Social skills workshop for autistic children offered in November

Developing Meaningful Relationships: Teaching Authentic Social Skills at Change Lives

Presented by: Mitchell Taubman, Ph.D.

Relatively limited attention in ABA has been devoted to the social area, and focus has typically been on basic skills. Other approaches have tried to address more complex social skills; however, they typically propose mere experiences that somehow produce social effects. Regrettably, as with much in autism treatment, social growth does not occur simply. This workshop is concerned with the effective application of contemporary ABA to a range of social skills for children with autism.

Topics to be discussed will include:
• ABA and Social Skills
• Other Approaches to the Social Skills Dilemma
• Social Skills Instructional Techniques: The Teaching Interaction
• The Problems with Existing Social Skills Curricula
• The Present Solution: The Social Skills Taxonomy
• Programming for Transfer to Everyday Life
• Making it Real: Authentic Competencies vs. Rote Skills
• True Relationships
