Ford to host Latin concert series

Southern Californian's Latino diversity is reflected in the extensive line up during the Ford Amphitheatre's 2010 Summer Season. Dance, music and art performances draw upon Mexican, South American, Central America and Spanish cultures and backgrounds.

Events include:
§ Huayucaltia Contemporary Music Of Latin America From The Heart Of Los Angeles – 7 pm, Sat. May 29 – Huayucaltia weaves their Peruvian, Mexican, Colombian, Argentinean and North American roots into their music. Sabiá and Conjunto Jardin, sister bands, also perform.

§ Gregorio Luke At The Ford - Frida, A New Look – 8 pm, Fri. June 11 & Sat. June 12 – Using recently discovered color photographs, rare film clips and letters The former director of the Museum of Latin American Art and cultural attaché of the Consulate of Mexico in Los Angeles will cover all aspects of the life and career of Frida.

§ Maria Bermudez’ ‘Sonidos Gitanos’ With The Chicana Gypsy Project – 8:30 pm, Fri. July 23 & Sat. July 24 – East LA-born flamenco dancer Maria Bermudez unites the Cante Jondo or “deep song” of flamenco, blues and ranchera.

§ Fire & Soul: La Women Unite For Tía Chucha's Centro Cultural – 7 pm, Sun. August 1 – A powerhouse lineup of female performers include Grammy-nominated vocalist-composer Perla Batalla, National Book Award poet Wanda Coleman performance artist Kristina Wong.

§ Viver Brasil Dance Company – 7 pm, Sat. July 31 – Olodum, the 23-member percussion and dance ensemble from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, brings their combo of Brazilian samba, Jamaican reggae, merengue and salsa.

§ Concierto El Rey – Homenaje A Jose Alfredo Jiménez – 7 pm, Sat. Aug. 14 – A roster of musicians, singers and dancers to pay tribute to the foremost composer of ranchera music. Jimenez had no formal musical training but wrote more than 1000 songs, a profound contribution to Mexico’s musical heritage.

§ Fiesta Argentina 2010 Tango, Cancion De Buenos Aires – 8 pm, Sat. Aug. 21 – Clarinetist Zinovy Goro and flutist Pablo Goldstein help re-create the early, pre-bandoneon sound of tango, joined by mezzo Esther Segovia, tenor Osvaldo Roval, baritone Carlos Bossio and the Otero Dance Company.

§ Grandeza Mexicana Folk Ballet – 7:30 pm, Sat. Aug. 28 – Grandeza members have immersed themselves in the time of he Mexican Revolution, studying revolutionary dances with a former member of the renowned Ballet Folklorico de Mexico. With Mariachi Nuevo Cuicatlan Grandeza will summon the spirit of this turbulent, fertile and defining period in Mexico's history.

§ Third Annual Noche Veracruzana – 7:30 pm, Sat. Sept. 4 – A music and dance performance featuring the Son Jarocho, Huasteco and Danzon traditions of Veracruz, Mexico with Ballet Folklorico Ollin, Los Hermanos Herrera, Conjunto Ollin and others.

§ Fiesta Mexicana Viii – Sones, Bailes Y Cantares – 7 pm, Sat. Sept. 25 - Now in its eighth year, the fiesta celebrates the rich diversity of folkloric music and dance of Mexico. Mariachi Cielo Nuevo, Middleton Street School Folklorico, Tamborazo Pancho Villa and Trio Jacaranda are among the performers.

§ 17TH Annual Brazilian Summer Festival 2010 – 8:30 pm, Sun. Sept, 26 – Uptempo passionate dance, performed in costumes crafted by devotees of Afro-Brazilian sacred practice, blends seamlessly with Portuguese and African vocals and the rhythms of drums and percussion

In addition, two free-for-kids (adults $5), Saturday morning events at 10 a.m. also have a Latin flair – Viver Brasil, July 31, and Latin American harpist Alfredo Rolando Ortiz, Aug. 7.
