From Carla at Rockr Grl:
Hey folks,
Happy election week!!
I know it's been a long, long time since I had news for you, but today I have TWO items to tell you about.
First, I am going to be interviewed live on an NPR radio show from North Carolina - it's called The State of Things and it airs tomorrow, November 7th at 12:15PM EST (9:15AM on the west coast). The topic is - not surprisingly - the state of women in rock. You can stream it live or listen to it archived on the site after 3PM at:
www.wunc.org/tsot
I am particularly excited about this because I will be on with one of the producers of the Girls Rock film AND we are preceded by Richard Lewis of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Talk about a tough act to follow!
I also want to let you know about a really fantastic event I am hosting at the Institute for Musical Arts in Goshen, Massachusetts on Saturday, December 6th. I know it has been a LONG TIME since the last ROCKRGRL event and people keep asking "when are you going to do another conference" so thanks to Ann Hackler and June Millington at IMA, we've got a wonderful program planned.
It's an all-day symposium called "I WILL $URVIVE: MAKING IT IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS. Keynote speaker is the legendary ROBIN LANE of ROBIN LANE AND THE CHARTBUSTERS, recording artist and iconic fixture in the Northeast's music scene of the early `80s.
Here's the scoop:
As the charismatic voice behind Robin Lane and the Chartbusters, she released three albums on Warner Brothers and her video for the hit song, "When Things Go Wrong" was the 11th video ever played by MTV on its first day of broadcast on August 1, 1980. Robin was dropped from her label when she decided to have a child. Today, she lends her talents to A Woman's Voice, a songwriting program she created and facilitates for trauma survivors in prisons, women's centers, senior centers and at-risk youth programs. A documentary about her life is currently in the works.
Robin Lane will be interviewed by me, ROCKRGRL Magazine founder Carla DeSantis, an advocate for women in music.
The all day symposium will continue with three panels:
Yesterday: Are the Glory Days of the Music Industry Behind Us?
Today: How To Make a Living In Tough Economic Times
Tomorrow: What Will a Career in Music Look Like in the Future?
Esteemed music business panelists include:
Leah Kunkel (recording artist, entertainment attorney)
Emily Lichter (Public Emily)
Beth Tallman (Rykodisc Records)
Brooke Primont (Cherry Lane Publishing)
Nini Camps (musician)
Kristin Bredimus (Ourstage.com, Boston Music Awards, NEMO Music Conference)
Liz Borden (Musician, DJ)
June Millington (musician, producer, IMA co-founder)
Kudisan Kai (vocalist, Berklee College instructor)
Ann Hackler (Executive Director, IMA)
Norma Coates (Media and Information Studies, University of Western Ontario)
Marci Cohen(music journalist, music librarian)
Although the event is geared towards helping women navigate the murky waters of the music business, all are encouraged to attend.
Tickets are $75.00 each ($50 for students) and include lunch and refreshments. Purchase seats online at:
www.ima.org/pages/rockrgrlimaday.html
For up-to-the-minute information, directions to the IMA site and to register online visit

Hope to see you there!!! And on the radio.
Rock on,
Carla
