Punk-turned-folk troubadour CHUCK RAGAN recently announced a handful of West Coast tour dates supporting Social Distortion and Lucero. Kicking off on January 20th with two nights in Las Vegas, Ragan will be supporting his most recent solo album, Gold Country (2009, SideOneDummy) as a three piece with Jon Gaunt on fiddle and Joe Ginsberg on bass in large theaters, including a three-night stint in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Palladium. After recently wrapping a month long European solo tour with The Gaslight Anthem, Ragan is finishing out his year on tour in New Zealand and Australia with his influential band Hot Water Music, along with Bouncing Souls and Dave Hause. He’ll also be writing a new solo album throughout the Winter for a future release on SideOneDummy.
While in Europe, Ragan and Gaunt organized an intimate, benefit performance in association with Fluechtlingshilfe Bavaria and the Refugio e.V. on November 6th at the Eine Welt Haus in Munich, Germany for refugee children. Asking his fans to bring old musical instruments in lieu of a monetary entrance fee, Ragan’s intention was to donate as least one instrument to each and every refugee in the room.
“Rather than getting stuck in the same old grind of showing up, playing a show, getting paid – I think it’s a vital thing for people like us in our position to do for local communities and the kids,” Ragan says.
At the end of the evening, over a dozen guitars, harmonicas, flutes, violins, ukuleles, drums, and amps were collected, as well as a lot of money.
“All it takes is extra time and energy to possibly change lives in local communities,” he adds.
Best known as the guitarist/vocalist of the revered 90’s punk band Hot Water Music, Chuck Ragan’s solo work is influenced by Steve Earle and Pete Seeger. Gold Country was produced by Ragan and features Gaunt on the fiddle and George Rebelo (Hot Water Music) on drums.
Following his run supporting Social Distortion, Ragan will be hosting his 4th annual Revival Tour Spring 2011, with tour dates to be announced next year. Hot Water Music is currently writing new material at their own pace for their forthcoming album.
