“The Truth About Cats, Dogs, and Lawn Chemicals” is a new web-based video series that could star your very own beloved Fido or Boots. The first three episodes have been posted to iTunes and YouTube and at catsdogslawns.org
The first two episodes examine the significance of warning signs and labels - simple indications that lawn chemicals can put pets at risk for chemical exposure illness. Members of the viewing audience were invited to participate with stories of their own pets and lawn care. As a result, the filmmakers received stories from dog owners who believe their beloved pets died from exposure to the ingredients in pesticides or lawn chemicals. The third episode, released this week, is a profile of three of those stories.
Several more episodes will be released this summer – with plenty of opportunity for additional pet owner participation.
Bernadette Giblin, an organic landcare professional, serves as the host of the internet series. The story line also revolves around Dr. Dobetter, a call-in veterinarian concerned about the risk of toxic exposure who has a call-in radio show. The callers include people who love and care for their animals, and in a twist of magical realism, the animals themselves speak their minds, presenting their uniquely perceptive and humorous vantage point.
Producer/Writer Jody Shapiro says, “Of course cats and dogs can’t talk, but it is up to us humans to ensure a safe environment for our pets and our children who spend so much time on lawns.”
Co-producer Sanford Lewis, who is also an environmental attorney, added, “Especially in the aftermath of the pet food poisoning crisis, it’s unfortunate that many people believe that if lawn care products are allowed by regulators to be sold or applied, that they are safe for our pets and the environment. But as we’re learning as we produce this series, there is plenty of potential for these products to harm our children, our pets, and the environment.”
Throughout the summer and into the fall, the filmmakers will continue soliciting stories, photos and videos from pet owners. Experts will also present safer alternatives for a happier, healthier world for pets and humans.
At the end of the series, a DVD will be produced for general distribution to pet owners and veterinarians.
