Thelonious Dub celebrates 100th gig and has tons more

Thelonious Dub an instrumental trio founded by guitarist Joe Bartone in 2007 has reached the 100 gig mark in just 12 months. In addition to this milestone, the group is also proud to announce a weekly residency at the new Brenart Wine Bar and Restaurant in Pasadena. They will play there each weekend on either Friday or Saturday night depending on other bookings.

Bartone notes, “I can’t believe it’s been a year of Thelonious Dub and we have already played 100 gigs! Now with our residency at Brenart we’ll be well on our way to 200 gigs. I guess folks are digging our complete misunderstanding of both jazz and reggae.”

Thelonious Dub play a unique mix of improvised jazz, dub reggae and jam band styles. Bartone is supported by John von Seggern on bass and Sean Rainey on drums. They are frequently joined on gigs by various friends and guests on sax, guitar and other instruments.

Recently interviewed for LAist.com, one of LA’s most popular culture web sites, Bartone explains how they came to play their unique band of dub jazz and on so many gigs. Check it out at http://laist.com/2008/09/14/laist_interview_thelonious_dub.php.

Most of Thelonious Dub’s live performance features classic tunes by Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, and Charles Mingus, along with witty pop and rock covers (Coldplay’s “Clocks”, “When the World is Running Down” by the Police among others) and originals.

Bartone notes, “my unorthodox style is a direct result of my limitations and the many ways I strove to compensate for those shortcomings. I am proof that art is freedom through creation and it is the process that gives my life meaning.”

Modeled after the "Modern Lounge" sound, T-Dub draws from groups and artists like Bill Frisell, John Scofield, Massive Attack, Thievery Corporation and Sly & Robbie. To pursue this sound, Thelonious Dub adds electric sitar and a large array of guitar effects.

Since their founding in 2007 the band has played over 100 shows at a vast range of venues around Los Angeles. In October they will perform at their typical wide variety of rooms and events, see below or at http://www.myspace.com/theloniousdub for their schedule:
