Genesis Awards nominees announced

Academy Award nominated feature film Up (Walt Disney/Pixar) and documentary film nominees The Cove (Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions/Participant) and Food, Inc. (Participant/ River Road/Magnolia) are among 49 major news and entertainment media works nominated for The Humane Society of the United States’ 24th Genesis Awards. Recognizing outstanding reporting and creative portrayals of animal protection issues in news and entertainment, The 24th Genesis Awards will be presented in a gala ceremony on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif.

“This is truly a benchmark year for feature and documentary films, with animal protection messages breaking through to mass audiences and garnering Academy Award recognition,” said Beverly Kaskey, senior director of the Hollywood office of The HSUS and executive producer of the annual Genesis Awards. “The news and entertainment media covered a wide range of animal issues in 2009, including dog rescue, factory farming, and chimps in research, but The Cove, which earned its director Louis Psihoyos a DGA Award, is proof that even a tough animal issue like Japan’s dolphin slaughter can resonate with audiences when it’s the basis of thrilling, cinematic storytelling.”

Hotel For Dogs (Dreamworks/Nickelodeon), The Men Who Stare at Goats (Overture/Smokehouse), and End of the Line (Arcane) round out the nominees in this year’s Genesis film and documentary categories, while headliners in a diverse range of broadcast and cable television categories include Talk Show nominees The Ellen DeGeneres Show (Warner Bros.) and Larry King Live (CNN), Sid Caesar Comedy Award contenders South Park (Comedy Central), Family Guy (FOX) and Monk (USA). In TV Drama, the nods go to The Closer (TNT) and Bones (FOX). Competing for the Reality Series Award are ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and Animal Planet’s Whale Wars and Animal Cops: Philadelphia.

In the world of news, NBC’s The Today Show squares off with CBS News Sunday Morning for best Morning News Show, and CBS’ 60 Minutes, ABC’s Nightline, and HLN’s Issues with Jane Velez Mitchell are all nominated in the TV Newsmagazine category. Newsweek, TIME, The New York Times Magazine, O, The Oprah Magazine, and More are cited for their coverage in two of four Genesis Award print categories.

Sponsored in part by Market Development Group, Inc.,Tenet, Prai Beauty Group and PetPlan, The 24th Genesis Awards will air on Animal Planet in April.

The annual Genesis Awards is the only event of its kind honoring the news and entertainment for showcasing animal issues and is presented by The Humane Society of the United States, the nation’s largest animal protection organization with more than 11 million supporters—one in every 28 Americans. http://www.humanesociety.org/genesis
