Vox Femina to hold garden party May 23

Vox Femina will be hosting a Garden Party on May 23rd in Altadena. Joining them will be supporters such as Dee Wallace (ET: The Extraterestrial), Romi Dames (Hanna Montana) and Channing Chase (Mad Men).

Event: Iris In Wonderland

Start Time: Sunday, May 23 at 2:00pm - 4:00pm

Where: Altadena, CA

The house was built in 1925 by architect Arthur Hutchinson who apprenticed with Myron Hunt. Mr. Hutchinson also built the So. Pasadena City Hall and the Faculty Club at UCLA. The house was built for Mr & Mrs Kirk White and has been recognized in numerous Southland articles for the architecture and for how the architect positioned the house on the original property to take advantage of the mountain views and golf course views (the golf course that our house overlooked was destroyed by the Altadena floods of 1934, hence the houses on the other side of Mendocino).

After its purchase in 1999, the house was in a terrible way. The current owners set out to upgrade the plumbing, fix the roof which leaked, upgrade the electrial, removed 8-10 coats of paint on the windows, doors and molding, remove rat infested insulation from the attic, fabricate new window screens, restore all window hardware, refinish all the floors, the list goes on, and now the house is in Mary Whiteside's book Mediterrianian Design.

The garden is currently a 3/4 acre lot, the original property was much larger and included a swimming pool and stable. The garden was designed by Pasadena landscape designer, Tom Cox & Associates, who has been featured several times in the LA Times for his gardens throughout Los Angeles. The garden has been on several garden tours by organizations such as: The Garden Conservancy, LA Arboretum, Bay Area Horticultural Society, The Grace Center, Seattle Horticultural Society, The Friends of The Gamble House, Pacific Horticultural Foudation.

A garden tour is included to those interested. The Rose Garden has become the owners passion. Most of the roses are labeled and are mostly hybrid teas. Classics include: Mr Lincoln, Chysler Imperial, Double Delight, Fragrant Cloud, Effiel Tower, Betty White, Elle, Secret, Medallion, Neptune, Black Magic. Newer ones include: JFK, Pope John Paul, Varoom, April In Paris, Pink Promise, Bella'roma, Tahitian Sunset, Della Reese, Heather Lenkin, Strike it Rich.
