Late Night At Musso & Frank, http://lavatransforms.org/musso50710

* SATURDAY, JULY 10 *

The Visionaries of Esotouric host the Raymond Chandler's Los Angeles bus.
Bungalows. Crime. Hollywood. Blondes. Vets. Smog. Death. This was RaymondChandler’s Los Angeles, which resonated from deft and melancholy fits of his writer’s bow. Join us as we go down the mean streets that shaped his fiction, and that in turn shaped his hard-boiled times, in a four hour tour of downtown, Hollywood and surrounding environs: The Los Angeles Athletic Club, Musso & Frank, the Hotel Van Nuys, Paramount Studio’s gates, and much, much more, including a Chandler-themed gelato stop at East Hollywood cult favorite Scoops. Through published work, private correspondence, screenplays and film adaptations, we trace Chandler’s search for meaning and his anti-hero Philip Marlowe’s struggle to not be pigeonholed or give anything less than all he has, which lead them both down the rabbit hole of isolation, depression, and drink. $58, departs from Los Angeles Athletic Club, Downtown LA, 12pm. An Exhibition of Quilts by Ruby Nishio.
Gallery Opening is part of NELAart.com's Second Saturday Gallery Night. Sewing for over 70 years, Ruby Nishio transitioned to quilt making in 1992 after years of custom dressmaking and also dabbling in knitting, tatting, crocheting and embroidery. Nishio pulls her iconography from personal interests, such as gardening and traveling, as well as from life around her. She stitches fabric pieces together that form repetitive patterns that are then hand quilted. One quilt,Trip Around the World, 1998, includes 2193 two-inch squares of floweredfabrics where the stitched edges of each piece lose their sharpness and blend with the pieces next to each other forming an impressionist patterned garden.
