HD Camera Rentals to offer digital cinema workshop Saturday in Burbank

Technicians from HD Camera Rentals, a leading L.A.-based rental house, will share their knowledge and expertise about digital cinema at the annual J.L. Fisher event on Saturday, May 15, in Burbank, Calif.

A team of technicians from HD Camera Rentals (www.HDCameraRentals.com) will show off the latest digital cameras, equipment and accessories, provide demonstrations and answer questions in a relaxed atmosphere, one on one, throughout the day.

The fifth J.L. Fisher, SOC, ICB & ASC Annual Mixer is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday (May 15) at J.L. Fisher, 1000 West Isabel St. in Burbank. The free event provides film industry professionals with an opportunity to learn about new products and techniques from top suppliers throughout the region. This is HD Camera Rental’s third year participating in the popular event.

“This is a really important, and fun, event for us because it gives us a chance to meet the people who work with our equipment and share our knowledge base with them in a relaxed setting,” said Michael Mansouri, who leads the technical crew at HD Camera Rentals.

“Digital cinema continues to evolve and advance at an almost dizzying rate,” Mansouri added. “HD Camera Rentals takes pride in staying in front of the pack with the most advanced, cutting-edge equipment available, and we look forward to offering our expertise this weekend.”

Mansouri recently returned from the filming of Academy Award-winning Director Danny Boyle’s new movie, “127 Hours”, on location in Utah. HD Camera Rentals supplied digital cameras, high-speed lenses, accessories and a technical crew on the eight-week shoot.

J.L. Fisher, a manufacturer of dollies and jib arms, is the host of the annual event, which attracts a wide range of film industry professionals, including DPs, cinematographers, camera operators, 1st ACs, DITs and general camera enthusiasts. The event will include a BBQ lunch and seminars. No RSVP is necessary. Parking is available at neighboring lots on Isabel St. Signs will be posted. Yes – the Ultras render absolutely beautifully, although I did try to use our full array of lenses. It was nice to know the calibration charts were right on the money for speed ramps. I did a lot of speed ramping because I wanted to see how well the camera could actually ramp from 2 fps up to 150 fps in 3.9 seconds – and it did it flawlessly every single time. We'd calculate our T-stops for the different frame-rates, plug them into the program and boom, it was right on the money with the correct exposure.

We also used the ARRI Lightweight Zoom, which was fantastic. Even in the brief footage we saw I was very impressed with the way it rendered, the way it looked – everything. We used it for the calf-roping and the horsemen running at us; I believe I might have used it for the motorcycles as well.
