Garden Conservancy Open Day coming to Pasadena in May

The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Program in Los Angeles County features six private gardens open to the public on Sunday, May 1 in Pasadena, and six more on Sunday, May 15 in Brentwood and Santa Monica. Admission to each private garden is $5 or $25 for all six gardens on each date, Open Days are rain or shine, and no reservations are required. Call 1-888-842-2442, or visit www.opendaysprogram.org for more information.

On May 1, visitors may begin the Pasadena Open Day at the La Casita del Arroyo Garden, 177 South Arroyo Boulevard, Pasadena, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (each garden open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) for maps and discount admission tickets. The Pasadena Open Day features six new gardens that complement the twentieth-century architecture of the properties. These include a restored 1917 original Firehouse with a sustainable urban garden, a 1906 four-acre Greene and Greene estate with magnificent views of the Arroyo Seco, and four classic Mediterranean gardens, several updated by noted local garden designers.

On May 15, visitors may begin the Los Angeles Open Day at the Grow Native Nursery Westwood, Davis Avenue, Westwood, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (each garden open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) for maps and discount admission tickets. The Los Angeles Open Day features six gardens in Brentwood and Santa Monica including one belonging to the legendary Julie Newmar of Catwoman fame. Revisit a garden from a past Open Day that has been completely re-imagined by the Wirtz brothers of Belgium, admire an Italian-inspired family garden, or explore lush English style parterres, and also see the work of more local designers.

These Open Days gardens are featured in the 2011 Open Days Directory; a soft-cover book that includes detailed driving directions and vivid descriptions written by their owners. The directory includes garden listings in eighteen states and costs $21.95 including shipping.

The Garden Conservancy introduced the Open Days Program in 1995 as a means of introducing the public to gardening, providing easy access to outstanding examples of design and horticultural practice, and proving that exceptional American gardens are still being created.

The Open Days Program is America’s only national private garden-visiting program, and is made possible by the work of hundreds of volunteers nationwide. Visit the Garden Conservancy and its Open Days Program online at www.opendaysprogram.org.
