Humane Society University to offer Emergency Animal Sheltering workshops

Humane Society University, the training arm of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is bringing their national training program, Emergency Animal Sheltering to four cities across the U.S. Emergency Animal Sheltering (EAS) is intended to prepare volunteers to serve at emergency shelters for pets and animals evacuated or displaced in the event of a disaster (i.e. hurricane, wildfire, tornado and more) According to HSUS, there were between 10,000 and 15,000 dogs and cats handled in temporary shelters throughout Mississippi and Louisiana after hurricane Katrina. Workshops like Emergency Animal Sheltering will help prepare volunteers to care for animals in crisis.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
Information covered in this course is vital for dealing with any large-scale animal sheltering operation. Course topics include: Introduction to disaster and emergency management, community planning, types of emergency shelters for animals, meeting the animals’ needs, logistics, human resources, worker health and safety, administrative issues, legal issues, media/public relations and closing the shelter
