effex April 30 - Best Buy Theater - NYC, NY w/ Random Rab, Hallucinogen May 3 - 9:30 Club - Washington DC w/ Random Rab May 4 - Pearl Street Nightclub - Northampton, MA w/ Random Rab May 5 - Royale - Boston, MA w/ Random Rab May 6 - Higher Ground - Burlington, VT w/ Random Rab May 9 - The Blue Note - Columbia, MO w/ Random Rab, Tom Foolery, Clandestine May 11 - Old Rock House – St. Louis, MO w/ Random Rab May 12 – The Rave - Milwaukee, WI w/ Random Rab May 13 - Epic Event Center - Minneapolis, MN w/ Random Rab May 14 - Congress Theater - Chicago, IL w/ Random Rab, Excision May 18 - Headliners Music Hall - Louisville, KY w/ Random Rab May 19 -Valarium - Knoxville, TN w/ Random Rab May 20 - Orange Peel - Asheville, NC w/ Random Rab May 21 - The Masquerade - Atlanta, GA w/ Random Rab May 25 - State Theatre - Portland, ME May 26 - Northern Lights - Clifton Park, NJ (DJ Set) May 27 - The Town Ballroom - Buffalo, NY May 29 - B.O.M.B. Known as the best dog ball on the planet, the Orbee launched a decade of romping, wagging and giving in 2001 for the socially responsible pet industry leader. The "I Love My Orbee So Much Story" Contest kicked off on March 15th and runs through May 30th. "We are excited to receive and share more Orbee stories through the new contest," adds Smith.

Omnivore Recordings release debut vinyl projects

Ominvore Recordings has announced the release of the label’s debut vinyl projects with a special, limited-edition LP of Big Star’s “lost album” titled Third and a yellow-vinyl Buck Owens 7", featuring early and unreleased recordings, officially available at retail worldwide on Record Store Day, April 16, 2001. The company, distributed in North America by EMI and in Europe by Ace Records UK, will continue to release new projects throughout the year including previously unissued recordings from Townes Van Zandt and Leon Russell, with additional projects to be announced soon. Big Star Third [Test Pressing Edition] is a special edition vinyl release limited to 2,000 pieces worldwide. The album has been described as a lost record re-discovered years after it was recorded, one that has seen many track listings, titles and album covers. It’s been dubbed a classic, and an enigma. The Omnivore Recordings edition comes complete with replicas of the original tape box, tracking and lead sheets, mastering card and is pressed on 180-gram vinyl. The new pressing was cut from the original assembly reel, on the same lathe at the legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis and by the very same engineers who cut it the first time, Larry Nix and John Fry. Pressed on high quality vinyl at RTI, this is the definitive version of this album. In the limited run of 2,000, five copies of the original test pressings signed by Big Star’s Jody Stephens, original mastering engineers Larry Nix and Ardent’s John Fry will be available at retail, randomly, worldwide. Take a peek inside Larry Nix's Mastering room at the legendary Ardent Studios in Memphis as Larry, John and Jody prepare the actual new master being used for the new “test pressing” edition on YouTube. The worldwide release of Omnivore’s Buck Owens 7" 45 on yellow vinyl—limited to 1,300 copies—features “Close Up The Honky Tonks” (Early Version - previously unreleased) / My Heart Skips A Beat (Early Version). After Buck acquired all of his masters from Capitol Records, most everything he recorded for the label found its way back into the marketplace in one form or another, except this January 28, 1964, take of “Close Up The Honky Tonks.” Recorded at the same sessions as his #1 single “My Heart Skips A Beat,” the Omnivore version of “Close Up The Honky Tonks” was recently discovered, buried on a multi-track reel—thought to be lost for years. It’s in a different key than the released version (recorded five months later), and whether this was an abandoned take (it does not feature Buck’s trademark, overdubbed harmonies) remains unclear. What is clear is that it is a fascinating peek into the evolution of The Buckaroos and a classic song. Although never issued as a single, “Close Up The Honky Tonks” became a fan favorite and has been covered by artists including Dwight Yoakam, The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers. The flip side featuring “My Heart Skips A Beat” was originally recorded during the “Act Naturally” sessions in 1963. This early performance carries elements—like fiddle and the honky-tonk shuffle—that Buck would eventually move away from. The track was finished and apparently readied for release, but the song was buried until the tune was re-cut almost a year later (it is possible that the success of the newer sound of “Act Naturally” was the reason for shelving the original version). While this version appeared on the Bear Family box in 2008, it has never been released in mono on a 45. This beauty is the coolest Buckin’ A & B side you’ll ever find. About Omnivore Recordings: Founded in 2010 by long-time, highly respected industry veterans Cheryl Pawelski, Greg Allen, and Brad Rosenberger, Omnivore Recordings’ vision is to preserve the legacies and music created by historical, heritage and catalog artists while also releasing previously unissued, newly found “lost” recordings and making them available for music-loving audiences to discover. Distributed by EMI in North America and Ace Records UK in Europe, Omnivore Recording’s current artist projects include limited edition releases by Big Star and Buck Owens with future projects by Townes Van Zandt and Leon Russell to be announced soon. Jascha Heifetz documentary to screen at Colburn April 16

It was announced today that the world premiere of Jascha Heifetz: God’s Fiddler, a feature length documentary on the world’s most renowned violinist will take place on Saturday, April 16th at 5:00pm in The Colburn School’s Zipper Hall. The film gives a unique insight into the life of Jascha Heifetz, a legendary but mysterious artist for whom only perfection would do; a musical wunderkind who went on to define the standard in violin playing for nearly a century. Heifetz’s story embodies the dual nature of artistic genius: the paradox of how a mortal man lives with immortal gifts; gifts he must honor, but which extract a life long price. Widely recognized as one of the greatest violinists of all time, Heifetz burst upon the European musical scene as a child virtuoso, where he created such a sensation that police had to protect the young violinist after concerts (as was the case in a 1911 St. Petersburg outdoor concert before 25,000 spectators). His incredible career included stunning success at solo and chamber engagements with major orchestras and concert halls worldwide; as a highly respected teacher and as a prolific recording artist. The film explores not only his musical history in vintage performance clips, but also his family life with rarely seen family home movies, photos and footage from his influence upon pop culture-- from The Muppet Show to Star Trek. The Colburn School was chosen for the premiere because of the school’s commitment to the legacy of Heifetz. When slated for destruction after Heifetz’s death, his Lloyd Wright-designed teaching studio was moved piece by piece to its current home at The Colburn School, where it is now the teaching home of master violin faculty Robert Lipsett, who himself studied with Heifetz as a young man. The School also houses a collection of Heifetz’s personal items. Portions of the film were shot at the studio at The Colburn School during summer 2010.

Christopher Cross to release new album

The voice rides high. Melodic. Beautiful. Everything everybody ever loved about Christopher Cross is on display in the 13 exquisite tracks of Doctor Faith, to be released May 10 by Eagle Rock Entertainment (through earMusic). It marks the first all-new studio offering from Christopher Cross in 12 years. Thirty-one years, five Grammys and an Oscar later, Doctor Faith is a dramatic return. His songwriting has never been sharper, more observant. His singing is better than it’s ever been. The production, for the first time, is guitar-oriented, rather than keyboard-oriented. Michael McDonald is on hand to give voice to the title character. “This album not only feels like a new chapter to my career,” says Cross, “it feels like starting a whole new book.” Cross has dedicated the album to Joni Mitchell “for a lifetime of inspiration.” Influenced by Mitchell’s idiosyncratic way with a lyric line, and the guts to delve deep, Cross, and long time songwriting partner Rob Meurer, have written some songs sure to be instant classics. Opener “Hey Kid” lays it all out: optimistic yet cautious, forward-thinking yet imbued with a world-weary voice-of-experience, it sets the tone for such profundities as “I’m Too Old For This,” “Poor Man’s Ecstasy,” “Still I Resist” and the title track. One of the recurring themes of the album is the search for peace by making peace within one’s self. Cross landed loud and large on the music scene in 1980, winning the Grammy for “Best New Artist.” “Sailing” and “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” were both #1s, the latter co-written with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, and the late Peter Allen. Cross charted eight times between 1980 and 1983. He has eight albums to his credit, as well as a number of other packages. Through it all, he’s maintained his high level of excellence, also singing, writing and performing with other artists. Eagle Rock Entertainment is an international media production and distribution company operating across audiovisual entertainment programming. Eagle Rock Entertainment works directly alongside talent to produce the highest quality programming output covering film, general entertainment and musical performance. Eagle Rock Entertainment has offices based in London, New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Hamburg, & Paris. Track Listing: 1.) Hey Kid 2.) I’m Too Old For this 3.) When You Come Home 4.) Dreamers 5.) Scot Crandal releases album with portion of proceeds to benefit PHAME

Scot Crandal’s newly released album, the aptly titled Now & Again, is a compelling reminder that a well-matched marriage of words and music is what makes the world of love songs go round. The album features eleven original songs composed by Crandal, with lyrics by Nancy Jerrick. Crandal provides stylish vocals and piano accompaniment, recorded at Dead Aunt Thelma’s Studio in Portland, Oregon by well-known recording engineer Josh Millman. Music journalist Mike Roots rates the album 5 out of 5 stars and writes, “As ambitious as Now & Again is in its pursuit of the lofty goal of finding a fitting and comfortable place within the canon of American standards and jazz vocal pieces, it succeeds in a marvelous way.” Music journalist Bryan Rodgers rates the album 4 out of 5 stars and writes, “Crandal instantly becomes an amalgam of classic crooners. His voice has the arresting power of Etta James, the smoothness of Kurt Elling, and the personality of a Bacharach or Sinatra. He’s diverse too, moving easily from the impassioned blues mood of “Bad Storm Comin’ In” to the regal title track, which unfolds with lovelorn, cinematic drama.” In creating the album, Crandal and Jerrick hearken back to the tradition of the Great American Songbook, where sophisticated lyrics and musical expression go hand in hand. “Our aim is to capture the varied moods and styles of the time-honored classics, while also expressing some of the fresh ideas of today,” Jerrick says. “In these songs, I used mostly traditional chord progressions, occasionally infused with more modern harmonic and melodic ideas.” Crandal says. He adds, “I wanted to create something intimate, like the listener is just a table or two away, listening to me play the piano and sing. I think the recording captures this nuance really well.” The songs run the gamut from love lost, in the bittersweet “No Regrets” and torchy “Any Day Now” to love found, in the pop-influenced “Loving Just You” and upbeat “Now You’ve Heard It from Me.” “Summer Heat” expresses the pain of parted lovers, while “So Much, So Fast, So Soon” plays with the surprise of unexpected romance. Together, the album’s songs capture the longing, disappointment, and elation that are part and parcel of the love canon. Now & Again is available through iTunes, CD Baby, Amazon, Bandcamp and other leading music retailers. Five percent of all sale proceeds will be donated to PHAME, a Portland fine arts academy for developmentally disabled adults. An album release party will be held on Sunday, May 1, 2:30 p.m. at Doc George’s Jazz Kitchen, 4605 NE Fremont, Portland, OR 97213, 503-287-7067; Crandal will perform many of the songs, and CDs and download cards will be available for sale. http://www.scotcrandal.com/

dredg and The Dear Hunter at the Roxy May 3 and 4

Two of my favorite bands together on two nights-- who could ask for more?! ~m dredg (headlining) and The Dear Hunter (support), along with Balance and Composure, Trophy Fire, will get their new tour started in Los Angeles at the Roxy on Tuesday, May 3 and Wednesday, May 4. dredg’s new album, CHUCKLES AND MR. SQUEEZY, will be released May 3 on Superball Music. It’s the highly anticipated follow-up to 2009’s critically acclaimed THE PARIAH, THE PARROT, THE DELUSION (Ohlone Recordings through Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group), which was inspired in part by Salman Rushdie’s essay “Imagine There's No Heaven: A Letter to the 6 Billionth Citizen.” It took the band -- Gavin Hayes (vocals, guitars), Drew Roulette (bass, samples), Mark Engles (guitars) and Dino Campanella (drums, keyboards) -- almost eight months of exchanging song-material via e-mail to finish CHUCKLES AND MR. SQUEEZY-- a process producer Dan The Automator (Gorillaz, Kasabian, etc.) was also involved in right from the early beginnings. His influence becomes most apparent in the songs “The Tent,” “Sun Goes Down” and “Before it Began” where he also took an active part in the songwriting. Even though there is a lot of variation in tones and tempo, singer Gavin Hayes sums up the general sound of CHUCKLES AND MR. SQUEEZY as “Dark Pop”: a dark undertone is giving the songs some kind of a contemplative self-analysis – but in the end the album is still characterized by its optimism. “There is a certain darkness to it,” Gavin agrees. “A lot of our music is ultimately positive but can be conceived as sad as well. It has these two sides that oppose each other, but manage to reconcile in the music.” Singer/guitarist/lyricist Gavin Hayes is an adopted child that recently found his biological family. Last year, he did some research online and ended up finding his half-sister on Facebook. Since then he has met about 30 cousins and half-cousins. His half-sister is also in the music business, interestingly enough. She’s an opera singer who has performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic, as well as other orchestras across the country. A few songs on the new album were written about Gavin’s personal experiences….“Before It Began” is inspired by meeting his biological family, while “The Thought Of Losing You” and “Upon Returning” are about Gavin’s adopted sister being at war and dealing with severe shell shock. The Dear Hunter will be touring in support of their forthcoming nine-EP collection, THE COLOR SPECTRUM, which is due out June 7 on Triple Crown Records in a variety of formats (Full Length CD, Limited Edition Deluxe Vinyl Box Set, Full Length Vinyl and each song as an individual digital version). THE COLOR SPECTRUM consists of songs inspired by the colors of the spectrum, specifically RED, ORANGE, YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, INDIGO and VIOLET, with WHITE and BLACK being included as bookends. Casey Crescenzo, mastermind of The Dear Hunter, completed the EPs while traveling the U.S., documenting every step of the process. The collection will feature collaborations with several producers and musicians, including Manchester Orchestra, Brendan Brown from The Receiving End of Sirens, Mike Watts (who has worked with As Tall As Lions and he mixed The Dear Hunter’s 2009 album, ACT III: LIFE AND DEATH), and Steve Haigler (Brand New, As Tall As Lions, Quicksand). Alternative Press had praised ACT III: LIFE AND DEATH: “Casey Crescenzo, the multi-talented fountainhead of The Dear Hunter, assembled a masterwork in ACT III: LIFE AND DEATH, ostensibly the midsection of his ongoing, six-act tale of a born-loser boy who falls for a whore. LIFE AND DEATH expands the Danny Elfman-does-gypsy-vaudeville sound pioneered on TDH’s two previous albums, dedicating more space to better explore the densely layered vocal swathes (‘Writing On A Wall’) and polyrhythmic grooves (‘In Cauda Venenum’) for which Crescenzo’s become known. He flexes some serious harmonic muscle on the lachrymose ‘Saved’ and the aching, album-closing trifecta ‘Son,’ ‘Father’ and ‘Life and Death.’ If you’d prefer to simply commence wetting your shorts, jump to the 4:15 mark of ‘Thief’ and listen through to the end of ‘Mustard Gas.’ F**king bravo, man. 4-1/2 out of 5 stars.” For dredg and The Dear Hunter sound clips, videos, and more, please check out www.dredg.com and www.tdhcolors

Charley Pride honored with road marker

Country music legend Charley Pride has been honored with his very own road marker on the Mississippi Country Music Trail. The ceremony was held Tuesday, March 29, at 1 p.m. on Highway 3 in Pride's hometown of Sledge, MS. A portion of the highway has also been renamed "Charley Pride Highway." "I'm honored and humbled at the same time. It was wonderful!" gushes Pride. "Who'd have thought that a kid who walked four miles to school and four miles home every day would ever get such a tribute?" Charley Frank Pride first garnered notice as a singer when music was just a sideline to his early baseball career. Taking a shot at what seemed an unlikely music career in Nashville, he went on to record 52 Top 10 singles, including 36 No. 1 hits. Singing honky tonk songs in his remarkable baritone, Pride has become a country music legend and the most successful African American artist of the genre. Born on March 18, 1938, Pride was one of 11 children and the outgoing son of poor sharecropper parents. Pride family entertainment focused on the radio – dramas, baseball broadcasts and his father Mack’s favorite, the Grand Ole Opry. Even though Pride would first pursue baseball as a career, music was never absent. He would sing for teammates on bus trips and make appearances in Montana clubs. After a Nashville audition launched Pride's career, from there it was a legendary story in the making. Pride’s greatest success came in the early- to mid- 1970s, when, at that time, he became the best-selling performer for RCA Records since Elvis Presley. He has won multiple awards and honors including: the Country Music Association's Entertainer of the Year (1971) and Male Vocalist of the Year (1971, 1972), the American Music Award's Favorite Country Album (1973) and Favorite Country Male Artist (1973, 1976). In 1972, Pride won a GRAMMY Award in the Best Country Vocal Performance category for “Charley Pride Sings Heart Songs.” He has also been inducted into Country Music Hall of Fame, the Grand Ole Opry and has his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Charley Pride has traveled a lot of highways and seen many mile markers, but his journey isn’t over yet. He continues to tour regularly and recently released his first studio album in five years, Choices (Music City Records). For additional information on Charley Pride, visit www.charleypride.com.

Emery releases new album

Post-hardcore veterans EMERY have just released We Do What We Want, their fifth studio album, via Tooth & Nail Records/Solid State. Their first new material since 2009’s ...In Shallow Seas We Sail, Emery is back in fine form with what many are calling the band’s heaviest album to date. Produced by guitarist Matt Carter and mixed by Jason Suecof (Whitechapel, August Burns Red, All That Remains) We Do What We Want further cements Emery as a mainstay in the heavy music genre, proof that quality and longevity go hand-in-hand. In its review of We Do What We Want, Alternative Press notes, “The first thing you really notice on We Do What We Want, is how heavy it is. Like, ridiculously heavy. Between the ubiquitous A Day To Remember-styled chugga-chugga breakdowns and frantically shrill screams, it’s the hardest performance the band have served up in a long time, if not ever. There’s also an appealing balance to the record, since not every track continues the aural beatdown; there are quieter moments, and they’re generally pretty fabulous…essential listening for fans.” DailyDischord raves, “Catchy hooks. Big choruses. Great harmonic vocals...It’s great to see a band grow without compromising the sound we all know and love." UnderTheGunReview calls the new album, “a beautiful, emotional and aggressive piece of art. (9 out of 10).” Sputnikmusic describes it as, “one of the most hard-hitting, honest and all around solid releases to date for Emery,” while MindEqualsBlown says, “(the) songs smash through your speakers in an inspired way…Emery do what they want, and they refuse to fade.” The deluxe edition of We Do What We Want (featuring two bonus tracks) is available on iTunes (http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/we-do-what-we-want-deluxe/id424466783) and AmazonMP3 (http://www.amazon.com/What-Want-Deluxe-Digital-Booklet/dp/B004RDCI4W). We Do What We Want is currently streaming in its entirety on AOL Music. Listen in here: http://music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds/#/6. A music video for the album opener, “The Cheval Glass” will premiere in the coming weeks. We Do What We Want tracklisting: 1. The Cheval Glass 2. Scissors 3. The Anchors 4. "The Dance Scene" coming to E! channel April 10

When the curtain rises and the lights shine on some of music’s biggest stars, she’s the one woman you don’t see in the spotlight. Yet Laurieann Gibson’s blood, sweat and tears are obvious everywhere on stage. This acclaimed choreographer and creative director has worked with A-listers from Lady Gaga to P. Diddy to Alicia Keys, making her one of the most powerful women in music today. Helmed by Ryan Seacrest Productions, "The Dance Scene" follows the lives of Gibson and her team of aspiring dancers and choreographers, (aka Team Boomkack), as they tear up the dance floor preparing for a variety of A-list performances around the world. Whether it's dancing with Katy Perry at a USO event, or performing in Keri Hilson’s latest music video, Gibson demands perfection from her performers, her team and herself. Grab your backstage pass for a look inside this exclusive and high energy world of dance and witness what it really takes to survive on stage…and in Laurieann’s studio when she challenges her crew to “dance for your lives, muffins!” The new E! series, “The Dance Scene,” premieres on April 10 at 10:30 PM only on E! Inside Laurieann's inner circle are: Richy - Gibson’s rock and right hand man who she discovered at a P. Diddy audition nine years ago; Sarah, Gibson’s assistant choreographer who is struggling with her on-again, off-again relationship with Paul, another of Laurieann's star dancers; Kherington, the newest member of the team who Laurieann pushes to the brink to try and unleash her star power; Paula, Kherington’s childhood friend and roommate, and fellow Boomkack dancer; and Lacee, Gibson’s overworked assistant who is dying to get her chance to perform with the crew. Audiences are also introduced to Laurieann's longtime boyfriend Joe Wilson, a hot shot music supervisor, and Marcia, her outspoken Jamaican mother. With Laurieann in the center ring of the circus that is her life there is never a dull moment for her and her “squirrels.”Viewers will get to witness the back-breaking work that goes into the eye-popping performances Laurieann creates. From the first rehearsal to the big night, Laurieann works her team “till their knuckles bleed” so there are no mistakes. A few of this season’s featured performances include the “Divas Salute the Troops” featuring Katy Perry, Keri Hilson and Jennifer Nettles, and a pre-Golden Globes performance by up-and-coming artists Paris and Destinee. Plus, Laurieann makes her directorial debut and directs the bold and controversial new Keri Hilson music video. As the season opens we see Gibson holding intense auditions for the upcoming “Divas Salute The Troops” performance. Hundreds of dancers line up to audition for the opportunity to be one of the select few chosen by Laurieann, as she narrows the field one-by-one. One young cast-off, Kherington, catches the dance diva’s eye, and she is invited to join Team Boomkack as an assistant. However, Laurieann believes Kherington must pay her dues, and earn her right to "dance on a great stage." Laurieann will repeatedly test Kherington's resolve; off-stage she sends her to buy hair extensions, makes her run for coffee and even asks Kherington to wash her dogs. On-stage Laurieann pushes their strained relationship to the brink, demanding perfection and total dedication in every dance step. Will Kherington be able to stand the heat in the studio, or will she crack under fire from BoomKack's leader? Throughout the series we also see glimpses of Team Boomkack’s complicated personal lives. After four years of dating in secret, Laurieann struggles about whether or not to finally go public with her main man/business partner, and for the first time begins to think seriously about whether motherhood is an option for her. Is it possible that she’s finally ready? Sarah has major drama two ex-boyfriends, and begins to wonder if her strained relationship with her father is the cause of all of her issues with men. Even Kherington begins a flirtation with a talented young singer/dancer that Laurieann has been mentoring. Adding to the drama is the underlying competition between all of her employees as they all must audition against each other to be cast by Laurieann for performances. The stakes are high for this group of dancers where one false move could cost them the job…and their reputation. With additional special appearances by Faith Evans, JoJo, Perez Hilton, Rick Ross, Dawn Richard, Six-D and Missy Modell, “The Dance Scene” is a fast paced, never-before-seen, VIP look at what it takes to make it in the toughest, most coveted dance studio in town. Can you take the heat? “The Dance Scene” is produced by Ryan Seacrest Productions. Ryan Seacrest serves as Executive Producer for RSP while Amber Mazzola also serves as Executive Producer.

Alan Robert working on film adaptation of "Wire Hangers"

Alan Robert, best known for being the bassist and creative force behind the respected hard rock group, Life of Agony, has formed a new film production company, called Wasted Talent Entertainment. The first project in the pipeline is a live-action film adaptation of Robert's own horror/crime graphic novel, Wire Hangers. Robert created, wrote and illustrated the book last year, which was published by award-winning comics publisher, IDW Publishing (30 Days of Night, Locke and Key, Zombies Vs. Robots). IDW's CEO, Ted Adams, is on board as the film's Executive Producer, with Robert and ZAM Entertainment's Jeff Mazzola (Descent, Under New Management, Kiss Me Again) attached as Producers. Teaser poster art for the film reveals Wire Hangers’ main character, Cypra, in full costume designed by Robert Hall of Almost Human FX (The Crazies, Paranormal Activity 2, Devil). Wasted Talent Entertainment is actively pursuing a short list of choice directors and screenwriters for the film. Visit the official movie website, at wirehangersmovie.com. In related news, IDW Publishing will release Robert’s new original horror comic mini-series, Crawl to Me, beginning monthly in July 2011. Crawl to Me is created, written and illustrated by Robert and boasts three unique covers per issue. Cover artists include Robert, Silent Hill: Past Life painter, Menton J. Matthews III and UK illustrator, David Lupton. Visit the official website, at crawltomecomic.com. Crawl to Me takes place in an isolated country town during the frigid winter months. The story centers on a young family as they cope with a series of disturbing events that force them to question their relationship, their faith and their very existence. When husband and wife, Ryan and Jessica, move into their first home together, strange things begin to occur. Half-eaten animals and other remains are found inside the basement’s crawl space. Their family dog disappears within the house. Distant voices are heard from beneath the floorboards. The couple begins to think that an evil entity is living inside their walls. Nothing can prepare them for what they’ll discover, but Ryan and Jessica soon realize that they must set aside all they believe to be true, in order to face their inevitable reality. "I couldn't have been happier to do Wire Hangers with Alan," said Chris Ryall, IDW's Chief Creative Officer, "and to see him stretch in different areas here is even more gratifying. This is a dark, psychologically affecting and surprisingly intimate story that I'm happy to foist on an unsuspecting comic-reading public. Put another way, if you survived Wire Hangers with any part of your psyche intact, Crawl to Me should help finish the job." “All my life, I’ve been told that I have a warped and twisted imagination. So, with these horror stories, I’m finally putting my morbid thoughts to good use,” says Robert. “When Wire Hangers was received so well by comic and horror fans last year, it really inspired me to continue creating stories in the medium. With Crawl to Me, I wanted to go even darker, but, don’t be fooled. This is not your typical, run-of-the-mill, haunted house story. It’s more of a thriller, filled with a ton of demented mind-games that will keep you guessing. Think of it like a Twilight Zone episode on steroids.” About Alan RobertIn 2010, Alan Robert’s debut comic series, Wire Hangers, received the Cover of the Year Award by ComicMonsters.com. The four-issue series was published monthly by IDW and later collected into a trade-paperback book. Robert's band, Life of Agony, recently celebrated their twenty-year anniversary with a successful tour, where the group performed in front of crowds as large as 500,000 people in Europe. A double-disc set entitled 20 Years Strong: River Runs Red - Live in Brussels (I Scream Records) is in stores worldwide. Robert is also wrapping up the writing process for his new Spoiler NYC album, titled Banned in 38 States. Robert is the lead vocalist/bassist for the New York based, punk-trio. Banned in 38 States will be the sophomore release for Spoiler NYC, following their 2007 debut, Grease Fire in Hell's Kitchen (SOS Records/I Scream Records). Two new exclusive tracks, produced by Grammy-Award winning producer, Ken Lewis (Lenny Kravitz, Beastie Boys, Fall Out Boy) can be heard online. Information about Robert’s bands can be found at LifeOfAgony.com and SpoilerNYC.com. For his latest comic news and downloadable low-res images, visit: WireHangersComic.com and CrawlToMeComic.com. Weerd Science (Josh Eppard) to release album and tour

After his eight-year daily battle with opiates, Josh Eppard has kicked his addiction and will be releasing his long awaited second full-length album SICK KIDS under his solo moniker WEERD SCIENCE on May 17, 2011. He will be telling his story throughout Spring on The British Invasion Tour and all Summer long on Vans Warped Tour (tour dates below). MC Lars will be releasing this collection of rhymes, raps, and beats on his independent label Horris Records, nearly six years after Weerd Science’s debut album Friends and Nervous Breakdowns. Sick Kids was co-produced by Eppard and Dave Parker (ex-Coheed and Cambria), tracked at Applehead Studios in Woodstock, NY and Dark World Studios in Kingston, NY, and mixed by Chris Bittner (Coheed and Cambria, Bad Brains). Sick Kids is a journey in the fragile mind of a drug addict – feelings of hurt, guilt, sadness, happiness, and twisted thoughts. During the making of Sick Kids, Eppard was back and forth with drugs - more back than forth. He explained, “Part of the guilt that haunted me daily was to look the people who were so excited to be making another Weerd Science record in the eyes and lie. I would convince them that I was sober and ready to work, but the truth is that I was shooting dope in the bathroom pretty much the entire session.” I n no way does Sick Kids follow a specific theme, but the songs that have nothing to do with drugs were his way of running from the truth. Deep down inside, this album was his cry for help. Drugs didn’t necessarily enhance his creative mind, so he kept Sick Kids as-is. “It would’ve been vastly different if I was sober,” he continues. “It would also be an injustice to my struggle with addiction to gloss my performances.” Realizing when he was sober that the more good people he knew became distant during his addiction. “You open your eyes one day and ask yourself, 'Why am I in a car with two homeless guys and a hooker at 4am?' The people in your life who were honest and decent are gone,” he reflects. After two years of being clean, he no longer gets the urge like he used to, back when he had dreams of getting high and would have to wake up in the middle of the night to shake it off. “It’s such a great feeling to be beyond this… I know what it’s like to not want to live and literally hold a knife to your wrist and pray to God that this time you’ll have the courage to slice.” As a drummer, Eppard has seen the ups and downs of the music industry first hand, which was even the topic of his Weerd Science debut Friends and Nervous Breakdowns (Equal Vision). He began his career drumming in the band 3 (Universal) in 1992 prior to joining Coheed and Cambria (Columbia) in 2001. After parting ways with the band in 2006 and taking time to clean up, Eppard’s love of drumming drew him back to his current band Terrible Things (Universal Motown). Opting to release his debut on an independent label, Eppard confides, “In my opinion, a label in this day and age can’t offer me anything as an artist. Labels fail more than they succeed. Why should I sign a deal where they have their hands in my touring revenue, merch, and my everything when all they can offer me is a fancy building and some free lunch every few months?” Eppard wanted his fans to be directly involved with this album, so he created a KickStarter campaign, and within five days, he reached his goal of $4,000 dollars. Currently, he's surpassed his goal by nearly $2,000 and there is still seven days left. “Weerd Science can be as big as the world wants it to be,” he surmises. “I’m tired of boring music and I’m not following a system designed to limit what’s available to us as consumers.” WEERD SCIENCEtour dates w/ Heavy Metal Kings Apr 16 The Note West Chester, PA The British Invasion Tour May 11 Railway Winchester, ENG May 12 Academy 2 Oxford, ENG May 13 Furnace Swindon, ENG May 14 The Grove Tavern Wimbledon, ENG May 15 The iBAR Bournemouth, ENG May 16 Cavern Exeter, ENG May 17 Clwb Ifor Bach Cardiff, WAL May 18 Roadmender Northampton, ENG May 19 Lock 42 Leicester, ENG May 20 Vivaz Scarborough, ENG May 21 Corporation Sheffield, ENG May 22 Rock City Disco 2 Nottingham, ENG May 23 ABC2 Glasgow, SCT May 24 Tunnels Abderdeen, SCT May 25 Shipping Forecast Liverpool, ENG May 26 Ruby Lounge Manchester, ENG May 27 Cherries CafĂ© Bridgewater, ENG May 28 Slam Dunk Festival Leeds, ENG May 29 Slam Dunk Festival Hatfield, ENG May 30 Slam Dunk Festival Birmingham, ENG Vans Warped Tour Jun 24 Superpages.com Center Dallas, TX Jun 25 The Showgrounds Houston, TX Jun 26 AT&T Center San Antonio, TX Jun 29 Pan American Center Las Cruces, NM Jun 30 The Plaza Hotel Las Vegas, NV Jul 01 Pomona Fairplex Pomona, CA Jul 02 Shoreline Amphitheatre Mountain View, CA Jul 03 Seaside Park Ventura, CA Jul 06 Sandstone Amphitheatre Kansas City, KS Jul 07 Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre Noblesville, IN Jul 08 Comerica Park Detroit, MI Jul 09 First Midwest Bank Tinley Park, IL Jul 10 Canterbury Park Shakopee, MN Jul 12 Darien Lake PAC Darien Center, NY Jul 13 Comcast Center Mansfield, MA Jul 14 Toyota Pavilion Scranton, PA Jul 15 Arrow Hall Mississauqa, ON Jul 16 Parc Jean Drapeau Montreal, QC Jul 17 The Comcast Theatre Hartford, CT Jul 19 Marcus Amphitheatre Milwaukee, WI Jul 20 Time Warner Amphitheatre Cleveland, OH Jul 21 Susquehanna Bank Center Camden, NJ Jul 22 First Niagara Pavilion Burgettstown, PA Jul 23 Nassau Coliseum Uniondale, NY Jul 24 Monmouth Park Racetrack Oceanport, NJ Jul 26 Merriweather Post Pavilion Columbia, MD Jul 27 Verizon Amphitheatre Virginia Beach, VA Jul 28 Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre Charlotte, NC Jul 29 Firestone Orlando, FL Jul 30 Cruzan Amphitheatre West Palm Beach, FL Jul 31 Vinoy Park St. Petersburg, FL Aug 01 Lakewood Amphitheatre Atlanta, GA Aug 02 Riverbend Music Center Cincinnati, OH Aug 03 Verizon Amphitheatre Maryland Heights, MO Aug 04 Westfair Amphitheatre Council Buffs, IA Aug 05 Invesco Field Denver, CO Aug 06 Utah State Fairgrounds Salt Lake City, UT Aug 07 Cricket Wireless Pavilion Phoenix, AZ Aug 09 Cricket Amphitheatre Chula Vista, CA Aug 10 Home Depot Center Carson, CA Aug 11 Sleep Train Amphitheatre Wheatland, CA Aug 12 Idaho Center Amphitheatre Nampa, ID Aug 13 Gorge Amphitheatre George, WA Aug 14 Washington County Fair Hillsboro, OR Sick Kids Pre-Order Link: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/horrisrecords/weerd-science-sick-kids www.weerdscience.net www.facebook.com/weerdscience www.twitter.com/realjosheppard www.horrisrecords.com
