Lanie Lane in LA May 2 and 3

Australian songstress Lanie Lane makes her U.S. debut in May with a trio of performances in Los Angeles (May 2-3) and New York (May 10). At home, Lane--who recently concluded an Australian tour with Justin Townes Earle, and performed sold-out shows at both the Sydney Festival and Adelaide Fringe earlier this year--is featured on the April 2011 cover of Time Out Sydney, where she’s lauded for “mixing up blues, rockabilly, folk and swing into a timeless whole, topped with a gorgeously pure voice and a swag of songs that could have plausibly been written any time between the 1920s and today.” Adding sass to the smoky, sultry sounds of a bygone era, Lanie (pronounced “Lannie”) Lane draws on the past and plants it very firmly in the here and now. Imbued with the spirit of Muddy Waters, channeling the class of Doris Day and sparkling with the pizzazz of The Andrews Sisters, Lanie wraps the sounds of a golden age around a voice that is as rich and warm as it is sweet. Having grown up surrounded by blues, jazz, folk and soul, it’s no surprise that Lanie has taken the classic sounds of the ‘30s, ‘40s, and ‘50s and made them her own. Musical signposts, though, are only surface grime. As the largely self-taught musician explains to Time Out Sydney, “I feel like I’m a mix of modern and vintage. It’s not like I’m a retro act…I’m not conservative with my style.
