End o' week musings

Ooooo I love Halloween and I love fall! There's nothing better than the crisp air and crunchy leaves and an opportunity to dress up!!

Last Saturday I went to the Glass House to see Emilie Autumn. In a word- fantastic! Her concert was more like a play with lots of music and some circus acts. Her backup girls all have characters that they maintain throughout the show, along with talents that include fire eating and aerial acts. Autumn rocks, whether she's on violin or harpsichord or singing and she's just one massive burst of energy that grabs you and keeps you throughout the performance... not that you mind...

I was very impressed by the concert, but my biggest moment of awe came during the encore, when Autumn took on Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody." All women singing and Autumn on lead vocals and using her violin for the guitar parts! Wow!

Sunday I joined Vernor for "Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistance." OK, it's not a thinking film, but it was fun. It had a bit of everything- comedy, romance, adventure, horror... just a good way to spend a couple of hours and let your brain go.

Yesterday we had our Halloween party at work and I came as Abby from "NCIS." It was my mom's idea and a good one. My dentist's assistant Tracy let me borrow one of her lab coats and the rest of the stuff I had in my closet (should I really be confessing this??), so it was easy to pull the outfit together. I had also entered the pumpkin carving contest with my creation which boasted a peace sign in a heart on the front and looking through I had carved LOVE into the back.

I didn't win the pumpkin nor the costume contest, but I had fun. It was cool when people recognized who I was supposed to be and funny when guys in here who never gave me the time of day before said how cute I looked!

Tomorrow I am going to go to Carin and Tom's house and be a part of their neighbor's haunted house. I'm going to revive my voodoo woman outfit (probably with a warmer top) and work on being extra spooky.

Next week will be short for me and you may not get my Friday wrap-up, as I'm heading to Pioneer Town and Joshua Tree to see Vampire Weekend. I'm moteling it one night, then camping and going to the farmer's market and exploring the area. I haven't been there before that I can remember, so I'm excited about a new adventure!

In rotation this week: HorrorPops, Nekromantix, Van Helsing's Curse, Emilie Autumn and Tim Curry.

Photos we got 'em: A couple of pet pics from Stuffonmycat.com and Stuffonmydog.com, plus a photo of Danse Macabre, a cool goup of musicians and dancers, in their creepiest attire (my friend Joanne is a drummer in the troupe and I'm still not sure which one she is!) and shots of me as a voodoo woman and Abby.

Thought o' the week: Embrace the changing season. I live in a small apartment so I don't have a lot of room for decorations, yet I have lots of cool stuff. My way around this is to change over items each season and sometimes mid-season. I don't always go for the traditional it's winter so I have to have holiday ornaments thing... if I've been feeling down, I may perk up with seashells and flowers.

It's not really what type of thing you display, it's what makes you feel good. Yet you should pick a theme so it doesn't look like a jumbled mess. If you love the holidays, don't be shy about showing off your snow globe collection in July. If you're especially patriotic, stars and stripes are fine any time of the year. If you want to leave your spooky stuff out through the New Year, that's OK too. Be creative, have fun, be happy! Just make your world your own.

Keep on rockin'

Esotouric to offer Pasadena Confidential crime bus tour

Esotouric's Pasadena Confidential Crime Bus Tour Explores the Crown City's Dark Side

WHAT: Esotouric presents the Pasadena Confidential crime bus tour with Crimebo the Clown

WHEN: Saturday December 5 8, 12pm-4pm

COST: $58, which includes coffee and cookies

WHERE: Departs from Fair Oaks and Arlington Street, South Pasadena.

On December 5, Esotouric, the eclectic bus adventure company whose offbeat tours expose L.A.'s secret history, offers its popular, occasional Pasadena Confidential tour, a true crime bus adventure delving deep into the weird and horrible past of one of L.A.'s most exclusive suburbs.

Tour guide Kim Cooper says, "I believe every neighborhood gets the crimes it deserves, and Pasadena's dark side is suitably rife with rocket scientists driven mad by their work, wealthy eccentrics spoiling their pet chimps and bears, seemingly respectable families misbehaving behind tall hedges and a general air of genteel psychic decay."

Making a special appearance on this tour: fresh from his star turn as co-Grand Marshall with Dr. Demento at the O.C. Marketplace Halloween Hearse Show, it's Crimebo the Crime Clown capering as only Crimebo can.

Crime fiends will enjoy a four-hour guided luxury bus tour to the darkest recesses of Pasadena history, with vintage photos and film clips show to set the scene. From celebrated cases like the RFK assassination, "Eraserhead" star Jack Nance's strange end, black magician/rocket scientist Jack Parsons'death-by-misadventure and the 1926 Rose Parade grand stand collapse, to fascinating obscurities, the tour's multitude of murders, arsons, kidnappings, robberies, suicides, auto wrecks and oddball happenings provide an alternate history of Pasadena that's as fascinating as it is creepy.

Crime Bus passengers will tour the old Millionaire's Row on Orange Grove, boggle at the shocking Sphinx Murder on the steps of the downtown Masonic Hall, thrill to the misadventures of one very poorly-behaved (but beautifully dressed!) chimpanzee and discover why people named Judd should think twice before moving to Pasadena. They'll also enjoy the offbeat charms of Crimebo the Crime Clown as he leads passengers out onto Suicide Bridge for a personal look down into the gorge that tempted dozens of tormented souls to their demise.

Riders on this eye-opening, funny and informative tour will forever see Pasadena in a new light. It is highly recommended for natives and newcomers alike, crime and history buffs and anyone who likes to seek out the unexpected.

Tamela Mann to release new gospel album Tuesday

Tamela Mann’s “The Master Plan” gospel CD will be released nationwide this coming Tuesday, November 3. Following up Tamela’s 2004 “Gotta Keep Movin” and “The Live Experience,” which spawned a Top 20 Billboard Gospel chart hit and 2008 Stellar Award nominations for Female Vocalist of the Year and Contemporary Female Artist of the Year, Tamela releases her sophomore solo CD to both music and television fans across the country.

Tamela, who also co-stars in Tyler Perry’s “Meet The Browns” on TBS playing Cora Simmons; and husband David Mann, who plays her on-screen father, Mr. Brown, will co-present for the Gospel category on the November 3 taping of the upcoming Soul Train Awards, scheduled to simulcast on Centric and BET on November 29 at 9:00 p.m. EST. The new season of “Meet The Browns” will also begin airing on November 4.

“The Master Plan” was produced by Grammy Award winning Myron Butler (Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams); and Terrell Carter, and features a more contemporary urban/R&B twist to traditional gospel music. As co-writer on “I Trust In You,” “Here I Am,” “Anything For You” and “In Him,” Tamela also performs a stirring new arrangement of “The Lord’s Prayer.”

Starting her music career in 1999 as lead singer of the multi-Grammy award winning Kirk Franklin & The Family; and currently on the #1 rated television show for black audiences, “Meet The Browns,” Tamela, for the first time, releases a collection of gospel songs in which she makes her debut as a co-writer.

Prior to Tamela’s solo recording debut with “Gotta Keep Movin’” and the CD/DVD “The Live Experience,” as a member of Kirk Franklin and The Family, Tamela was the featured soloist on the Grammy-nominated “Song of the Year” - “Lean On Me,” which featured Mary J. Blige, Crystal Lewis, R. Kelly and Bono. “Father Can You Hear Me” and “Take It To Jesus” are also included on the soundtrack album of “Diary Of A Mad Black Woman.”

Tamela, whose Cora Simmons role on “Meet The Browns’” television series originated from her role in the movie “Meet The Browns,” has also starred in other Tyler Perry’’ hit films “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” and “Madea Goes To Jail”; and his plays “I Can Do Bad All By Myself, “ “Madea’s Family Reunion” and “Madea’s Class Reunion.”

Metropolitan Opera finals to be held Nov. 8, open to public

The roster of renowned singers whose early careers included competing in the Metropolitan Opera Western Regional Audition Finals includes sopranos Carol Vaness, Leona Mitchell and Deborah Voigt; mezzo sopranos Michelle De Young, Grace Bumbry and Suzanna Guzman; baritones Thomas Hampson and Richard Paul Fink; and bass-baritones Richard Bernstein and Dean Elzinga. Those wishing to hear the upcoming generation of opera stars are invited to attend the 2009-2010 Western Regional Audition Finals on Sunday, November 8, at Bovard Auditorium on the campus of the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles.

“The purpose of the auditions is to discover exceptionally talented opera singers and assist them in their development,” explains Molly Siefert, Western Regional Director. “The program also helps discover new talent for the Met and searches for possible participants in the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program of the Metropolitan Opera Association.”

Each year, the Metropolitan Opera National Council holds auditions in 16 regions of the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada, with approximately 25 Regional Winners advancing to New York to compete in the National Semi-Finals on the Met stage. The Western Regional Auditions are presented in collaboration with the Thornton School of Music at USC.

“The really exciting part is when ten singers are selected as National Finalists to compete in the Grand National Finals Concert, accompanied by the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra,” says Siefert, who estimates she has shepherded from 25 to 30 singers through the New York Finals experience over the past 20 years she has been involved in the program. “And the excitement for us continues for the remainder of the singers’ careers. For instance, each year, approximately 100 former auditioners appear in Metropolitan Opera productions alone.”

Since 1992, three Western Regional “National Winners” have been selected to be participants in the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera: mezzo soprano Michelle De Young (1992-1995), soprano Sondra Radvanovsky (1995-1998) and soprano Andrea Trebnik (1997-2000).

Judges who will hear the singers participating in the Western Regional Preliminary Auditions on November 7 are soprano Jane Eaglen, a Grammy Award winning soprano who has performed worldwide, from Seattle, Chicago and New York to London, Vienna, Munich and Milan and is particularly renowned for her portrayals of the most demanding roles in operas by Wagner, Puccini and Bellini; Kim Witman, General Director of the Wolf Trap Opera Company; and Brad Woolbright, Artistic Administrator of the Santa Fe Opera. Gayletha Nichols, Executive Director of the Metropolitan Opera National Council, will join the panel for the Finals on November 8.

“This fall will mark the 53nd season the Metropolitan Opera National Council has conducted auditions in the Western Region,” says Siefert. “There is a lot of history in that, and also a lot of future!”

Tickets for the Metropolitan Opera Western Regional Audition Finals are available for $29/person. Call (626) 285-3688 or (818) 240-6464. Bovard Auditorium is located on the campus of the University of Southern California at 3551 Trousdale Pkwy in Los Angeles.

Noriega to release album Dec. 8

Upstart label Viable Records is proud to announce the group’s first release: NORIEGA’s ‘Desolo,’ December 8. Boasting members of Los Angeles buzzband Black Sheep Wall, NORIEGA has also launched pre-orders for the band’s debut EP, and posted "Life By Myself", from the five-track effort, both available at
http://www.myspace.com/noriegaband
and http://www.viablerecords.com.

Melding the heaviest of the doom bands with licks reminiscent of pseudo-jazz as much as they combine hardcore riffing with meaningful imagery and lyrical poetry in, all in tandem with originality Black Sheep Wall only briefly displayed, NORIEGA should be a welcome addition to the pool of talent in the extreme metal world years after the worlds of metal and hardcore started to combine, evolve, branch, and inspire.

"We all went through Daniel's passing," Thompson says of the recent passing of Admiral Angry's Daniel Kraus during the writing process of ‘Desolo,’ one of the band's collective close friends. "It's definitely a negative energy on the album for that reason among many others. But, we don't want it to be saying it's hopeless. Not only with the lyrics, but also with the music, there's definitely an awkward vibe [for the band], but we wrote these songs in context to a series of less than ideal circumstances; like you don't relate to anyone, that you're more alone than you will ever realize. That's what we tried to do with these songs."

Tying into those feelings are the appearance of Admiral Angry vocalist Chris Lindblad on two of the tracks on ‘Desolo,’ including the 12-minute EP-closer "Ballacaust."

NORIEGA will make its live debut in its current incarnation Thursday, Oct. 29 in Los Angeles at Relax Ba alongside Struck By Lightning (ex-members of Mouth of the Architect), Danger Invites Rescue, and Weight. The band also plans on holding a record release show closer to the release date of ‘Desolo,’ and is mapping out tentative touring plans.

"Full Throttle Saloon" to kick off Nov. 10

Engines, leather, tattoos and beer. They’re all on tap as truTV heads to the legendary Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, S.D., in the wild new series FULL THROTTLE SALOON. The show, which takes viewers behind-the-scenes at Michael Ballard’s legendary biker watering hole, is set to premiere Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 10 p.m. (ET).The Throttle is the “World’s Largest Biker Bar,” a 30-acre enormous indoor/outdoor bar with several large stages, a burn-out pit, a tattoo parlor, zip lines, a wrestling ring, restaurants, dozens of stores, hundreds of cabins for rent and parking for thousands of bikes. Because it is only open two weeks a year during the infamous rally, owner Michael Ballard and his team have to pull in a year’s worth of receipts in these two wild weeks. He gambles that the country’s most beautiful bartenders and biggest music acts will bring in the thousands of patrons he needs to make his number. This year, Michael can add the recession to his list of unpredictable factors, which also include weather, biker gangs, the egos of some of the country’s biggest musical acts, and local law enforcement. "Planet 51" soundtrack features classics with a new twist

Classic anthems from the 50s and 60s reach new heights with an upbeat, modern twist amongst exciting originals in the new Planet 51 soundtrack releasing November 17th on Decca. Written by Academy Award nominee Joe Stillman (Shrek) with an original score by James Brett (Transformers), Planet 51 is the latest exciting film from Ilion Animation Studios in association with Handmade Films International for the holiday season, opening nationwide just before Thanksgiving.

The film is a galactic-sized animated alien adventure comedy about Earth astronaut Chuck Baker who lands on Planet 51 thinking he’s the first to set foot on it. He soon discovers it’s inhabited by little green people who live in a white picket-fence world right out of the innocent 1950s and 60s. Their only fear? Being over-run by alien invaders…..like Chuck! With the help of a friendly teenager Lem and his friends, Chuck tries to get back safe to his spaceship and return home before he is captured.

The Planet 51 soundtrack includes fun songs for all ages like the ever popular “Lollipop”, “Greased Lightnin’”, “Unchained Melody” and “Mr. Sandman” along with exciting originals from Tom Cawte and new orchestrations for the film by James Brett. Like Chuck, these tunes are out of this world and make a terrific holiday gift for young and old alike. Planet 51 opens in theaters nationwide on November 20th.

Michael Feinstein and Cheyenne Jackson to release album

MICHAEL FEINSTEIN, the five-time Grammy Award nominated, platinum-selling singer and pianist, and CHEYENNE JACKSON – the Broadway star of Xanadu, All Shook Up and the current revival of Finian’s Rainbow – have announced the release of their first CD together, The Power of Two.

Based on the sold-out engagement at Michael’s New York nightclub, Feinstein’s at Loews Regency the disc features pop songs, classic standards and numbers from Broadway shows like Kiss Me Kate, City Of Angels and The King and I. The disc, released through Harbinger Records, will be available on iTunes, Amazon.com and in stores on November 3.

The Power of Two, called “passionate, impeccably harmonized and groundbreaking” by Stephen Holden in The New York Times, deftly explores partnerships of all kinds. Rex Reed of the New York Observer praised it as “unusual, provocative entertainment that makes listeners think and snap their fingers at the same time.”

The album’s opening duet ”I’m Nothing Without You” sets a tone of celebration from what the New York Daily News calls the “Dynamic Duo.” The album’s title track, “The Power of Two,” a folk ballad originally performed by The Indigo Girls about the difficulties and joys of love, emerges as one of the disc’s high points. Feinstein brings strong conviction to the rare Marshall Barer / Michael Leonard song “The Time Has Come,” performed as a tribute to the 1969 Stonewall uprising. “We Kiss in a Shadow” from The King and I – reconceived as a gay equality anthem – gives Hammerstein’s lyrics “Alone in our secret, together we sigh, for one smiling day to be free” a bold new meaning.

The album gives both performers a chance in the solo spotlight. Michael takes center stage in a surging version of “So In Love,” and a special new recording of “Old Friend,” a longtime staple of his repertoire which he revisits after many years. Cheyenne shines in a sly take on “Old Devil Moon” from his current gig in Finian’s Rainbow and a heartbreaking medley of the standards “I Get Along Without You Very Well” and “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.”

Their final duet, “If I Can Dream,” has a special meaning for both vocalists. Performed by Cheyenne on Broadway in his breakthrough role in All Shook Up, it was written for Elvis Presley’s 1968 “Comeback Special” by W. Earl Brown, a personal friend of Michael’s. In his archives, Michael has an original copy of the sheet music singed to Elvis by the songwriter.
The CD was produced by Feinstein and Jackson and features John Oddo on piano; Tony Kadleck on trumpet and flugelhorn; David Mann on tenor sax, flute and clarinet; David Finck on acoustic and electric bass; Bob Mann on guitar; David Ratajczak on drums and percussion. The disc also features special musical arrangements by John Oddo.

Michael Feinstein –
the multi-platinum selling, five-time Grammy nominated entertainer dubbed of “The Ambassador of the Great American Songbook” – is considered one of the premiere interpreters of American Popular Song. His 150 plus shows a year have included Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl and major concert halls, as well as the White House and Buckingham Palace. More than a mere performer, he is nationally recognized for his commitment to the American popular song, both celebrating its art and preserving its legacy for the next generation.

The Sinatra Project –
his latest CD from Concord Records which celebrates the musical sensibilities of “Old Blue Eyes” – earned Michael his fifth Grammy Award nomination in 2009. Feinstein is currently preparing the new PBS-TV series “Michael Feinstein's American Popular Song,” to start airing in 2010, in which Michael discovers treasures of the Great American Songbook around the world. Michael hosted and produced The Great American Songbook, a PBS Special and DVD set from Warner Brothers Home Video that traces the history of popular music in our country. He is designing a new piano for Steinway called “The First Ladies,” inspired by the White House piano. Feinstein will also serve as the Artistic director of the Carmel Performing Arts Center, a $160 million three-theatre performing arts center in Carmel, Indiana which will host an annual international Great American Songbook festival, along with diverse live programming and a museum to house his rare memorabilia and manuscripts.

Michael has written the score for two new stage musicals: The Day They Saved Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and The Gold Room, and he is working with MGM to develop The Thomas Crown Affair into a musical for Broadway.

Feinstein’s at Loews Regency has presented the top talents of pop and jazz such as Rosemary Clooney, Steve Tyrell, Barbara Cook, Tony Danza, Glen Campbell, Diahann Carroll, Jackie Mason and Dame Cleo Laine. He appears there for a sold-out holiday engagement every year. The Library of Congress elected Michael to the exclusive “National Sound Recording Advisory Board” safeguarding America’s musical heritage.

Cheyenne Jackson is an award winning stage and film actor currently starring as Woody in the new Broadway revival of Finian’s Rainbow at the St. James Theatre. Most recently Cheyenne was rocking the house as Sonny Malone in the smash hit Xanadu (Drama League, Drama Desk nominations) on Broadway. Off and on Broadway he starred as Joe Hardy in the New York City Center production of Damn Yankees opposite Jane Krakowski and Sean Hayes, Nicky Silver's The Agony & the Agony with Victoria Clark, All Shook Up (Theater World Award, Drama League, Outer Critics Circle nomination) the premier cast of Altar Boyz, Aida, Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Cartells, On The 20th Century and The 24 Hour Plays.

Jackson’s film credits include the Oscar nominated United 93, Curiosity and Hysteria. He has guest starred on TV in “30 Rock,” “Ugly Betty,” “Lipstick Jungle” and “Life After Mars.” Additionally, he portrayed "Sebastian Kinglare" for the Sony/Lifetime Television pilot "Family Practice." Ludo continues tour

Excited about the re-release of the band’s out-of-print self-titled debut and Broken Bride EP, LUDO is continuing their The Broken Bride Tour, which the group performs the Broken Bride EP in its entirety. On this final US tour of the year before the band hits the studio with producer Matt Wallace (Maroon 5, Faith No More, Train), fans can hear cuts from their debut, as well as You’re Awful, I Love You, the band’s Island Records debut, featuring the Modern Rock radio smash “Love Me Dead.”

Fans can continue to stream the never before released track “Elektra’s Complex” exclusively at Entertainment Weekly’s website:
http://music-mix.ew.com/2009/09/14/ludo-elektras-complex/ .

“Elektra’s Complex” has been a live fan favorite for years and finally appeared on the self-released, re-issue of Ludo’s debut album. Also included with the album is a bonus disc containing a 10 song, never-before-released live album, which was recorded at the band’s first birthday celebration in St. Louis.

The Broken Bride EP, which was originally released in 2005, finds Ludo expanding on their ability to write quirky rock songs, and portrays a growth in the band’s songwriting and musicianship. A nearly 30-minute, five-track rock opera which tells the tale of a man’s desperate attempt to save his wife’s life by traveling back in time, it is highlighted by the track “Save Our City.”

The video can be viewed at
http://www.ludorock.com/player/default.aspx?meid=2638 .

Tim Convy (Moog synthesizer, keyboards, vocals) recently explained “Our fan base has grown quite a bit in the last year, and, as a result, we have plenty of new fans who are only familiar with You're Awful, I Love You. We wanted to put out our first two albums to a wider audience, to sort of bring them up to speed before we release our new album next year.”

Ludo and the Broken Bride EP hit stores on September 29th, giving fans enough time to brush up on the older material.

Never Shout Never to release EP through Hot Topic

Never Shout Never, the brainchild of 18-year-old singer-songwriter and guitarist Christofer Drew, will release a new physical EP exclusively through clothing retailer Hot Topic on December 8th. The EP features two songs from Never Shout Never’s upcoming eight-song mini-album for Loveway Records/Sire (“Jane Doe” and “What is Love?”), a live track (“Big City Dreams” from 2008’s The Yippee EP), and a b-side (“She’s Got Style”), plus two music videos (“On the Brightside” from 2009’s The Summer EP and a live video of “Trouble” — a song from 2009’s Me & My Uke EP — that was shot in Grand Rapids, MI, in July).

Physical copies of the new EP will be available for purchase exclusively at Hot Topic stores nationwide. The digital version will be available for purchase from all digital service providers on December 15th, as well as through www.shockhound.com and www.nevershoutnever.com.

Drew has recently put the finishing touches on his eight-song mini-album, entitled What Is Love? with noted producer Butch Walker (Weezer, Katy Perry, Pete Yorn). Recorded in both Los Angeles and London (at the world-famous Abbey Road Studio). It will be released by Loveway Records/Sire in 2010.

Drew is on the road, with Meg and Dia as main support, performing a series of headlining dates and culling tunes for his set from What Is Love?, as well as from the three EP’s he released on his own Loveway Records, including The Summer EP, which broke into the iTunes Top 10 Album chart in June. Carter Hulsey and Now Now Every Children are providing support on the bill. In November, Drew will hit the road with Dashboard Confessional for a nationwide support tour. Please see below for all dates.

Drew was born in San Diego but spent most of his life in Joplin, MO, where he resides when not touring. In 2008, he began writing and recording songs in his basement and self-released The Yippee EP, which has sold more than 30,000 copies and hundreds of thousands of individual tracks. As an unsigned artist, Never Shout Never quickly built a grassroots following via MySpace, where it has been one of the site’s top artists for more than a year, averaging more than 100,000 plays a day and racking up more than 77 million total plays.

In October and November 2008, Never Shout Never hit the road with Hellogoodbye, during which time he befriended lead singer Forrest Kline, who produced The Summer EP at his home studio in Long Beach, CA. Never Shout Never then released a second EP, Me & My Uke EP in January 2009 and embarked on a U.S. headlining tour with The Scene Aesthetic, The Honorary Title, and The Bigger Lights with bassist Taylor McFee and drummer Nathan Ellison, followed by the Bamboozle Road Show Tour with We The Kings and Forever The Sickest, among others. Never Shout Never has been on the road all summer including a week on the Vans Warped Tour and on tour with Boys Like Girls and The Ready Set.

Halloween safety tips from Pasadena Fire Department

PASADENA FIRE DEPARTMENT OFFERS HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS

Children may be at risk of serious injury while trick-or-treating. The Pasadena Fire Department offers these safety tips:

* Never leave children unattended.

* Wear costumes that are bright and reflective. Make sure costumes are short enough to prevent tripping, entanglement or contact with flames.

* When shopping for costumes, wigs and accessories, purchase only those with labels indicating they are flame resistant.

* Provide flashlights with fresh batteries to children and their escorts.

* Review with children in advance the principle of "Stop-Drop-Roll" in case their costumes catch on fire.

* Take extra efforts to eliminate tripping hazards on your porches and walkways that may prove hazardous to young children rushing from house to house.

* Consider fire safety when decorating. Do not overload electrical outlets with Halloween lighting or special effects, and do not block exit doors.

* Always keep Jack O' Lanterns and hot electric lamps far away from drapes, decorations, flammable materials or areas where children and pets will be standing or walking.

* Wait until children are home to sort and check treats. Though tampering is rare, responsible adults should closely examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items.

* Drive carefully and be alert when driving in areas where children are trick-or-treating.

Pasadena to discuss city's plant palette

The plant palette previously identified for the South Fair Oaks Specific Plan will be reviewed during a community meeting hosted by the city of Pasadena’s Urban Forestry Advisory Committee on Monday, Nov. 2, at 5:30 p.m.

The meeting at Jackie Robinson Center, 1020 N. Fair Oaks Ave., will help the city decide whether the species should remain on the palette or alternate species should be considered.

The streets within the specific plan run from California Boulevard on the north to Pasadena’s southern boundary; and from the Metro Gold Line on the east to Pasadena Avenue, Bellefontaine Avenue and Alarcon Place on the west.

The palette identifies six large trees that can be planted on the streets, and four small trees. The liquidambar tree (also known as American sweet gum tree), California fan palm and purple leaf plum have been identified by the Pasadena City Council for further review by the committee for appropriateness on a street-by-street basis using criteria such as water needs, potential canopy, and compatibility with sidewalks and underground pipes. This is the final UFAC review of trees previously selected within specific plans.

Blunt Mechanic, Ben Davis, Black Wine, Boat & Loch Lomond release albums and tour

Blunt Mechanic ("World Record", Barsuk, 1/12):
Blunt Mechanic is the new moniker of Ben Barnett, who you may remember from his decade-long career prolifically writing, recording and performing under the name Kind Of Like Spitting. This record is a phoenix of stoney riffage, infectious hooks and brilliant, inspirational, goofy genius. http://www.barsuk.com/bands/bluntmechanic

Ben Davis ("Charge It Up!", Lovitt, 1/5):
"Charge It Up!", Ben Davis' third solo full-length (and the fourteenth album on which his solo work has appeared) is packed to the gills with the kind of frenetic, danceable, shoutable, undeniably beyond catchy hard pop that has flowed like a river of hot lava through the catalog of his entire career with Sleepytime Trio, Milemarker, Bats and Mice, and making magic collaborating with Des Ark. There's so much more to tell; listen for yourself.

Black Wine ("S/T", Don Giovanni 12/10):
Holy Ergs, this Black Wine debut is tremendous. The newest release from the Don Giovanni family (the label that brought you Screaming Females, who everyone's amped for--by the way, Marissa Paternoster helped record the record) is an early-SST-sounding doozy, full of the kind of frenetic crunch and explosive core that followers of Jersey legends The Ergs (this band includes guitarist Jeff Schroeck) and Hunchback (and also Miranda Taylor and J. Nixon) expect.

Boat ("Setting The Paces", Magic Marker, out this week):
Happy BOAT week--it came out this Tuesday! BOAT is the kind of band you just fully, completely fall in love with in the dorkiest of ways, and devotees are in heaven, because this is their sing-alongiest, most anthemic, raucous, infectious record to date. D. Crane and company have a new video that'll be ready for me to share with you any day now, but until then, do show yr love for the record about which Brooklyn

Vegan just said: "Sporting slightly fancier production than the band's first two albums, Setting the Pacesshows off what BOAT does best: unpretentious, clever, stick-in-your-head indie rock. If you wish there were more bands that reminded you of the good ole '90s (Pavement, Built to Spill, Lotion), BOAT are for you. You can check out three tracks from Paces at the top of this post, plus a couple of their older tracks as well."

Loch Lomond ("Night Bats", Hush, 11/15):
Last but certainly not least and coming up the most quickly is Loch Lomond's "Night Bats"--dudes. If you haven't yet heard their new single, "Wax and Wire", you need at least to hop on over to their MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/lochlomondmusic ) and jam it real fast...the best way to listen is, of course, not via MP3 and on headphones, in the dark, alone, in a quiet place, but you are at work and can't do that right now.

"Night Bats" is such a giant step for LL in terms of a more direct, sophisticated approach to the psychedelically-lyriced chambery gorgeousness they've been perfecting over the last crazy year. The title track is (from where I sit) an allegory about the inherent, small differences between people who deal with the day-to-day (day bats) and people who live artistically (night bats)--there's a hilarious line where vocalist Ritchie Young says, in his birdy falsetto of the night bats: "they nevaaah have moneey 'cause they nevahh stahhhted bands..."

Allison Moorer to release album on Ryko

Allison Moorer is set to release her Ryko debut, Crows, on February 9th, 2010. Produced by R.S. Field (Buddy Guy, John Mayall) at the House of David Studio in Nashville, TN, the 13-track album is a refined and lyrically honest collection of songs that is a marked stylistic departure from her previous work. Crows is the anticipated follow up to her critically acclaimed 2008 album, Mockingbird, which was a celebration of songs composed by a stunning cast of female songwriters including Nina Simone, Patti Smith, Cat Power, her sister Shelby Lynne, and more. It also follows Moorer’s first Grammy Award Nomination for the song “Days Aren’t Long Enough,” a composition she co-wrote with her husband, Steve Earle, for his Grammy Award Winning 2007 album Washington Square Serenade.

Speaking with Billboard Magazine regarding Crows, Moorer stated “I really just set myself free and just threw all the rules out the window.” Regarding the album’s title, Moorer offered “We have crows in the yard at our place up in Woodstock. I am a little obsessed with birds, and have been told that they are indeed our messengers from the other side. So I decided that instead of letting the crows make me uneasy, I would start to consider them as friendlies, and that they were actually bringing me a message of comfort.”

Ruby Marchand, head of A&R for Ryko, stated “Ryko is enormously proud to welcome Allison Moorer to our family of artists. Allison’s extraordinarily evocative songs and vocal style capture her unique signature in the singer/songwriter community. With the February 2010 release of Crows, Ryko celebrates the beginning of a worldwide relationship with Allison through an album of astonishing breadth and scope.”

Moorer’s 1998 song, “A Soft Place To Fall,” was included on the soundtrack to the feature film The Horse Whisperer, which led to an appearance in the film itself, as well as an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. The opportunity gained her worldwide attention and set the stage for her career. Since, Moorer has been featured on releases by Joan Baez, Kid Rock, The Chieftains, and Los Straightjackets.

She was seen in 2008 starring in Rebel Voices, a play based on Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove’s best-selling book Voices of a People’s History of the United States. The play combated hopelessness by igniting the forces responsible for arousing change and celebrating the indomitable human spirit.

On December 13th, 2009, Moorer will be seen in The People Speak, a beautiful and moving film inspired by A People’s History of the United States, and Voices of A People’s History of the United States. The film, presented by The History Channel, also features Bob Dylan, Morgan Freeman, Bruce Springsteen, Danny Glover, Matt Damon, John Legend, Rosario Dawson, Josh Brolin, Benjamin Bratt and more.

Taped in Nashville, INVITATION ONLY: CARRIE UNDERWOOD features the country sweetheart performing before a small studio audience, taking questions from fans and giving revealing and candid answers.

In this one-hour special, Underwood performs her biggest hits including “Before He Cheats,” “Last Name” and “So Small,” in addition to new, lively and energetic songs “Cowboy Casanova” and “Undo It” from Play On. During a casual question and answer segment with the audience, Underwood discusses how life has changed since “American Idol,” admits to being a sci-fi junkie, confesses she still gets excited when she hears her music on the radio, and more.

In addition to Underwood, upcoming episodes of INVITATION ONLY feature Brooks & Dunn premiering this Friday, October 30 at 10:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. and Tim McGraw on Friday, November 13 at 9:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. All times are ET/PT. Previous episodes have featured Alan Jackson, Reba McEntire, Brad Paisley, Darius Rucker and Keith Urban.

Underwood will release a new album, Play On, November 3 on 19 Recordings/Arista Nashville with producer Mark Bright. The four-time Grammy winner, 2009 Academy of Country Music (ACM) Entertainer of the Year and three-time reigning Country Music Association (CMA) and ACM Female Vocalist of the Year, wrote seven songs on the album. PLAY ON’s first single, “Cowboy Casanova,” is the fastest rising hit of the year at country radio and exploded with massive first-week sales of 110,236 digital copies. With this achievement, Underwood remains the only solo country artist this year to debut a digital single above the 100,000 mark – a feat she’s accomplished not once, but twice in 2009, having also hit the six digits with her recording of this past season’s American Idol farewell theme, “Home Sweet Home.”

Earlier this year, Underwood became the first country artist in history to achieve 10 #1 singles from their first two albums when “I Told You So” became the fifth consecutive chart-topper from Carnival Ride, which also included the smash, “Just a Dream,” and three hits Underwood co-wrote: “So Small,” “All-American Girl,” and “Last Name.” To date, Underwood is the U.S. best-selling American Idol winner with album sales over 10 million. On November 11, Underwood will co-host the 43rd Annual CMA Awards.

INVITATION ONLY: CARRIE UNDERWOOD is a High-Five Entertainment production, with Martin Fischer and Edie Lynn Hoback serving as executive producers. Margaret Comeaux and John Hamlin serve as executive producers for CMT.

Breathe Electric readying next single

Breathe Electric is wrapping up time in the studio where the Chicago band has been recording new tracks. Their next single, “Electronic Lover” will be available via iTunes in the next few weeks.

Gearing to tour throughout the rest of the year, the band kicks off a slew of club dates beginning Halloween at Mojoe’s in Orland Park outside Chicago. On November 15 in Seattle, the band will hit the road with Brokencyde and The Ready Set, followed by dates as direct support for Jeffree Star beginning December 2 in Baltimore.

Breathe Electric was formed in 2007 as the brainchild of Grant Harris. The electro-pop outfit released its self-produced debut EP Honestly and quickly gained momentum with extensive touring playing alongside bands like Never Shout Never, The Secret Handshake, and Automatic Loveletter, in addition to dates on this past summer’s Vans Warped Tour transforming each show into a non-stop dance party.

Within a year, Honestly would sell over 20,000 single downloads from iTunes and 5,000 physical copies independently through touring, online retailers including Smartpunk.com and Hot Topic locations across the country. After garnering recognition from various established music webzines including Absolutepunk.net and being noted as a “Buzz Seeker” artist on The Daily Chorus, Harris entered into the studio with Producer Ian Kirkpatrick to record the latest installment of infectious pop that would become the Emotion EP.

The Black Crowes to release new DVD in November

THE BLACK CROWES will release their new DVD, Cabin Fever on November 24, 2009 on the bands own label, Silver Arrow. The DVD includes footage from the recording sessions that ultimately became their critically acclaimed new CD, Before the Frost…Until the Freeze.

The innovative technique of inviting fans into the studio to become part of the process during recording is a rare experience and prudently, the band filmed the sessions. Before the Frost…Until the Freeze was recorded over a series of five nights in front of an intimate studio audience at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, NY.

The DVD of those sessions, Cabin Fever takes that experience one step further by allowing viewers to see behind the scenes footage of both the recording and songwriting sessions along with interaction between the band and the audience. The DVD gives fans that didn’t have the opportunity to attend the ability to feel the experience firsthand.

EXCLUSIVELY on the DVD will be THE ORIGINAL Little Lizzie Mae as well as COVERS of Velvet Underground’s Oh Sweet Nuthin & Fred Neil’s Dolphins. The DVD will also include the tracks Aimless Peacock, Good Morning Captain, Appaloosa, and Been a Long Time (Waiting on Love) among others from Before the Frost…Until the Freeze.

Chris Robinson conceived the concept of both Before the Frost…Until the Freeze, and the DVD, Cabin Fever: “I think we fulfilled a musical commitment to continue on the golden road of artistic independence. Approaching 20 years into our careers, we still are ambitious enough to push ourselves to create something unique that we have never done before.”

Critical acclaim and popular success has seen THE BLACK CROWES sell over 20 million albums worldwide. As they approach their upcoming 20th anniversary of the release of one of rock’s most influential records, Shake Your Money Maker, which produced such hits as Jealous Again, She Talks To Angels and Hard to Handle, they are time and again hailed as one of Rock and Roll’s best live acts.

THE BLACK CROWES are: Chris Robinson (vocals), Rich Robinson (guitar, vocals), Steve Gorman (drums), Sven Pipien (bass), Adam MacDougall (keyboards) and Luther Dickinson (guitar).

Ray Davies to release new album and tour

After a massively successful career spanning more than 40 years, Ray Davies, the legendary lead singer of The Kinks, is back with creative and unusual interpretations of songs from his extensive catalogue. These are not merely re-recordings of the originals but whole new choral adaptations. Often referred to as "almost indisputably rock's most literate, witty and insightful songwriter," Davies had the ambitious idea to collaborate with the 65-strong Crouch End Festival Chorus at the 2007 BBC Electric Proms in London to create The Kinks Choral Collection. This masterful CD will be in stores November 10th on Decca with a nationwide tour scheduled to coincide with the release. (U.S. dates below.)

Produced by Davies himself and with uplifting, sometimes epic, choral arrangements by David Temple, Steve Markwick and Davies, this union casts a fresh light to some of The Kinks’ timeless compositions including striking new versions of classics such as “You Really Got Me”, “All Day And All Of The Night”, “Waterloo Sunset” and many more.

Ray said of his Crouch End vocal colleagues; “With a song like ‘Waterloo Sunset’, I feel as if the people I wrote it for are singing it”.

And they display an ingenious palette of choral techniques. Hearing ‘See My Friends’ recast as an acappella gospel hymn is instantly striking, hugely magnifying the impact of Ray’s life-after-death lyrics.

A fascinating feature of the program includes a six-song suite from the 1968 album The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society. Although not as well known as some of the bigger hits, this collection is now widely regarded as The Kinks’ masterpiece, with songs like “Do You Remember Walter?” which is a poignant memoir of a vanished childhood world.

Overall this inspirational new album offers so much to explore and admire from fans who own the entire Kinks catalogue on vinyl or to complete newcomers. This is a great introduction to Davies’ idiosyncratic, delightful world. A slice of pop history revived: “Thank you for the days . . . Days I’ll remember all my life”.

Sweet Adelines set world record for largest singing lesson

Sweet Adelines International set the Guinness World Record for Largest Singing Lesson on Oct. 24, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. The record-setting event coincided with the 63rd annual International Convention and Competition held at the Sommet Center in Nashville, Tenn.

Sweet Adelines members are women who excel in singing the unique musical art form of barbershop harmony.

Music professional and past Sweet Adelines International Quartet Champion Peggy Gram led the lesson by demonstrating inspiring techniques for integrating the voice into the art form. The venue was filled with immense sound as 6,651 singers practiced the demonstrated techniques and sang simultaneously for the duration of the 10-minute lesson.

Guinness World Records official adjudicator Danny Girton, Jr., presided over the certificate ceremony to validate the record and confirm that the achievement met the criteria set forth by the organization.

"We welcome Sweet Adelines International into the Guinness World Records family for its inspirational and fun achievement," said Girton, Jr. while presenting the award.

Gram called the experience of teaching the Largest Singing lesson exhilarating.

"It was inspiring to demonstrate our unique style of music to thousands of singers from around the globe. While obtaining the world record is terrific, what's even more important is that it allowed us the opportunity to show how rewarding it is to sing barbershop harmony," said Gram after accepting the certificate for World's Largest Singing lesson.

Eager for the opportunity to make history, Sweet Adelines members lined up to participate.

"The enthusiasm of Sweet Adelines International members and fans was instrumental in achieving this record," said Kelly Kirchhoff, Director of Communications for Sweet Adelines International. "Instructing thousands of participants simultaneously is an extremely impressive accomplishment."

Johnny Game to release new album on Halloween

www.myspace.com/johnnygame1

Johnny Game – who is set to release the fourth and most accomplished album of an already storied career - is by no means your average hip hop star.

While a lot of rappers might talk the talk and call themselves soldiers, Johnny has truly lived it. A six-year stint in the army punctuated a musical career that started when he was just 11 years-old.

But far from slowing his career down, the military hiatus has made Johnny an even better artist; something confirmed by the relentless brilliance of new album ‘Hood Muzik’.

The record is both a continuation of the style that Johnny has made his own through his three previous albums and a departure from the usual mass-market hip hop and R&B that seems to dominate the airwaves.

A true independent, Johnny has produced tunes that show he has an ear for a hit, while still being able to lay down conscious, intelligent lyrics. Combined, this makes ‘Hood Muzik’ a record as much for the real hip hop headz as it is for the dancefloor.

Whether driving round town, listening at work or just chilling at home, the tracks here will have you both moving and thinking. And that’s not something you can say of most rappers…

Being an accomplished DJ as well as a rapper, Johnny has an ear for a smooth beat as well as killer rhyme. It is a talent that has already brought some major attention. He has worked with luminaries such as DJ Chronic, Question, Pappa Duck, Santino, Koncept and Meaksta, alongside a host of big name producers, and has contributed to the famous Coast 2 Coast mixtapes.

And it’s not just the industry that’s all a-blaze for Johnny. The people love him too. He has had three songs make it to number one on the soundclick.com hip hop chart. He has clocked up more than 30,000 plays on jango.com and an amazing 350,000 myspace plays. Not bad for an independent artist!

And one thing’s for sure: the only way is up for Johnny. Why? Because this soldier’s got Game.
The album, ‘Hood Muzik’, is out October 31st – don’t miss out.

Formed during the height of New York City's post-punk revival in 2003, THE BRAVERY began performing stylish dance, indie rock and an introductory gig at Brooklyn's Stinger Club gave way to a residency at Arlene's Grocery. Whispers on the street eventually led The Bravery to a recording contract with Island Def Jam in the States.and the Unconditional EP appeared in early 2005 as critics quickly pounced on the band, with the Village Voice proclaiming THE BRAVERY as "New York's Official Next Big Thing" while MTV and Rolling Stone deemed them an artist to watch. THE BRAVERY eventually decamped to the studio to work on their next album. Splitting their recording time between Atlanta and N.Y.C., the group's resulting The Sun and the Moon, which explored added textures and new instrumentation, surfaced in May 2007.

THE BRAVERY recently finished their new album Stir The Blood which is set for release on December 1, 2009. Their new single “Slow Poison” is available now.

Carlson adds, “With the winning design, we will create a snowboard that combines an amazing level of design, performance, and style with the work of an up-and-coming artist and Arbor’s eco-technologies.”

Arbor remains focused on finding solutions for a more sustainable future through a blend of art, technology, and eco-materials. The company’s creatively rich line of quality snowboards, skateboards and apparel can be found on www.rei.com.
