Southern California Indian Center Pow Wow canceled

The Southern California Indian Center (SCIC) has experienced a major impact with the recent economic downturn, leading to cancellation of the largest Pow Wow celebration in Southern California. Many of the SCIC Pow Wow’s services are made possible through generous donations and vendor registrations, which have paled this year in comparison to previous years.

“We regret having to cancel this year’s Pow Wow and do so with a heavy heart. We have been very appreciative of the Autry National Center’s support in hosting the event; however, our resources have dwindled and as a result we are unable to sponsor Pow Wow, an event that has come to exemplify our most important cultural service to our community,” said Paula Starr, Executive Director, SCIC.

SCIC will have a presence at the Autry on Saturday and Sunday, August 1 and 2, to discuss the organization’s mission and goals with the public. In addition, the Autry will continue its scheduled related programming, including theater company Native Voices at the Autry’s “Young Native Voices at the Autry: Sharing Our Stories,” with two free performances on Saturday, August 1. Docents will offer scheduled tours with a Native American focus throughout the weekend.
