ASPCA seeks help in supporting animal neglect jail time law
ASPCA Urgent Alert
Dear California Advocates,
California Assembly Bill 2012 will increase the amount of jail time a judge may issue to a person convicted of animal neglect. This ASPCA-supported bill has already passed both houses of the California Legislature by large margins with bipartisan support. Governor Schwarzenegger has less than a month to sign this important legislation into state law.
Animal neglect is a form of cruelty that is both more insidious and more common than the beatings, fights and acts of torture that tend to grab headlines. Neglect causes extreme, prolonged suffering-sometimes resulting in death-and is just as serious an offense as intentional physical cruelty. The maximum jail sentence for a neglect conviction in California is currently six months. AB 2012 would raise that maximum sentence to 12 months, bringing the penalty for animal neglect in line with the current penalty for intentional cruelty.
What You Can Do
Please be the animals' voice and contact Governor Schwarzenegger to urge him to sign AB 2012 into law. You can reach his office at (916) 445-2841.
Visit the ASPCA Advocacy Center today for some tips on what to say when you call, and remember to thank the person you speak with for considering your views.

The Hours to release first full-length US album
On October 5 Adeline Records will release The Hours’ first full-length US album, It’s Not How You Start, It’s How You Finish, to all digital outlets, with a deluxe edition exclusive to iTunes.
The album sees The Hours put their own twist on Brit-pop with songs fueled by soaring choruses and powerful ballads. Produced and mixed by the band and renowned producer Flood (U2, Depeche Mode), the album features the band’s iconic “Ali In The Jungle” – heard in Nike’s 2010 Winter Olympic TV / web campaign “The Human Chain” and two new songs, “1000 Years” and “Born To Be”.
The Hours, one of the most dynamic and provocative rock ensembles on the London music scene today, got their start when singer-songwriter-guitarist Antony Genn (whose BritPop credentials include stints with Pulp and Elastica), and multi-instrumentalist Martin Slattery (whose resume includes playing with Shaun Ryder's Black Grape) formed The Mescaleros with then-former Clash-frontman Joe Strummer in 1999. The Mescaleros performed their first gig in Genn's hometown of Sheffield in June 1999 and Antony (who'd been all of 8 when London Calling first hit the record store racks) co-wrote and co-produced Rock Art and the X Ray Style, the highly-acclaimed album that marked Strummer's long-awaited return to music.
The Hours’ music has inspired contributions from a variety of high-profile artists. Damien Hirst, the controversial post-modern UK artist, threw his support behind the band and developed the representative clock-eyed skull logo used in The Hours’ artwork and onstage set. An exclusive video for “See The Light”, featuring actress Sienna Miller and directed by the legendary Tony Kaye (American History X), will be serviced to video and online outlets.
Confirmed standard tracklisting:
1. Ali In The Jungle

Middle Eastern Comedy Festival in L.A. in October
The Middle East was once a virtual hotbed of artistic creation, for poetry, art, and music, and then it virtually stopped. Enter notorious funnymen Ronnie Khalil and Ryan P. Shrime, co-founders of the Middle Eastern Comedy Festival, who are encouraging fellow Middle Easterners to keep the art world alive by creating workshops and a platform for aspiring young comedians, actors, writers and directors.
Over the past year alone, this dynamic duo organized two sketch comedy classes at no cost to all Middle Easterners. The classes were an instant success and had more than 20 graduates attend. As a result, Khalil and Shrime are planning a stand-up workshop in order to foster a ‘community of artists’ in the Middle Eastern community, where art has never been fully encouraged or practiced.
Khalil explains: “From a young age we are encouraged to be engineers, doctors and lawyers, there seems to be little encouragement for more artistic ventures, however recently there has been a growth with films, comedians and performers from the region expanding internationally, Ryan and I are at the forefront.”
Khalil and Shrime's brainchild, the Middle Eastern Comedy Festival, is set to take place for its second year October 4-7, 2010 in Los Angeles (www.mideastcomedyfest.com). The festival is comprised of four back to back nights of stand-up, held at the Laugh Factory on Sunset Blvd, Hollywood and sketch comedy featuring performers all from Middle Eastern backgrounds, including Arabs, Israelis, Persians, Afghanis and more, being held at the Acme Comedy Theatre, 135 N. La Brea Ave, Los Angeles.
The pair, who are fondly known as the ‘Happy Arabs’, initially met in New York during a comedy festival in 2005 and swiftly found a common goal, changing the way Middle Easterners were perceived in the entertainment industry. Khalil and Shrime want to repel the notion that middle easterners are merely those who ride magic carpets and act as genies in a bottle. They are fighting for their community to succeed and flourish as real entertainers with International likeability and widespread appeal.
“We want to drive artists to pursue their dreams and help them grow within their chosen careers," comments Shrime: “So often the Middle East culture perceives comedians as clowns and dancers as secondary citizens. What we are doing is giving people and opportunity to break all those perceptions by giving them free classes, a venue to perform, a community to support them and bounce ideas off of, and a chance to be respected in the industry.”

“The artists we pick to perform at our showcase event will have an opportunity to make the connection that could change their careers,” Hello Music President John Boyle said. “Over 120,000 music aficionados looking for up and coming artists come to CMJ every year.”
Artists interested in playing at the showcase must upload music and prequalify at www.hellomusic.com by September 10. It is free to sign up and submit.
Hello Music will also be exhibiting in the NYU Kimmel “Loft Lounge” as part of the festival.
Hello Music does much more than help musicians get gigs. With dozens of opportunity partners, the company has placed songs in video games, ad campaigns and on Internet radio; pitches tracks to music supervisors and record labels; and even gets artists discounts on services like digital distribution.
Joining the Hello Music community is simple and free, and the Hello Music A&R team sends comprehensive feedback to every artist who uploads a release. It’s a win-win: musicians get feedback and opportunities, and Hello Music partners hear the best unsigned music in the world.
The CMJ Music Marathon will take place in venues around New York City October 19-23; for more information about the event, go to www.cmj.com/marathon.

My Jerusalem to release album
The collective now known as My Jerusalem met through critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Jeff Klein, who played with each of them in his travels as a solo artist. Jeff met guitarist Dave Rosser, a touring member of the Twilight Singers through producer, Mike Napolitano. Bassist Ashley Dzerigian was in Great Northern and toured with Ed Harcourt. Drummer Cully Symington was in bands like Cursive and Bishop Allen and tracked the Gutter Twins album. Rick Nelson, who plays violin, viola, cello and keyboards in the band, is a longtime member of the Polyphonic Spree and St. Vincent. Matt Bricker, also a member of the Polyphonic Spree, had been playing with The Low Lows.
The band’s debut album, Gone For Good, will be released on 00:02:59 Records thru Sony/RED on October 26th. Set for release in the UK next week, the album has already had major airplay on BBC2 and BBC6 Radio.
My Jerusalem pins Klein’s razor sharp wit against a lush backdrop of strings and horns, which is driven home by a beat that is sometimes even reminiscent of Bauhaus. There is a lot of genre mixing when it comes to the bands offerings. One song can be delivered through a pulsing wounded whisper, while the next can be a schizophrenic, headphone dance-party such as "Sleepwalking" to which the band likens to "Abba on ecstasy."
"A sense of community and camaraderie can go a long way," Jeff explains. "I don't think anybody in this project was the coolest kid in school. All of these people are highly revered musicians who have been involved with a bunch of other projects – everyone is somebody from somewhere. This time around, we've all gotten together with people on the same level, to have fun. And that's the key in all this: Just to have fun and play music that is fun for us to play, with songs that are meaningful."
Fueled by their DIY ethic, My Jerusalem recorded the album in two adjacent apartments in the French Quarter of New Orleans, LA.. The experience proved to be both challenging and liberating. "Almost every piece of gear we used was broken or duct-taped together," muses Klein. That ram shackled environment and the creativity it birthed to overcome its limitations only added to the music’s charm. From the Bacharach meets Orbison album opener "Valley of Casualties," to the cathartically driving "Sweet Chariot," Gone For Good is a set of 12 songs that illustrate, as the group puts it "ones journey to find hope and satisfaction through even the hardest of times, and come out victorious."
For the live shows the band will continue to grow and change. "It definitely keeps me on my toes. Wait, who's playing drums tonight? And there are how many people onstage?" jokes Klein. US and UK dates for My Jerusalem are planned for later this year.

Biffy Clyro coming to Fontana and L.A.
Breakthrough UK band biffy clyro will embark on their first US headlining tour, kicking off in Allston, MA on September 13. Their latest album, Only Revolutions, has been nominated for the 2010 Mercury Prize. Prior shortlist nominees for the prestigious UK award include Florence and the Machine, Radiohead, and Franz Ferdinand. Only Revolutions will be released in the US on September 21. The album will be available at select indie record stores through Junketboy Distribution. Go to www.thinkindie.com (click on ThinkIndie Physical) for more information.
Produced by Garth Richardson (Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers), mixed by Andy Wallace (Coldplay, Nirvana, Faith No More), and featuring the orchestration of multi Grammy-winning composer David Campbell, Only Revolutions is the fifth release from biffy clyro. The follow-up to 2007’s break through release Puzzle, Only Revolutions was released in the UK on November 9, 2009 to chart success and critical acclaim. It is certified platinum in the UK, and the Sunday Times, Kerrang and Q each gave it four stars, with The Guardian declaring, “ their songs pack a punch, but are full of light, shade and sophistication.” The first UK single off the album, “Mountains,” is a Top 5 radio hit that has sold over 100,000 copies. Current single “Bubbles,” (which features Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age playing additional guitar on the track) is the fifth consecutive single from Only Revolutions to enter the UK Top 40 chart.
The Scottish trio formed in 1995 and quickly began honing their unique sound, a mind-boggling mix of off-kilter tempos, itchy, unpredictable guitars, soulful choruses and feral screams. Jacques Schwarz-Bart releases album
http://www.facebook.com/dreyfusrecords
Acclaimed saxophonist Jacques Schwarz-Bart makes his definitive statement of Soul-Jazz with RISE ABOVE, his debut recording on Dreyfus Jazz.
Jacques Schwarz-Bart
Featuring Stephanie McKay
RISE ABOVE
Label: Dreyfus Jazz
Street Date: August 31, 2010
Catalog #: DRY-CD-36953
UPC: 764911695327
Price Code: AN (MSRP: $14.98)
Soulful sax man Jacques Schwarz-Bart makes his Dreyfus Jazz recording debut with Rise Above, an eclectic blend of jazz and neo-soul featuring the stirring vocal stylings of former Brooklyn Funk Essentials singer Stephanie McKay. Rise Above is an epic culmination of this son of a Black Guadeloupean mother and a French Jewish father’s diverse experiences.
“The great common denominator between all the styles I love, being Funk, Jazz, Soul and R & B, is that the music starts with the drums. It is all about the feel,” he says. “Each of these musical forms offers me an opportunity to express my personal feelings and unique story. I always felt that they needed to come together”.
Following his arrival in New York a decade ago, Schwarz-Bart first received widespread exposure as a member of Roy Hargrove’s AfroCuban big band Crisol. He was later an important part of the trumpeter’s groundbreaking RH Factor band – one of the first and most successful jazz/urban crossovers. Schwarz-Bart’s tune “Forget Regret,” featuring McKay’s vocal, became a hit single from the band’s much acclaimed Hard Groove album. Succeeding Hargrove as leader of the horn section for neo-soul god D’angelo, the saxist began writing tunes based on a mixture of soul and jazz with gwoka flavors.
After connecting with soulmate Stephanie McKay, he started writing the songs with lyrics that would come together on Rise Above: “Adding her vocal presence completed the concept, allowing me to embrace a wide range of emotions, and find an artistic balance between simplicity and abstraction,” says Jacques.
The sound of Rise Above reflects Schwarz-Bart’s impressive resume which includes work with such popular music luminaries as Erykah Badu, Meshell Ndegeocello, Eric Benet, and Soulive, as well as jazz barrier breakers James Hurt, Danilo Perez and David Gilmore, but it’s concept is distinctively the leader’s own, reflect his unique background and heritage.
“This is my oldest project, and yet the one that took the longest to achieve, he says. “I was waiting to have enough experience before taking on this complex musical chemistry.”
Rise Above is a concept album where each tune is whole and complete while at the same time taking a crucial part in the overall balance, like a planet in a galaxy. First and foremost it is a melodic album where every theme can be sung, which is done beautifully by both McKay vocally and Schwarz-Bart instrumentally. Each of the ten tracks on Rise Above blend the different earthy rhythms of gwoka with jazzy harmonies and chosen nuggets of soul and funk that “thicken the sauce,” giving a modern dimension to the sound that is sure to appeal to hip audiences. In addition to the proven hit “Forget Regret,” other notable tracks include lead single “Feel So Free” “Rainbow” and the closing “Home,” co-written with Meshell Ndegeocello.

David Morris releases album
Solo musician David Morris recently released his debut rock alternative album "Picture An Accident" under the artist name "Picture An Accident."
The album, based upon hardship and hope, was written, recorded and mixed entirely by Morris in a matter of months, from January 2010 to July 2010. David sings lead and supporting vocals, and plays all instruments, including guitars, bass, drums, and keyboards. The album features seven intricately crafted, rock-based songs, each with alternative twists and turns to invoke an emotional sound-stage-of-the-mind experience.
Morris' goal for the "Picture An Accident" debut was to create an album for those who crave a deeper listening experience. Morris feels the art of strong songwriting and storytelling is key. Morris refers to examples of great song crafting by bands like Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Police, U2, Muse, VAST, and Foo Fighters. Morris notes how each group has consistently provided a high level of emotional impact with their songs, and how each band has stood the test of time. Morris says that he used these groups as a high watermark for the songwriting and recording of "Picture An Accident."
About the name:
David noted, "I decided to use 'Picture An Accident' as both an artist name and the name of the album. A lot of people ask what 'Picture An Accident' is. I came up with the name after a near miss car crash with an oncoming car that crossed over the line and headed right for my car. I quickly changed lanes and avoided it. That was when I noticed my imagination providing clear flashes as to what my car might have looked like had the accident taken place. I thought it would be interesting to have a name that connects to a built-in primal instinct within each of us. I also thought the name was interesting because it directs a person to do something. I don't recall many band names that do that."
About David Morris:
David was raised on the sound stages of Hollywood alongside his famous late father actor/director Howard Morris (from the legendary Sid Caesar's "Your Show of Shows," "The Andy Griffith Show," various Mel Brooks' films, and many other films and TV shows). While growing up, David was involved with dozens of his father's productions. David used these experiences to develop "Picture An Accident."
In addition to creating music, David has directed dozens of productions, including national TV spots and specialized marketing and educational videos. He shot and directed the 30 second TV spot for the "Picture An Accident" release, airing next month on MTV, VH1 and Bravo. The spot can be seen here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8d356-LPg9w
The album "Picture An Accident" is available at all major online music stores, including iTunes, Amazon, Napster, Rhapsody, eMusic, and others.

The album "Picture An Accident" is available at all major online music stores, including iTunes, Amazon, Napster, Rhapsody, eMusic, and others.

Lucy Schwartz to release album
SEPTEMBER 28, LUCY SCHWARTZ - LIFE IN LETTERS
Her latest CD, Life in Letters, introduces the new 20 year-old face of Lucy Schwartz, but listeners may already know her voice. Rich and dreamy and all lit up in Technicolor, it’s graced movie theaters and TV sets across the country. “Darling I Do,” is one example: Lucy created the love theme to Shrek Forever After and performed the song with her co-writer Landon Pigg on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The L.A.-based singer-songwriter has also written for numerous films including Mother & Child, Post Grad, Adam, and the The Women and her songs have been featured in more than a dozen hit television shows. Schwartz also sang the hilariously campy jingles “Mister F” and “For British Eyes Only” on Arrested Development,
Now, Life in Letters establishes Lucy Schwartz as a major talent, big and bright and bursting with energy. LA Weekly called her arrangements smart, bringing a spectacular whimsy to everything she does, adding ukulele or a capella harmonies where you’d least expect them, cranking up every emotion into surround sound. There’s so much joie de vivre in her music, she’s written no less than two songs – “Graveyard” and “Shadow Man” – about what it takes to feel truly alive. “I feel like I’m always asking myself, ‘Am I living a fulfilling life? Am I making the most of my time?’” says Schwartz

Josiah Leming to release album
SEPTEMBER 14, JOSIAH LEMING - COME ON KID’
Singer songwriter Josiah Leming is gearing up for the September release of Come On Kid, his debut album for Warner Bros. Records, with whom he signed not long after appearing on Season 7 of American Idol in 2008. Leming’s brief, yet memorable time on the show (he was living out of the car while his mom was being treated for cancer), spurred fans to turn up in droves online to demand his reinstatement. They sent him messages of support, posted clips of themselves performing Leming’s original songs on YouTube, and bought downloads through his MySpace page.
Building on that momentum, as well as the release of two EP’s of songs from early recording sessions with producer Dave Kosten (2008’s Angels Undercover and 2009’s Punk Ass Rain), Come on Kid is a classic, emotionally resonant coming-of-age tale that showcases Leming’s strengths as a lyricist, his knack for unforgettable melodies, as well as his powerfully expressive voice. The album’s title track, as well as several of its songs (“Silly Fly,” “Arctic Outcry Wind”) are Leming’s exhortation to pick himself up and keep on going, which he found increasingly difficult to do after his mother passed away in June 2009.

Here’s our lineup on the main stage:
Ambrosia (California)
RPWL (Germany)
District 97 (Chicago)
miRthkon (Bay Area)
Please visit the CalProg website to read about the bands and to listen to sound samples.
http://www.calprog.com
ABOUT THE BANDS
Ambrosia: Hailing from the South Bay area of southern California, this band released its first album back in 1975. They have collaborated with cultural icons like Leonard Bernstein, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and Alan Parsons. While most people know them as a pop hit band (they have had 5 Grammy nominations), their roots are clearly in progressive rock and they have agreed to do a set that spotlights that material. “We are so excited to be able to return to our progressive roots and do an all prog show here in southern California” says drummer Burleigh Drummond. “This is going to be great!”
RPWL: This German progressive rock band was formed in 1997 in Freising, Germany as a Pink Floyd cover band. The band's name comes from the first letters of the original four members; Phil Paul Rissettio, Chris Postl, Karlheinz Wallner, and Yogi Lang. After three years they started to make their own music based on their influences from their cover band era. Their debut CD, "God Has Failed" was met with international enthusiasm, praise and excellent reviews in all the major progressive rock music magazines. Since then they have gone on to make a number of studio albums of all original material. Their music while obviously influenced by Floyd is also melodic, dynamic, and at times symphonic. It’s all about textures and layers and never about shredding. While they have toured extensively in Europe, they have only appeared at BajaProg and ROSfest in North America and are very excited to return, this time to the golden state.
District 97: This is a young band hailing from the Chicago area that is getting rave reviews across the prog community. They sport a hard edged sound tempered with the exquisite contributions of a cellist from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as well as the contemporary female vocals of a finalist from American Idol. If you haven't heard this band yet, you will very soon. They are destined for great things, not the least of which is their festival debut at CalProg. If progressive rock is to survive it will have to adapt and appeal to a new generation of musicians and fans. With District 97 it is in very good hands.
miRthkon: This band hails from the Bay Area of California and features exceptional musicianship with quirky and complex compositions. I suppose they could be compared in some ways to Zappa and Bubblemath (remember them?). But they also have a jazzy / metal quality. The only real way to get a read on them is to listen to their latest CD Vehicle. Their multi-media show is scheduled to kick off the festival.
We hope to see you all there!

Blood Red Shoes to tour
Blood Red Shoes are Laura-Mary Carter and Steven Ansell. They are a rock band from Brighton, UK. They know there is a power and intensity in simplicity. And they have a new album. It’s called Fire Like This.
Intensity is the word. Fire Like This is simply exceptional rock music, steeped in a knowledge of your alt-rock staples – Nirvana, Babes In Toyland, Drive Like Jehu – but with its own fingerprint. ‘Don’t Ask’ and ‘Count Me Out’ harness scything guitars and loud-quiet dynamics like they never went out of fashion. But there’s more ambitious fare here, too. Take dramatic seven-minute closer ‘Colours Fade’, originally released as a free download from their website– or the tender, fraught ‘When We Wake’, a sombre mediation on mortality that nonetheless burns with hot emotional force. “In the end is this all we can ask for?” breathes Laura-Mary, as Steven’s drums patter with a quiet intensity.
This is not your typical rock fare, but Blood Red Shoes thrive on such paradox. This, remember, is a band just as comfortable supporting Rage Against The Machine in front of 30,000 Parisians as they are rocking up at a benefit gig for Shelter or Love Music Hate Racism just because, you know, it matters.
“It’s a difficult tightrope,” says Steven. “You know, we’ve come from a punk rock, underground scene – everyone has pretty strict ethical rules, about selling out and that. We want to make music that matters, that’s credible, and artistic. But we’re also really ambitious. We definitely want to be a big band.”
And is it still possible to do both?
Steven shares a glance with Laura-Mary. They smile. They think so. “It’s hard, of course,” says Steven. “But we’ve learnt so much in the last few years. I know we’ll be alright if we’re completely ourselves.”

Rebirth Brass Band signs with Basin Street Records
On this 5th anniversary week as we remember the devastation and flooding that occurred after Hurricane Katrina due to poorly built levees, Basin Street Records is proud to further demonstrate its rebirth by announcing the signing of the world famous Rebirth Brass Band.
Simply put, the Rebirth Brass Band is an institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers and Kermit Ruffins, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. Their signature brand of heavy funk has become the soundtrack to an entire city, a fact reinforced by their role in the opening scene of the HBO series “Treme.” In the wake of the sometimes-stringent competition amongst brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack.
Reflecting on the collaboration between these two pillars of the New Orleans music community, Phil Frazier said, “This is what New Orleans is all about, The Rebirth Brass Band and Basin Street Records teaming up to release music that’ll make you move and put a smile on your face.”
Basin Street Records worked with Rebirth from the sidelines in 2005 on Throwback the album that reunited the iconic band with founding member, and now label mate, Kermit Ruffins. With the signing of Rebirth, Basin Street Records will continue to create music that distills the city of New Orleans into a complex series of rhythms and melodies.
President Mark Samuels believes that “there is nothing in the world like going to see Rebirth on a Tuesday night at the Maple Leaf. We are excited to begin what we hope will be a long relationship that is beneficial to both Rebirth and our label.”
The Rebirth Brass Band is expected to release their first album on Basin Street Records in February 2011.
Basin Street Records was formed in 1997 and is home to music from Kermit Ruffins, Theresa Andersson, Jeremy Davenport, Dr. Michael White, Henry Butler, Jon Cleary, Jason Marsalis, Los Hombres Calientes, Irvin Mayfield, and The Headhunters.

Fueled by expressions of lust, anger, pain and hate, Making Monsters is the sound of Combichrist mastermind Andy LaPlegua ripping out his heart and plugging its still-beating deathkicks into his music, rife with hook-heavy choruses, speaker-crushing beats, and dark aggressive vocals. The first single “Never Surrender” is bound to rule the dance floors along with other floor stompers “They” and “Throat Full of Glass”. The baretoothed aggression of “Follow the Trail of Blood” (featuring Brendan Schiepatti of Bleeding Through) will immediately become a crowd favorite while the brooding “Through These Eyes of Pain” takes a much subtler approach and shows us another side of Combichrist, that of the man inside the monster.
Recorded in Totprod Studios in Atlanta, GA and produced by LaPlegua, Making Monsters takes the band beyond the aggressive techno and electro rhythms and propels them into much more primal and raw territory. "It's beyond my personal demons, and extremely honest," says LaPlegua.
Making Monsters will be released via Metropolis Records physically on September 28, 2010 (digital release is slated for August 31, 2010). The live incarnation is comprised of LaPlegua, longtime live drummer Joe Letz (Amen, Genitorturers, Emigrate), keyboardist Z_Marr (Hell Trash), and Trevor Friedrich (Eighteen Visions, Imperative Reaction).

The Posies to tour
The Posies announce their U.S. Fall 2010 tour with co-headliner Brendan Benson and opening act Aqueduct, in support of their upcoming album BLOOD/CANDY on Ryko. Kicking off in Milwaukee on November 5th and wrapping up in their hometown of Seattle on December 11th, the tour spans over 20 major U.S. cities and immediately follows their European tour which begins September 28, the same day BLOOD/CANDY will be available nationwide.
The Posies’ founders, Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow, will also join Brendan Benson’s set contributing bass, guitar, keyboards and backing vocals. Both Jon and Ken have a remarkable knack for interchanging their musical roles and are active members with other bands. They have lent their production and musical contributions to a myriad of artists including R.E.M., Snow Patrol, Big Star, the Minus 5, Bob Mould, Neil Young, the Disciplines, John Wesley Harding and William Shatner.
Prior to their full-fledged international tour, The Posies will perform the first live set of BLOOD/CANDY at their official album release show in New York City. Once fans were notified about the event, all the seats were sold within two hours. The sold-out show will be held at The Rock Shop in Brooklyn on September 23rd.
BLOOD/CANDY is the band’s first album in five years and a testament to the band’s evolving sound, boasting melodic hooks, provocative lyrics and intricate layers of instrumentation that blend far-out, spacey sounds with sophisticated hues. Spin.com calls BLOOD/CANDY a “nuanced, playful romp” with an “adventurous attitude,” and The Huffington Post states “depending on how you want to hear it, it’s a brilliant return to form or a daring move forward.” The band produced most of the album and teamed up with artists from Broken Social Scene, The Stranglers and Letters To Cleo for a variety of guest collaborations.
Tour schedule is posted below and was exclusively announced on Brooklyn Vegan. More dates will be announced shortly, please visit www.theposies.net and www.myspace.com/theposies for most up-to-date schedule.

The Opera Buffs present Charles Castronovo in L.A. Sept. 25
Today, tenor Charles Castronovo is one of the most renowned singers of his generation, performing around the world at such august venues as the New York Metropolitan Opera, Opera National de Paris, Staatsoper Berlin, and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. But here in Los Angeles, one group of opera aficionados recognized Castronovo’s artistry long before all the others: the Opera Buffs, an all-volunteer organization dedicated to supporting emerging singers.
Fifteen years later, Castronovo will once again perform for the Opera Buffs, when he presents “Charles Castronovo’s Italian Songbook” on Saturday, September 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Colburn School’s Zipper Hall in Los Angeles. All proceeds raised by the event, which is open to the public, will benefit the roster of deserving young singers nurtured and mentored by the group.
“There are so few organizations like the Opera Buffs, that help a young singer to focus on their development and art,” says Castronovo, who appeared as a Resident Artist with LA Opera and will return to Los Angeles for the company’s World Premiere of Daniel Catán’s Il Postino, opening September 23. “To have had this support so early in my career has been a great help. Now, to have the chance to give a little back by singing this concert of beautiful Italian songs is almost like receiving a second gift from the Buffs!”
“The Opera Buffs provides funding and performance opportunities for young artists in Southern California,” adds David Alan Gibb, President of the Opera Buffs, Inc. “The younger the singer, the more difficult it is to identify career potential. But there was no question about the capabilities of the young Charles Castronovo! He has more than fulfilled all early expectation. We’re delighted that he has generously offered to sing for us and that music lovers throughout our community will be able to experience his artistry, at this stage of his career, in such an intimate setting.”
Those who attend “Charles Castronovo’s Italian Songbook” will hear the tenor perform his favorite Neapolitan, Sicilian and other Italian songs, as well as arias from his extensive repertoire. “Charles grew up with many of these songs,” says Gibb. “He heard them sung at home by his father. This, of course, will make the evening even more special and meaningful.”
By no means, however is Castronovo, who performed at Opera Buffs’ Showcase concerts in 1995 and 1996, the only acclaimed singer to have been mentored by the organization. Since 1983, hundreds of artists – including Brian Asawa, Richard Bernstein, Michelle DeYoung, Greg Fedderly, Sandra Radvanovsky and Deborah Voight – have benefited in the early stages of their careers from the Buffs’ financial and moral support.
“The Opera Buffs provides funding for career-related expenses based on current talent and career potential,” explains Gibb. “We play a very unique and invaluable role in the opera community -- fulfilling a niche generally not served by opera companies, competitions and music schools.”
As Castronovo experienced, the organization also provides young singers with the opportunity to gain paid performance experience. The Opera Buffs’ Fall Showcase –“Rivalry, Romance and Revenge” – will take place on Sunday, October 31, at 2:30 p.m. at Thayer Hall at the Colburn School in Los Angeles.
The Honorary Committee for the “Charles Castronovo’s Italian Songbook” gala includes tenor Placido Domingo, soprano Marilyn Horne, and soprano Martina Arroyo, winner of the National Endowment for the Arts’ 2010 Opera Honors Award.
Tickets for the event are $100/person. To order, call 818.248.3391 or email barbaramrkl@yahoo.com. For more information about the Opera Buffs, visit its website, www.operabuffs.org. The Colburn School is located at 200 South Grand Avenue in Los Angeles.
The Opera Buffs, Inc. believes that, of all musical instruments, the human voice is the most sublime and that helping the exceptionally talented artist reach the operatic stage is a mission worthy of its utmost effort and full dedication.

Eric Johnson, Andy McKee and Peppino D'Agosto to tour
Three of the most popular, talented, innovative and musically rich guitar players and composers in contemporary music will bring their acoustic guitars together to perform and interact on stages across America this October and January 2011 when Eric Johnson, Andy McKee and Peppino D’Agostino meet on the Guitar Masters tour.
The 21-date two-leg run of theaters, colleges and clubs will feature individual sets by each capped with a finale where all three interplay and collaborate for the first time together to offer an engaging and enlightening aural feast of acoustic six-string mastery and melodic brilliance.
The trek is sure to be an unforgettable musical experience for concertgoers that unites guitar virtuosos not just known for their awesome skills and technique but a mutual gift for song composition and melody and drawing out the full musicality of the solo acoustic guitar to near-orchestral dimensions. Creative sparks, one-time only stunning improvisations and mutual inspiration are sure to abound as they come together at the end of every show to offer a value-added concert bill that appeals to fans of many musical styles as well as guitar aficionados.
Grammy-winner Johnson is one of the most respected and renowned guitarists playing today, celebrated for his electric six-string playing and songwriting gifts, but also his acoustic talents that have graced his albums and which he has showcased on a number of previous solo tours. He is enshrined in Guitar Player’s Gallery of Greats and was named one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of the 20th Century by Musician magazine, took three instrumental songs from his 1990 platinum album Ah Via Musicom into the pop Top 10, and boasts a total of five Grammy nominations.
“He's an extraordinary guitar player accessible to ordinary music fans,” raves the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
Andy McKee is an Internet phenomenon whose solo acoustic six-string performance videos and compositional flair have racked up an astounding 78 million-plus plays on YouTube, where he has also held the three Top-Rated Videos of All Time. His creative and innovative use of altered tunings, syncopated rhythm guitar taps, partial capos, and his textural use of polyphonic tones and drones won him Acoustic Guitar magazine’s worldwide Silver Medal award for fingerstyle playing in 2008. With six strong-selling and critically-lauded independent albums to his credit, McKee is a popular and engaging live music attraction who plays some 200 shows a year internationally.
As the Lawrence Journal observes, McKee has “forged a distinctive style that proves eye-opening and ear-opening to many."
Native Italian Peppino D’Agostino “plays steel-string guitar with virtuosity and complexity… Influences as far-flung as the flamenco work of Paco de Lucia and the pop sensibilities of the Beatles, evident in the songs he’s written, which brim with memorable melodies,” raves the Chicago Tribune. Now residing in the San Francisco Bay area, he was voted Best Acoustic Guitarist in Guitar Player’s 2007 Readers Poll and won Acoustic Guitar’s Players Choice Award the following year for Best Acoustic Album Of All Time. He has nine previous U.S. CD releases, including collaborations with electric rock guitar star Stef Burns and classical guitar expert David Tanenbaum, and also adds his steel string playing to eight nylon-string savants in the United Guitar Ensemble. The San Diego Reader hails D’Agostino as “a giant of the acoustic guitar.”
The tour will be the first time that McKee has met Johnson, whose hit “Cliffs of Dover” inspired him to play guitar.
“He’s really musical.” McKee observes. “It’s like hearing a song but rather than having a vocalist he covers the melody and all the bases at once with his guitar. I still listen to his music all the time and even make references to it in my playing.”D’Agostino has opened shows for Johnson and notes, “When he plays he really puts his special knowledge in it.”
He is also an admirer of McKee’s talent. “What he does with techniques like tapping and his compositions is fabulous. He’s an amazing player.”
“Andy is a great player who puts it all these guitar technique into songs he writes and plays that make them quite interesting. But it’s still all about the song,” Johnson observes of McKee. “Peppino is a really emotional and very soulful player. And he comes from a little bit different background than Andy and I do, so it’s really nice combination for all of us to come from our different sources and mix it all together."
The tour will coincide with the release of Johnson’s new album, Up Close, on his own Vortexan label via EMI. McKee issued his latest recording, the CD/DVD package Joyland, on Razor & Tie Records in March. And D’Agostino’s latest album, Nine White Kites, comes out on his own label August 24.
