September 13 New Gardens for New Directions at Descanso Gardens with Brian Sullivan

Our beautiful sister garden in La Cañada Flintridge has evolved greatly since its founding in 1939. Today’s changes include strides toward sustainability and preservation. This program highlights new gardens at the recently renovated Boddy House, as well as plans for expansion of the historic oak woodlands. Many extraordinary plants used and to be installed will be shown in class. Brian is a serious plant lover, master of horticultural displays and director of horticulture at Descanso Gardens.



September 20 Easy Native Plants with Orchid Black

Discover a fabulous palette of easy-to-grow California species and cultivars—including beautiful free-flowering plants proven to perform in varied locales and conditions. Beautiful images and live plant materials will be shown. Orchid is a native garden consultant, designer and lecturer ( www.nativesanctuar​y.wordpress.com ​) and a state board member of the California Native Plant Society.



September 27 Tree Damage & the Great 2011 San Gabriel Valley Windstorm: Predestined or Preventable? with Frank McDonough

This talk is an examination of trees destroyed or damaged by the major windstorm that swept through the area last year. There will be discussion of recent findings on tree failure, and proper tree care that can be applied to your garden, its trees and your safety. No doubt, you’ll leave with greater appreciation for those grand green beings that inhabit your property. Frank is the Arboretum’s botanical information consultant.



October 4 Field Trip: Three Groundbreaking San Gabriel Valley Gardens

Our first outing of the season takes us to three beautiful San Gabriel Valley home landscapes that concentrate on native plants, accentuate a sense of place, emphasize sustainable gardening practices and celebrate the pleasures of year-round outdoor living. The designers will join us on site: Orchid Black in Sierra Madre and Andreas Hessing (www.scrubjaystudios.com ) in Monrovia and Altadena. Preregistration required.



October 11 Lush Landscapes/Little Water with Richard Hayden

Water-wise landscapes can be lush and sensuous, too. This talk’s colorful images of low-water plants, unique planting designs and distinctive garden features prove that gardens can be exuberant, even tropical in feeling, and still meet today’s strict irrigation standards. Richard is a Los Angeles-based landscape designer (www.haydenlandscape.com ) whose vibrant site-sensitive work has appeared in Architectural Digest, Elle Decor and Martha Stewart Living magazines, among others. He is president of the Greater Los Angeles District of APLD (Assoc. of Professional Landscape Designers).



October 18 Field Trip: Magic Growers, Pasadena

Few local wholesale nurseries are as beloved as Magic Growers in Pasadena, and we’re been invited again to visit their grounds, peruse the beds and purchase plants at great prices! Magic is known for its always interesting selection of flowering perennials and water-wise plants for mediterranean climates such as ours. Production Manager Joe Brosius will share his knowledge, reveal new items and discuss future offerings (www.magicgrowers.com ). Bring water and wear comfortable shoes, a hat and sunscreen. Preregistration required.



October 25 Crafting a Hillside Oasis: Water Harvesting, Edibles and Natives with John Lyons and Leigh Adams

This beautifully illustrated program follows the step-by-step development of a unique water-harvesting garden in the foothills of Altadena—a now-thriving organic garden that blends fruit trees, native plants and storm water, a garden lush with flowering mounds and rich with pollinators. John is a garden designer and avid practitioner of organic garden cultivation (www.thewovengarden.com ). Leigh is a talented artist in many media—including basketry, gourd, mosaic and glass art (www.laglassart.com ).



November 1 A Cut Above: An Introduction to Pruning with David Lannom

Don’t miss this important, fun and useful class on maintaining plant health through proper maintenance. Class coverage includes basic botany as it relates to pruning, reasons behind pruning and rules of when to make or NOT to make cuts. Tools of the trade will also be discussed, along with how to make proper cuts—all demonstrated in class with gusto!! Handouts will be provided, too! Dave is professor of horticulture at Mt. San Antonio College, a respected member of the International Plant Propagators Society and a much-adored and beloved instructor.
