Manisha Shahane at the Mint Dec. 6

Alt-world songstress Manisha Shahane will host release festivities at The Mint for her second album, When Parallel Lines Meet. Shahane describes her music as “alternative world”: folk-jazz singer-songwriter fare with a global twist. Her sound draws on her roots in southern Virginia, her East Indian heritage, as well as her experience in a variety of genres, resulting in “music of this universe”, a lyric she penned for the album’s opening track, Girls Gone World. Shahane, who will turn 40 at the end of November, will also celebrate her entry into this venerable decade at the event.

When Parallel Lines Meet showcases an array of instrumentation, with exceptional performances delivered by Brahim Fribgane (oud), Mark Simcox (cello), Kevin Barry (lap steel guitar), Chris Brenne (guitar), George Ruckert (sarod), Iyeoka Ivie Okoawo (spoken word), and Akili Jamal Haynes (trumpet, bass clarinet, tenor sax, trombone). Returning from Shahane’s Peace in Progress album (2004) are Blake Newman (upright bass), Jerry Leake (tabla/multi-percussion), and Dominique Gagne (flute). Members of her Los Angeles-based trio – Mark San Filippo and Geoff Rakness – are also introduced, as are the voices of children.

Shahane began the celebration of her new album earlier this year at Shablul Jazz Club in Israel, where she found inspiration for the track “Into the Valley”. Shahane brings over a decade of experience as a performing songwriter to this project featuring her as a singer, songwriter, pianist, composer, arranger and co-producer, working alongside Boston-based Daniel Cantor of Notable Productions. Cantor recently added African Underground Vol.1 (Nomadic Wax) and a cut for In the Name of Love: Africa Salutes U2 (Shout Factory) to his numerous production credits.
