Pasadena Museum of History to hold show & tell April 11
Pasadena Museum of History invites the public to a “show and tell” program on Sunday, April 11, at 2:00 pm that looks at family memorabilia, antiques and flea market finds in a new light. Please, Please – Don’t Throw That Out, will be held in the Avery Dennison Auditorium (150 S. Orange Grove), located just south of the Pasadena Museum of History parking lot.
The fun, fast-paced program takes a familiar “Antiques Road Show” format into a new direction. Our panel of experts, including both historians and antiques/collectibles connoisseurs, will evaluate objects not just with an eye to their collectible or resale values, but also on the basis of the stories they can tell to help us better understand the history of our families, our communities, and the experiences/lifestyles of earlier generations.
See what fascinating items have been rescued from attics and closets or the back of bureau drawers and what our panel of experts has to say about this “old stuff. If you have something you would like to share at the program, contact Brad Macneil at 626.577.1660, ext. 16 or bmacneil@pasadenahistory.org.
Tickets: Museum Members Free; Non-Members $5. Reservations suggested; please call 626.577.1660, ext 10. Free parking available in the Museum or Avery Dennison parking lots; entrances to both lots on Walnut St. For additional information, visit www.pasadenahistory.org.

Collegiate Field Tournament Cup at the Rose Bowl Saturday
Pasadena is known worldwide for its annual Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game, but did you know it’s also a renowned college town?
Student teams from Caltech, Art Center College of Design, Fuller Theological Seminary, Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts, Pacific Oaks College and Pasadena City College will vie for top honors in the first Collegiate Field Tournament Cup on Saturday, April 3, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Rose Bowl Stadium.
Will it be the scientists? The chefs? The artists? The teachers? The faithful? The undeclared? Admission is free and everyone is invited to root for their favorite teams.
Creative challenges including monster croquet, Frisbee toss, cheeseburger challenge, meteor catch, blind faith challenge and giant puzzle race will round out a day that will be as much about bonding among Pasadena’s world-renowned colleges as it is about competition.
Cheeseburger Challenge – This challenge pays homage to the fact that the cheeseburger was invented in Pasadena; it’s also a nod to the aspiring chefs of the Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts who may invent the next gastronomic superstar that will become a staple of American life. Game officials will provide each team with two pounds of ground beef and a small grill that the team must assemble. Each team will add their own special ingredients to prepare a cheeseburger and serve it to the judges for evaluation.
Frisbee Toss – This challenge is a tribute to the fact that Frisbee golf was invented in Pasadena and the first Frisbee disc course was constructed at Oak Grove Park near JPL. Each team will have three opportunities to throw Frisbees into the end zones while team members attempt to catch them. The team with the most point wins the challenge.
Meteor Catch – This contest acknowledges the difficult scientific challenges Caltech students and researchers undertake on a daily basis. Each team will attempt to save the world from destruction as meteor balls are launched toward them. Each team must catch the meteor balls in a device they quickly construct from materials provided to them. The team that catches the most meteors wins.
Blind Faith Challenge – This is a nod to the thousands of students who have graduated from Fuller Theological Seminary over the years. A number of colored flag pendants for each team will be placed across the stadium field. A blindfolded team member who is not aware of the placement of the flags will be directed by fellow team members to each pendant. The team that retrieves all of their flags and runs them to the end zone first wins.
Monster Croquet – This highlights the fact that Pasadena City College is one of the largest community colleges in the nation. Each team member will use a mallet to push an oversized beach ball through a series of giant balloon arches. The team that succeeds in getting their beach ball through all the wickets the fastest wins.
Giant Puzzle Race – Educators who graduate from Pacific Oaks College teach their students to solve problems. Each team will retrieve the pieces to a jigsaw puzzle from throughout the stadium and rush them to the field for construction. The team that finishes putting their puzzle together first wins.
Uniform Judging – There’s absolutely nothing uniform about Pasadena’s superior institutions of higher learning, but uniforms for each team will have been designed expressly for this competition by the schools they represent. A panel of judges will select the best team uniform based on attractiveness, originality and thematic connection to the school’s learning focus.
Parking is free in Lots K and F. Entry to the stadium will be accessible through the south gate only.
The Pasadena Collegiate Field Tournament is sponsored by the city of Pasadena, idealab! and Honda Design Center.

Monrovia church members to walk for water
Last year one man walked one hundred miles, taking 225,000 steps in 64 hours, to raise awareness of the importance of safe drinking water. This year the same man, Pastor Rob Spina of New Beginnings Family Church in Monrovia, enlisted nearly twenty people to do the same beginning April 7th through the finale on April 10th at 10:00 a.m.
Every day, one billion people have no access to clean safe drinking water. Eighty countries are subjected to water shortages forcing millions to drink from polluted water sources. Every 15 seconds, a child dies from a water-related disease. Every year, almost three million people worldwide die from water-borne diarrheal illnesses. Spina wants his church to make a difference in the world.
“Our vision is to make a difference by building thirty fresh water wells in third world countries,” Spina said. “Our wells will be installed in villages where 500 people a day will have access to a clean water source.”
With support from parishioners and the community, who are sponsoring the team of twenty, they will give 15,000 people a day fresh clean drinking water.
“What we think is normal is not for some. Now we get the opportunity to drastically change the lives of children by changing the conditions in which they live,” Spina said, adding that the church’s work in Monrovia will reach more people who are in dire need, providing them with a life-giving source: fresh, bacteria-free water.
Team members include Greg Amador of La Puente; and Don Barro, Robert Spina and Pastor Rob Spina of Azusa; Cindy Mirkamali and Pat Garcia of Monrovia; Ron Munoz and Ray Vega of Covina; Frank Amador II and Karissa Amador of Irvine; Dawna Hamm and Paul McKiernan of El Monte; Dora Gonzales, Carolina Gonzales and Mary Millsaps of Temple City; Alex Cruz and Debbie Coffman of Baldwin Park; Frank Amador IV of Los Angeles; and William Hausler of Rosemead.
“Jesus walked on water, we’re walking for water,” Spina said.
To learn how you can sponsor a water well, contact 626-241-3239 or visit www.nbfclive.com to make a donation. The water walk begins and concludes at New Beginnings Family Church located at 2780 S. Peck Rd., in Monrovia, CA 91016.
Anyone can track Spina and the team from New Beginnings Family Church in Monrovia during their one hundred mile walk by following them on Twitter at www.twitter.com/waterwalking, visiting www.nbfclive.com/waterwalk, or calling 626-205-0285.

Friends of Diamond Bar Library to hold Wine Soiree April 11
Delicious food, premium wines and great fun in an elegant setting - that's what you'll find in Diamond Bar on Sunday April 11, 2010 at 4 p.m. The Friends of the Library will be hosting the 17th Annual Wine Soirée benefiting the Diamond Bar Library. Tickets are $50 per person in advance and $60 at the door. A unique souvenir wine glass is included with each ticket. Tickets are available by calling 909 861-2002. The annual Wine Soirée has become an institution in Diamond Bar and is a great way to meet new and old friends and neighbors.
Interesting selections of wine from all over the world will be offered for tasting at the Wine Soirée from the Jerry Mead New World International Wine Competition. Delicious food will be presented for tasting by many local restaurants offering varied and interesting cuisines from around the world. Some of the outstanding restaurants include Aljibani Halal Market, Diamond Palace, Champs Elysees Bakery, Chilli’s Grill and Bar, Chipotle, Da Kine Hawaiian Grindz, Dale Brothers Brewery, Diamond Palace, East 180, Graber Olive House, International Deli, It’s A Grind, Koba Korean BBQ, Mandarin Taste Restaurant, Round Table Pizza, and The Whole Enchilada.
For the last 17 years, the proceeds from this very popular event have been used to advance continuing programs in the library - replacing worn books, adding to the best-seller collection, purchasing foreign language books, videos and books on tape to support the diverse population in Diamond Bar. In addition, we support the very active children's programs, reading programs and speaker series. Ten years ago the Friends established a used bookstore, Basically BOOKS that provides gently used books at very low prices - most books less than three dollars.
The Children's Area of the library was renovated and a special Youth Section was supported with funds provided by the Friends. A Family Place, a special program for families with young children, is in its third year. This is a special program for young parents and their preschool children from birth to three years in age. It is a place where parents can learn and play with their little ones in a safe and positive environment.
The Friends of the Library has also partnered with the Los Angeles County Library system to renovate our existing library to make it more “user-friendly” for our patrons such as the self-checkout stations that have speeded up the checkout process. In 2010 a major renovation of the Community Room will be completed making this space more welcoming to our patrons and the community.
The funds raised at The Wine Soirée go to increase literacy and make learning easier in Diamond Bar. Those attending this great event can feel good that all the fun they are having - the food and wines they taste, the auction items they win, the music they enjoy - all the proceeds from this will go to improve our quality of life and learning. The Wine Soirée will start at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 11, 2010 at the beautiful Diamond Bar Center, 1600 Grand Avenue in Diamond Bar.

Evelyn Evelyn release new album and to tour
Evelyn Evelyn was “discovered” by Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls, and renowned minstrel Jason Webley. The world’s only conjoined twin singer-songwriter duo are thrilled to announce the release of their debut self-titled record today! As a special treat, they’re sharing a new MP3 from the record, “My Space,” which premiered on Stereogum earlier today. The track, a commentary on modern social networking in the vein of an 80s power ballad, includes gang vocal contributions by a number of notable guests.
The twins showcase their varying musical influences as the songs on the record flow seamlessly through many musical genres, styles and eras. From the vaudevillian tracks “Have You Seen My Sister Evelyn?” and the quirky “Elephant Elephant” to the menacing country-tinged love ballad “You Only Want Me ‘Cause You Want My Sister” and the ukulele rendition of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart” the record could be at home in a lost Tim Burton movie or a warped sequel to the Rock Horror Picture Show.
The twins are about to embark on their first tour, hitting the road in Canada and the US later this Spring. Don’t miss your chance to be one of the first to experience Evelyn Evelyn LIVE!

Humane Society issues Easter pet gift reminder
The Humane Society of the United States is asking people to refrain from acquiring live chicks and rabbits as Easter gifts this holiday season. Young, adorable animals mature quickly into adults and need daily care for the rest of their lives. Instead of live animals as gifts, consider giving children a plush toy or a chocolate rabbit.
“People often don’t realize the level of commitment that these animals require,” said Adam Goldfarb, director of the Pets at Risk program for The HSUS. “The animals that people associate with Easter, like chicks and baby rabbits, have very specific social and nutritional needs. They can’t be caged continuously or relegated to the basement or garage.”
In some areas, selling chicks and keeping chickens as pets is actually illegal. Every year, animal shelters receive a surge of unwanted Easter pets who are given up after the owners have lost interest or are unable to care for them. Unfortunately, many are euthanized due to lack of available homes.
Some animals given as gifts are released into the wild when people tire of them. However, these animals are domestic species. They’re unable to fend for themselves and usually die of starvation or exposure to the elements, or are preyed upon by other animals.
Bringing any type of pet into your home should be done only after carefully assessing your family’s ability to meet the animal’s needs and after seeking information from experts. Talk to a veterinarian, your local animal shelter, or other pet owners about the nuts and bolts of caring for these animals. Adding chickens or any animals to your family should only be done if you have carefully considered your family's lifestyle and your commitment to an animal who can live for many years. It's not easy breaking the news to a child that their new pet is being given away because the adults in the home made a bad decision.
Visit humanesociety.org/rabbitcare to learn more about taking care of rabbits. If you do decide that a rabbit would be a good pet for your family, consider adopting from your local animal shelter or rabbit rescue group.

Korn signs with Roadrunner Records
Roadrunner Records announced today the worldwide signing of multi-platinum, genre-defining hard rock band Korn to the label. Korn III - Remember Who You Are is the band's ninth album overall and their first album for their new label. It was produced by Ross Robinson, who also manned the boards for the band's explosively definitive self-titled 1994 debut, as well as the follow up, 1996's Life is Peachy.
Bursting onto and instantly dominating the hard rock scene in 1994, Korn have proven to be one of the pre-eminent bands in the world, as well as one of the most influential and significant bands on the hard rock musical landscape for the past two decades.
"We called this record Korn III - Remember Who You Are because it really feels like a return to that attitude we had on the first two records," bassist Fieldy said. "And when it came to putting this record out, we could not think of anyone better to help us than Roadrunner, the only label that even understands rock music anymore."
Fieldy also checked in from the band's current tour, taking time to greet fans while the band was trekking around the snowy Alaskan terrain.
Over the course of eight releases, Korn have sold over 30 million albums worldwide, inspiring a disciple-like devotion among their fanbase along the way. Korn also notched six Grammy nominations and have won two; one for Best Short Form Music Video for "Freak on a Leash" from 1998's Follow the Leader, as well as one for Best Metal Performance for "Here to Stay" from 2002's Untouchables. They have also been nominated for nine MTV VMAs, having picked up two wins for "Best Rock Video" and "Best Editing" for "Freak on a Leash." Korn also launched their own massively successful touring festival, "The Family Values Tour."
It's beyond evident that Korn are one of a kind and have secured a firm place in the history of rock 'n' roll, thanks to their signature blend of twisted, throbbing guitar riffs, syncopated chaotic funk beats, a schizophrenic bass thump and an unmistakable cathartic howl.
Korn's current lineup is Jonathan Davis (vocals), Fieldy (bass), James "Munky" Shaffer (guitar) and Ray Luzier (drums).
Korn III - Remember Who You Are retains that savage, raw energy that made Korn such a crucial fixture to an entire generation of diehard fans.
The band will spend the summer headlining the third annual Rock Star Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. They will also embark on a South American run, as well as headline the Jagermeister Music Tour in America beforehand.

16 Second Stare on tour in support of upcoming album
Gaining ground in an industry that is tough as nails – The band that is sweeping the USA with their industrial metal is the Hot Ticket to see this year and out with Billboard charting band COLD. 16 SECOND STARE breaks new sonic ground with their new self-titled album releasing April 27 on Goomba Music.
With an aggressive sound, in the veins of Rob Zombie, NIN and Marilyn Manson - Their new self-titled record, 16 SECOND STARE is ready to take their place in the vanguard of the international metal scene. Fueled by the ferocious vocals of Chris Davis, who stepped out from behind his drum kit to prowl the stage like a madman, and driven by the onslaught of guitarist Angry Tim Shanks, the band has been winning legions of fans with its uncompromising stage show. During the summer of 2009, on the road with Crüe Fest 2, 16 SECOND STARE showed what they were made of winning over huge crowds with their radical onslaught. Now they're unleashing an equally radical album.
16 SECOND STARE took a year to make and, during that time, the band underwent a transformation. "I started singing lead and everything clicked into place,' says singer and drummer Chris Davis. “We used to think about radio play, but this time decided to go for the jugular. We're going to get right up in your face and if people like it, that's fine. If not, fuck'em. Anyone who's seen us live knows we kick ass, so we decided to kick ass in the studio too. Making Chris the singer was the best move we ever made.”
Come out and hear the Hot Ticket of the year, 16 SECOND STARE on tour now with COLD and NONPOINT.

Blue Note Karaoke launches contest
To get vocal chords warmed up for the second annual Blue Note Karaoke event May 6th at The OC Tavern in San Clemente, the Surfrider Foundation and Emergen-C® kick off a two-week MySpace karaoke contest from today until April 12th where one lucky winner will receive an all-expense paid trip to Southern California to join surfers, activists and karaoke aficionados in “rocking out for a cause.”
Water quality is one of the nation’s most compelling environmental issues. Consider this: every eight months, 11 million gallons of oil (the equivalent of one Exxon Valdez spill) runs into the oceans from our streets and highways. Blue Note Karaoke, founded by the Surfrider Foundation and Emergen-C aims to raise awareness about this and other water quality issues, and what individuals can do in their daily lives to make a difference.
“Clean and healthy coastal water quality is about the individual,” says Matt McClain, Surfrider Foundation’s Director of Marketing and Communications. “The choices we make from picking up after our pets to taking shorter showers, make a huge impact on coastal water quality, and the BLUE Note Karaoke event is a great way for us to highlight, educate and inspire everyone to make these positive changes in their daily lives to keep our oceans, waves and beaches safe and healthy.”
To give karaoke aficionados a chance to tap into their inner rock star, heavy metal karaoke band KNAC/DC will take to the stage to perform the most popular metal hits from greats like Motley Crue, Metallica, Slayer and Van Halen along with audience members.
BLUE Note Karaoke also marks the second anniversary of the Surfrider Foundation’s partnership with Emergen-C BLUE™. For every box of the berry blue flavored vitamin drink mix sold, 20¢ is donated to Surfrider Foundation. Since its launch, over $50,000 has been donated. “We hope more and more people will take small actions to help turn the tide against threats to our oceans,” says Meghann Seidner, Emergen-C’s Brand Manager. “Drinking Emergen-C BLUE is a simple way to do the right thing for your body and our bodies of water.”
Tickets for Blue Note Karaoke go on-sale April 12th, and are $10. Doors open at 8:00 pm. For additional information, visit

Meet Beneath Me
The Windy City does not have the strength to sustain the sonic hurricane of sound that is BENEATH ME. BENEATH ME is a modern rock powerhouse that has the drive, determination and ambition to become the next big thing on the hard rock scene.
BENEATH ME is the amalgamation of two Chicago outfits that both met their demise in 2007. The first of which featured twin brothers Mikey Vujasin (Rhythm/Lead Guitar and Backing Vocals), Andy Vujasin (Drums) and George Sack (Rhythm/Lead Guitar and Backing Vocals). The second band was helmed by bassist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Johnny Drugan. Members of both groups were mutual partners in crime, so after the demise of their respective bands it was only natural for them to get together to form what would become BENEATH ME.
From their inception, they started working together with a singer they immediately felt a connection with. The band spent hours upon hours writing and recording material for what was to be their debut release. With the record finished and a distribution deal secured and in place, BENEATH ME was ready to unleash their sound upon the masses. Due to personal problems the original singer was not able to tour behind the record and hence it was never released. At this point BENEATH ME decided that they would start over again with new vocal melodies and lyrics. This process spawned full reconstruction of songs and parlayed the band into a whole new realm of composition and inspiration.
In 2008 BENEATH ME started the quest for a new singer utilizing their street team, MySpace and Facebook pages as well as local word-of-mouth. Soon after, the band was receiving submissions from across the continent. If the band dug what they heard, songs would be sent to the prospective vocalist to see what the candidate was able to do with their tunes. The day they received a demo back from Montreal native Franco ‘V’ Roc, they were blown away and immediately flew him out to Chicago . It wasn’t long after that he was chosen to be the new front man for BENEATH ME.
Bassist and co-producer Johnny Drugan spoke on their latest recording process. “We utilized the pain we had endured by converting it into positive energy, this gave us our end result which was living proof that everything does happen for a reason." Guitarist and co-producer Mikey Vujasin said "we wanted to keep the record organic and raw. When listening to it from beginning to end it creates an overall story that takes listeners to another realm.”
After a year in the studio with their new singer, BENEATH ME emerged stronger then ever with a sound all their own. The recording sessions spawned their debut masterpiece, “Wish I Wouldn’t Care.” Johnny commented on the significance of the album’s title, “When we did this record it was an exercise in futility trying to not relive what we had accomplished on our previous record…the music that had our blood, sweat and lives engrained in it was wasted because one person couldn't get himself together. I found myself thinking, I wish I wouldn't care anymore... but I do".
BENEATH ME is:
Franco V. Roc: Lead Vocals
Johnny Drugan: Bass Guitar, Backing Vocals, & Keyboards
Mike Vujasin: Rhythm/Lead Guitar & Backing Vocals
George Sack: Rhythm/Lead Guitar & Backing Vocals
Andy Vujasin: Drums

AFRO FUNKE' - ROOT DOWN "SOUND UP"
w/ DJs Music Man Miles, Loslito, Sloe Poke & Ervin Arana!
Been along time, 12 years in fact! Rootdown's origins go back to a legendary party called the Breaks formed by Music Man Miles of Breakestra in 1996.The Breakestra was formed as the Breaks house band & immediatelly Miles enlisted future Rootdown co- founder Loslito (of the Rebirth) on the keys. After 1 year of legendary LAfunking, the Breaks was retired but Loslito & Miles knew that LA still needed some place to get that raw flavor every week.
Adding hip hop/beats (whereas the breaks had been intentionally only old rare groove funk sounds) and eventually more world rhythms courtesy of Rootdown resident DJ DUSK (RIP) the Rootdown was born.It became the new home for many guest djs, live funk bands & mcs.Rootdown is where Miles & Los first cut theirteeth as djs.
Folks like Z trip, Antibalas, Peanut Butter Wolf & even Afro Funke founder Jeremy Sole had some oftheir first LA appearances at Rootdown. As well it was at Rootdown that Dusk & Miles put on L.A.'s very first drum machine exhibition, the Rootdown Soundclash which was filmed by B+ & Eric Coleman and is available on dvd at mochilla.com
Sadly 9 years after Rootdown was sparked our brother DJ Dusk passed on from this world & though it wasimpossible to ever be the same, Rootdown continued on his name adding Djs Sloe Poke,Ervin Arana,Jedi,Burt Blackarach & Expo into the mix.
Recently Rootdown decided to pause as a weekly but are makingappearances around town at some of our friends & families jams & will continue to do one off events as long as there are turntables & folks ready to move to funky sounds from all around.

William S. Hart postage stamp to be unveiled April 17 in Newhall
On April 17, 2010, the United States Postal Service (USPS) will release a series of four stamps, Cowboys of the Silver Screen. Of the four commemorative stamps, William S. Hart will be memorialized along with three other celebrated Western film stars: Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and Tom Mix.
In celebration of the stamp release and Hart’s legacy, a special ceremony will be held at the William S. Hart Park and Museum on April 17 to unveil the Hart Stamp. Following the unveiling ceremony, special family activities, music and tours unfold throughout the day. For devoted philatelists, first-day-of-sale stamp purchases and cancellations of the entire Cowboys of the Silver Screen series will be available courtesy of the USPS.
Hart was one of the most popular leading men of the silent film era, unique for his powerful presence and serious approach to early Westerns. His acting skills were honed by years of experience on the New York stage and theaters all over the country, and in his movies, the actor insisted on authentic depictions of the Old West and its people, from their clothes to their lifestyles and complex personalities. He frequently played a stalwart, tough-as-nails cowboy, with a soft spot for his favorite horse — a brown and white pinto named Fritz.
The Cowboys of the Silver Screen stamp art is by freelance illustrator Robert Rodriguez, whose work has been featured on more than a dozen previous stamps. Rodriguez based his portrait of William S. Hart on a likeness of the actor that appeared on a poster for the 1925 film Tumbleweeds.
The Hart Museum, located in Newhall, California, is part of the Natural History Family of Museums. This event is a joint effort by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, Friends of Hart Park, and the United States Postal Service.

McGinty's Gallery at the End of the World, 2475 N. Lake Ave., Altadena will again sponsor the outgoing queen float for the 33rd Occasional Pasadena Doo Dah Parade on May 1. It will honor 32nd Queen Skittles in a manner befitting her personality and reign. Rose Bowl Loop improvements begin today
Work will begin Monday, March 29, on the installation of a new, dedicated pedestrian walkway around the Rose Bowl Loop in Pasadena.
The 3.3-mile recreational loop is popular with walkers, joggers, skaters, cyclists and others.
The first step in the project will be slurry sealing, which protects and extends the life of street paving. The slurry sealing will be done on several streets around the Rose Bowl Stadium and Brookside Golf Course, including Washington Boulevard, West Drive, Seco Street, Rosemont Avenue, Rose Bowl Drive and Parkview Avenue.
When the slurry sealing is completed, the pedestrian walkway will be installed. The entire width and length of the 13-foot walkway will be distinguished by tan-colored pavement. Traffic delineators will be placed along the outside of the walkway to help separate walkers from other users and allow for two-way pedestrian travel. The existing pedestrian restriction signs and messages will be removed.
The Rose Bowl Loop project is expected to be completed by mid-May. For more information, including maps and diagrams, visit www.cityofpasadena.net/publicworks/engineering or call (626) 744-4720.

Ex-Stranglers frontman Hugh Cornwell endorses free music downloads
In a recent BBC News interview, former Stranglers frontman Hugh Cornwell endorsed free music downloading, coming just as the British government plans to crack down on illegal downloaders. Hugh, currently touring the United States, argues that a new generation is exposed to his music through the Internet and they, in turn, spend more money on his live performances.
“There’s a whole generation of people who have never heard of me or the band I used to be in, The Stranglers. The question is, how do I reach them?" Huh asks in the video. “As far as I’m concerned, the free downloading of music is something we should embrace and not fear… People introduced to my music free online are more likely to buy my records and come to my live shows.”
Hugh is pioneering free downloads as his latest album, Hooverdam, is available for free download at his website, Hughcornwell.com which is available for viewing in twelve languages. He has also released the MP3 for single “Please Don’t Put Me On A Slow Boat To Trowbridge” from the new record which you can download here. Feel free to post and share!

Archeology to tour in support of ne album
The men in Archeology are heading on tour down the West coast and back in celebration of their new album, Memorial. The album is a cache of songs that reflect Daniel Walker and Jason Davis's (principal songwriters) backgrounds growing up as sons of preacher men and their anger at the hypocrisy that organized religions often pervades. Still, they throw in a few straight up pop songs to keep the mood lighter.
Live, the band is a unique style of ornate pop with some of the most lush, choir boy harmonies you'll hear this year! Now performing as a four-piece, the songs are flush with guitars, keys, drums and more.

The Wailing Wall on tour in support of new album
The Wailing Wall is New York-based multi-instrumentalist, Jesse Rifkin. The Wailing Wall's first record, Hospital Blossoms, released free on the JDub Records website, was downloaded well over 15,000 times by new fans all around the world. That project landed Jesse live spots on MTVU, WNYC Soundcheck, WFMU and Fearless Music TV. Now, Jesse's new record, The Low Hanging Fruit, is a mirror of his own struggle with a much beloved and alien world.
Still hungry and skeptical after 11 years of Orthodox day school education, and questioning his belief in a benevolent higher power, Jesse turned to the strains of Sufi Qawwali music, Hindu Kirtan chanting, Renaissance and Baroque church music.
Looking back, perhaps this wasn't a turn so much as a return: “My parents first met in a Siddha Yoga ashram in California where they both spent years following a guru named Swami Muktananda...[and] I grew up meditating and chanting with them. So throughout my childhood, there was an awareness of both Jewish and Hindu liturgical traditions,” says Jesse.
Indeed, the vibrant, multicultural dreamscape on The Low Hanging Fruit is a great departure from the rough, woodland edges of Hospital Blossoms. The Wailing Wall has expanded his instrumental palate, including the disparate choices of sitar, singing saw and pipe organ. Still, Jesse maintains his trademark attention to detail and a preoccupation with language.
“Throughout the ages, mystics have come up with some astoundingly beautiful ways to express things that are inherently beyond expression. I am in love with the poetry of the Bible, especially Psalms and Song of Songs, and have also been heavily influenced by St. John of the Cross, Rabindranath Tagore, Mirabai, and Rumi, among others.”
The Low Hanging Fruit is the product of a difficult year for Jesse, fueled by a series of personal setbacks and letdowns. However, even in times of darkness, Jesse was able to find some sense of comfort, hope and spiritual purpose in the act of self-expression. On “For C.M.R,” he laments “that light is hidden still because/the light hides like it always does/sometimes I wonder why we bother trying/but still somehow we able on/another dusk another dawn/and I feel another song my lips are forming.”
The record could not have come together without Jesse's collaboration with ANTI recording artist Tim Fite. Tim guided the recording process, which primarily took place in a barn in Columbia, NJ, with additional work in a high school auditorium in Blairstown, NJ, Tim's studio in Brooklyn and Wesleyan University's memorial chapel.
“My process in recording and performing has always been to follow spontaneous moments of inspiration...[but] Tim taught me how to make a record with care and patience, to put consideration and work into every single note until it is at the exact place where it needs to be, and to let those moments of spontaneous inspiration lead to even greater moments of total awareness and control.”
Over the past few years, The Wailing Wall has been joined live and on record by a diverse and lengthy list of co-conspirators, including members of and contributors to such bands as Camera Obscura, Titus Andronicus, Eli “Paperboy” Reed, Pepi Ginsberg, Mountain Man, DeLeon, Dinowalrus, The So So Glos, Thanksgiving, The Grates and Wolf Colonel.

Electro-art-rock iconoclasts DEVO celebrate their early recorded works from the Warner Bros. Records vaults with remastered vinyl and expanded CD editions of their second album, 1979’s DUTY NOW FOR THE FUTURE, and their fourth album, 1981’s NEW TRADITIONALISTS. DUTY NOW will be available beginning on April 17th, Record Store Day, on vinyl while NEW TRADITIONALISTS will follow on May 11th.

LA Chinldren's Chorus open house in Pasadena April 10
Los Angeles Children's Chorus (LACC) hosts a free open house to introduce families to its highly regarded choirs and acclaimed choral training program for youths on Saturday, April 10, 2010, at 11 AM, at its headquarters located on the campus of Pasadena Presbyterian Church.
“The choir is holding its annual auditions for boys and girls ages eight to twelve in the beginning of June,” states LACC Executive Director Rachel Fine, “so this is a great opportunity prior to auditions for parents and children to experience the choir firsthand and discover if LACC's multifaceted programs might be of interest to them.”
The open house features a brief live performance by LACC's superb Apprentice Choir, under the direction of Assistant Artistic Director Amy Brehm, The performance will provide a demonstration of the numerous skills children learn as well as the high quality of the chorus and comprehensive music program. Families will also enjoy group warm-ups and interactive musicianship activities conducted by LACC staff, both of which are part of the choir's first-rate training program. There will also be a short presentation and the opportunity for guests to meet some of LACC's staff to ask questions about the program.
LACC's renowned program focuses on training children who may not necessarily have had previous singing experience, but who are dedicated to achieving excellence in vocal technique, choral singing and classical music. Under the artistic direction of Anne Tomlinson and currently celebrating its 24th season, the choir provides a comprehensive music education and performance program for children of diverse cultural and economic backgrounds in Los Angeles County.
LACC is comprised of six choirs with choristers ranging in age from 8 to 18 who reside in Southern California. LACC also offers “First Experiences in Singing” classes for young singers. The choir frequently performs with such leading musical ensembles as the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. Under Mrs. Tomlinson, LACC also assists Los Angeles Opera by providing and training children for opera productions that require children's chorus or soloists.
Pasadena Presbyterian Church is located at 585 East Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena, California 91101. The open house is free, but reservations are required and can be made by calling 626.793.4231 or e-mailing info@lachildrenschorus.org.

Jin Akanishi to perform at Club Nokia Live in June
United Television Broadcasting (UTB) announces the American debut of Japanese superstar performer Jin Akanishi at Club Nokia LA Live on June 19th and 20th. Akanishi, a lead vocalist of the J-pop superband KAT-TUN, will perform a variety of songs in his native Japanese and in English. The You and Jin Tour's two-night stand in downtown Los Angeles consists of three shows featuring a Vegas-style production, with big screen live simulcasts, arena-lighting and lasers, back-up dancers and chorus in the 2,300 seat venue.
Akanishi is a lead vocalist for the renowned Japanese pop group KAT-TUN, which has tallied 14 consecutive chart-toppers and sold 5.2 million CDs. On April 4, 2009, tickets went on sale for KAT-TUN's eight consecutive shows at Japan's largest venue, the Tokyo Dome, along with follow up shows in Osaka and again in Tokyo. All 440,000 seats sold out that day.
Akanishi performed 32 shows of You and Jin from February 7th to February 28th, in Tokyo at the Nissei Theater. The event is the brainchild of Johnny Kitagawa, President of Japan's top talent agency Johnny & Associates, Inc. "I wanted to try an American style performance in Japan, with some of our greatest talent," said Kitagawa. The success of the show encouraged Kitagawa to expand the tour outside of Japan, starting in Los Angeles.
"I'm thrilled to bring this show to my fans in the U.S. I believe we will broaden our fan base and reach by performing Japanese and English songs that appeal to a wider audience. We have worked hard to produce a high-quality, high-energy, visually stimulating show and I am certain our American fans will enjoy every minute of it," offered Akanishi.
Showtimes are Saturday, June 19th at 6pm and Sunday, June 20th at 1pm and 6pm. Tickets will go on sale on April 15th through www.ticketmaster.com and www.allamerican-tkt.com.
Concert information will be available at www.jinakanishi.us

Band of Horses to release new album and tour
Band of Horses, the Low Country’s premier rock n’ roll outfit, will release their third full length LP, entitled Infinite Arms ,on May 18th through Brown Records / Fat Possum Records / Columbia Records.
The album package will feature the photography of the band's long time collaborator Christopher Wilson.
Produced by Band of Horses with additional production from Phil Ek, mixed by Dave Sardy, and recorded over a 16-month period, the songs on Infinite Arms project the essence of the different locales across America that became the setting for the recording and songwriting process behind the album. The rich musical heritage of Muscle Shoals, AL, the sublime beauty of Asheville’s Blue Ridge Mountains, the glamorous Hollywood Hills and the vast Mojave desert all influenced the sounds on Infinite Arms and helped yield the group’s most focused and dynamic recordings to date. The serene woods of Northern Minnesota and the band’s native Carolinas inspired the songwriting, lending the compositions an air of comfort and familiarity.
Band of Horses are Ben Bridwell, Creighton Barrett, Ryan Monroe, Tyler Ramsey and Bill Reynolds. Long time touring members of the group, Infinite Arms marks the recording debut of Ramsey and Reynolds, while Barrett and Monroe graced the last album, Cease to Begin.
Through touring together in support of Cease to Begin and during breaks in the Infinite Arms recording process, the band have become a cohesive force with all members making invaluable contributions to the unmistakable sound that founder Bridwell has crafted since the band’s inception. As Bridwell himself concedes, “in many ways, this is the first Band of Horses record.”
Look for the band to support Infinite Arms with tour dates across the globe in 2010. A current list of dates is below, with many more to be announced very soon.

Foundation signs with Bridge Nine
Things are busy here at Bridge Nine and we are more than excited to announce another addition to our roster - Atlanta's Straight Edge Hardcore stalwarts Foundation. No strangers to to the road, Foundation has been seen on tour all over the country; most notably with Bane and on Have Heart's final string of shows last Fall.
B9 Owner Chris Wrenn said, "We couldn't be happier to sign Foundation - these guys have been working hard over the last few years and officially caught our attention last summer when we were all blown away by their live show. It's important for us as a label to have a solid, straight edge hardcore band and Foundation is the best band in that genre right now. Champion and Have Heart did great things for Bridge Nine in the past decade and after their demise we are excited to pass the torch over to Foundation."
Foundation will be gearing up for a full US tour in May and June alongside Backtrack and Rotting Out before they head to the studio to record their Bridge Nine Records debut. With two releases under their belt (Hang Your Head 7" and S/T 7" on Six Feet Under Records) and influences such as Unbroken and Buried Alive, Foundation's first proper full-length is sure to be one of the best straight-forward hardcore records of the year.
Drummer Champ Hammett said, "We can't wait to finish and record the new LP and tour non-stop - we want to hit all the fests and cover the US, hopefully Europe and other parts of the world. Get ready to see us everywhere in 2010 and beyond."
Get ready to hear new material from the band that Deoymusic.com coined as "...pure, unadulterated hardcore with vicious breakdowns, pummeling rhythms, and gruff vocals, replete with shout-outs to straight edge and a little hometown pride..." soon and be sure to check the band out at the United Blood Fest in Richmond, VA this weekend and on tour throughout May and June.

Allan Rich teaching at Musicians Institute
Two-time Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe-nominated songwriter Allan Rich’s current involvement as an instructor and counselor at Musicians Institute in Hollywood grew out of a very simple truth he learned back in the early 80s, when he was new in town and struggling to have his songs heard: it’s all about making connections.
The Brooklyn native, whose songs have sold over 65 million copies, has penned or co-penned hits for some of the biggest pop stars of the past two decades. “Run To You,” which he wrote with his longtime partner Jud Friedman, was recorded by Whitney Houston and was part of The Bodyguard film soundtrack which sold over 30 million copies; it earned Rich his first Oscar and Grammy nomination. Rich’s hits include Natalie Cole’s “I Live For Your Love,” James Ingram’s #1 “I Don’t Have The Heart,” Kenny Loggins’ “For The First Time” from the Michelle Pfeiffer/George Clooney film “One Fine Day” (which earned the songwriter an Oscar, Grammy and Golden Globe nomination) and *NSYNC’s “I Drive Myself Crazy” (from their 10 million selling debut CD).
Other artists recording who have recorded Rich’s songs include Barbra Streisand, Tina Turner, Rod Stewart, Luther Vandross, Dolly Parton, Patti Labelle, Gladys Knight and Barry Manilow. His and Friedman’s most recent placements have been on new recordings by Toni Braxton, Keb’ Mo’, David Foster protégée Charice and up and coming vocalist Anna Margaret.
Despite this impressive track record, Rich still believes it’s important to get out there and attend events where he can hook up with new artists and A&R people. “You never know when you’ll meet that next person who can turn our latest song into a hit,” he says. He attended an A&R panel at MI, where he met Kenny Kerner, head of the school’s Music Business Program. Rich had been thinking for a while that he was at a point in his career where it would be nice to “give back,” and he told Kerner about his interest in possibly teaching at MI.
“I told him I thought I could bring something important to this party,” Rich says, “and Kenny was open to this idea and told me he had created several songwriting classes and that I should submit a proposal and a bio for consideration. No matter how many years I’ve been in the industry, it’s inspiring to be around up and coming writers and I feel I had a lot of songwriting expertise and real life practical experience to offer them.”
In addition to launching his work as a one on one songwriting counselor for MI students,
Rich made his debut as an MI instructor with three ten week classes during the recently completed Winter Quarter 2010: Fundamentals of Lyric Writing, Lyric Writing for Original Songs (both songwriter courses) and The Songwriters, a weekly “Actor’s Studio” type setup where Rich brings in one big name pop composer each week for an interactive Q&A session on songwriting and the music business. Many of the 23 students in The Songwriters class had come to pursue their musical education at MI from other countries, including India, Guatemala, Panama, Korea and Sweden.
In the lyric writing class, Rich had each student comb through newspapers and magazines for five phrases that might make a good song title; once the students chose one to run with, they worked with the instructor week by week on developing lyrics for a song based on the title. Rich also gave feedback to those students who brought in melodies to work with. The class midterm assignment was writing fresh lyrics to the melody of The Beatles classic “Let It Be.”
The ten hit composers that Rich brought to The Songwriters class include Lindy Robbins (Backstreet Boys’ “Incomplete,” Nick Lachey’s “What’s Left of Me”); Steve Dorff (Kenny Rogers, Anne Murray, Whitney Houston); Robin Lerner (Tim McGraw, Randy Travis, Faith Hill’s “This Kiss”); Shelly Peiken (Christina Aguilera’s “What A Girl Wants,” Meredith Brooks’ “Bitch”); Franne Golde (Selena’s “Dreamin’”, The Commodores, The Pussycat Dolls’ “StickWithYu”); Ry Cumming, a new recording artist discovered by Teresa LaBarbera Whites, who developed Beyonce and Destiny’s Child, Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears; Lauren Christy of the Grammy nominated writing/production team The Matrix (Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated” and “I’m With You” and Jason Mraz’s “The Remedy”; Annie Roboff (Faith Hill’s “This Kiss,” Whitney Houston, Bonnie Raitt, Dixie Chicks); Evan Bogart (Rihanna’s “SOS,” Beyonce’s “Halo”), DQ (Beyonce) and Erika Nuri (Fantasia, Brandy) of The Writing Camp; and Rich’s songwriting partner Jud Friedman.
“When I first moved from New York to L.A. to become a songwriter,” Rich says, “I was blown away by how many top name panels there were and how easy it was for an up and comer to make connections and pitch their songs. ASCAP and BMI had them, and there was the Songwriters Resource Service (SRS) and Los Angeles Songwriter’s Showcase. There aren’t as many opportunities for young writers to meet top songwriters and A&R people and showcase their songs. As part of my commitment to give back, I thought MI would be the perfect place to recreate that kind of environment. It was very exciting. My students from other countries had a strong desire to come here and dedicate their time to becoming quality songwriters, and they deserve these opportunities.”
Rich will be teaching his lyric writing class during the spring quarter and will reprise his Songwriters course in the fall with another slate of high level surprise guests. He adds, “I tell my class that they have to learn the rules before they can break them, and I teach the old school perspective on lyric writing combined with today’s more common approach of writing lyrics and melodies to existing tracks. I’ve become a cheerleader for them and am amazed at the level of talent these students have. I’m excited about having the chance to help them along in their careers and realize their dreams.”
