Model show in Glendora Aug. 14

It’s often said that the difference between men and boys is the price of their toys.

On Aug. 14, visitors to the Village Book Shop in Glendora will see a prime example of that maxim, but this time both men and boys (and their families) will take a major interest. Members of the Open Wheel Modeling Group on Proboards will display model cars and model airplanes, but not just any model cars. On display will be scale models of Indianapolis 500-winning race cars and sports cars.

Model enthusiasts can see “built-ups” as well as purchase model kits at the show that takes place 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the bookstore, 123 N. Glendora Ave., Glendora CA 91741.

Show organizer Russ Bundy of Glendora has been building scale models of historic airplanes and cars since childhood. He was able to combine his love of the Indianapolis 500 with model building by starting to construct scale models of winning racecars.

“Well once I started to build Indy 500 racer cars, I had to make a trip to Indianapolis and of course to the Hall of Fame Museum where I met my mentor and one of the very best modelers ever, Mr. Bob Clidinst,” Bundy recalled. “Bob has made the patterns for many of model companies of the years. They had a display of pace cars, so why not one of race winners to show how the cars have changed over the years.”

A meeting was arranged between Bundy and Vice President of the speedway, Terrell Gunther, where the idea was proposed.

“That was it. I got together 20 other modelers from around the nation and we put the display together. The display was only supposed to last two years – that was 16 years ago!”

Bundy’s skill is famous, and he’s built models for several celebrity collectors, including Al Unser, a four-time Indy 500 winner who collects scale models of historic aircraft.

Some of Bundy’s work is featured on the group’s web site:
