Sister Spit at REDCAT April 11

REDCAT, CalArts' downtown center for contemporary arts, presents an evening of queer literary performance with San Francisco's legendary Sister Spit. Sister Spit: The Next Generation will perform at REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater) Thursday, April 11 at 8:30 pm.

Legendary adventurers in queer literary performance San Francisco's Sister Spit comes to Los Angeles during its month-long tour with a vanload of multimedia, queer-centric brilliance. Hosted by the irrepressible Michelle Tea, this irreverent, wild, brainy and provocative extravaganza features established writers along with emerging queer and queer-influenced artists of all genders, including singer/songwriter/performance artist DavEnd, writers Danny L¬Ã©Vesque and Ali Liebegott, artist TextaQueen and graphic memoirist Cristy C. Road. Special guests joining this raucous engagement at REDCAT include novelist Francesca Lia Block and comedian-playwright-television writer Jill Soloway. Sister Spit's 2013 line-up guarantees an exceptional evening of butch gamblers, cranky mermaids, psychic hairdressers, accordion-wielding songstresses, punk-obsessed teens and post-apocalyptic heroes.

Sister Spit began as an open mic in 1994 by Michelle Tea and Sini Anderson. In 1997 they decided to do their first U.S. tour and they were soon joined by Jane LeCroy and poet Eileen Myles. The group were noted for their Ramblin' Roadshow, performing at feminist events such as the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival. After three tours Sister Spit stopped touring. Michelle Tea revived the tour in April 2007, calling the new incarnation Sister Spit: The Next Generation. The new group included original Sister Spitters Eileen Myles and Ali Liebegott, as well as younger writers such as Cristy C. Road, Nicole J. Georges, and Rhiannon Argo.
