Sun Rai, who is Los Angeles-based Rai Thistlethwayte, has just released his debut EP, "Pocket Music," exclusively on Bandcamp starting today. The artist is encouraging fans to pay what they want for the release for one week. Then, starting June 11, the EP will be available through all major digital distributors. Additionally, FILTER Magazine is currently offering an exclusive download of " Til The Lights Come On (Live at Loop Studios, Perth)". Sun Rai, who has been coined "Pure 70's AM Gold" by KCRW's Ann Litt, will be kicking off his North American tour with Norway's Bernhoft.
Thistlethwayte is the product of a musical family. Born to a classically trained pianist mother and rock-obsessed father, he has managed to bring both elements into his professional career. On one hand, Rai has his father's sensibilities, as he is the frontman for the Australian rock band, Thirsty Merc. The band went 2x-platinum and received four ARIA Award nominations with their debut release. On the other hand, he is his mother's son, bringing classical piano and jazz elements into his music. After Rai moved to Los Angeles, he paired with Aaron Sterling (Regina Spektor, John Mayer) to develop his most recent sound for Sun Rai. Sun Rai gets to the heart of the matter and delivers a soulful breath of fresh air.
The debut from Sun Rai is the artist's most open, organic and poignant creation yet. The palpable energy of the EP's first focus track, "San Francisco Street," taps into a natural analog power reminiscent of the seventies. However, it's no standard throwback, as the song is very much a product of this century. "San Francisco Street" is song for dreamers and anyone looking to start a new chapter in his/her life.
