Bilingual singer-songwriter Gaby Moreno draws musical influence from her Guatemalan heritage and affinity for 20s, 30s, 40s soul/R&B on her sophomore release Illustrated Songs, available April 5th independently. Gaby will celebrate the release at the Bootleg Theater in Los Angeles on Friday, April 29.
Produced by Gaby and Ryan Freeland (Ray Lamontagne), Illustrated Songs features "No Regrets," a bossa nova sung in Spanish and English, driven by the acoustic bass of David Piltch and Gaby's mischievous vocal; "Fin" a tropical groove that blends a 50s country waltz with Hawaiian lap steel, and mariachi guitars, "Y Tu Sombra" a ballad accented by Aymanns' subtle percussion accents, the smoky cabaret number "Daydream By Design, and the R&B inspired rocker "Mess A Good Thing" that allows Gaby to flex her vocal prowess.
Born and raised in Guatemala, it was a fateful trip to New York City that molded her musical interest. Inspired by artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, and Aretha Franklin, Gaby immersed herself in blues, R&B and soul, and learned to speak English by singing.
"I learned English from blues records. I'd read the lyrics, then go to my dictionary. In school, we studied basic English, but the records made me interested in learning it and singing it."
Illustrated Songs is the follow up to her debut Still The Unknown, of which NPR.com predicted “...is a promising debut that indicates she won’t go unnoticed for much longer.” And in 2009, Latina Magazine named Gaby one of the “Best In Latin Music..”
