On Saturday, June 18, 2011, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., five of Southern California’s most respected tribute bands will perform in head–to–head competition for $3,500 in cash prizes and tribute fame at Summer And Music’s (SAM) third annual Battle of the Tribute Bands.
Representing an impressive array of sound (not just your typical good ole’ classic rock tributes, though there’ll be plenty of that), this year’s Battle of the Tribute Bands marks the first large-scale event of SAM 2011—Downtown Long Beach’s homegrown, sustainable concert series, providing an entire summer of free music to the public.
Battle of the Tribute Bands is likely the only event of the summer where tunes from The White Stripes, Stone Temple Pilots and The Pretenders will face off with the likes of AC/DC and The Who. Performances will be held outdoors on Sustainable Waves’ solar-powered sound in the Rainbow Harbor amphitheater, located at the intersection of Pine Avenue and Shoreline Drive.
SAM Co-Founder Rand Foster—who, as owner of Long Beach’s most beloved record shop Fingerprints, knows a thing or two about good music—calls Battle of the Tribute Bands, “A shameless good time!” Foster said, “This event includes much of the popular music that has built the collective soundtrack of our lives. The bands present themselves with a respectful nod to the importance of the originals, but with a nod and a wink to the inherent silliness of putting on a costume to go to work.”
On the bill for three rounds of rock ‘n’ roll combat: Stone Temple Co-Pilots (a tribute to Stone Temple Pilots), Pretentious (a tribute to The Pretenders), Hello Operator (a tribute to The White Stripes), TNT (a tribute to AC/DC) and The Who Show (a tribute to The Who). Crowd pleaser Nick “Fierce” Pierce will emcee and guide you through tribute performances by this dedicated array of talent, which will have you flashing back and head-banging all afternoon.
Tribute bands will compete in a three-round elimination process at the behest of three celebrity judges, including Oingo Boingo’s Johnny Vatos, Downtown Long Beach Associates President and CEO Kraig Kojian and The Press Telegram’s favorite columnist Tim Grobaty. The afternoon’s spinning will be handled by local favorite DJ Lithuanian Prince in between tribute sets.
Two bands will play back-to-back on a solar-powered stage, moving to the next round after a decibel reading of the crowd’s applause and the judges’ consensus. Prize money will go to the three crowd favorites: $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second and $500 for third.
Conveniently situated in the heart of Rainbow Harbor’s restaurant boardwalk, Battle of the Tribute Bands will be the prime opportunity to rock out to old hits while you grab a bite to eat at one of the many dockside dining destinations.
Showcasing a renewed focus on environmental concerns, all concerts will be held on self-contained solar-powered stages. The Downtown Long Beach Associates (DLBA) and Long Beach Redevelopment Agency (RDA), SAM’s major sponsors, in conjunction with SAM founding members, are partnering with Sustainable Waves, a San Diego/Austin-based all-solar staging, lighting and sound company offering 100 percent pollution-free concerts.
Alternative transportation to the event is encouraged, with several public transit options offered by Long Beach Transit. Local cycling advocacy group Long Beach Cyclists will also be offering free bike valet parking throughout the day.
The SAM series features a stockpile of local and regional talent, including Long Beach musicians, writers, photographers, videographers, graphic designers and media professionals, as well as enormous support from local businesses and community organizations. This year, SAM will also be fortified by the dedicated efforts of an entire team of event-coordinating music lovers and by a unique partnership with DLBA. It’s truly of the people and for the people.
