Mx. Justin Vivian Bond at REDCAT April 12 and 13

REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater) announces the addition of a special two-night engagement by a beloved member of both the downtown New York music scene and the international queer avant garde, Mx. Justin Vivian Bond. On the heels of the release of Bond's first full-length solo album Dendrophile on April 4th, REDCAT joins The Bowery Ballroom (New York) and the Castro Theatre (San Francisco) in presenting the singer, songwriter and performance artist. Mx. Justin Vivian Bond: Dendrophile will be held at REDCAT on Tuesday, April 12 and Wednesday, April 13, 2011. Tickets are now on sale through the REDCAT Box Office, or by phone at 213 237-2800 or online at www.redcat.org.

Acclaimed by The New Yorker as an "artful, gender-bending, truth-telling illusionist,"
Mx. Justin Vivian Bond and a live band featuring Thomas Bartlett (piano), Jack Petruzelli (guitar), Brad Albetta (bass), and David Berger (percussion), perform songs from the artist's first solo CD, Dendrophile. Celebrating a love of nature that goes beyond a simple walk in the woods, Bond wrote most of the original songs while straddling a moss-covered log on a mountain in Tennessee. Mx. Bond's original songs are complemented by singular interpretations of works by Nina Simone, Karen Carpenter, Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell.

A spellbinding performer, Mx. Bond spins a magical web that threads together many artistic passions and influences—from early '70s folk-pop to protest songs to jazz standards—influenced by such icons as Marianne Faithfull, Judy Collins, Phoebe Snow, Harry Nilsson, Emrnylou Harris, Sandy Denny and Odetta.

Sex, gender and sexuality are foremost themes of Dendrophile, and are an important part of Bond's preoccupation with nature. Bond is particularly interested in queer, and more specifically transgendered identity, embraced through a mixed-gender new name, Mx. Justin Vivian Bond, and the replacement of gender-specific pronouns with the more expansive "V".

Recording is just one part of an interdisciplinary career for which Mx. Bond has garnered Obie, Bessie and Ethyl Eichelberger Awards, and a Tony Award nomination. V was named one of the Top 40 Favorite New Yorkers by Time Out New York and listed as one of England's 50 Funniest People by Time Out London. As one-half of the performance duo Kiki and Herb, V toured the world, headlining Carnegie Hall twice, and performing at The Sydney Opera House and London's Queen Elizabeth Hall. Mx. Bond also starred in the Tony-nominated Broadway show Kiki and Herb Alive on Broadway and in the Off-Broadway Coup de Theatre.

Mx. Justin Vivian Bond: Dendrophile will be presented at REDCAT Tuesday, April 12 & Wednesday, April 13, 2011. Curtain for the performances is 8:30 pm. Tickets are $25 and available at www.redcat.org or by calling 213 237-2800. REDCAT is located at 631 West 2nd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012 on the corner of West 2nd and Hope Streets, inside the Walt Disney Concert Hall complex.

Mx. Justin Vivian Bond will also be performing in New York on April 5, 2011 at the Bowery Ballroom and in San Francisco on April 9, 2011 at Castro Theatre.
