In the realm of modern music, acoustic guitar is usually associated with either folk players or rockers who are momentarily trying to show their sensitive side. But then along comes a gentleman like Peppino D'Agostino, who is unquestionably one of the most diverse acoustic players on the scene. As one of the least conventional acoustic players, D'Agostino's style incorporates both standard and unusual tunings as well as unique fingering and percussive effects. A pair of releases - 'Crossing Borders,' with the World Guitar Ensemble and a collaboration with Stef Burns, 'Bayshore Road' - have been issued recently, while D'Agostino is currently preparing an all-new solo album which will soon be released, and will not only feature his world class guitar playing, but vocals in both Italian and English as well.
A native of Italy, D'Agostino arrived in the U.S. in 1984, and is fluent in almost every conceivable style (jazz, classical, Beatles standards, prog rock, Irish music, Brazilian music, traditional Italian folk music, etc.). Subsequently, a steady stream of recordings appeared - including a pair for Steve Vai's Favored Nations label - 2002's 'Every Step of the Way' and 2005's aforementioned 'Bayshore Road.' Additionally, D'Agostino has shared the stage with such noted guitarists as Leo Kottke, Doc Watson, Chet Atkins, Badi Assad, Tommy Emmanuel, Martin Taylor, Laurindo Almeida, Michael Hedges, David Bromberg, David Grisman, Eric Johnson, John Lee Hooker and Egberto Gismonti, as well as ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuru. Last year D'Agostino and Burns performed at the prestigious Montreal International Jazz Festival in Montreal, Canada. Also, D'Agostino is a master clinician, who regularly conducts workshops.
D'Agostino's compositions and chops continue to impress, as he was voted "Best Acoustic Guitarist" by the readers in the 2007 Guitar Player Magazine Reader's Choice Awards. Further accolades continue to pour in, as Guitar One Magazine said "Peppino's technical prowess, lyrical artistry on the steel string and unique stylings seem almost impossible to have come from one guitar," while the San Francisco Chronicle raved that Peppino is "A poetÅ among the best talents around."
