Orange Sherbet and Hot Buttered Rum release "Campfire Sing-Along"

www.orangesherbet.org

Fun California music celebrating nature & campfire sing-alongs!

Campfire Sing-Along, a collaboration between Orange Sherbet, a hip Bay Area kid’s band, and established bluegrass act Hot Buttered Rum, has a winning combination of some 50-plus musicians, including 5 year-olds and grandmas. Dan Zanes has a hilarious spoken-word ending on the original One Man Band, and the seasoned traditionals bring back the past with fiddle, banjo, mandolin, stand-up bass, guitars, and stunning vocals. Orange Sherbet performs alchemy by combining the perfect ingredients; a weekend singing and strumming with Hot Buttered Rum, and a day with friends singing camp songs.

Interview with Tamsen Fynn of Orange Sherbet:

When did you decide to record Campfire Sing-Along?

We were at Rodeo Beach in The Marin Headlands with our families when I told Jill & Steve I wanted to connect kids with nature by recording camp songs. Steve suggested asking their old friends from Hot Buttered Rum to record with us. We all loved that idea!

How is Campfire Sing-Along an environmental/eco-friendly cd?

The songs have been inspiring many families we know to have campfire sing-alongs and roast marshmallows anywhere they can! Parents remember childhood summer camp, and kids beg for camping trips. For packaging, we chose the eco-wallet, from Discmakers, which is printed on recycled board and has a side envelope for the cd and no plastic tray. It is much less bulky, so it also saves resources & shipping space.

What made you decide to donate cd proceeds to Muir Woods National Park?

We performed at a park event and it was raining, so the show was in the gift shop. I realized it would be great to offer our cds at cost to the Muir Woods store so they could do some long-term fundraising since people often buy something from the gift shop when they visit the park. My hope is that we can offer the same opportunity to other state and national park stores.

How long did it take to get the songs recorded?

I was secretly hoping we could finish all of the songs with Hot Buttered Rum over one weekend. On the first morning when I showed up with coffee & scones for everyone, Jill looked at me in dismay and croaked “I lost my voice, I’m so sorry”. I laughed, because after hours of coordinating schedules, song details, and the recording timeline, it seemed ridiculous to be stopped by such a basic thing. We recorded, leaving out vocals involving Jill, and added her parts and my parts later. It allowed us to finish because we weren’t spending extra time worrying about every vocal take being perfect. That weekend was magical.

Was Dan Zanes easy to contact?

Surprisingly, Dan was very accessible. I wrote One Man Band with Dan in mind, a song inspired by my husband’s one string banjo, a quirky instrument made out of a mixing bowl, a two-pronged serving fork, and a piece of wire. I was imagining Dan in a 40s movie with Sandra Bernhard, swapping tales of train hopping adventures.

Did you record together when he was on tour in the Bay Area?

No, we laid our parts down, Dan recorded his vocals in New York, then we added our final bits. We got to shout “Catch That Train!” at the end of the song, after his album Catch That Train was out. That cracked us up. Another highlight for me was saying “It’s been a long time” as if we used to party together in our rock bands before singing kid’s music, and of course, his amazing ad-lib when he invites a bear to go on the road with him & start a band.
