At the Mountain View, Calif. stop of the Ozzfest tour last month, National Public Radio affiliate KQED-FM interviewed the Taiwanese band ChthoniC, the first-ever Asian extreme metal act to take part in hard rock's longest-running annual tour. The interview, which first aired on KQED's nationally syndicated weekly "Pacific Time" program on Aug. 2, can be streamed on the station's website at http://www.kqed.org/programs/program-landing.jsp?progID=RD37 (click "Listen [RealMedia stream]").
The seven-minute piece features vocalist Freddy Lim discussing the inspiration behind the group's current "UNlimited Taiwan" tour, as well as interviews with a Taiwanese information minister and even several fans who attended the Mountain View Ozzfest.
Additionally, ChthoniC’s guitarist Jesse and bassist Doris have signed endorsement deals with Dunlop, who will be manufacturing official ChthoniC guitar picks. The picks will be stamped with Doris and Jesse’s English signatures. Additionally, Dunlop will also produce picks with the band members’ signatures in their native Taiwanese!
“Since I started playing bass and guitar, I’ve only used Dunlop's picks,” says Doris. “They fit my fingers perfectly, and I'm glad that I can use them as much as I want now.”
According to singer Freddy Lim, “Jesse has spent thousands of dollars on Dunlop's products through the years. He’s incredibly excited to now be sponsored by Dunlop.”
Although the band's image might recall such Scandinavian black metal legends as Dimmu Borgir and Immortal, in truth ChthoniC's visual inspiration comes from Taiwanese folklore, in which corpse paint allows certain deities the power to judge good and evil. ChthoniC has been pushing boundaries throughout its career, and having singlehandedly launched an extreme metal scene in their home country, the group now sets its sights squarely on the rest of the world.
Taiwan's premier metal band, ChthoniC are right in the middle of their first American tour this summer. Listen to ChthoniC’s NPR interview at
