"Light of the Angels" to kick off special events at Nokia

Los Angeles’ biggest, brightest and newest free-to-the-public holiday celebration will kick-off in NOKIA Plaza L.A. LIVE with a celebrity-hosted ceremony on Thursday, December 4 when “Light of the Angels” makes its world premiere. The special performance kicks-off a month-long schedule of special events, concerts, sporting events, restaurant openings and community programs taking place within the four million square foot sports, residential and entertainment district in downtown Los Angeles adjacent to STAPLES Center.

Throughout December, artists such as Celine Dion, Oasis, John Mayer, George Lopez, Rick Springfield, B.B. King, Robin Thicke and the Stone Temple Pilots will headline ticketed concerts at venues located on the “campus” including Club NOKIA, NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE, the Conga Room and STAPLES Center which also will host Disney’s “High School Musical on Ice” and “Dancing With the Stars”. A number of free-to-the-public events will also take place within L.A. LIVE in addition to the free nightly shows of “Light of the Angels” on NOKIA Plaza from December 4-31, including Paperback Hero (December 6) and Art in Action (December 11-14).

LIGHT OF THE ANGELS
“Light of the Angels,” hosted nightly on NOKIA Plaza L.A. LIVE until December 31, will have its World Premiere December 4 with a surprise celebrity-hosted ceremony. The specially commissioned production combines more than one million lights, holiday music, 11 giant video screens, live performances and special guests. “Light of the Angels” is a seven-minute multi-dimensional light display combining holiday music and advanced techno-artistry and includes more than 10,000 holiday images. The show is free to the public with four nightly performances taking place on the hour beginning at 7:00 p.m.

“Light of the Angels” includes a 54-foot tree covered with 11,382 energy efficient XL Sphere lights – the only 360 video light source in the world. Each of the XL Sphere lights has 42 individually programmable LEDs; together these 462,000 LEDs make the surface of the tree a one-of-a-kind video screen upon which video, still images and lighting effects will be displayed. The centerpiece is 40 feet in diameter and weighs 37,500 pounds.
The contemporary steel, digital, holiday tree was designed by Brian Stonestreet, a two-time Primetime Emmy winner for “Outstanding Art Direction for a Variety, Music Program or Special.”

DISTRICT DÉCOR
Guests attending events at L.A. LIVE are greeted by 50 ten-foot angels comprised of 75,000 lights and “snowfall” LED lights on 150 trees. The district is emblematic of the resurgence of Downtown Los Angeles into a thriving entertainment community, filled with light and holiday joy.

PLAYING FOR CHANGE
Also contributing to “Light of the Angels” is PLAYING FOR CHANGE, a Los Angeles-based production company and non-profit foundation that specializes in “Connecting the World Through Music.” Playing for Change will be premiering their collaborative cover of Bob Marley's, inspirational anthem, “One Love” featuring local musicians of all ethnic backgrounds in their own neighborhoods all over Los Angeles. This production of “One Love” furthers the mission of the Playing for Change Foundation revealing, through video and song, how music transcends all boundaries. During the “Light of the Angels,” the individual performance videos will have been compiled and will be broadcast throughout the L.A. LIVE Plaza on opening night and beyond.
