NHL holds Beard-a-thon for charity

The second annual NHL playoff “Beard-a-thon” (www.beardathon.com ), proudly sponsored by King of Shaves, has raised over $200,000 for NHL team charities during the first round of the 2010 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs. Across the nation, over 4,000 hockey fans are participating in a great hockey tradition and raising money for local causes.

Currently, the Pittsburgh Penguins lead all NHL teams with $60,633 raised for the Mario Lemieux Foundation. The fans of the Washington Capitals have raised over $35,000 for Washington Capitals Charities, while fans of the Los Angeles Kings raised over $26,000 for the Kings Care Foundation. In addition to the Penguins, the playoff beards and funds will continue to grow in Detroit, Chicago, Boston, San Jose, and Philadelphia, as each of the teams battle to reach the Conference Finals.

The Beard-a-thon, supported by King of Shaves, encourages fans to “grow one for the team” for the duration of the Stanley Cup Playoffs and have their friends, family, and co-workers pledge them. Fans that are unable, or unwilling to grow a playoff beard, can pledge their favorite NHL player or build a virtual playoff beard on the beard-a-thon website, and all pledges are tax deductible.

For more information, to enroll, or to pledge beard growers, log onto www.beardathon.com. Fans without a team in the NHL playoffs can also pledge to grow a beard and support “Hockey Fights Cancer”, a joint initiate between the NHL and the NHLPA.

About the Playoff Beard
A playoff beard is the superstitious practice of a National Hockey League player not shaving during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The player stops shaving when his team enters the playoffs and does not shave until his team is eliminated or wins the Stanley Cup. The playoff beard tradition was started by the New York Islanders’ dynasty teams of the 1980’s. In recent years, other sports and other players have claimed the playoff beard tradition, but it is, and always will be, a hockey tradition.

About the Beard-a-thon™
The Beard-a-thon was first introduced for the 2009 NHL playoffs. Last season, a total of $350,000 was raised for local charity. The Beard-a-thon program is managed by CENERGY, a NY based sports marketing agency with clients that include the National Hockey League, MLB Network, and Turner Sports.
