Tribute album released to help out The Prids

During the summer of 2008, indie rock band The Prids took to the road in support of their Something Difficult EP. On July 20th while on their way to Los Angeles, the band and two of their loved ones were severely injured when a blown tire caused their van to crash on I-5 in Southern California. Their vehicle was totaled and all of their equipment destroyed.

After the accident, the band received over $16,000 in generous donations from friends and fans around the world, allowing them to purchase a new van and replace their equipment. However, they still had large medical bills to pay.

When Oliver Ackerman, front man for a Place to Bury Strangers, heard what had happened to one of his favorite bands, he suggested recording a Prids tribute album with proceeds going to the band to help pay their medical expenses. The tribute album, Dots to Connect, features covers of Prids songs by 18 amazing artists including A Place to Bury Strangers, The Upsidedown and The Suffocation Keep. All of the artists who contributed to the record are friends of the band who wanted to lend a helping hand.

This digital-only release is available through iTunes and Amazon.com.

The story of The Prids begins innocently enough. Somewhere in Missouri in March of 1995, Mistina Keith (bass, vocals) saw David Frederickson (guitar, vocals) lead a so-so pop band through a set of songs at a house party. Always the smooth talker, Mistina convinced David to leave the band he was fronting, visit a pawn shop with her and buy some cheap guitars so that they could start their own band, even though she had never played an instrument in her life. While they figured out how to master their instruments, they listened to the likes of The Smiths, Sonic Youth, Unrest, The Jesus and Mary Chain and Heavenly and began writing songs together.

The Prids, whose moniker derives from a nickname David had for Mistina, was born.

The two left Missouri after a few years, bouncing around the backwaters of Midwest scenes in Lincoln and Omaha before finally settling in Portland, Oregon in the late ‘90s.

David and Mistina continued writing songs together, releasing the Duracraft and Glide, Screamer EPs in 2000 and 2002 and their debut LP, Love Zero in 2003. Somewhere in between, the two fell in love, got married and divorced. Like other songwriting couples before them, they continued creating music together and today remain the best of friends.

Drummer Joey Maas joined the band in 2005 and in 2006, The Prids released their second full length, …Until the World is Beautiful. The album nailed down the heart-bursting reverie of their live show, an experience matched by few. With a hypnotic and commanding sound full of lush, pounding rhythms, the record was an exponential build on all the things David and Mistina had been affected by in rock 'n' roll - music that is drunk on sadness, finds beauty in letting go and keeps hope alive when things fall apart. In 2007, The Prids released their Something Difficult EP and a year later, keyboardist Maile Tarries joined the group, completing their current lineup.

In April 2009, Dots to Connect, a Prids tribute album was released. A Place to Bury Strangers, The Upsidedown, The Suffocation Keep and 15 other bands all contributed their covers of Prids’ songs for the record.

Back in the studio, The Prids are currently working on new material for a fall release. If their prior work is any indication of what’s to come for this dynamic four piece, we are all in for a treat.
