Pasadena Master Chorale in concert April 9

“IT HAS BECOME ALTOGETHER SPLENDID”

Pasadena Master Chorale presents Brahms Requiem in its entirety

The choir will perform Brahms’ own arrangement of the work for choir and two pianists. Guest artists include soprano Krystle Casey, bass-baritone Scott Graff, and pianists Shawn Kirchner and Alan Steinberger

Saturday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. at La Crescenta Presbyterian Church in La Crescenta-Montrose

When Johannes Brahms completed his arrangement of Ein Deutsches Requiem for choir and two pianists, he wrote to his publisher: “I have devoted myself to a noble occupation: arranging my immortal work so that it can also be enjoyed by four-handed souls. Now it cannot perish. What is more, it has become altogether splendid.”

Music lovers will have an opportunity to hear this version of the Requiem in its entirety when the Pasadena Master Chorale (PMC) presents Ein Deutsches Requiem on Saturday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m. at La Crescenta Presbyterian Church in La Crescenta-Montrose. Joining the choir are soprano Krystle Casey and bass- baritone Scott Graff, accompanied by pianists Shawn Kirchner and Alan Steinberger.

Jeffrey Bernstein, Artistic Director of PMC agrees wholeheartedly with Brahms’ assessment of the four-handed Requiem. “Ein Deutsches Requiem has become one of the most popular choral works in the repertoire and with good reason,” says Bernstein, a composer himself who has conducted over 30 major works and led choirs on over a dozen tours of three continents. “It is an incredibly emotional work, and the choir sings throughout – carrying the audience by turns through great sorrow, anger, redemption, joy and healing.”

Tickets for Ein Deutsches Requiem are reasonably priced at $20 and may be purchased by visiting the Pasadena Master Chorale’s website, www.pasadenamasterchorale.org, through any Chorale member, or at the door. Complete details on concerts, ticket prices and venue locations can be found on the website as well. Recorded information is available by phone at 626.208.0009.
