AFRO FUNKE' LIVE PRESENTS

MR. VALLENATO
Jorge Villarreal (accordion), AKA Mr. Vallenato, is a Mexican American from Edinburg, Texas, who has played Colombian Folk Accordion Music (Cumbia & Vallenato) since he was 12 years old. He was introduced to typical Colombian Cumbia and Vallenato music when he was 8, listening to records of Colombia’s most acclaimed masters of folk accordion music with his father.
In 1995, Villarreal played for three years with the legendary Colombian Cumbia master, Aniceto Molina in San Antonio, Texas. With Molina, he toured New York, Mexico and Central America; he also recorded ontwo of Molina’s albums.

In 1997, Mr. Vallenato moved to Los Angeles to further develop his musical career. During 2000 and 2001,he traveled to Valledupar, Colombia, the city in which Vallenato music was born, to see with his own eyes Colombia’s most important accordion festival, “Accordion Legends Music Festival”. These trips helped him tofocus on his accordion playing, learn and experience Colombia and its culture and play a more roots authentic Colombian Vallenato.

In 2007, Villarreal was invited to play with Colombian Grammy winner rock/Alternative icons Aterciopeladosat the Bacardi Live Music Festival at Olvera Street in Downtown L.A, for a crowd of more than 7,000 people, sharing the stage with Maldita Vecindad, Calle 13 and Alejandra Guzman.

In Los Angeles, he has also collaborated with Colombian Cumbia singer Lucho Campillo y La Potencia,as well as Electronic/Afro-Colombian rhythms band Palenke Soultribe whose latest album “Oro” (2009) features Mr. Vallenato. La Sonora Show, Amandititita, La Sonora Meliyará, Venezuelan singer-songwriter Tania Sáenz, Colombian Jazz guitarist Juan Carlos Quintero, Peruvian rock/pop artist Santino and Sonoclip have been other of his collaborations. www.myspace.com/mrvallenato
